2548.0. "United Buyers Service??" by MSE1::MASTRANGELO () Wed Feb 05 1997 20:37

    Has anyone heard of United Buyer's Service? Is anyone a member here in
    Massachusetts?

    They are supposed to bne able to get merchandise for 10 - 15% lower
    than departmemnt store sale prices. They are also supposedly capable
    of getting great deals on furniture.

    Does anyone know of any members who have experienced these great
    savings?

    	Well, USPE was basically "trinket" merchandise. They really didn't
    	have much in the way of big-ticket items [furniture, electronics].

    If this is the buying service I am thinking of, local consumer
    advocate Clark Howard highly recommends *against* this wholesale
    buyer club. Upfront cost of $1000+, having to buy from a catalog
    (no showroom floor) and price discounts not as originally stated
    were cited as reasons for discouraging consumers from using this
    service.

    Wholesale clubs like Sams and Costco were said to be competitve and
    provide more safety in buying high-ticket items.
