333.0. "Reported drowning at the Ledges, 17 August" by MARX::CARTER () Tue Aug 20 1991 19:56

    I was talking to a man (Bob) at the Ledges on Sunday. He told me that a man
    had drowned there on Saturday, the 17th. He was apparently swimming
    toward the island off to the left of the ledges, and just went down
    and nobody noticed until it was too late.

    Saturday night he was in a bar or restaurant in the area. A couple of
    locals were talking about the incident, mentioned the guy was not wearing
    a suit when he was brought to the hospital. Then the locals went on to
    say something to the effect that it had been inevitable that something
    like this would hapeen at that place "where those gays hang around." At
    this point, Bob interjected himself into the conversation. He asked if
    they had ever been to the Ledges. They said, "No." He told them that was
    fairly evident, since their perception was not correct, that there are more
    families there than they might expect.

    It's interesting what people can imagine when they put their narrow
    minds to it.

333.1"Death to Gay Naturists!"STEPS1::WILSONWed Aug 21 1991 15:0312
    djc, I was at the Ledges Sunday afternoon (both before and after the
    rain :-( and didn't hear anything about this. I thought that you could
    walk to the island. It's unfortunate, but in my opinion (and probably
    statistics will back me up), neither gays nor naturists are any more
    prone to drowning than the general populace. But I guess anyone who
    would make that kind of statement (that something like this being bound
    to happen where "those gays hang around") would never let facts get in
    the way of their opinions!

    Has anybody heard any more on this?

333.2That's too bad . . .HPSRAD::JWILLIAMSJohn Williams Cirrus 297-6141Thu Aug 29 1991 15:406
I see people swim acroos that lake all the time. It's not that far. I think
maybe something happened, like a heart attack. It's difficult for me to imagine
someone swimming out and drowning in that lake without some sort of intervening
circumstance. Remember, Vt. has it's share of rednecks.

333.3An unfortunate ACCIDENT.STEPS1::WILSONThu Sep 05 1991 14:099
    RE: .2 (John), rednecks, etc. ??? Do you think foul play might have
    been involved?? It wasn't. I was there over this past weekend, and
    spoke to someone who was there when it happened. It was unfortunate,
    but the person had (a stroke? a heart attach?) which caused the
    drowning. He was in his early 40s. Bummer. :-(

    But there was no foul play.
