134.0. "Body Language" by TLE::PETERSON (Bob) Thu Feb 02 1989 15:03

    In another note it crossed my mind that body language would be greatly
    enhanced by being naked. Since I've only been to skinny dipping places
    and had limited contact with others, perhaps notes with more, er,
    exposure to groups of naked folk could comment?

    From what I do know in a one-on-one conversation there is an air of
    either instant trust or mistrust, therefore one thing communicated
    right away is how much trust you have in the people you're talking
    with. The less trust, the less comfortable you'd be to being seen
    naked; it'd also affect how much you'd fidget or even whether you'd
    turn fully to face your co-conversationalist!

    Any thoughts?

    There tends to be more eye-to-eye contact during a conversation
    among naturists. (Right, Judy?) I would think that this makes it
    harder to observe how the other person is reacting physically reacting.
134.2Alot more eye contactGENRAL::KILGORECherokee WomanFri Feb 03 1989 18:3720
I think alot more eye-contact occurs. That was pointed out in the Geraldo
show on nudism. Geraldo said he was afraid to look anywhere else! ;-)

Besides eye-contact, I don't think I have paid in particular attention to
body-language. I haven't been one to follow it. Just because someone
crosses their legs or fidgets with their fingernails, doesn't necessarily
mean anything besides they are getting more comfortable or they have a
compulsive habit.

I know I feel comfortable around most nudists, we all appear to have something
in common...liking to get naked. But there are times, that something doesn't
`click' and there is an uncomfortable aura there. That's when I leave or
cover up with a towel or robe. I try to also figure out why there was this
uncomfortableness and get to the root of the problem...if there is one. And
this delves into upbringing and childhood. And some not so happy memories.

Some people claim they can read people like a book from their body-language.
I'm not so sure about that.

    I agree with the estimations of 70's psychobabble Body Language; I
    guess I set my own trap by trying to be inclusive of that. I was more
    interested in real communication, which does include body posture,
    movement and facial expression. Ask any deaf person.

    So... maybe I'll do my own observations, maybe plan a game of charades
    this summer.
134.4What is not covered.IOENG::JWILLIAMSWelcome to the Bush LeagueTue Jul 18 1989 20:318
    I don't think there's anything more that's conveyed when nude than
    otherwise. Most "body" language is in the expressions, gestures,
    and postures, which a visible with or without clothing. I do notice I
    smile alot ( usually because I'm enjoying myself ).

    Doesn't seem that different to me, only more so.
