422.0. "Rx for CATS!" by ERLANG::FALLON (Karen Fallon "Moonsta Cattery") Wed Oct 21 1992 12:51

Not that we ALL are unaware of this phenomenon, but, in the November
issue of Better Homes and Gardens cats are cures!

    from page 230:

"When no other miracle drug seems to work, Dr. Bob Hannelly advises
patients who are suffering from stress and depression that perhaps they
ought to just try adopting a cat."

golly, I would NEVER have thought of that myself!!!
Karen, who is always kissing a kitty, so I must never get depressed!

Last January we adopted two neglected cats and I can honestly say that
they were such an uplift to a cold, depressing winter!! Maybe it's
time to look for another pair of bookitties since snow will be coming
to New England soon.... I'm a firm believer that cats are good
therapy. So is a trip to Hawaii! :^)
422.2Definite stress release with catsADNERB::MAHONThu Oct 22 1992 15:325
Cats are excellent therapy. What they can do never ceases to amaze me.
They are always there when you want them, never talk back, and don't
require much work to fix dinner for!

I currently have 6 kitty-therapists. And yes, they definitely help
    me...

One hug from any one of my babies makes me feel 100% better.

I'm finding kitty therapy from 3 cats to be a major source of
    comfort right now.

After separating from my husband, the cats have been life support for
me. They were so bothered by the tension when we were living in the
house with Dana that their personalities increased dramatically once I
moved them into the apartment with me. They are there for me always
and are much more loving and affectionate. I usually wake up pinned to
the bed by 32 pounds of furballs!

Yesterday, I had one of the worst days I've ever had at DEC. I had a
MAJOR presentation that I worked on all day on Tuesday for a 1:00
meeting yesterday. The systems crashed Wednesday morning and they lost
ALL of the work I had done on Tuesday!! Ugh!!

I came home and found my dear Kyra waiting for me in the kitchen. I
picked her up and just cuddled her and petted her .. Shortly afterward,
Tabitha joined us and we had a "cuddling session". Was absolutely the
    best therapy I could have!!

I feel very foolish for asking this question! I used to know what
DILLIGAF stood for but am stumped to figure it out now.

Is it printable in long form in a public forum?

    I love it!

Nippa always sems to sense when I need some luv'ins. She's not a very
affectionate cat, but she always seems to know and will snuggle and
    cuddle with me.

... I loose my fiance to the wonderful (cough, cough) exciting,
(cough, cough, cough) game of Football! )-:

But Friday, he definitely gave me the hugs I needed too. But he just
isn't as soft, cuddly, and warm as the furrfaces! (-:

As I go through my recovery from losing Bailey I've noticed the
remaining cats are sort of clinging to me. This weekend I've
noticed that Amelia has picked up some of Bailey's little mannerisms.
It's very strange. Bailey was the only cat that used the little
blue furry cat bed or the big light blue bed I made.

Since Friday night, every time I turn around Amelia is in the big
cat bed purring and needing or even just lounging. She's given up
her favorite chair for it. When I moved her and the big bed into
the bedroom one night and forgot to move the bed back later, I
found all 14.6 pounds of her stuffed into the little blue bed the
    next day.

I believe she is really missing Bailey and that she smells Bailey's
sent on the beds. Either that or a piece of Bailey's spirit has
    been shared with Amelia.

Interesting concept - a bit of Bailey's spirit now in Amelia - as I
was going to enter a topic about this very subject.

One cat we had ... made it a habit to "chew at my hair" when I
wouldn't get up in the morning. Not long after he left us, Otis
began doing this ... not all the time, but every once in awhile.
And, I notice from time to time that Tiffany looks at me the
way Benji (our Siamese) did when he was lonely or confused. She
is - by all standards - a mutt but atleast once a twice a week
will talk incessently - just like Benji did. Siamese cats are
    well known for speaking out!@

I've often wondered if my departed cats are reincarnated in the
new ones ... which would explain going to a shelter and seeing
ONE cat out of a hundred look at you straight in the eye and you
KNOW you have to take him/her home.

I personally believe in life after death so why the same for a
feline? Hasn't that theory been investigated - going back to
    Egyptian times?

A friend of mine lost her cat to kidney disease a couple of years ago.
Casey was a very unique looking black and white cat. Last week a
Casey look alike showed up on her doorstep and has taken over
the household and is totally mellow with everyone, even the 5 year old.
So far no one has responded to the lost posters or ads.

(And although the 5 year old has severe allergies, which is why they
didn't get a new cat after Casey's death, he doesn't seem to be bothered at
    all by the new cat.)

re .6, .12 My kitties have always known when sympathy is needed, too--
I think that's why it's been said that cats read auras (well,
that's why I believe they do). My daughter has always been a little
miffed that Moon prefers my lap to hers, even though she knows that
    3) Moon antedates her, and 2) my lap is *way* bigger and softer. But
on Tuesday when Alex was home with sore throat, cough and low-grade
fever, Moon was stuck to her like glue; she knew that her warm furry
    services were needed! ]:3
