9.0. "The World Guide to Nude Beaches and Recreation" by MOIRA::FAIMAN (Ontology Recapitulates Philology) Thu Jan 28 1988 23:49

The first reference in every naturist's library ought to be _The_
    _World_Guide_to_Nude_Beaches_and_Recreation_, by Lee Baxandall.
This is as close as you will come to a definitive guide to nude
beaches and other clothing-optional recreation sites throughout
the US and the rest of the world. (The guide is about 1/2 US,
1/2 the rest of the world.) It is profusely illustrated with
    magnificent (and appropriate) photographs.

Unfortunately, the World Guide is five years old now (it was
published in 1983), and consequently its listings aren't very
reliable any more. Either the legal status or the acceptance
of the sites listed may have changed drastically since it was
published. At this point, you can treat it as a useful source
of places to go looking for nude recreation opportunities, but
don't assume that it's safe to take your clothes off somewhere
just because you read about it in the WG.

For more up-to-date information, your best bet is to subscribe
to _Clothed_With_the_Sun_, the quarterly magazine published by
The Naturists. (A later note will provide information on The
Naturists and CwS.) Each year's spring issue contains incremental
updates to the North American part of the WG; other issues contain
updates to other sections. Thus, with a WG plus the last five
spring issues of CwS, you'll be relatively up-to-date.

Now for the bad news... The WG used to be available in many
bookstores, even some of the "mall" ones (Walden Books, I think),
but I have heard that it is now out of print. The good news,
though, is that it is out of print because there is a new edition
in preparation, so maybe you won't need all those CwS back issues
    after all.

The latest issue of _Nude & Natural_, 9.3, reports that the publisher of
the original _World Guide_ has decided that they will *not* be publishing
the new WG -- too "risky". Therefore, The Naturist Society will be
publishing it themselves, which means yet another delay.

The same issue includes a mail-in site report form for making updates.

To expand a bit on Neil, the original publisher was bought out by

                            WORLD GUIDE TO
                      NUDE BEACHES AND RECREATION
                         PART 1: UNITED STATES

This is an update to some of the information in Lee Baxandall's
excellent book, "World Guide to Nude Beaches and Recreation", Harmony
Books, 1981. I've confined my comments to places I've actually visited
or tried to, and would like this update information to contribute to a
new "World Guide" if one ever comes out. The page numbers refer to
where the recreation location appears in the book, and the year included
in each description is when I personally last visited the site.

My main criticism of the book is in the lack or inadequacy of directions
to the places. Jayson Loam says it best in his excellent guides "Hot
Springs and Pools of the North/South West" (Wilderness Press, 1985 &
1986): Getting There is Everything. The "World Guide" could take some
clues from the detail he gives in his maps and directions. There are
also some place names that are misspelled, or in casual use and
therefore do not appear even on detailed local maps. I would prefer a
trade-off in favor of detailed maps to each site, and fewer "soul-
stirring" photographs, and more captions identifying the location of the
photos. But this criticism in no way detracts from the importance of
this book in finding outlets for the traveling naturist. The next
"World Guide" should be better than ever.

Unless specifically noted, the following areas are not established for
social nudity. Most are deserted areas where you can participate
naturally if you are discreet.

Page 29
Reservations for California State Parks are now (1989) made through
MISTIX at (800) 444-7275, and no longer through Ticketron. There is a
$3.75 fee for each reservation they make or cancel.

Page 30
BLACK'S BEACH: (1980) One of the few places that I've visited where
social nude use is established. Directions as given are OK. Plenty of
people enjoying the sun, but a few telephotoists on top of the cliff.
The photographers were getting much more worked up than the mellow
beachgoers.

Page 34
BIG CALIENTE HOT SPRINGS: The road doubles back at Juncal campground,
not Jimcal. Big Caliente can reach 115 degrees, which for me is
uncomfortably hot. The valve to control the water temperature merely
controls the rate of new spring water into the pool. When a pool to
hold 25 is too hot, it stays too hot for a long time. But there is
another valve that allows the water to spray up into the air, cool off,
and shower you. Recommended! We were there on the July 4 weekend
(1989) around dusk, and there was one other textiled group there
already. When they left, we had the place to ourselves. There is a
tiny creek nearby for cooling off, if you're there during the day. The
nearest campground is near the Pendola ranger station, about 3
miles.away. This is desert. It gets hot, and no drinking water is
provided at any of the campgrounds, so bring your own.

LITTLE CALIENTE HOT SPRINGS: The locked gate is now (1989) just past the
hot tub at the ridge where you say to leave the road. So you can drive
right to the spring. The trail from the parking area begins with wood-
retained steps to the right. Don't be fooled by many other trails
heading off in other directions. The spring is a bit hot (107 degrees)
for daytime soaking. But right behind Mono campground is a seasonal
runoff reservoir for cool dipping. Save the spring for the evening. It
holds up to 6 close friends. Again, there is no drinking water here or
at the campground, so bring your own.

Page 35
LAS CRUCES HOT SPRINGS: The trail goes *up*. Don't be fooled by jeep
trails to either the left or the right. And it's no mile to the spring.
Even with carrying a one-year-old, and with a three-year-old walking
along beside, it only took 12 minutes. Maybe it just seems like a mile
from how steep it is. The main pool is only 2 feet deep, with a mud-
mud-muddy bottom and cloudy water. The upper grotto is not any 103
degrees, but closer to 94. Its bottom has a lot of sharp rocks.

MORE MESA: Directions OK, and description still valid (1989). Nice
spot, but cold water. Established for social nude use; people start
really showing up just after noon, with a two to one ratio of men to
women. Take your bike to the eucalyptus trees, or even 4-wheel. Most
people walk.

Page 37
All beaches in Santa Cruz County, north of the city limits, allow
discreet nude recreation. But they are typically cold and windy.
Litter is a real problem here, especially after July 4. Please bring an
extra garbage bag, and help clean up after the slobs.

BONNY DOON BEACH: This beach is where Bonny Doon Road meets the coast
Route 1. The hole-in-the-wall is now (1986) gone. Or rather, the whole
wall is gone. This makes the two pieces of beach one large area now,
but with less protection from the wind. Still plenty of beachgoers.
This is Santa Cruz's most popular social nude beach. Winter waves can
wash all the sand away, leaving the surf crashing on rocks, where there
once was a beach. It always comes back in the summer, though.

FOUR MILE BEACH: (1985) This is mostly a textiled hangout. I've only
seen 2 nude people (both men) ever on this beach. But it is big, so
feel free to liberate the south end.

PANTHER BEACH: (1989) The nude area is through the sea arch to the next
beach to the left. Again, very low nude usage and a lot of fully
clothed visitors. This beach is probably the closest to the road of any
of them, so its access trail is the steepest.

Page 38
BAKER'S BEACH: (1987) This is strictly a gay scene with open sexplay.
Not my favorite. It's a lot easier to reach from the west side of the
beach, away from the Golden Gate Bridge. There's a good size parking
lot for the large textiled crowd that uses it. Back east, toward the
bridge, is the nude end. But don't expect privacy or women.

You can add a spa or resort to the list. LUPIN NATURIST CLUB, P.O. Box
1274, Los Gatos, CA. Phone (408) 353-2250. This private club is 53
years old. Be sure to phone first, as they sustained some heavy damage
in the big earthquake, did not reopen until late 1989. The outdoor pool
cracked open, and the clubhouse, restaurant, and several residences
slipped off their foundations.

Page 42
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK: The cliff above the Ahwanee Hotel really does
work as a giant natural solar panel. The tiny pool (room for 2) where
the flow collects is surprisingly comfortable, for anyone who has
ventured into any other mountain stream. There is plenty of space on
the surrounding rock ledge for sunning and enjoying the view.

Page 46
CONUNDRUM HOT SPRINGS holds particularly warm memories for me. Here was
my first exposure to social nudity, and I've been hooked ever since.
The mortar-and-stone main pool has held 25, but 6 is more like it. The
water is piped down from a shallow pool for one or two that is a touch
warmer than the main pool, around 100. Watch out for sunburn! There is
serious UV at 11,200 feet. There is a tiny sign with the number of the
forest service road (128) as you leave Castle Creek toward Conundrum. I
was last there in 1980, so your description is valid. The well-marked
trail leads for eight steep miles past century-old mining cabin ruins
and present-day avalanche courses to an old hut, which marks the closest
you can camp to the springs. The trail then leads farther up the valley
and crosses the stream just before the tub. Another nice route is to
park at the East Maroon Creek trailhead, almost to Maroon Lake on the
Maroon Creek road. Follow East Maroon Creek to the end, bearing left,
and cross both Triangle and Copper Passes, and then drop 1 mile down to
the springs. This makes for a loop trip that lets you see twice as much
of the Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness. The shortest but steepest path is
from Gothic, hiking up to Copper lake, then turning up and right over
Copper Pass. In the early 70's Copper Lake was a fine destination for
4-wheelers, but now the Wilderness boundary extends almost to Gothic.

Page 57
GRAY SAND BEACH: Although a half mile hike on a steep trail from where
you must leave the car, there is still a surprising amount of visitor
traffic, all textiled. When most of them had left, we liberated the
beach (1978). It's excellent, but not exactly a nude beach.

DIAMOND HEAD BEACH: Forget it. All textiled. Not much of a beach
anyway.

MOKU'AUIA ISLAND has 12 acres and a nice beach that faces the mainland.
Nowadays (1989) entry is prohibited during the nesting season. But
Malaekahana State Park has gotten steadily more developed
over the past few years, and correspondingly more crowded. Clothes
compulsory, of course. Since everyone on the crowded Malaekahana beach
can see the beach on the islet, the days of its casual nude use may be
over. We'll see what happens with Little Makena Beach, but I'm not
optimistic.

Here's a new one for you on O'ahu: MANOA FALLS. Take TheBus to Paradise
Park at the head of Manoa valley. Don't go in the park, but keep
walking up the road. In a quarter mile the road stops and a well-marked
trail leads a mile up to the plunge pool at the base of the gentle fall.
Casual nude use due to light visitation, but not yet established.
You'll have to liberate it each time. I do.

Page 60
HANAKAPI'AI BEACH: I first went here in 1978, but by 1988 the Na Pali
traffic has gotten so heavy that the area is now completely textiled.
The surf and riptides make this beach extremely dangerous. Several
people have lost their lives swimming here. Visitation is now so heavy
that even the side trip to Hanakapi'ai fall is clothes compulsory,
unless you are into heavy exhibitionistic liberating. Incidentally, the
beach is a very long 2 miles from the trailhead, and the fall an even
longer 2 miles from the beach. I haven't been on down to Kalalau (note
spelling: not Kalalua), but I've heard that nude use continues there.

WAIMEA CANYON: These directions are baloney. The parking area just
inside the park for the Kukui trail is some 12 miles inland. Needless
to say, I was unable to find this site (1988) to comment.

POLIHALE STATE PARK: These directions are fine. You can camp at the
north end of the beach. The southward expanse of this huge beach is not
established as nude, it's just so huge that you won't meet anybody,
ever. This place is hot, and there is no water (or any facilities, for
that matter) away from the campground (1988).

MAKENA BEACH: These directions are fine. Little Makena is a terrific
beach with lots of social nude use (1983). It also has the most
balanced male to female ratio of anywhere I've been, outside of Europe.
This beach is now (1989) the focus of a statewide battle over the legal
status of the nude use. The Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural
Resources is expected to issue a destructive decree any day now, and ban
nudity on all State beaches. Which in Hawai'i is all beaches. Big
Makena beach is the site of a future megaresort: I'll bet the developers
have a stake in throwing the skins out, too. They really should see the
money being made in Yugoslavia at nude resorts!

SEVEN SACRED POOLS: The name is pure turn-of-the-century tourist hype.
These pools were never sacred to the indigenous Hawaiians, nor are there
even seven of them! Fortunately there are even more. These directions
are fine. There are plenty of pools to go around. They are large and
they are deep. Plenty of opportunity for nude high diving. Lots of
water is flowing in the waterfalls that join the pools. But again, nude
use is not established, so you have to be discreet.

Page 104
You left out LAKE POWELL. I know, I know, it runs against my ecological
grain, too. But rent a houseboat for a week or bring your own. There
are 90 major side canyons to explore, all filled with 80 degree water in
August. Surely you can find some hollow to liberate! Or skinny-hike up
the dry side creeks and sun on the rocks. As on other Federal property,
if the nudity is discreet, it's legitimate.

Page 108
OLYMPIC HOT SPRINGS: I went up there (1985) on the spur of the moment,
and sure enough, the road is blocked 2 miles from the spring. It was
too late in the day to walk up there. But I expect closing the road
has cut down on the trash. I'll try again sometime.

                            WORLD GUIDE TO
                      NUDE BEACHES AND RECREATION
                            PART 2: EUROPE

This is an update to some of the information in Lee Baxandall's
excellent book, "World Guide to Nude Beaches and Recreation", Harmony
Books, 1981. I've confined my comments to places I've actually visited
or tried to, and would like this update information to contribute to a

where the recreation location appears in the book, and the year included

My main criticism of the book is in the lack or inadequacy of directions
to the places. Jayson Loam says it best in his excellent guides "Hot

1986): Getting There is Everything. The "World Guide" could take some

"World Guide" should be better than ever.

                                EUROPE

Our trip to all these spots was in 1982, so even my information is out
of date now. But it will at least serve as a sanity check on the book's
information. Unless specifically noted, the following areas are all
established for social nudity. Unlike in the Unites States, social
nudity in Europe is a collective activity with its own allocated areas,
and a good balance between the sexes. Either there is a crowded nude
resort or beach, or it is a textiled area. There doesn't seem to be the
empty-wilderness style of naturism as in the U.S.

Page 145
On SJAELLAND ISLAND (July), we tried to find the nude beach in the
Troldeskoven Forest near Tisvilde, but none of the place names mentioned
on the book were to be found, either on our map or on street signs. We
ate our lunch in the dunes with our coats on as the wind whistled by.
Any nudist would have been insane. Well, we found one walking around
the parking lot as we were leaving. Another insanity case was actually
in the water. This place is freezing!

Page 151
We visited LACANAU OCEAN in May. There was no need to ask directions
for the Route Allemaigne, even though it wasn't marked as such; we just
followed the road south from town staying near the shore. The old
German bunkers marked the spot. The bunkers have slid down the dunes
over the years, and lately have been painted bright colors with
graphics. One still had a rusting machine gun inside. It seems as
though the whole southwest of France is one giant beach. You can walk
for miles here. In May, the water was still too cool to enjoy; I'm not
sure if it warms up by August. Except for a couple of other families
enjoying that expanse in the nude, we were the only visitors on that
Friday.

Page 152
PORT LEUCATE has a billboard at the edge of town publicizing nude
recreation, but we couldn't find either Aphrodite Village or Ulysses.
There are miles of beach and the weather is still miserable at the end
of May. Maybe that's why there was nobody around to ask directions from
or why all the restaurants in town were closed. We spent the day at the
beach unliberated.

Page 155
Naturism in France can be big business as evidenced at LE CAP D'AGDE.
Directions aren't needed since there are exit signs off the highway.
I'm not into such grand resorts as this, so we only reconnoitered the
area , ate dinner at their restaurant, and left. The few naturists we
saw were only out at the beach and pool; everywhere else they were
clothed. In other respects this resort looks like any other at Miami or
Waikiki. May was probably too early for the best beach weather.

The writeup in the book for LES CALANQUES was mouth watering. But the
directions to get there were garbage. I got to the University all
right, but couldn't find anyone who knew where they were. I started
walking toward the sea from the back side of the University anyway, but
when I reached the top of the first mountain ridge, I could see several
more ridges stretching out for miles into the distance before reaching
the water. I would still like to go there sometime. Could someone
provide better directions, or maybe a map?

Page 159
UNI-SEE is actually called Stadtsee on the maps. Once I got the name
translated, it was a snap to find. But I had to do a lot of asking
before I got the name right. This place is a terrific find. The lake
is warm in July, and the nude crowds on the east (not southeast) even
have a volleyball court set up. The rest of the lake is topless.

Page 167
CORFU: I checked out the north end of Corfu on a Thursday in June, and
found it lightly populated, but by clothed natives. We discreetly
liberated a section of the beach as far as we could get from the others,
but this area is definitely not established.

Similarly, the southern coast of the PELOPONNESE has a few isolated
strands for discreet dipping, but nothing established.

Page 172
We went out to the beautiful island of CAPRI in June Breathtakingly
clear water, plenty of toplessness, but no nudity.

OSTUNI BEACH near Brindisi is similarly not established, but you can
walk away from the larger crowds to skinnydip. But long distance
beachwalking is popular among the clothed set, too, so don't count on
complete privacy. The pollution you mention results in thick seaweed
growth on all the rocks. Maybe I didn't actually find the actual nude
beach described in the book, since it gave no directions at all.

Page 173
CALLANTSOOG: Not only is this beach established, it is crowded. We
went in at St. Maartenzee, and walked over. This time the directions
were fine. The only facilities are in the textiled section. I actually
went swimming in the North Sea. But pollution strikes here, too. Our
legs developed a rash afterwards, even though we showered off. This
doesn't seem to faze the hundreds of determined Dutch naturists.

Page 178
OQUES BEACH: This is a possibility, but it was so cold that absolutely
nobody else was there (May). This place wasn't that easy to find,
either.

The beaches at PENISCOLA were textiled as far as you could see in both
directions from town. Could it be that some directions were missing
from this description, too?

Page 190
The Adriatic coast of Yugoslavia really is a spectacular nudist
attraction. Every resort, it seemed, had a naturist section or was
entirely devoted to naturism. I couldn't find some of the areas that
were mentioned in the book, but there were so many other nude
campgrounds and resorts that it didn't matter. The places were all so
crowded that it seemed like the world was aching to get naked, and
willing to pay to do it.

Page 192
KOVERSADA is gigantic. Beaches, sailing, tennis, windsurfing, miniature
golf, all nude. The "beach" was unpleasantly sharp limestone, but the
heavenly bodies out enjoying it anyway made up for it.

Page 194
PAG ISLAND: The combination of the book's directions and my map made it
very difficult to find anything on Pag. But I eventually did: the sandy
beach at the start of the Luna Peninsula was completely textiled. Heavy
use, but no nude use at all. Once I found the Strasko nude campground,
I was impressed with the size. They don't have much fresh water on Pag,
so they turn off the supply to the showers almost all the time. The
snack bar was cheap and terrific. As at Koversada, the "beach" was
unpleasantly sharp limestone, but the heavenly bodies out enjoying it
anyway made up for it.

DALMATIAN COAST: Between Zadar and Dubrovnik are many naturist hotels.
Nearly all of them restrict access to their beaches to paying overnight
guests. We did visit one of the hotels, but I forget the location.
Rats. It had an older clientele than the campgrounds, but still plenty
of people enjoying the beach, volleyball, and hotel bar naturally.
German is the only second language we found.

Page 195
I couldn't find the town of Igalo on the GULF OF KOTOR, even though we
drove all the way around it.

We didn't go down to Ulcinj, but between there and Budva is the charming
fishing village of SVETI STEFAN, which is perched like a bird on a rock
in the Adriatic. The entire village is now a museum-hotel. But
immediately to the south is an FKK campground with a view of Sveti
Stefan, a clean pebbly beach, and a substantially younger crowd. Only
"FKK" appears on the sign on the road.

There is a new publication put out by the American Sunbathing
Association. This new book is a revamped version of their ASA Park
Guide, entitled "North American Guide to Nude Recreation".

The new book is 8 1/2 x 11 and in full color (with lots of pictures).
Each ASA site/campground/resort has it's own description with pictures
from that location. Maps to the different places are grouped together
at the back. For those of you in North America, it's a pretty decent
substitute for the missing new edition of the World Guide, though I was
wondering why Moonstone was missing from the list of nude beaches in
    the back.

The new book is $18.95 (list). I saw them being sold at Solair.

I spoke today to people from The Naturist Society, and specifically to the
woman who is doing the most of the writing for the new edition.

Expect publication before Christmas (finally)!

If anyone has commentary they would like to pass on (errors, corrections,
ommissions) mail them to be NO LATER THAN AUGUST 31 and I will pass them on.
Beyond that date, we exceed their deadlines....

Ok, I was expecting publication before Christmas. It is now December
27th and you've got me ticked off :-) because nobody gave me a copy.

Any word on a publication date?

I talked with the folks at the Naturist Society. They've been delayed, of
course. Problems: the publisher won't distribute it, so for the most part,
bookstores aren't going to carry it because they can't get it. If this annoys
you, you might harp on the bookstores, so they can push back. I don't know
who the publisher is though... Additionally, the foreign contributions are
slowing them down - some are proving difficult to get translated.

The Naturist Society will be distributing it themselves. Initial printing will
be about 50,000. The cover photo will be the same as the previous edition.
They had a new photo, but elected to use the old one for recognition value
since they've lost distribution channels.

Publication is sincerely intended by spring, as that's the start of "the season"
and they really don't want to miss the sales. It will be advertised in their
magazine, so we'll get plenty of advance notice and ordering information.

Someone I know said that he called and The Naturist Society told him that
the World Guide is due to be released this July (at $21.95 each), and that
if you order ahead of time, it'll be $19.95.

I suspect that there'll be an order form in the next issue of N&N.

I guess so.

Word at the Gathering was July 4 (I guess that sounds snappier than July 1).

I'll let you know when it arrives....

This is from usenet:
"...Look for an August release date now.

NCN will be able to take orders for The Guide as well,
and if possible, at a slight discount. When we work out
the details I'll post to the net.

By The Way, The Guide Was Originally To Be Distributed
Via A Major National Publishing House, But They Chickened
Out In Fear Of Ed Meese's Poorly-named 'Child Pornography'
Report And Law. now, Lee and company will distribute the
thing themselves, but with far less exposure to retail
and mail order outlets than they would have had before.

9.21Still no World Guide :-(NOVA::WASSERMANDeb Wasserman, DTN 264-1863Thu Aug 15 1991 13:066
Has anyone gotten their new World Guide yet? We sent our money to the
Naturist Society, along with an order for the new ASA Park Guide
(which, BTW, is completely revised and filled with beautiful photos).
The ASA Guide showed up the other day, but alas, no World Guide. TNS
says it's not ready yet. Uh-oh... how long do you think it will be now

Received my copy yesterday. Didn't get a chance to look at every page

same. Did see a lot of nice photos though.

    Well... every body must be off reading their new guides;
    it's too quiet in here.

What's the verdict? Is it bigger or smaller than the old one?
Have the listings changed a lot?

    Should I buy a copy?

One small error I noticed in the new World Guide. In the directions
to Lake Wood (aka as Wood Lake) the guide says go 7 miles after
you turn onto the road at the gas station and then look for the
park entrance. Well 7 tenths is more like it. I never measured
the distance but at a max it's 1 mile. I ride it on my bike.

Also left out was the directions to the north end of the Cape
canaveral National Seashore through New Smyrna Beach. The new edition
talks about Playalinda (down near Titusville) but neglects to mention
    New Smyrna.
