I don't think I count as a Surfer, and I have not visited Indonesia,
so I can't help you this time.

I finally made it back from Indonesia and thought I should post the
results of my nude beach hunt here.

I only went to two islands, Lombok and Flores, due to time constraints.
While there were lots of beaches (empty ones!!!), not one was CO. Given
the fact that I went during Ramadan, I wasn't feeling very brave about
giving nudity a "try" on any beach in Lombok (which is Moslem). However,
I did get away with wearing only a string (as did many of the other European
wo/men) and the locals didn't *appear* to be bothered (as long as we stayed
on the beach). I think the general attitude was "crazy tourists", but said
with a smile and a shake of the head.

Flores, a Catholic island, was another story entirely. Lovely beaches, but
going topless was too much for the locals to handle, so I stayed covered up.

I should add that, beaches aside, both islands have much to offer the hardy
traveler, not the least of which is the friendliness and generosity of the
people.

221.3Guide book?BLKWDO::GAFFNEYFri Jun 08 1990 04:227
Lillian, I plan on visiting Lombok and other Indonesia islands in a
couple of years, could you tell me what guide book you used and how
accurate it was? ( I guess that it was either a Lonely Planet or a
    Moon book ). Thanks.
