248.0. "Mountain Air Ranch" by CUJO::GUEST () Tue May 29 1990 21:28

I've read many entries referring Colorado people who are naturist/nudist.
There seems to be many, many people in Colorado Springs who are fans of
ValleyView. However, I've not seen mentioned of Mountain Air Ranch
(M.A.R.); therefore, I would like to introduce you to M.A.R.

M.A.R. is a family nudist resort located within minutes of
Denver. M.A.R. has over 150 lush acres of wooded mountains
providing privacy and beautiful hiking trails. The facilities
include a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, volleyball courts,
paddle tennis, short-order restaurant serving breakfast and lunch from
Memorial Day to Labor Day, community kitchen with several stoves and
refrigerators for all to use, kid's playground and a shallow kids swimming
pool, shuffleboard, bocce-ball court, small store for necessaries,
camping areas, RV parking areas with electrical and water hookups, fully
furnished cabins to rent, and, most importantly, the friendliest
people you'll ever meet!!!

M.A.R. is over fifty years old, the 2nd oldest in the U.S. I've
been a member for 13 years and even met my husband there -- he's
been a member 14 years.

You'll enjoy M.A.R. If you're interested, give them a call at
303-697-4083. If you have more questions, please respond and I'll be glad
to answer.

You forgot to mention the nice house that overlooks MAR from the
top of the mountain. I was told that there were a bunch of
    voyeurs up there! :-)
248.2MARCUJO::GUESTTue May 29 1990 23:004
There are several homes, outside of MAR property limits, that overlooks
the grounds. The homes have been owned by many people from Broncos to
astronauts. We forget they are there and aren't worried about them. I'm
sure they get bored with us soon too!!
248.3FORGET SNEAKER-PEEKERS!PNEUMA::SHERMANWed May 30 1990 12:0044
I agree with 2. I recall when I was a WASP and always wrapped myself
in a towel whilst in the bathroom prior to entering the shower. To see
    someone else! GOSH!

I got smart when, on my first encounter (Cold turkey and without
warning) I paid $20 to get into a beach which turned out to include a
(Heaven forbid) a NUDE (NOOD?) section! My WASP up-bringing said GO
... then that same WASP up-bringing said "But you paid $20!). I
    compromised and stayed!

Dressed in street clothes I couldn't go swimming; and my trunks were in
    my beach bag!

Suddenly I decided that since I would be adding very little to what was
going on and besides, at 63, I should be able to handle it. I DID it!
    And nothing happened right away.

    Needless to say, it stuck.

Having VOYEURS (sp?) peek no longer disturbs me. In fact, I sometimes
pop over to speak to them! (They are frantic ... try it!) I invite
them up on the beach to talk. They don't know where to look! Then to
top it off, I shame them into coming up to observe our Cancer Screening
Center! Then they are hit with a cross-fire: Shouldd they particpate
or never know if they are in danger or not. Most of the time they
mutter "Thank you but we must leave now." And they do!

The heck with them. They have the head problem not us!

The beauty of this world is not in the "seen-ery" but in the freedom of
experiencing the absolute equality of ALL the persons you enounter
whether they are persons in a LADY's outfit or a person in a
GENTLEMAN's outfit. Ladies and Gentlemen are nice. Let the devil take
    the others!

Forget the peekers they're in DEEP SNEAKERS. Call 'em SNEAKER-PEEKERS!

Hey don't forget the Eastern Gathering June 14th thru the 17th!

The biggest problem with MAR for myself and my wife and others that
we've spoke to is the cost. If i remember correctly it is several
hundreds of Dollars per year. Given that the season is limited around
here and that it is a fair drive from Colorado Springs that seems high.

While we were living on the East Coast we enjoyed going to Cedar Waters
in New Hampshire. They allow a couple to come in to the facility on a
daily pay fee (unlimited number of times). Yes if you attended alot of
times it could be more expensive than the yearly fee. But for the
limited number of times the weather and our work schedules coincided
the daily admittance fee was much more affordable.

The information I got from MAR a couple of years ago at least implied
that you were to a few daily entrances and then had to purchase the
year membership. Is that still true? If not then MAR would most
certainly be more attractive for us, and I suspect others here in the
    Springs.

MAR's annual membership is around $300 per year. The club is open year
round and I think you'd be surprised at how many days during 'off
season' that it's warm enough to enjoy the sun. During this past
winter, we were there during every month.

MAR also has many, many indoor activities during the winter months.
There are dances every month to live bands, MAR nights (gambling
for the benefit of the club), wine/cheese/beer/sausage parties,
    Christmas parties, etc.

I do understand that $300 is a lot of money if you are able to come to
the club only a few times; however, there is an associate membership
for those who do not live in the Denver area. The associate membership
is for those who live not within the five major counties of Denver. I
think it's around $100 per year, and then you'd pay ground fees when
you visit. Please check with the club for exact details.

be a problem, eh? :-)

:-)

As far as I remember, MAR had a hottub by the pool so there's one nice
thing to do outside during the cold season.

I don't remember there being all that many trees on the MAR grounds so there's
not that much to block the wind.

248.9MAR is GREAT!KAOFS::D_BIGELOWWed May 30 1990 17:4223
I had the opportunity to visit MAR last year when I was on training
in Denver. If I remember correctly, it was about an hour's drive
from Denver.

I agree with previous entries. I think the place is fantastic !
Of course I also agree that it's the people who make the difference.
When I was there, even though I was by myself (and of male sex),
everyone made me feel like I was a part of the group.

Usually, I find myself being the person who tries to strike up a conversation
with others I don't know, but at MAR there were tons of people who stopped
by to introduce themselves, and invited me to participate in whatever they
were doing.

The managers tried to encourage me to stay for the week-end, in one of
thier log cabins but I had made plans to visit VV the same week-end with
Judy, (which I had a great time at too!). The managers at MAR and I
worked it out that it would cost about $300 cheaper if I had stayed with
them for the week instead of staying at the hotel. If I'm every in
Denver on training again, that's where I'm booking my reservations. :-)

There is a wonderful redwood hottub about ten feet from the pool that
    is open yearround.

It's true there aren't many trees directly around the
pool/clubhouse/hottub area. However, the 150 acres are covered with
trees. There isn't much wind at MAR since we're in a valley, but the
trees do provide much needed shade.

I looked into MAR about 12 years ago when I first moved to Colorado and
at that time single men were not welcome. So I wrote them off and went
to Coot lake in Boulder and later on Vally View. From what I heard
from ex MAR members I wasn't missing much.

MAR does try to balance the membership between single men, single women
and families so that the membership does not become one-sided towards
    any particular group.

Too bad you wrote them off. MAR is a wonderful club with many wonderful
    people.

Wow, I've never heard so much controversay, over one place in this
file. Everthing from price to high, no shade, won't allow singles,
    	give the lady a break.

I would like to read the brochure to see what they have to offer.
Maybe stop for a day to see if the price is right, also what
        accommidations they have to offer.

With the gas, lodging, time and initial fee's one pays at VV what
    	would be the difference?

Guest, have you been to VV ? Can you show what the difference
would be in savings? Really, what would make me want to go there?

    Time...

I remember it taking about 90 minutes from the Springs...but then that
was 5 (almost 6) years ago...I was really surprised that it took
3 hours to get to Valley View. That translates to lotsa gas and
wear-and-tear on the car, and time that I could be lying out in the
    sun.

Of course, having been to VV a few months ago, I'd rather go to
VV. There aren't any "hostile" neighbors who don't like the
naturists so close by, and VV feels more relaxing and peaceful.
    It's really WAAAAAY out there...

But then, what the hell do I know?
248.15MARCUJO::GUESTThu May 31 1990 14:4431
Yes, I have been to VV and both are beautiful; however, very, very
different. VV offers a very quiet, remote atmosphere with hot springs
all over the grounds. There were few people when I was there; however,
I've only been during the weekdays. I would like to visit VV again,
perhaps stay for a longer period of time. I've only been there for a
    day (few hours actually).

MAR is a social club, very similar to a country club, only less
expensive. We have a beautiful clubhouse for social events (dances,
parties, etc.), hottub, pool, suana, large decks for sunning. In the
valley, there are volleyball courts, bocce ball court, paddle tennis,
community kitchen, camping areas, RV hookups, showers. There are some
campsites you can rent for all summer (May 1 - Sept 30) to keep your
RV/tent/whatever on the facilities, with electric and water. There are
approximately 300 members (men, women, single, married, children).
    MAR's members are very friendly.

There is plenty of shade at MAR. It's true around the pool/hottub area
that there are no trees; however, the clubhouse and recreation building
both have cabanas that you can sit under. Otherwise, the remaining 150
    acres is solid woods.

I'm not sure where the idea has come from that there are hostile
    peeking-toms around MAR. I've been a member 13 years and I've never
seen or heard of any hostile neighbors. There are only two houses that
are adjacent to the club, on the mountains overlooking us. Perhaps they
have peeked; however, they think since would be bored looking after a
    while.

Please let me know if I can answer any more questions for you. As you
can probably tell, I love MAR and the members who are there.

I remember hearing about MAR having problems with the neighbors who live
on the access road to MAR. I don't think that there were any problems with
people who overlooked MAR. I don't remember if I heard this from people
at MAR or if I read about it in a naturist magazine.

I remember something about the neighbors wanting to keep the access road
unpaved as to discourage people from going up to MAR. There may have been
talk of blocking off the road somewhere.

This happened a number of years ago, so I assume that all of those problems
have gone away.

B.

If this is true, then the neighbours are getting their way. When I was
up there last year in June, the access road was *NOT* paved. In fact
it was very difficult to figure out where it was exactly. I thought
that I was pulling into someone's driveway ! The road is *very* bumpy.
It was raining the morning I went up, and the water gushing down the
hill/mountain left huge gouges in the road. For anyone going there,
who hasn't been there before, make sure you have good shocks on the car!

248.18MARCUJO::GUESTFri Jun 01 1990 15:2018
There were some neighbors at the end of the dirt road that tried to
    limit the acces to MAR. They were trying to claim it as a private road;
however, the county declared it as public under a grandfather clause.
That issue has been solved for two/three years.

During rainy season (May and part of June) the road does wash out some
since it is a dirt road. However, with the heavy equipment of MAR and
some of the neighbors along the road, we try to keep it as passable as
possible. It does get bumpy at times because of the wash outs, but the
ride to get to MAR is worth it!

The reason the road is not paved is that it would be very expensive to
pave and very expensive to maintain. The road runs through private
property (however we have access through the grandfather clause) and
it's up to the owners to pave. The county has no responsibility.

I think I mentioned this already. Anyways, the answer is YES. But, I would
suggest that you call them first ! That's what I did, and then when I
arrived, they said "Oh yeah, Darrell. We spoke on the phone...so glad you
could make it " .

No, you do not have to be with a member. If you tell them that you work
for Digital, and that you saw information about them in the conferences, I
don't think you'll have any problem getting in. When I was there, I told
them all about this conference, and they were overwhelmed and excited to
find out that so many people around the world knew about their property.

248.21MARCUJO::GUESTMon Jun 04 1990 18:2413
You don't have to with a member the first time; however, it's better
-- because of driving time -- to call the office first and set up a
time to go there. That way the managers will know you're arriving and
will make themselves available to show you around. The phone number is
    303-697-4083.

Singles are always and certainly welcome, as are families. MAR does try to
keep a balance of singles and families so that it can be a club for all.
MAR does receive more single men applications than single women, so
sometimes they will fill up the quota for single men. I've haven't
heard of the quota for single women reaching the limits. Typically,
women are more shy about coming to a nudist club, especially single
    women.
248.22More questionsGENRAL::KILGORECoyote Clan MemberWed Jun 06 1990 04:2317
I've got a couple questions for GUEST...mystery lady...do you have a first
name?

I've heard MAR is strictly a nude-only resort. Is this true? If so, how
does one keep warm year-round?

I understand MAR frowns on married men visiting without their spouse. Why
would they be any different than single men? Do they have the same policy
for women who don't bring their husbands? Not all naturists have spouses
with the same desire to be nude.

If MAR is a nude-only resort and we (since I'm married) decide to visit
and I don't feel like taking off my clothes that day [I'm strange that
way...I don't feel the need to be nude at times... ;-) ], would we both
be barred from visiting? Just wondering.

Judy
248.23CADSE::WONGIn search of a better personal name...Wed Jun 06 1990 12:5917
I've heard of quite a number of places (can't remember which ones) that have
a policy of not admitting someone if their spouse wasn't also along. Of course,
I've never known anyone to be hassled by it if they also admitted singles.
All they have to do is say that they're single.

As for nude-only,...I can't really see them having that rule because not
everyone wants to be nude all the time (even you, Judy! :-) ). I know some
places require nudity in specific places (like the pools, beach areas, and
hottubs).

When I was at MAR, I never had any problems. When I first went to Solair,
I was told that I had to go nude if I was going to visit the camp grounds for
the day. Turns out that the camp is clothing-optional in most places, but
I think that they want to make sure the single males are really there for
nudism and not voyeurism.

B.
248.24MARCUJO::GUESTThu Jun 07 1990 20:2015
MAR is a nudist resort; however, you are not required to be nude or
clothed at any time -- except for being in the swimming pool or hottub
-- there you must be nude because detergents in clothing aren't kind to
the chemicals in the water. As for when it's cold, we wear clothes.
After all, as the saying goes, we're simply nudist -- not crazy.

For married people who want to visit/join without spouses...you and
your spouse must make the three initial visits together. After you've
joined (become a member), then you can be there without your spouse.
Or...if your spouse will sign an agreement that they don't mind you
being there without them, then you can be there without then.

The reason for this rule is that MAR does not in anyway want to be the
cause of any marriage problems, and does not want to be in the middle
    of possible secrets between couples.

248.26Nudism called `natural, wholesome'GENRAL::KILGORECoyote Clan MemberTue Jul 24 1990 03:1386
140-acre ranch near Tiny Town has served individuals, families since 1937

By Ed Will - Denver Post staff writer Reprinted w/o permission from the
July 15, 1990, issue of the Denver Post

Turkey Creek Canyon -- The nude woman sat at a picnic table and recalled
her two disappointments when she first discarded her clothes at Mountain
Air Ranch in the foothills southwest of Denver.

"No lighting struck," Allison said, "and no finger came down out of the sky
and said `See, I told you.' And the second was, nobody looked. It was so
disappointing. It was like, `I have been carrying this under lock and key
for 29 years, and you're not even looking at it, for God's sake.'"

She told about the event, which happened 21 years ago, to underscore her
point that a trip to a nudist camp isn't an erotic outing, but a step into
nature without the physical and psychological confinement of clothing.

"It's very natural and wholesome," said Tom, 44. "Americans have made too
much of a connection between sex and nudity. They have intertwined the two
too much."

Clothes are what place sexual emphasis on body parts, they said. Nudism is
about freedom.

"This sounds so airy-fairy, I am almost ashamed to say it," Allison said.
"But it's the truth. I am just part of the Earth here, and I feel the wind
everywhere on me."

Removing clothes also peels away class status, they said. It's impossible
to tell if the naked man [or woman ;-) jk] playing horseshoes is a cab
driver, police officer or corporate president.

Tom heard about Mountain Air as a child because his banker father handled
the ranch's account. He didn't become a nudist, however, until a sweltering
day four years ago.

"It was just before the Fourth of July. It was hot. I said, `The hell with
this.' I got up, took my shirt and shorts and threw them in the drawer. My
wife thought I had lost it."

But before he could take his clothes off at Mountain Air, he had to persuade
her to go with him. The ranch requires married men to be accompanied by their
wives. "By the time our first day was over and I said it was time to go, she
didn't want to leave."

Their son, Gordon, then 9, was a little slower to embrace nudism. "The first
week or so we were up here, he wore his towel as a skirt. That lasted until
the first time he wanted to get in the pool. Then the towel came off, and
he hasn't worried about it since."

Allison raised her 20-year-old son as a nudist at the 140-acre ranch between
two tree-covered ridges near Tiny Town [Colorado]. The camp was opened by
John and Alice Garrison in 1937.

The ranch has some 250 members. A committee votes on new members after they
have filled out applications, provided three references and spent at least
three unclothed days at the ranch.

Single men are limited to ensure a family atmosphere. Members range in age
from a month to 80-plus years.

Visitors are welcome but must have an appointment. Twenty-five toured the
camp yesterday as part of National Nudism Weekend.

Sue and Jim, a middle-aged couple from Des Moines, Iowa, spent last week at
the camp.

"Yesterday, we went walking on the trails," Sue said. "Once you have ever
walked in the woods with no clothes on, you won't want to do it again."

The luxurious ranch has campsites, trailer spaces, a dorm, a restaurant with
topless and bottomless waiters, a swimming pool, children's pool and playground,
hiking trails, volleyball court and a clubhouse for dances and Bronco parties.
[For those not from the Colorado area, the Broncos are the Denver football
team.]

The nude dances and consumption of alcoholic beverages in some areas of the
camp, which holds the second charter issued by the American Sunbathing
Association, is a sign that nudism is becoming less conservative, Allison
said. Leaders use to fear such things would cast a bad light on the lifestyle
and limit its ability to attract newcomers.

But Allison said that once exposed to nudism, it's hard to resist. "I can't
remember one time when a person who spent a day here left without taking off
their clothes."

Thanks to the people who put information about MAR in the last two
entries. That's a lot of typing!!!

Just to let you know what's going on Labor Day at MAR...
There will be a dance with a live band on Saturday night. Also the
annual volleyball tournament, bocce ball tournament and paddle tennis
tournaments will be conducted beginning on Saturday and probably
running through Monday, depending on how long the games are and how
many are played. Also, the annual guac-off (bring your favorite
guacamole dip with chips, and we vote on the best one).
