| Informix' strategy for a comprehensive backup and restore solution is
to provide an industry standard interface api, recruit numerous product
partners in that space, and let customers decide. They are delivering
a utility called ONBAR in recent and future database engine products
(on Digital UNIX, ONBAR was in the recent ODS 7.22 release, and will
be in the forthcoming XPS 8.11 release.)
ONBAR uses SQL to get data from the engine, and passes it on to any
of several Storage Management Vendor (SMV) products using the X/Open
Backup Services API (XBSA). So far, at least eight SMVs are working
with XBSA to support Informix ONBAR on various platforms. We are working
with several of these vendors to try to get them onto Digital UNIX.
Several have products on Digital UNIX already- we're trying to ascertain
and encourage their product plans for XBSA on Digital UNIX.
Digital has a source license agreement with Legato, by which the
Networker product is ported to Digital UNIX by Digital and delivered
as NSR. The team which does this work does have plans to support
Legato's Business Module for Informix (I think that's what the
Networker XBSA module is called) eventually, I believe in Q1FY98.
The original question in the basenote referred to ODS 7.12, which
predates ONBAR. ODS 7.12 does have ontape and onarchive utilities
with which to manage some backup storage approaches, but these don't
really address the requirements for interface functionality with SMV
products as ONBAR does.
