80.0. "_Naturally_ (was _The Event_)" by MOIRA::FAIMAN (A goblet, a goblet, yea, even a hoop) Fri Jul 01 1988 14:29

I've quoted from _The Event_ often enough, so I suppose it's time to
    write a note about it.

_The Event_ is a quarterly naturist magazine with the subtitle,
"Journal of Clothes-Optional Living on the Eastern Seaboard." It
definitely has an east-coast orientation -- I believe that it was
originally the publication of the Tri-State (New York, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania?) Metro Naturists, before it became independent -- but I
would say the magazine is of general naturist interest rather than
    purely regional interest.

Issues are about 40 pages. There is a good mix of text and
photography. All the photos are in black and white (although one issue
last year had a full-color cover, and it seems likely that the whole
magazine might convert to color in a while). The magazine is well-
produced and professional (although they appear to be converting to a
new computer type-setting system, and there were a batch of
justification and word-spacing problems in the last issue).

By contrast with _Clothed with the Sun_, which will often devote half
an issue to topics like "Nudity and the Arts throughout History",
"Nudity and Modern American Culture", or "Nudity and Religion", _The
Event_ generally focuses on more specifically naturist concerns, such
as legal proceedings or the fight over a particular beach. There are
also articles and columns on the "philosophy" of naturism. I
personally have gotten a lot out of the monthly column by Nina Silver,
    a prominent feminist/naturist.

Contents of the the latest issue (Number 26, Spring 1988) include:

Extensive site reports for Florida and for the northeast states,
including a lot of obscure western Massachusetts sites. (A note at
the beginning says that "future editions of _The Event_ will bring
you reports on areas we missed as we cover one selected state per
issue, including all naturist contacts and resort/club facilities
within that state. In the summer edition we'll uncover the state
        of Ohio.")

A guest editorial on the shortsightedness of Florida's repressive
anti-nudity policies, which make the state less attractive to
vacationers, and particularly backward-looking to European
	visitors.

Reports on various court cases and naturist movement news.

"The International Naturist", a regular column, with information on
travel documents (passports, visas, etc.) needed when visiting
	Europe and the Caribbean.

"Sexual deviants, or a sick society", an article calling for the
	decriminalization of "nonlascivious exhibitionism".

"The Conscience", a regular column, arguing that nudism must become
"Nudism" to effectively demand recognition and rights. [I am not
	convinced - NF]

And of course, letters, classifieds, and miscellaneous items.

I would recommend _The Event_. Subscriptions $14 per year (four
    issues), $30 non-US air mail, $22 non-US surface mail.

80.1Issue 27 (Summer 1988) ContentsMOIRA::FAIMANA goblet, a goblet, yea, even a hoopTue Sep 13 1988 14:1534
Issue 27 (Summer 1988) of _The Event_ has just come out.
    40 pages -- contents include:

"Naturism and Humanism", a guest editorial (why naturists ought to
	look into humanism)

	Articles on legal issues --

A constitutional criticism of the Woodlock decision on the Cape
		Cod case
The Cahill Policy (on nude use in California state parks)
The legal battle over Moonstone Beach
Why the naturist movement desperately needs to *win* a court
		case
	    Topfree Equality Day in Rochester
Harassment at Clearwater Beach in Florida

"Silvermine", Nina Silver's regular (and excellent) column --
	    memories of her mother.

	Ohio site updates

Two articles on discrimination against singles in organized nudism

Articles on Prospect of Whitby, a clothing-optional resort on North
	    Caicos Island near the Bahamas

An article by Nikki Craft analyzing a photo from an earlier issue
of The Event. She makes some strong points about pornography
	    and sexual power

	Letters and other miscellaneous items

80.2Issue 28 (Fall/Winter 1988) ContentsMOIRA::FAIMANlight upon the figured leafThu Jan 12 1989 15:1877
Issue 28 (Fall/Winter 1988) of _The Event_ contents:

A guest editorial urging the _ASA Bulletin_ (official magazine of
American Sunbathing Association, the main US nudist organization)
to reject advertising from _Health and Effeciency_, an English
magazine which "portrays itself as the `world's most popular
naturist magazine' yet is in fact predominantly a `girlie
magazine,' featuring photos of women in sexually provocative
	poses."

Several letters, pro and con, on Nikki Craft's photo analysis from
	the previous issue.

Articles on modeling and art --

"The Art of Modeling," by Hugh Kilmer (a naturist and artist)
argues for modeling as "a performing arts profession which
demands respect, adequate payment, and solid, continuous
education in order to be at its best."

"Just Being Myself... the art of a model" describes the
benefits of modeling to the model. (The author, Judy Beck,
wrote "Consent... through a woman's eyes" in an earlier issue
of _The Event_. Both were excellent articles. I will be on
the lookout for writing by her in the future.)

"A Model's First Naturist Experience with the Dutch" describes
the experience of doing photo modeling for a Dutch naturist
photo group. The overall tone is "Boy, these naturists sure do
have weird hangups about a natural thing like nudity."

"The Stand-Ins" -- An editorial pointing out that the typical
restrictions on photography in nudist camps and other naturist
settings contribute to photographers' preference for working
with paid models, who are more cooperative, ultimately leading
to inaccurate and even exploitative photographic
representations of naturism. "To picture the REAL naturism, we
must first learn to accept visibility."

"Art censored in New Jersey" -- An account of an art exhibit
where nude photographs were removed from the exhibit because
	    some visitors found them offensive.

An article by Dennis Kirkpatrick of NENA on the Massachusetts child
pornography law (which makes *any* nude photography of a minor a
felony), and on the general need for naturists and nudists to be
concerned about state laws which may be radically inconsistent with
	nudism:

"Do you know that some states may have laws already on the
books that prohibit the congregation of mixed genders in the
nude, or which prohibit adults and children from associating in
the nude? Have you checked your state's laws lately? Is your
landed club really "safe," or have you been lucky so far? If
neither you nor your club owners/operators can answer these
	    questions, it's time to act."

A cutting from a Maine newspaper on Drake's Island (posted
separately as note 66.7), and an article by Emile Guay, who chose
to be arrested at Drake's Island to challenge the Maine indecent
exposure law as it has been applied to simple beach nudity (see
        note 66.6).

John Kyff's article on the Cape Cod Case (this is the third place
	I've seen it -- see note 125).

"Bare backpacking White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire"
	(posted separately as note 130).

"International Naturist" -- miscellaneous items on overseas
	naturist travel.

"Hawaii beach review and directions," by Leif Heilberg.

	Other miscellaneous items.

more women in the naturist movement?" [Nina Silver is, to my mind, the
most articulate and balanced writer for the feminist position in

provoking. I regard her column as one of the highlights of _The
	Event_. -NF]

80.5Issue 30 (Summer 1989) ContentsMOIRA::FAIMANlight upon the figured leafWed Jul 05 1989 18:2433
Issue 30 (Summer 1989) of _The Event_ contents:

_The Event_ is going to glossy paper throughout, better photographic
reproduction, fewer pages (to keep the price down). Some regular
columns will be dropped. [Personally, I thought the ordinary paper and
the photo quality were fine, and I'm really going to miss Nina Silver's
column. I guess this is the cost of going more "mass market," though.]

    Letters

    Florida reports
	- Tallahassee
	- Miami Beach (see note 185.0)

Georgia nudist camp denied a business license (after heavy opposition,
including the local Ku Klux Klan)

"Why go public?" -- how being open about her lifestyle may have saved
one nudist from legal problems from an zealous photo-lab employee

"Nudity in films" -- very brief survey, 1916-present -- rather
	superficial

Review of Raffles naturist hotel in Palm Springs, California

"Reflections on nudity in Europe and Central America" -- geographical
survey; tolerance in Europe, repression in Latin America; some
theorizing on the roles of politics and culture

35th anniversary celebration for the International Nudist Information
	Center in Holland

80.6_The Event_ => _Naturally_MOIRA::FAIMANlight upon the figured leafWed Sep 26 1990 16:0422
I just received a notice that _The Event_ is to be superseded by a new magazine
called _Naturally_. I'll just quote from the letter:

The slick-paper quarterly will be a complete departure from its
forerunner, with new layout, focus and features, with an 8-page
color section in the first issue, which is expected to expand in
later ones. Features of interest mainly to naturist and nudist
organizations, such as the letter column and routine club news,
will not appear, as NATURALLY will be, says Loibl [the publisher],
"the magazine of the naturist/nudist community, not of any
baturist/nudist organization or group of organizations."

As Loibl sees it, the focus of NATURALLY will be people -- "people
working, palying, socializing in clothing-optional settings" -- and
that pictorial values will be emphasized strongly, with more pictures,
all of professional quality, being used throughout. Early issues of
the new quarterly are expected to feature an extensive exploration
of the nudist community Cap d'Agde in France and complete coverage of
Loibl's planned on-the-spot survey of the thriving naturist scene in
    Germany and eastern Europe.

Subscriptions are $18/year from NATURALLY, Box 203, Pequannock, NJ 07440.
