PROTECT MALE GENITALS FROM ULTRAVIOLET RAYS

Attention men, a tan line may be sexier than the alternative.

The risk of a rare cancer of the penis and scrotum goes up
sharply - like, 286 times - among sufferers of psoriasis treat-
ed with PUVA, which involves high doses of ultraviolet light,
after taking a light-sensitizing drug called a psoralen.

What does this have to do with those who don't have psoriasis
and don't take PUVA treatments? Even when the psoralen's effects
are ruled out, exposure to ultraviolet B-rays raises the risk of
genital cancer fourfold, Dr. Robert S. Stern of the Beth Israel
Hospital and colleagues at 15 other centers report in this week's
    New England Journal of Medicine.

For men who need PUVA treatment, they advise covering the genitals
or reducing the dose of UV light. For everyone else, the word is:
    cover up.
