158.0. "Newsweek's Pornography" by GENRAL::KILGORE (We are the People, Earth & Stars) Tue Apr 25 1989 02:12

I was reading Letters to the Editor in the April 17th issue of Newsweek and
couldn't believe what I was reading. Here is the letter minus the name of the
people that wrote the letter (without permission).

	COVER UP

There is no justification for running a picture of a
topless women on the beach at St. Napa (International,
March 13). We've always used your magazine as a tool to
help teach our sons about current events, but there's no
way that we'll show them such pornography. You really
let us down on this one!

signed by a couple from Ann Arbor, Mich.

I thought, "Wow! I must have missed a doozie of an article and photo!" So
I looked up our March 13th issue of Newsweek and found (on page 39) a 2-1/2"
by 3-1/2" (dimensions approx) photo of a crowded beach with 4 recognizable
women without tops. Give me a break!

I suggest if mr and mrs Ann Arbor wants to see pornography (in my eyes) they
should check out page 37 of the same issue their letter appeared. They'd see
about a dozen and a half dead bodies, with visable gapping wounds, in various
states of undress (including one with the penis exposed), body parts missing...
its too gross to go on. Now that is sick. And what is sick about a part of
the human body that their kids have probably seen more of than they will ever
know?

    Judy-

Unfortunately, in todays society (in the US anyway), violence is
far more acceptable than the human body au natural. I have often
wondered what is the problem with a society that finds it completely
acceptable to have an over abundance of physical violence portrayed,
even on Sat. morn. cartoons, yet they deem it necessary to censor
a cartoon of a female elf when the cartoonist put mamaries on it
    (Walt Dizzy Studios).
