10.0. "The Naturist Society and Clothed with the Sun" by MOIRA::FAIMAN (Ontology Recapitulates Philology) Fri Jan 29 1988 00:20

The Naturists (also known as The Naturist Society, and not to be
confused with naturists, lower-case) is one of the two leading
naturist/nudist organizations in the US. It is located in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin (!), and is pretty much synonymous with its magazine,
_Clothed_with_the_Sun_ ("The Quarterly Journal of Clothes-Optional
Living"), although it also provides "The Naturist Store", selling
books, video-tapes, and other miscellaneous items. From their
    latest brochure:

Joining the Naturist Society offers Body Acceptance. Reasonable
individuals have the natural right to decide if clothing
is appropriate or desirable in a social setting.

Founded 1980, The Naturist Society produces the bestselling
WORLD GUIDE TO NUDE BEACHES & RECREATION (new edition, Spring
        1988).

Naturist members are invited to regional and international
events and various private clubs and resorts. Enjoy networks
of hobbies, sports, and lifestyle. Special travel planning
services. Membership also supports education, legal, and
lobbying projects. [For example, they are bringing suit
against the Cape Cod National Seashore to try to strike down
        special anti-nudity regulations there. -NF]

_Clothed_with_the_Sun_ is large (recent issues have been running
128 pages) and glossy, with an enormous variety of content.
The latest issue has articles about resorts in Florida, Arizona,
    and the Caribbean; "Ads Selling with Nudity"; "Religion & Nudity";
"Nudity in the Family"; "Beach Trash Solution [biodegradable
plastics made with cornstarch]"; and a wide variety of other
material. The previous issue featured articles on "Fashion,
Design, Photography, and the Arts". CwS also contains annual
updates to the World Guide (see note 9.0).

Over the years, CwS has been controversial, championing causes
such as feminism, lesbian/gay rights, anti-circumscision, etc.,
which many of its readers have found irrelevant to nudism.
Recently, there has been controversy over whether the photography
in CwS is "exploitative"--that is, is dominated by posed pictures
of attractive young women, rather than representative pictures
    of family naturism.

Quoting again from the Naturist Society brochure:

Is it time to get CLOTHED WITH THE SUN?

People, swim pools and ponds, vacation hideaways. 400+ pp
annually of features, info updates, reader forums, and color
and b&w photography. Groups and spas, clubs, resorts and
        beaches worldwide.

Subscription, with a full membership in The Naturist Society,
        $25.

Sample copy of CLOTHED WITH THE SUN, $8.

10.1LET'S FOCUS ON ALL PEOPLEUSFHSL::MORRISONSat Jan 30 1988 20:5612
ATTRACTIVE PEOPLE, MEN, CHILDREN, TEENAGERS, AND WOMEN ARE ALL GOOD
TO LOOK AT AS WELL AS ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMEN AND SO I WOULD HOPE
TO SEE THE CwS FOCUS ON ALL AGES AND GENDERS. CERTAINLY TO APPEAL
TO THE PHILOSOPHICAL THRUST (IF THERE IS ANY GENUINE APPEAL) OF
CLOTHING OPTIONAL LIVING, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO FOCUS ON AN EQUAL
EMPHASIS OF PHOTOGRAPHS ON CHILDREN, TEENAGERS AND ADULTS AT ALL
STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT AND IN VARIOUS POSES AND SETTINGS RATHER THAN
TIGHT MACRO SHOTS OF WOMEN ONLY. THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING OUTSIDE
IN A BEAUTIFUL AND COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE EMPHASIZED
AND ATTEMPTS NEED TO BE MADE IN THE JOURNALISM TO COMMUNICATE THE
INVIGORATING EXPERIENCE OF BEING OUTSIDE UNCLOTHED, SWIMING, WALKING,
ETC. THAT'S MY 2 CENTS ON THE SUBJECT.

Doesn't this raise all sorts of interesting questions vis a vis

    Re .2

I think that is a major point of CwS: Nudity is not pornography.

I don't view a small child or infant without cloths being portrayed
having a healthy good time as anything resembling pornographic.

But it is true - it could fall under the child pornography laws.

    RE: .3:

But one cannot tell the difference. Is a nude person posing in
position xxxx pornographic while a person posing in position yyyy is
OK? There are cases at either end of the spectrum that will be easy to
figure out. The middle 80% is hard.

I could say that a picture of two people having sex is portraying
them having a "healthy good time."

    jdr
10.5SSDEVO::YOUNGERCalm down, it's only 1's and 0'sTue Feb 16 1988 17:5139
    Re .4:

I agree with you pretty much.

However, in the case of child pornography, a child portrayed having
sex is *not* healthy nor a good time for the child. A child (for
example) building sandcastles on a beach in the nude is having a
    "healthy good time".

In the case of adults, I don't think that whether it is pornographic
or not is as much of a problem. Pornography involving consenting
adults is for the most part legal. Pornography involving children
    is not legal.

Pictures involving nude bodies and partly nude bodies has already
been shown to not be illegal. These things exist in medical textbooks,
which are obviously not pornographic. These things exist in other
self-help literature helping people (primarily women) discover how
their body works, and what is normal for it. This is not pornography
either. Many people no longer consider the nudes in Playboy to
be pornographic. Therefore, nudity by itself is not sufficient
    to be pornographic.

Most people would agree that a picture of two (or more) people having
sex is pornographic. Even if they are not completely undressed.

Thus, nudity is neither necessary nor sufficient for something to
be pornographic. There must be another definition of pornography.

The legal definition of pornography is something that is "without
redeeming social value". Thus, the medical textbooks and self-help
guides are obviously not pornography. Journals such as CWTS have
redeeming social value, so I would say are not pornographic, but
there may be those who disagree about it having redeeming social
value. There are many violent films such as _Texas Chainsaw Massacre_,
which have no redeeming social value (in my opinion), but are not
    classified as being pornographic.

_Clothed_with_the_Sun_ issue 7.4 (presumably Spring 88) has just come
    out. The contents include:

Trends (regular department) - Miscellaneous items of naturist interest.

Several viewpoints on the nudists who appeared (nude) on the Sally
Jesse Raphael television show to discuss nudism. Some feel that it was
a good opportunity to publicize nudism; others see it as
    sensationalized and exploitative.

An article on what the American Indians wore (or, more often, didn't
    wear).

Several articles on naturist gatherings, including the 1987 Western
and Eastern Naturist Gatherings (and why you want to attend the 1988
    gatherings) and the Rainbow Gathering.

Gay nudism - miscellaneous short articles, including a article on the
    1987 Gay Male Naturists gathering.

The 1987 International Naturist Meeting at Delegyhaza, Hungary, and an
extended discussion of the naturist facilities at Delegyhaza. (It
    sounds wonderful!)

The 1987 visit of the German Naturist Youths (FKK) to Canada, and the
scheduled exchange visit of North American nudist youths to Europe.

Miscellaneous other items, reviews, viewpoints, personal contributions,
    letters, etc.

I've just received _Clothed with the Sun_ issue 8.1. The contents
    include:

Trends (regular department) - Miscellaneous items of naturist interest.

    Growing Naturism:

Getting Started. Short articles on the founding of Northeast
Florida Naturists and the organization of Sandpipers Holiday Park
        in Texas.

Bare Backpacking in New Hampshire (Starting a SIG).

Progressive Nudism (Changes in the ESA). How the Eastern region of
the ASA has become more democratic and more "naturist" in the last
	few years.

Discard Old Attitudes and Build New Coalitions. Advocates
naturists building coalitions and getting involved with
        environmental and social advocacy groups.

The Origin of National Nude Weekend in 1976. What inspired the
original event which the Naturist Society grew out of, and how
	things are different today.

Photography Policy for Naturist Activities. There has been concern
about photographic exploitation in naturist circles recently,
particularly about the relationship between the photographer and the
subject, and about sale of "naturist" photos to pornographic
magazines. N.O.P.E. (Naturists Opposing Pornographic Exploitation)
has drawn up a set of proposed contract forms to regulate the relation
between the photographer and the subject (an alternative to the
standard model release form, giving equal ownership rights in the
photograph to the subject) and between the photographer and the
     naturist publisher.

Secret Hawaii. Very extensive site listings and other information
about naturism in Hawaii. (Also historical and political
     information.)

Body building. Introductory article on physical fitness and training.
Possibly the start of a series.

Cape Code Federal Court Decision Insults Justice. In 1975 the Cape
Code National Seashore imposed a special regulation banning nudity
(the only federal nudity ban anywhere in the country). Every time
someone has been cited and has tried to take the case to court, the
case has been dropped; so it has been impossible to get a court test
of the regulation. Therefore, The Naturist Society joined with a
group of individuals in filing a class action suit, Craft vs Hodel,
against the Interior Department, seeking an injunction against
enforcement of the ordinance. The District Court judge flatly
rejected the suit. This article appears to contain the entire text of
the decision, along with a lengthy commentary and refutation. Very
     long; very tedious.

Nudity in the Bible. Continuation of an ongoing exchange about
whether there are Biblical grounds for opposing nudity.

     Video, television, and book reviews.

"N" for Naturist,Naturism, etc; "O" for Optionists, Optionism, etc.?

In one of the recent issues of CWS mention was made of utilizing
the UPPER CASE "N" as the symbol of Naturism, Naturist, etc. That
    is a good idea.

But how about "O" to refer to those "Other", "Opionated",
"Obstreperous", "OPTIONISTS" who seem contentedly and constantly
complaining about "N" as if we somehow behave like they probably think
they would if they found themselves undressed on a beach! Actually,
they proably would be very surprised how well we (and they) really
    behave sans suits.

    Combinations:

    NO == No Optionists?

    ON == Only Naturists?

If ketchup is optional on a menu, I guess they might say "Ketchup
Optional." This seems to imply that going without Ketchup is the
norm. Obviously. Just as obvious "Clothing Optional" means that going
with out cloths is normal. I imagine the "O's" thought up the term
"Clothing Optional" because they disliked the alternatives. I have to
give them faint praise for the term, considering what it seems to
    actually mean.

_Clothed with the Sun_ will be changing its name with the next issue to
_*N* Nude & Natural_. [editorial comment: Yecch! -nf] (The new logo
is a large "N" with "NUDE &" printed within the top point and "NATURAL"
printed within the bottom point.) The theory is that "Clothed with the
Sun" is too obscure -- you don't get it unless you already know what it
means -- while "Nude & Natural" can be comprehended at a glance. [I
wonder if this means that they are finally planning to go to newsstand

cable channels in southern California after midnight ("Due to recent
FCC regulations is is now legal -- whether everywhere is uncertain, but

    midnight"); Sunnier Palms, a new member-owned park is southern Florida;

And all I have to look forward to is six months of cooler/cold/dark winter (or
what passes for winter here).

Aw, Peter.....

We sure are envious of you when we learn about your sunbathing at Christmas
time and New Years. ;-) Our daffodils and crocus are up. Our neighbor has
tulips blooming. The weather isn't warm enough for sunbathing. Last week
we were in Utah and it was t-shirt, flannel shirt and many layers type
weather for us. All I got tanned was my face and backs of my hands. :-(
