91.0. "Wreck Beach Report" by TEMPE1::GAFFNEY (Paul) Sun Jul 24 1988 20:22

I recently spent 11 days up in Vancouver and spent a sat. and a sun.
at Wreck beach. The beach is located at the end of a peninsula next
to the University of British Columbia The beach is about the size of
two football fields end to end with thin spits of land trailing off
at either end for a quarter mi.. You walk down a steep trail through
a rain forest which blocks the view of the beach from the road.
Their is a log boom full of logs stored off the beach and since the
logs get washed ashore sometimes the beach is full of drift wood and
splinters of wood. This coupled with tens of thousands of cig. butts
makes the beach look like the world largest ash tray. The ocean may
look fresh and inviting but the bacteria count of the Vancouver beaches
is sometimes dangerously high. The city refuses to report the levels
for liability reasons. So you may ask why go? The reason is A GREAT
PARTY ATMOSPHERE. On a good day the beach is packed with friendly
folks a good mixture of couples, single men and women. Mostly nude
but many people (men & women) were dressed for an erotic effect.
Lots of people playing musical instruments, vendors selling Wreck
beach souvenirs, hot food, cold food, soft drinks, hard drinks, drugs,
massages, whatever. Great conversations, not clique, a couple dozen
kids, a high energy place for sure. It reminded me of the kind of people
who went to west coast nude beaches of the early 70's. The beaches
are still there but the friendly people have gone somewhere else.
For a quiet back to nature setting walk south along the beach until
it is quiet enough. Or better yet visit one of the islands off the coast,
many are uninhabited or sparsely populated.
Just remember before you go to this area be prepared for rain it can
happen any time of the year.

91.1Wreck Beach - a lasting impressionJETSAM::HANAUERMike... Bicycle~to~Ice~CreamWed Jul 27 1988 16:1625
Up to now I've been read only, but this note on Wreck beach inspired
me. I have been to Nude beaches in the US, Canada and Europe,
mostly on bicycle tours which I love.

Wreck Beach is a truely unique place, it is everything Paul says and
much more. Wreck beach is emotionally inspiring, it is an example
of humans being able to relate totally as humans - without the
normal "first impression" and really trivial stuff that often masks
people or honest impressions.

At Wreck Beach I played vollyball in the nude.
At Wreck Beach I saw folks who had shaved.
At Wreck Beach I saw a number of pregnant women.

At Wreck Beach I saw two woman who had had mastectomies.

At Wreck Beach I saw people being who and what they are without
shame. People did not judge other people based on any kind of
prejudice. Individuals were inherently considered to be kind and
good as the only starting point.

If there was ever a model for what the Earth should be, Wreck Beach
would not be a bad example. It was an attitude I will never forget.

Anybody traveling to the Northwest ought to check out Wreck Beach
around the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Clean
white sand, temperate climate, and thousands of nature lovers
free from legal harassment and voyeurs.
91.3Not hot enough yet..KAOFS::D_BIGELOWLife's a beach!Tue Feb 14 1989 14:0319
    RE: .0

YES, great place, but it's too cold yet.

Kind of funny, really. A couple of weeks ago, temperatures
in Vancouver dropped to about -15C, and they even had some snow
in the outlying areas. The Minster of Transportation in Vancouver
(I think it was her) declared a "state of emergency", while
such temperatures are common place throughout most of the rest
    	of Canada.

I was in Vancouver about two years ago this month,
and they were pushing up tulips all over the place. It was
quite nice, with warm spring temperatures, but was rainy and
although warm, certainly not warm enough for the beach. I don't
think it starts to get hot there until late April.
