21.1From Neck-to-Knee to NudeAUSSIE::BELLPeter L. BellFri Jan 06 1989 02:099
There was a program on Sydney TV this week titled "From Neck-to-Knee to
Nude" which traced developments in bathing attire from the first days
of convict settlement to today. Various fashion experts and historians
gave there view on the attire of the times, and the whole lot was tied
together by the (female) presenter who modelled the various costumes.

The program concluded on Reef beach (see .0) with the presenter nude,
and the comment "People can now choose what they wear on the beach
one piece costumes, bikinis, topless, or nude."

21.4Southside beachAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estMon Feb 05 1990 07:1114
We ventured futher from home to go nuding this year, and found
Southside Beach. Its the next beach south from Bell's beach (no
relation as far as I know), Victoria's most famous Surfing Beach.

Southside beach is a little over a kilometre long (say 3/4 of a
mile) and when we visited the tide was out showing plenty of sand.

You need to pick a ggod day as the beach faces nearly South, and
when a Southery blows you feel it! The nearest facilities are at
Bells Beach two kilometres away, so you need to be prepared.

If you need directions drop me a line.

21.6Hidden Valley -- Mackay, QueenslandAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estFri Jul 27 1990 11:0348
One the second of July the Bell family set out on an adventure, a
camping trip to the tropics away from the the cold Sydney winter.

Our destination: "Hidden Valley" a small clothing optional camping
ground some 25 Kilometre (Km) inland from Mackay in Queensland, some
    2000 Km north of Sydney.

We arrived two days later to be greeted by Dudley the octagenarian
caretaker, dressed in a deep brown suntan. I then found out that I had
neglected to tell our children that Hidden Valley was clothing
optional, but it didn't really matter, they all had their clothes off
within minutes of leaving the car. I erected the tent nude (thats me
nude not the tent :-), and settled in to a weeks relaxation, and
playing with the kids (guess which I did more of).

Hidden Valley must be hard to find, the peak population was about 20
the whole time we were there (including the 5 of us), so there were no
queues, no rush, just do what you want, when you want.

The kids insisted on swimming in the creek, which was *cold*, I joined
them to keep an eye on them (the youngest two can't swim with out their
    rubber rings).

There is plenty of wild life around (animal kind) with Bandicoots
raiding our rubbish tin, several small Wallabies (a small type of
kangaroo) one of which was very tame, many noisy kookaburras, who woke
us up each morning with their laughing, and the odd scrub turkey. Some
other animals included the five donkeys, and a horse, which lived on
the other side of the creek, and the odd cane toad.

Mackay is in the heart of the sugar growing part of Queensland. All the
local talk was anout the forth-comming harvest, and when the mills
would start crushing. Its also a good place to start from for tours to
the Great Barrier Reef, which we did not do, but we did take a day tour
to Brampton Island, where I introduced my nine-year-old to sailing in a
small cat, I think she's hooked! The resort at Brampton is located on
one small corner of the Island, and the rest is national park, we spen
most of the day at the resort, with the kids in the water and on the
sand, and the adults in deck chairs under the palms. We re-joined the
reef tour to find that it had been rough out at the reef, and half the
passengers were sea sick. We were glad that we did not go, three kids
on a smallish boat for seven hours in rough seas....

Enough of that. If you want a quiet nude holiday, and are prepared to
rough it a little, then I recommend "Hidden Valley", only I suggest
that July is a little cold, try it between mid September and May.

Peter.
21.7Reef Beach latestAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estMon Nov 26 1990 07:4021
Yesterday I thought about taking the family to Reef beach for the
afternoon, but decided that the easterly winds forecast would make it
too cool, so we stayed at home.

It would have been an exciting afternoon.... the Sydney Morning Herald
    takes up the story....

"Dozens of picnickers were rescued, several streets of houses were
threatened and an evacuation of 150 nude sunbathers was planned when a
wild bushfire ripped through Sydney Harbour National Park at Balgowlah
Heights. The fire broke out on Dobroyd Head about 1PM and spread
quickly through the dense eucalypt bushland, fanned by strong
    north-easterly winds."

Sydney has had little rain in the last month, and the bush is very dry,
a strong wind will very quickly turn a small fire into a major blaze.

The TV pictures were quite frightening, I'm glad I was NOT there.

Peter.

21.8MoreAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estSat Dec 22 1990 06:5015
We finally made it to Reef Beach this morning (Saturday 22/12), the
bush on one side of the track down has been burnt by fire, the other
side is still green and growing. Its too early to say if the bug trees
have been destroyed by the fire, but all the undergrowth is gone.

The beach is much as it was, a mixture of ages, from 20 months to 70+.
With a gap from 10 to about 25 years, enjoying the sun, and water.

Our kids were in the water about 60 seconds after we arrived, and
    greeting old friends.

Now Christmas is nearly over, I hope we can visit more often, and enjoy
    the summer.

21.10A perfect start to the day.AUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estThu Apr 04 1991 20:009
I went for an early morning swim at Reef Beach this morning. I arrived just as
the sun shone out from behind distant clouds, the beach was deserted, but a few
foot prints showed that some people had been there before me.

The air was cool but the water warm, and clear. I was tempted to stay all day!

Must do this again some time.

Hi Larry,

I was in the front row, near the middle, asking difficult questions, and

I also helped you find the bank, and was part of the group who had lunch in the
park one day.

Come back some time when its warmer!

21.14Pacific Sun Friends - Nudist Camp Ground - QueenslandAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estSat Oct 12 1991 07:2159
The Bell family holiday this spring was to the area about 50 Kilometre North of
Brisbane in Queensland. Since our winter holiday last year to Mackay (see note
21.6) the kids have been asking to return, but I did not want to drive for
three days (each way), so we looked up "Bare Facts" (see note 21.5) and came up
with "Pacific Sun Friends" near Caboolture. A quick phone call arranged space
for the tent for a week, and a couple more, places to stay on the way.

We arrived mid afternoon, and found the office deserted, a quick look around
located a nude lady hanging out the washing, Jan, the co-owner with her husband
James, quickly completed the few formalities, and directed us to our tent site.

As it was a warm day, we soon stripped, and started setting up the tents. We
had an extra tent this year which housed the two older kids, leaving more room
in the main tent for clothes etc.

Pacific has an aim of being environmentally friendly, the water for showers is
solar heated, most of the electricity comes from solar cells using battery's for
night time. One of James's projects is to erect a wind powered generator. Near
our tent was a wood fired outdoor shower, which doubled as a BBQ.

Our first days we very quiet, we swam in the creek, played ball, and Frisbee
games, watched the kangaroos, and other wildlife, and generally relaxed.

There was a mob of five 'roos which often grazed near our tent, including a
joey who still spent some time in his mothers pouch.

There were a few others resident and some day visitors, but because the place
is so big (140 acres) you did not feel crowded, even on the week end when the
numbers expanded.

On the Saturday our kids joined two of the other families of children at the
beach, there were seven naked kids aged 5 to 10 happily playing together for
much of the day.

On Sunday the club held its annual "frisbee-golf" competition. My eldest
daughter and I entered, she came second by one "stroke" in the girls section,
and I was about fourth in the mens section.

"Frisbee-golf" is played by throwing a Frisbee into a bucket in the smallest
number of throws, each throw being taken from the place the Frisbee stopped
after the previous throw.

Jan and James were very unintrusive hosts, we were very much left to do what we
wanted, when we wanted. We did spend one evening with them talking nudism,
theology, psychology, solar energy, and other interesting odds and ends.

All in all a very relaxing week.

Peter.

PS. If you visit Pacific, be very careful when driving around, I just missed
a kangaroo on two occasions, once during the day and once at night.

21.17Birdie BeachAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estSat Dec 28 1991 02:1024
We visited "Birdie Beach" a few days ago, its about 130 Km north of
Sydney, but easily reached by the Newcastle Expressway. The CO portion
of the beach is about 300 metres long, and separated from the clothing
required section (topfree bathing allowed) by a small sign.

It's an ocean beach, with large areas of sand, and a small creek
suitable for children to play and swim in. The water is clean and
unpolluted (compared with many beaches close to Sydney).

An unoffical "Beach Inspector" with lifesaving equipment, and safe
swimming flags help make it a safe beach for swimmers.

The clothed and unclothed people seem to mix freely, especially the
teenage surfers (clothed) with the nude swimmers, and the children at
the creek, I also saw one woman walk from the textile section to the
nude section, remove her bathing costume, and go for a swim.

My children were very excited when we met Barry, who we often see at
Reef Beach, he pointed out several other Reef Beach regulars who were
    at Birdie Beach that day.

    We'll be back again.

Trip report Pacific Sun Friends and Phoenix Recreation (Queensland Australia)
from Peter and Elizabeth, and our children Jenny, Timmy, and Katie.

Our holidays started on a low note with the children being affected by a virus
which meant the cancellation of Timmy's Birthday Party, but we left Sydney on
the Monday Morning, car fully laden. Monday night we stayed at a conventional
cavern park about half way to our final destination, and mid-afternoon we
arrived at Pacific Sun Friends, which is about 50 Kilometre north of Brisbane.

We booked in and quickly found a spot to pitch the tents on one edge of the
large grassy picnic and camping area, not far from the BBQ. With a little help
from Laurie, one of the residents, we soon had the tents up, and most of the
other gear inside. Just in time, as down came the rain accompanied by a strong
wind. I got soaked racing around outside, replacing guy ropes, and making sure
nothing blew down, add to your list of advantages of nude camping, you can race
out in a storm and fix guy ropes without getting your clothes wet.

Pacific has not changed greatly since we were there last year (see 21.14), the
main addition was a new shower block close to were we camped, the block was
labelled "UNISEX", and had two showers in a very open arrangement. The water was
heated by a solar collector on the roof, which provided hot water most of the
time. The favourite time for showers was mid-afternoon, when the water was
hotest, it became quite a social and family time.

The second day there while shaving I met a girl, Jody, in the shower block, and
found out she was almost the same age as my daughter Jenny, a little
encouragement and the two of them were good friends. This has two main effects,
firstly as Jody lives at Pacific (she is the niece of the owners) she knows her
was around the place, and was able to suggest places to swim and things to do
that we and the kids would not have known about, secondly, we felt that we had
four kids instead of three, until Jody went back to school shortly before we
left (school holiday dates in Australia vary from state to state).

One of the interesting aspects of Pacific is that it has no connection to mains
electricity, a disadvantage at times as there was a few petrol generators
around that were noisy in an otherwise very quiet environment, they use a
mixture of solar cells and wind generators to keep their batteries charged, and
a static inverter to provide 240 volt 50 Hz AC (The standard mains in
Australia). The lights in the shower block were controlled by infrared people
sensors, so that they only came on when it was dark and a warm body moved into
view. The static inverter seem to work well, except when a Micro-wave oven was
in use then the voltage fluctuated noticably with about a 1 Hz frequency.
Heating is provided by solar water heaters and wood.

The BBQ near which we camped has in its chimney a coil of copper pipe, and
water after running through the pipe goes to a nearby outdoor shower. So our
afternoon routine was to light the BBQ, have a warm shower, and then cook
dinner on the hot plate.

Our days were mostly spend swimming, playing minten (a reduced form of tennis)
and watching the kids riding bikes, or bouncing on trampolines, and talking
with the other inhabitants and visitors. Our nearest neighbours were a couple
from the state of Tasmania, who were touring around Australia's naturist
establishments, they had been at Hidden Valley, near Mackay, where we has stayed
about two years ago, so we compared notes. One of the day visitors was an art
teacher who practised his sketching by drawing Katie, and Timmy, we now have
two delightful sketches to add to our art collection. He also drew Jody while
she was wearing a swim suit, she appears nude in the drawing, a good
likeness, but I think he used a low calorie pencil :-).

After a week of quiet nude relaxing it was time to move on. The next stop was
Phoenix Recreation, where we were staying for two nights, the main attraction
was a day at Warner Brothers "Movie World" on the Gold Coast, and Phoenix was
the closed nudist place I could find (and half the price of textile places on
the Gold Coast!). It took us a little time to find Phoenix, its tucked away
behind an industrial estate with only one access road, but we made it.

Phoenix has a high fence which curves around the gate so that no part of the
property is visible from the road, and the gate was locked, so we rang the
front gate bell. It was answered by Sheryle wearing only a towel, she let us in
and showed us to our van, near the swimming pool. After a few minutes unpacking
to find the towels, the swimming pool was invaded by naked bodies.

Derek and Sheryle have recently taken over the lease on Phoenix, which as risen
out of the ashes (so to speak) of a previous nudist club. They live there with
their three children (two girls and a boy) and are trying to re-build the
place, some parts of which were rather run down. Sheryle was very helpful to us
and went out of her way to may our stay enjoyable. She also suggested that next
time we should be around for a weekend, as the place is much more lively then.
I can well imaging it. The covered area next to the pool is setup for disco
dancing with a professional sound system, and flashing lights. There is also a
spa, and a small gym, as well as tennis courts and BBQs.

Phoenix is close to the Gold Coast, and all its tourist attractions, but also
far enough away not to be affected by all the glitz. Our usual plan is to take
the kids to one major Theme park each time we come to Queensland, this year
Movie World, next year ...? Anyhow, what ever it is, I think that Phoenix will
be our base.

That's the end of the nude part of our holidays, the rest was kilometres of
driving and a few relatives, nothing to write up for the nudists of the world.

Do let me know if your heading my way, especially now its almost summer here.

Peter.

21.20River Island Nature RetreatAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estWed Jan 27 1993 09:5453
Trip Report:

The New Years weekend was too tempting to miss, especially when I could take an
extra day and make it a four day weekend. So we packed the car with tents and
kids and went CO camping. Destination: River Island Nature Retreat.

RINR is about 2 and a half hours drive from Sydney, mostly through the
suburbs, and a four lane highway. But the last 40 Kilometres are a narrow
winding dirt road. We arrived a little after lunch and found a camp site near
the river, the tents were soon up, and we set out to explore.

RINR consists of a hill surrounded on three sides by the Wollondilly River
(hence the name) Only a small part of the 250 hectares are used for camping
etc. so there is plenty of room for everyone. The human habitations centre on
the Swimming Pool, Sauna, Spas (three of them), a small Store, the "Barn", and
the Billabong Cafe (a small Clothing Optional restaurant).

The first night, being New Years Eve, there was New Years Eve party, dancing,
food, and live music till past midnight. The accent was on original T-shirts,
with a prize for the best. Some people wore T-shirts and nothing else, some
just wore a thin line around their necks, arms, and waist, outlining the
T-shirt. The best to my mind were two women, nude, except for painted on
T-shirts and shorts, done in black paint with red paint for sashes.

The rest of the time we spent walking, swimming, talking, watching for
platypus, and swinging of a rope into the water.

Then on the Saturday afternoon the storm hit! Wind and rain, thunder and
lightning, we sheltered in our tent, apart from brief trips outside to tighten
the guy ropes. Then Flash/BANG!!! lightning struck a tree 20 metres from the
tent, knocking off a branch and blowing one side of the tree away. We survived!

After the storm, I put my socks and sneakers on and went to talk with the
family in the next door caravan and was greeted with the comment "You are well
dressed today" :-). Looking back I spent three full days nude, and enjoyed
every minute of it.

There is a variety of wild life at RINR, we saw kangaroos, goannas, and a brief
glimpse of a platypus. The noise from the birds early in the morning is almost
deafening. The goannas are one to two metres long, and love eggs, the campers
sometimes put eggs out for them to eat, and to entice them from the bushes, so
that they can be photographed.

In the end we didn't want to leave. But we'll be back.

The battle for Reef Beach -- Round 2

I don't have the full story about this as I was not there, but from watching
the TV coverage, this is my image of what happened.

Monday Feb 1 1993 was the first day of the "new regulations" at Reef Beach,
expressly prohibited: Nudity. (Note: topfree bathing is widely practised at
almost all Sydney beaches, so it would not be a problem at Reef Beach).

So on Saturday Feb 6th, the Reef Beach regulars held a nude protest, with media
including TV invited, plus some speeches, and other entertainment. The "Beach
Inspectors" were also present, taking names and addresses, the one which was
caught by the TV microphones was "John Citizen, Parliament House.....". I wonder
how they will follow that one up?

The TV coverage was very cautious, just enough bare flesh for you to get the
idea, but nothing explicit, except for the last seen which showed a small boy
and girl (both about 4 or 5) playing nude on the beach.

Its difficult to predict what will happen in the long run. The nudists are
working on making the exercise as expensive as possible for the Manly Council,
and emphasising to the media how much it will cost the council to try and enforce
the regulations, in the hope that the council will back down. Its also
considered likely that the courts will rule against the Council if a case ever
comes to court, one the grounds of previous nude use of the beach, and the
problems of who has control over the beach.

More as it happens.

Peter.

21.22Pacific Sun Friends revisited in the middle of WinterAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estMon Jul 12 1993 04:2324
Who would go to a nudist resort in the middle of winter?

Well we did, I wanted to attend a workshop at the University of Queensland, and
with the current restrictions on travel, Digital could not pay any airfares, so
I deceided to drive, when I talked this over with Elizabeth, she said, "Its
school holidays, why don't we all go. The kids and I can stay at Pacific, while
you drive in to the Uni". So we did!

Pacific has not changed much from out last visit (see note 21.18), its quite and
relaxing (at least until the kids hit the place), its also far enough north for
sunny days to be warm enough for going nude. So while I worked, the kids had
fun, playing tennis, riding their bikes, paddling in the creek, (the water was
too cold for swimming), covering themselves with mud, etc.

The next caravan to ours was occupied by an amateur astronomer, who set up his
telescope between the two vans. The kids and I all has a look at Jupiter and its
moons, Mars, and various other interesting astronomical objects (heavenly
bodies?).

All too soon it was time to head home.

Oh, the workshop, thats a topic for a different conference.

21.24Spring is here!AUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estSun Sep 19 1993 23:2724
With the approach of the Spring Equinox, and loud clamours from the kids, we set
of for the beach on Sunday. We decided to buy a season entry permit for the
National Parks ($50) instead of paying $7 per visit so I guess we need at least
7 more visits to make it worth while (-: (Australia smile)

It was warm enough for going nude, and the kids went swimming in the creek at
Birdie Beach, the eldest also went in the surf, in her wet suit!

There was a wind blowing, but we were sheltered from the worst of it by the
cliffs.

There were a few others around, we saw about 10 people in total, but its still
early in the season.

The New South Wales government has changed the laws relating to nudity, there is
now a $500 fine for being nude on a beach or similar public area, unless there
is a sign stating that nudity is permitted. This law is part of the local
government act, which gives the local councils and shires the power to decalre a
nude beach, just by erec... I mean putting up a sign saying that nude bathing is
permitted.

21.25BushfireAUSSIE::BELLCharitas Patiens estFri Jan 28 1994 04:4226
The area around Sydney suffered from major Bushfires over the period 6 Jan to 14
Jan 1994.

I and my Family on the 7th of Jan were returning from A Scripture Union Summer
Mission in the town of Gunnadah (about 450 kM. north west of Sydney). As we
neared Sydney we found the the F3 Freeway virtually the only road going North
out of Sydney had been closed because of the Bushfiles. We ended up staying in a
Church Hall for two nights until the F3 was re-opened on Sun 9th Jan. Our house
was not affected by the fires.

The SNA facility was evacuated on 8th Jan as the fires went through the Lane
Code Valley.

The small section of bush between the SNA facility and the Lane Cove River was
almost completely burnt. Several houses around this section had closed calls.

Even today as I was surveying the damage I noticed a wisp of smoke rising from a
burnt tree stump.

Birdie Beach and the National Park around it was not affected.

I don't yet know how some of the Naturist clubs were affected by the fires. One
is near Mt. White, which is in the middle of the worst of the fires along the
length of the F3.

    Hi Peter!,

How was (and where is) Pacific Sun Friends? My familiy have only
been to a few places around Sydney and Melbourne. Namely, Helios in Vic
and River Valley and a swim night out at Bankstown (can't remember the
    name of the club).

We're looking to go to the new place at Port Stevens this summer.
    It's called Bardot's.

During the last school holidays the Bell family went away for a holiday. Our
main destination was the nudist resort "Pacific Sun Friends" where we camped
for a week.

"Pacific" is located near the town of Caboolture about 50 kilometres north of
Brisbane, it has 140 acres of grounds, much of which is untouched native bush.
A tidal creek runs along one edge of the grounds, and there are a few swimming
spots on its banks. The actual camping/caravan area is grass and big enough for
3 or 4 times the number of tents/vans that inhabit the place. Its a big,
relaxing place.

Apart from a shortage of tent pegs (remedied next day in Caboolture) setting up
camp was easy, and to cool off a quick dip in the creek followed.

The next day established the pattern for most of the week. Breakfast, a quick
shopping trip, and then relaxing for most of the day. As the week went on we
came to meet and know some of the other residents of the camp. The kids were
delighted when Ron invited them to watch "Lois and Clark" in his caravan, along
with most of the other kids in the camp. This turned into a regular evening
activity with my wife and I playing scrabble with Ron while the kids watched
TV.

The only worry we had for the week was the threat of bushfires. As a safety
precaution no open files were allowed in the area, so we could not use the BBQ.
On the Wednesday there was smoke visible from fires in three directions in the
day, and the glow of the fires at nights. Fortunately the camp has so far been
bypassed by the fires. Much of the way home we were to encounter the signs of
fires.

There were about a dozen kids in the camp, including our three. Only the
youngest four or five of them went nude. The older ones (11 to 13 range) stayed
textile.

Our son turned 11 while we were there so we bought a birthday cake, and some
soft drink and invited all the kids in the camp to the party. They had a great
time. Including an ice fight with leftover ice from cooling the drinks. The
party was videoed on Ron's video camera, and we re-lived the party that
evening. My first time nude on video!

Pacific owns two small paddle boats which are moored in the creek near where we
camped. These were a favourite water toy for all the kids, and some of the
adults (I like water toys :-). There was also a rope attached to a tree in a
suitable place to swing into the creek, which was much used.

What else can I say. If you want a place to get away from it, with plenty of
space, friendly people, few facilities, try Pacific Sun Friends.

Some time ago I promised the kids a camping trip, and last weekend we finally
escaped work for a day, and went camping.

We camped in one of the National Parks north of Sydney, near Birdie Beach, which
is CO. After arriving setting up the tent, and eating tea, it was time for a
walk along the beach. It was also dark. No moonlight, but a clear sky with
plenty of stars. The kids were a little scared by the dark at first but soon
relaxed, and enjoyed themselves. We met some fishermen who had caught some
salmon. Then back to the camp ground and to bed. We expected a cold night, and
had enought warm bedding to sleep well.

Next day dawned fine and sunny, with almost no wind. After a relaxed breakfast
we went back to the beach. In the CO section there is a small creek, and the
kids played there. Digging in the sand and paddling st start with, and as the
day warmed up slowly removing layers of clothing. The the requests for a swim
started :-). So at 11 o'clock I gave in to pressure, and we all stripped off and
went swimming (my 14 yo, wore her bikini, she is at the shy stage), and so we
remained until hunger drove us back to the camp for a late lunch. Then packup
and home.

More fun in the sun nude.

On Australia Day (26 jan) I took the kids to Birdie beach for the day.
There were plenty of people there, most of the adult were nude, but
very few of the kids. I tend to blame this on the extensive advertising
that has been done against esposing skin to the sun, and the dangers of
    skin cancer.

I also tried a different CO beach on Sydney harbour, during a quiet
period at work (should be more of them :-). Its a small beach with
little access apart from a steep foot track (and I mean steep), but
very sheltered from the wind, and open to the sun, with a nice section
of grass and trees between the sand and the cliff. There were about 50
people there with many couples. Recommended.

The lastes news from Sydney is that the popular CO beach near Mosman
has benn made a legal CO beack by the State Government.

    Obelisk Beach is now legal.

There may have been other declared legal but I have only heard about
    this one.
