207.0. "Clothing Optional Communities" by CADSE::WONG (Le Chinois Fou) Sat Dec 02 1989 01:59

I wonder if the Naturist Society or the ASA (or someone else) is
selling mailing lists to commercial endeavors...

I got something in the mail about some development that is going
on in Branford, Connecticut. This condominium community is going
to be clothing-optional (alledgedly), though the brochure only mentions
the words "clothing optional" twice. There are only the proposed plans
on what the units are going to look like.

This is the second such mailing that I got. The first dealt with a
place in Florida (wonder if it's in swampland :-) ). Has anyone else
    gotten something like that?

Hi Ben my own experience is that if you subscribe to magazines like
CWS or as its called today Nudeand Natural that they some times
sell their mailing lists to other naturists groups. I have gotten
information from paradise lakes and other venture in florida. Also
these facilities will buy mailing lists from companies who make
them up from the phone book so it is possible that your name was
obtained that way. We do have a very open society.

I figured it out because I use a different variation of my name
when dealing with naturist mail. It gets to me, but I know from the
envelope what the subject matterial is. I would assume that
the ASA is very big on privacy so I think that they're not selling
the mailing lists. On the other hand, I wouldn't think that the
Naturist Society were big on promoting family-style communities and
homes; their charter's a bit different.

I don't have anything to add on mailing lists but...

I seem to remember a few years back, reading about an apartment
building in California that was totally clothes-optional. Apparently,
only 2/3rds of the units had been rented. 60% of those units had
been rented by single males, while 30% had been rented by single
females, with the remaining 10% occupied by couples.

There was some contreversy (sp?) over whether or not the building would
remain clothes-optional, since the landlord was having a hard time
trying to rent the remaining units.

207.4I have Serious Doubts!CGHUB::WILSONYou CAN Tuna friend's nose!Mon Dec 04 1989 16:2421
Regarding the community in Branford, CT - I lived in East Haven,
CT, the bordering town to the east. Judging from the mores, values,
etc. of the area, I doubt that they would go through with a c/o
community. Most of the people in the area are religious (Roman
Catholic), with older European values. The predominant ethnic group
in the greater New Haven area is Italian. Although there is one
c/o beach nearby (in West Haven), it doesn't draw many people, and
most attendees are male. (In the two times I have been there, there
were a total of about 5 people, ALL male.)

Branford has a number of very small islands just offshore, and
relatively easily accessible. (The Thimble Islands.) That is about
the only place I can see that it might work.

As to mailing lists, I have been a NENA member for over a year,
and was an ASA member for years, and have never received any such
    mailings.

    Enjoy!

207.5I got one, too!HPSTEK::SHERMANMon Dec 04 1989 16:2412
    Yes, Ben:

We are old Branford folks. That is my folks were Branford folks. That
outfit had a booth opposite my Cancer Screening Center at Readings, PA
last August. Could have been sent out to the same list that sent us
all the notices for the Tri-State get togethers.

You and I should drive down the Branford to see what's going on!

.... or what's coming off or whatever!

    Jay,

Small World! The West Haven c/o beach is at the tip of the point
that starts at the end of West Ave. and extends into New Haven Harbor.
There is almost no pedestrian traffic there, and boat traffic within
sight of the point is minimal. It's one of those "Cover up if anyone
    walks by" c/o beaches.

Glad to see your wife saw the light!

207.9I got my copy in the mail too!USWAV1::REIDSat Dec 16 1989 19:586
Ben just to let you know we just received a copy of the information
on Branford Conn. in the mail. I think my origional suspicion is
correct about buying mailing lists. Personally I cant see why anyone
would want to design a cloths optional facility in the north. Weather
leaves a lot to be desired for lenghts of season to enyoy it.
