137.0. "Comic strips ;-)" by SWAPIT::SCHMUHL () Wed Feb 22 1989 13:27

" Sweeps " have hit the comics! Has anyone seen "Bloom County" this
week? It appears our heros are nude this week due to "sweeps". Today's
strip asks the question "isn't this a mostly ugly male strip?"

I'd considered protesting to Breathed directly on that last comment, as
it depends on your point of view. Certainly purists oughtn't adopt the
    ugly-body prejudice against anyone.

I love the strategically placed bits of Americana (cereal boxes, flower
pots...). A great comment on the usual (U.S.) portrayal of visits to
    naked people places.

Note also that for the last week and a half or so, poor Grimm (the
hapless dog of Mother Goose & Grimm), has realized that he's naked.
He can't seem to decide whether to be embarrassed or to moon the
    mail carrier.

but Mother Goose and Grimm have had `nude' comics for over a week now!
Picture this:

2/14 Grimm (the dog) is walking downtown among the crowded streets
filled with people. He says "Boy. People are crazy, they go
to all this trouble every morning. They brush their teeth,
shower, and get dresses just to come downtown."

Shows him with a great big grin on his face..."I don't have to
get dressed to come down town. I'm naked."

Now he realizes what he's said and is embarressed. "I'm standing
	downtown, totally naked."

2/15	Continues from previous day. Grimm is standing there with this
stunned look on his face. "This is so embarrassing, maybe if I
stand here quietly...nobody will notice that I'm not wearing any
	clothes."

He gets this weird look on his face and starts wagging his tail
and grins fiendishly, "Dogs should be obscene and not heard."

2/16	Still has the fiendish grin and is just standing there. "There
are advantages to being naked..." A mailman walks by. Grimm
starts wagging his tail like crazy. "For example, I just mooned
	the mailman." :-)

2/17 Grimm is dashing madly about, hiding behind various items such as
park benches, trees and buildings. "I don't believe it. All this
time I've been running around totally naked...I always thought I
	was just wearing fun fur."

2/18	Grimm zipping behind a power/telephone pole, tail wagging then
zipping over behind a tree. "Is it streaking when you're the only
	one who knows you're naked?"

2/20	Grimm is still running around town, peeking out from behind buildings.
"What am I going to do? I'm running around in my birthday suit.
Streaking from one alley to another...mooning or flashing everybody
I see...There are a million stories in the naked city."

2/23	Grimm is looking out from behind a trash can. "Look, there's another
	dog who's naked, and another...and another...Hey, wait a minute.
Maybe it's OK that we are naked. Maybe it's natural for dogs to walk
around without any clothes." [Too bad the same can't go for people.
	;-)!]

Grimm gets this `oh, sh*t' look on his face then stands up and sings.
"Born free, as free as the wind blows..."

These strips sound like a riot (especially those described in .3). But
what are "Sweeps" and why/how are they causing the characters in Bloom
County to brave it in the buff? (and where can I get mine? :->)

    1. Sweeps is the term applied to the period in February when rating
points of viewers are used to determine advertising rates for the
year. Networks and stations are known to trot out their best or
most sensational stuff during the sweeps to garner more viewers
and , set the highest ad rates.

    2. Sure there are carriers still. Don't you watch "CHEERS?"

An old joke from a local comic strip:

Uncle Dick: I believe you belong to a nudist colony, m'dear!

Young Lady: Yes I do, Uncle Dick

Uncle Dick: And how did you become a Nudist?

Young lady: Oh, I didn't BECOME a nudist...

    			I was born one!

Joe: You ought to join our Car Club Nudist Camp,
    			Dickie. It's fun!

Uncle Dick: Yeah! but only one thing would worry me, Joe.

    Joe: What's That?

Uncle Dick: Well, when a member parks his car, what does
    			he do with the Key?

now that I finally got in, I can post this....

from last Monday's "CALVIN & HOBBES" comic strip:

1st panel - Calvin is jumping out of bed, ready for another day, and is
saying "Every day it's the same old thing."

2nd panel - As he is taking off his PJs, Calvin continues, "...but not
    today!"

3rd panel - Calvin is pictured headed out the door clearly free of
textile encumbrances and his mother is making a desprate grab to stop
    him.

4th panel - Calvin, reluctantly now getting dressed, laments,
    "Everybody's a slave to routine."

This is from the Sunday "Grin and Bear It" comics from July 29th.

Picture 2 cave women bent over a pond or river washing out their skin clothing
and other clothing is drying on a line in the background. The caption reads:

"Whose idea was it to start wearing clothes, anyway?"
