22.0. "CAT SHOW CHATTER" by MUTTON::BROWN () Tue Nov 19 1991 17:07

This topic is for discussing cat shows: i.e. who is going, how to get
there, which cats you are taking, who needs a ride, etc. We decided to
put in a cat show chatter topic to keep our cat show announcement topic
    clean.

This topic will be keyworded CAT_SHOWS.

Could someone publish directions to the Andover show this
weekend? I won't be there...but Priscilla will be there and
    she needs directions.

Good luck to all the kitty stars!!

22.2show rule requires directions be given in CFAMUTTON::BROWNThu Dec 05 1991 15:2711
    Sandy,

Here's a tip for Priscilla. If the show she is going to is CFA, they
are required by a show rule to provide directions now. She should
check her show flyer, or contact the entry clerk. Most clubs will send
directions on the confirmation, but since Priscilla probably doesn't
enter her cats in the shows, she may have to either get the info from
the entry clerk or the vendor contact person (that is if no one here
    can post directions). :^)

Thanks for the tip...we're so new at show going...and each Organization
has different rules...we haven't figured out who does what/when!!
In some cases we have recieved written confirmation/directions with
specific rules as to what we can bring and other cases we have only
received a verbal "you can come".

This show in particular asked us not to bring shelter cats...but asked
us to bring baked goods to sell!! So if you are in Andover...stop by
and see are craft table, say hello to Priscilla and come smell all
our delicious home made bake goods. All volunteers turned into bakers
    this week!!

Good luck to all the kitties going!

Eleanor,

There will be a cat show in Mansfield Mass in late January. That's the next
CFF show in the immediate area. I believe that it's the 18th and 19th. Watch
here for further information.

    Karen,

This is a small local show so the Cat House Originals folks probably
won't be there this time. We do have them booked for the San Francisco
Reveler's show in March though. (we are moving from the Cow Palace to
the San Mateo Expo Center due to the San Jose Sharks hockey team being
at the Cow Palace this year).

Too bad Artie hasn't gotten out to the West Coast yet. He was INVITED
to be the only cat tree vendor at a show in Maryland this past
weekend. I just can't say enough about his trees. I honestly believe
they are superior to Cat House Originals. Might be worth the shipping
to get one out to the West Coast.

22.10If you know something I don't know, please tell...PROSE::GOGOLINTue Dec 10 1991 08:2223
Why do you think the Cat House trees are superior, Nancy? I'm curious.
I have been to shows where both vendors had trees on display and, while
they are obviously different, the quality looked the same to me. The main
difference seemed to be that the Cat House tree perches are supported by
real tree limbs where Artie's (I forget his business's name) tree perches
are supported by posts covered with sisal rope.

I bought my first cat tree, a C.H. model, 3 years ago second hand from a
Feline ad. It's probably 6 years old now and still holding up well except
the perches need to be recovered (well, it IS used by 8 cats). I got a
second cat tree last year at one of the shows. Before I made my decision
I went back and forth between the two vendors' displays several times.
I finally decided on the C.H. tree because I liked the arrangement of the
perches better than on any of the trees Artie had there. Last winter I
bought a one-perch-on-a-sisal-post "tree" from Artie and I've been happy
    with that, too.

Another of Artie's products that has been a big hit at my house is a
    sisal-covered cylinder attached to a (roughly) 1' x 2' carpet-covered,
heavy board. You can use it lying flat or upright, propped up against
something. The cats love to use it and it only cost $20.

22.11Arubacat treesWMOIS::GERDE_JTue Dec 10 1991 09:3419
I think Nancy said she felt Artie's ARUBACATS trees were superior to
    those of Cat House.

When I bought a tree I studied those of three different
manufacturers...but felt Arubacats trees were superior. I spent about
an hour talking with Artie about his design and materials. He's an
engineer, and spent many years developing his trees before he began
selling them. His trees are designed, from the ground up, with the
cats safety and needs in mind -- they're sturdy, no glue, no staples or
    nails on the rope.

Artie's craftsmanship shows...finishing touches are neat, materials are
safe and sturdy, designs are tested by his cats. In comparison with
the other manufacturers, I felt I was getting more for my money. Also,
although this was not a priority consideration, even at 5'6" tall, the
tree looks good in the living room.

22.12JUPITR::KAGNOKitties with an AttitudeTue Dec 10 1991 09:4818
I have a C.H. Original tree but it wasn't purchased directly from the
vendor. I bought it brand new from a friend who's cats weren't using
it and she let me pay her in monthly installments.

It is large, over 6' tall, but really doesn't get much use from the
cats. The only perch used is the very top one and sometimes we'll find
a cat or two in the house portion. They do scratch the bark and the
    carpet covering though.

While I don't own an Arubacat tree, my husband made a similar type with
sisal rope and one long perch. This tree is beat to death!! Since I
can't convince hubby to build another one, I plan to purchase one of
Artie's trees at the next local cat show.

My choice for Artie's tree is based strictly on cost (they are priced
less than C.H. from my last observation) and the fact that he uses
    sisal rope instead of bark.

22.13Looking forward to the next one...CPCOD::SULLIVANTue Dec 10 1991 11:555
Thanks, Holly, I'll be on the look out for it.
I just went to my first cat show this fall

I have a CH tree for my cats, and they love it and use it all the time.
The top open perch and the top "house" and the middle perch get slept
in, and the bottom "house" gets used as a refuge from the dreaded
vacuum cleaner. They also use the tree limbs as scratching posts. They
have zero interest in sisal scratching posts.

The whole thing is extremely sturdy and well made. I was particularly
concerned about checking for stability, since this is earthquake
    country.

Since the last reply mentions 'cat trees' I'll post my
note here. While Christmas shopping this weekend, my hubby
and I went to the Newington Mall (not Fox Run) in Newington
NH. A woman had a cart set up in the middle of the mall with
all kinds of cat stuff. And some of the biggest cat trees
I've seen! The largest one stood about 5 feet tall and about
3" around, with lots of perches and a ramp. It sold for $300
and could hold 24 cats at one time! She had some smaller ones
too but even those were out of our price range. They were
fantastic looking though and I could see Audrey having an
absolute field day with one of them..... =)

    	JJ

22.16COASTL::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313Wed Dec 11 1991 07:3720
I have heard that the posts that are just logs - like the CH Originals
    - are very messy when the cats scratch them. The Sisel rope holds up
very very well for many years and my cats LOVE them.

As a previous noter pointed out, Artie is VERY concerned with the
cat's safety. He does NOT used "continuous loop carpet" in his
trees. Other vendors do but I'm not sure which ones. Artie knows.
Continuous loop carpet is the type of carpet that is made from one
long piece of "yarn" so that if the cat pulls out any of the loops
it can end up pulling off a nice long piece of string like material
that, if swallowed, can cause serious damage. The loops in the
carpetting that Artie uses are all separate little pieces of
yarn so that if pulled out and eaten there is no chance they can
do any damage to the cat.

I just know that I have 5 of Artie's trees and they all look great
after years of continuous use AND they cost less than other trees.
Also, Artie stands behind his work.
      Nancy DC

22.17TENAYA::KOLLINGKaren/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca.Wed Dec 11 1991 13:079
I do have to vac around the CH logs, but it isn't a big deal. Now I'm
wondering about some of the generic smaller cat platforms I have,
because I've noticed that they shred long pieces of 'yarn' and I keep
after that because of a concern about it being swallowed -- does
Arubacats have a catalog that smaller platforms can be ordered from?
Maybe I should just dump the little ones I have. (The cats don't seem
to scratch the CH carpet at all, guess the log parts are more
    attractive.)

22.18COASTL::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313Tue Dec 17 1991 07:0424

Yes, at the Marriot Hotel in Copley place February 22nd and 23rd.

This is a very classy show with an incredible gate!! It gets
jam-packed quickly so arrive early if you can. Spectator hours are
9:00 to 5:00. Cost will probably be around $5 for adults.

Oh, and don't forget to bring lots of money for shopping. There will
be many vendors present selling food and toys (I'm sure your cats will
write up a list prior to you leaving the house!!).

OK folks, the cat is out of the bag, (I now know what they mean). Kai
will be at the Boston show. He only needs 17 points to Grand so keep your
fingers, toes and paws crossed! He hasn't been to many shows this year, so he
is all primed for this one!
I'm calling the vets today to make sure they are all up on their

missed all spring and most of the summer shows.
And, Teddy will be there in HHP also. So, to that person that called
and offered me a few grand to keep him out...sorry, I'll take the ribbons

Depending on the timing, Melissa may try to hook up with Mamacin to

OK, here goes...

It's 9B High Pine Ave., Nashua... 883-6997

From Rte 3, take exit 6. At the end of the ramp, head east (from the
northbound lane, go right. From southbound, go left). Get into the
left lane as you will be turning left onto Blue Hill Ave (it's also
Pine Hill Road). The road makes a sharp left curve and becomes
(magically) Pine Hill Road. Go 1/2 mile to High Pine Ave on the left.
It's the 4th house on the right; it's a duplex. Look for the house
number by the front door....

If you're coming from Amherst St (Rte 101A), turn onto Charron Ave,
the street that runs across from Burger King, between Peters Nissan
and Gateway Volkswagen. Follow Charron Ave to the end and turn left
onto Pine Hill Road. Follow Pine Hill Road 1/2 mile to High Pine Ave
on your right. Turn right....

If any of you were at the Nashua show, my street is right across
from St. Stanislaus Hall.

I got the count at 7 right now, which means all laps have some potential
to be occupied, but knowing MY cats........

Shall we say 6:30, 7:00ish???

the exit ramps. It's located across from the Sunoco station
just before the 7-11. I noticed tonight that the street sign
is on a telephone pole across the road (weird), but if you
see a sign for "Tina's Psychic Studio" on your left, that's the
corner of Blue Hill Ave. It's only 100 yards or so from the end
    of the northbound ramp.

Reveler's Cat Club is holding their 12th Annual show on March 20-21,
1992 at the San Mateo Expo Center in San Mateo.

This show is always a big event on the west coast. It is the largest
show west of the Mississippi, excluding the CFA Invitational. We
really try to make the exhibitors comfortable and happy. We offer ring
trophies (Silver bowls from Tiffany's!!), and a catered exhibitor's
party on Saturday evening in the show hall, complete with dance music.

If you think you would like to be part of this by exhibiting your cat,
please get in touch with me so I can get a show flyer in the mail to
    you.

I don't know if Cat House Originals is one of our vendors this year or
not. They have been for the past 3 years. Will let you know after our
February meeting on the 18th. Vendors have to have paid in full by

(I know this was addressed to Jo, but I can answer this one!)

Cat House Originals doesn't have a catalog, but has a pamphlet. Since I
already have 2 of their trees, I don't normally keep it around.
However, I will be at a show next weekend (2/8-9) and if they are there
I'll pick one up. Also, you can call them -- they are the nicest
people! They'll more than likely be glad to send you one!

sometime around Feb. 22-23, but I didn't want to wait too long
    	   to ask.

    	2) Is this a National affiliated show ?? Is there an International

The CFA Almanac shows that there will be a cat show in Boston on the
weekend of the 22-23rd of February. It is being held at the Boston
Marriott/Copley Pl. and the cat club putting it on is called Cats Plain
and Fancy. This will be a CFA show. CFA is The Cat Fancier's Association
and it is an international organization.

There is an organization that that has the word international in it's
name. That is TICA (The International Cat Association). The Boston
show will not be a TICA show.

CFA is the world's largest registering body for purebred cats, but many
folks do not know that they are international in scope.

Most shows in the US will not attract cats from other countries. This
is because many of the other countries have quarantine laws and
bringing those cats back to their home countries after the show would
mean they would have to be quarantined for anywhere from 2-6 months
    depending on the country.

Does anyone have a date for the Peabody, MA TICA show ??? That
location (in the mall) isn't all that bad, it's at the quietest end
and has only one entry way to the mall. I've often thought it would
be a great place for a dog show, except there's no place to exercise
    the dogs .....

Note that if you want to you can easily take the "T" from the Riverside
station down to the "Copley" stop. parking at the station used to be
~2.00/day. the cost is ~2.00 for the ride you, another ~2.00 for the
ride out. To get to the riverside stop take 128/95 south from either
route 2 or the mass pike to exit 31 or 32, look for the signs for
"grove street". the only thing to remember is that on the way out
you will need to take a "D" train. this is the only train which goes
to riverside. don't worry on the ride out about missing your stop
"riverside" is the last stop. i believe the total cost of ~6.00 is
less quite a bit less than what you will pay for parking.

Those of us on the east coast wonder where a place ever got the name
"Cow Palace"! A cat show at Cow Palace just strikes me so funny!

Perhaps we should bring CHUBS to the Cow Palace - he really is a Texas
Coon, not a Maine Coon. :^)

re: The name "Cow Palace" -

I remember my parents telling me that that whole area was pasture land

so maybe that's how they came up with the name.

22.64it's gonna be great!MUTTON::BROWNThu Mar 12 1992 15:2717
The reason that they call it the Cow Palace is because this is where
they do the livestock shows, rodeos, etc. The main room is called the
"arena" and then the surrounding rooms are called "cow barns" for some
    reason.

The reason for Reveler's moving is because right now the main arena is
covered in ice. Yep, the San Jose Sharks hockey team is playing there
now and there is ice on the floor. They gave us the option of laying a
wood floor over the ice and holding the show there anyway, but seeing
as how we are usually freezing cold in that huge room when we aren't
standing on ice, we decided against it.

The Expo center is climate controlled too. I am excited about this
show. The Expo is going to be all decked out. We have been planning
    the decor for a year!

    THEREFORE, ..... COW PALACE.

Nope, Cow Hallow is an area situated between the Marina and Pacific

OK, just called my Aunt to verify this Cow Palace business. Yes, it
was pasture land way back when, (she's 72 and grew up in that approx
area - it's on the edge of Excelsior District going into Brisbane). It
was used for livestock shows, there are maybe one or two small pasture
areas left there and she mentioned that going back to when she was a
child most of that area was a sort of farm land.

Telegraph Hill was once known as Goats Hill. Today there aren't any
goats left, just people known as the cliff dwellers.

Dian, you missed a GREAT show this weekend! I had planned on visiting
for an hour or so just to check out the Campaigners and see Opie in his
first ring, but I ended up having the pleasure of agenting 2 adorable
Persian kittens on Saturday. I've been spoiled with the non-grooming of
Exotics so this gave me a taste of what it is like with the longhairs!!!

Michele it was a pleasaure to meet you and I'm glad that you enjoyed
the show! Folds are adorable and they ended up being one the breeds
selected for me on the Sheba Select-a-Cat system. As always Jan it
was great seeing you and Onyx. His coat is so beautiful...

The show hall was HUGE and it was a good thing because the judges
entered the show hall on a motorized cable car which made the rounds
dropping the judges off at their rings. The rings were so tastefully
decorated and the rosettes were INCREDIBLE (roe, you would have loved
them...). Various sized silver bowls were also given to the winners
    along with the rosettes.

Sheba sponsored "The Gallery of Champions" and it was stunning. They
had tall marble-like pillars with large pictures of the Top Ten and
Best of Breed for the year. They did a GREAT job.

CFA had a booth and provided alot of information to visitors and
exhibitors alike. They had the updated Breed Profiles and also
had grooming videos, etc. It was great that they had a presence
    at the show.

Adding to the excitement was the ESPN camera crew filming the festivities.
They were getting some great shots and were doing random interviews
with the visitors. I believe that they said it will be airing on June
    27.

The club deserves a "JOB WELL DONE". It was another excellent show!

I just placed Mirabel with a breeder in PA, and she will be at that
show. Her name is Shirley Johnson and she will be showing Birmans.
And Judy Bennet will be there with Nitro, the Birman that is trying for
a national win in championship. This is the last weekend of the show
season, so all the shows will be jammed with cats trying to get those
    last points.

List of shows for the rest of this year?? If we gave you what was
scheduled in CFA right now, you would probably miss out on some shows.
Show must be licensed 90 days in advance, so a list given now won't
include shows that are licensed and planned after today.

Find out who the most popular entry clerk is in NH and get on there
mailing list. THat way, whenever they are entry clerking a show they
    will send you a flyer.

Each show has a different sponsoring club, and a different vendor
contact, so you will have to do some checking with each different show.
When you get the show flyer, call the person listed as the vendor
    contact.

I believe the "Seacoast" CFA show is scheduled for Aug 22-23. It's a

will be on Long Island this year ...but there are hopes that it will
be in New England again sometime in the future.

The "Seacoast show" planned for August used to be held one week earlier
in Manchester. The show hall was *very* hot so I doubt if anyone is
sorry to see the location change, ..but those of us with conflicting
plans sure are sorry to not be able to be a part of it.

ARGH! Too many shows, not enough of ME! Well, if there were better
judges at Medina, I'd probably consider going there. But if you're
going, you'll have fun! One of the judges that is going to be in Medina
finaled Robbie this weekend -- the other one would rather look at the
ladies than the cats! Seriously! I watch how he judges cats -- he's
stroking the cat, but looking to see what the women are wearing. The
next time he's judging a show that I'm at, I'm wearing a short skirt,
and low cut blouse!! ;^) Then maybe he'll final my cat! ;^) ;^)

On the funny side: someone asked me at last weeks show what kind of
Birman I had! (A silver-blue birman with a heart shaped face????)
That's not as bad as a judge in Texas! She put the Korat back in the
cage and said "This is my best Ocicat!"

Who knows...I may show up at a show in California if P.A.'s attitude

    Hello everyone!

I've run into a slight problem. As most of you know, Cheryl Coleman
will be coming up to Fitchburg this weekend for the Seacoast cat show
in Fitchburg. She is to stay at my house. Unfortunatly, I need to
have some minor surgery done on Thursday and will possibly be staying
at the hospital Thursday night (depending on what they find).

I was wondering if there is another very generous person who would have
Cheryl stay at their house. I hate to do this, but this surgery must
be done and this weekend is the only time I could make it.

PLEASE, can someone help??? I don't think I can find a hotel room for
    her at this late date!!!

If you can help, please send me mail as soon as possible.

    Thanks.

    Cheryl,

The weather is beautiful in January in California. What a nice change
from the cold east coast weather. Our show hotel will the the Red Lion
in San Jose, a very nice place. They give us a special rate, only $52
for single, double, triple or quad rooms. The everyday room rate is
$145, so you can see what a deal this is. The club provides
transportation to the show hall if you are from out of town.

I would put you up at Chez Mysinhs, but I usually stay at the show
hotel that weekend since I have to be at the hall so early, and Morgan
Hill is about a 40 minute drive from the show hall.

I'm the 'Cheryl' that is coming to Fitchburg this weekend that was
supposed to stay with Holly Taylor. HELP!!! I'm in desperate need of a
place to stay! I don't ask for much -- just a room for me and my 2 cats
can sleep! For 2 nights! The reason I decided to come to the Fitchburg
show was because Holly was so generous to donate a place to stay ---
I'm on a limited budget. Anyhow, I am looking for a very inexpensive
hotel, in a safe location, that accepts pets, near Fitchburg.

PLEASE help me find a place, or I'll be sleeping in my car! (The litter

Cheryl, what price do you consider to be cheap for lodging? There were
signs around for places like The Fairfield Inn in southern NH in the
$29 price range, although I'm not sure if that's weekend or weekday
price. Seems fairly inexpensive and the hotel is nice but the problem
is it's about an hour away from Fitchburg and you might not want to
commute that distance. (I don't know Fitchburg area at all but am

I just wanted to give an update on the Maine Coon that Kim talked about
under the 'whine' topic. One of the judges called the first part of his
allbreed championship finals. And yes, the Maine Coon with the nasty
attitude was one of the long hairs that finaled, as well as an Exotic
Shorthair. The BEST part, however, was that the shorthair champions
were a Tonkinese and a Korat! Yes, my little P.A. made the first part

Yup, between mom and I, we've got three of them. And I'm ordering
another one. Two of the three we have are the single post with the
cicil(sp??) rope around it and a single perch covered in carpet on top.
Bottom is covered in carpet as well. The other one we've got has a
"slide" down the side, covered in carpet. It's really neat!

They're FANTASTIC trees!! Artie Mitchell definitely has quality work.
It used to be that he was working on them in his spare time in his
cellar. He now has made it into a full time business with quite a few
people working for him. These trees are wonderful!

The one I'm ordering is a tripple deccer with a little "crow's nest" on
top and two more perches. I figured that kittens will LOVE to climb on
it (although it's 3 tiers, it's only about 4' tall).

ALL of Arubacat trees have the cicil(SP again??) rope around the posts.
And the cats LOVE this stuff! Great for sharpening the ole claws!! (-:

I have a Cat show related question for thoses of you familiar with the CFF
association.

I am planning to purchase a kitten and would like to show her in the
Marlboro show as a kitten on November 15.

I know I can pay a listing fee for any kitten who hasn't been registered
yet, as long as both parents are. My question is that this little girls
parents are both registered in CFA not CFF.

Do I need to fill out a three generation pedigree and have it signed by
the breeder and processed before I could enter her in the Marlboro show?

Please advise..
Thanks
Valerie

22.201JUPITR::KAGNOMom to the Wrecking CrewThu Oct 01 1992 13:3717
    Val,

Yes, and you also have to attach a copy of the parents' CFA
registration papers. Or, if your kitten is CFA registered, just
attach a copy of her papers and not the parents'.

So, you will need her 3 generation pedigree and her CFA papers or her
parents papers if she doesn't have them. Also, from what I remember, a
copy of the pedigree won't do; you have to complete the pedigree form
CFF provides so they will have an original (I just hand wrote it
    instead of typing it out).

    Hope this is clear.

on a display table (candy, cat toys, cat beds, dried
flower arrangements, etc) and you buy raffle tickets
and everyone is a winner. Stop by and say hello to
Priscilla and tell her you are from the feline file.

Boxborough: We will have our craft table with all our best sellers
(cat beds, felt toys, afghans etc) as well as some
beautiful new crafts which were hand-made by our committee.
Our new kitty doorstops are GREAT.....

And thanks to Karen Fallon she has asked the PB shelter
to supply the stewards for the show. So we will have
a few of our young volunteers helping at the judging
               booths.

I will be covering the shelter booth on Saturday with
Yvonne's help in the A.M. and Pam Gladding (another feliner)
will be covering it on Sunday. Please stop by and say hello...

Hope to see some of you there...

If that is the same type as the one they had in Portland Maine, it was

Denise, if it's any help the brochure that Karen sent me says the
Boxborough show is at the Boxborough Host Hotel at the junctions of
routes 495 and 111 in Boxborough. "for more info call Karen Fallon

Gulf Shore Regional Qualifier - we had an excellent show. Glimmer had
earned Grand Premier the previous week in Galveston, TX. This was how
he fared at the qualifier show :

On Saturday :	Warner Katchel - SP - Best Cat in Premiership
Stan Barnaby - SP - 5TH Best Cat in Premiership
Georgette Wawazrn - SP - Did not final

On Sunday :	Willa Hawke - AB - 4TH Best Cat in Premiership
Evelyn Prather - AB - Best Cat in Premiership
Joan Wastlhuber - AB - Best Cat in Premiership

Glimmer was high scoring cat in premiership and is on his way to the
Invitational. Of course, this will make you all envious; I live only
30 minutes from the show hall in Fort Worth.

Any of you who are coming to the Invitational, please look me up. I
have the questionble honor of being asked to be the assistant to the
show manager, Bob Buck (who is from the Chicago area). Also, my wife,
Sylvia, will be co-hosting the Bi-Color Persian display.

Oh BTW, Glimmer is a Cream & White Persian Neuter. This will be his
second appearance at the Invitational. He qualified as a kitten for
the very first Invitational 5 years ago in St. Louis. Didn't make any
finals then, we are hoping for a better performance this time.

    See you at the show,

onto Route 111. If you are coming from the North, you will take a right
off the exit ramp and go over the highway. If you are coming from the
South, you take a left off of the exit ramp. There is a gas station
directly across from the entrance to the hotel. It also has a business
in there too. It is very close to the highway. The Show hall is on
the left side of the bldg. if you are facing it. BXB is right down the
street from what I hear. Don't forget your badge, Deccies get a dollar
off at the door!!! Adults $4, Seniors,(Deccies with badge) + Kids $3,

Moonsta's Petite Josette is now a Grand Champion! She took one best of
breed against a grand and then took seven second best of breeds, seven
best champions. At long last she is finished showing in CFA and can
start to look forward to having babies!

I want to say thank you to all the people who helped at the Pat Brody

Over all, we had a very good show. No major problems and things went
pretty smoothly. I even got home at a decent hour after breakdown last

Congrats, Karen! It was very nice to meet you yesterday, and I am sure
we crossed paths in the past as well. Glad to hear of Josette's grand!

It was great to see folks at the show I haven't seen in a long time...
Karen, Linda Sobek, Nancy Jenkins (who was clerking in a ring so I
wasn't able to say hello... but was able to drool over her two Birman
boys, Olery and Ritzy. Gorgeous cats!!). Linda, your boys are lovely
too and I was proud to see Offislander do so well in the ring where we
were there to cheer you on. Congratulations, and please inform us how
the rest of the show went!

Once again I must rave about the Pat Brody Shelter crafts. Those
volunteers are absolutely amazing!! I went home with lots of neat
stuff. The catnip mat was a hit! Except that none of the cats use it
to sit on... they would much rather beat it up!! It was their
absolute favorite thing I brought home. Sandy, I want another one!
Pam Gladding is the most clever person with enormous talent for
devising really great craft items a kitty is sure to love.

One of the vendors was selling a fishing pole type product. Clear
plastic, with telephone cord like stuff attached to the pole, and on
the end were various toys. Some had a ball, some had furry mice, and
others had feathers. I bought the one with the furry mouse attached,
and this was another big hit toy with the boys this weekend! It
springs up and down like a slinky.

Again, congrats to everyone who's kitties did so well... but I think
those notes belong in the BRAG topic, not in the idle chatter note!

22.225Had a great time in Boxboro!STUDIO::COLAIANNIMon Nov 16 1992 10:2541
Well, I guess I can be considered a veteran now! I spent all of
Saturday at the Boxboro show with Sandy Merritt and the Pat Brody
Shelter booth. The shelter had a really good weekend. The cat beds went
like hot cakes! We sold out of them on Saturday.

Sunday, Pam was trying to make beds on the fly, but the show chairman
informed her that it was against CFA rules to have her sewing machine
going in the show hall. SOOOO, Yonee grabbed the ones that were already
cut out, rushed home, sewed three of them, rushed back, and put them up
for sale! I now have five more to sew at home. But not in such a rush!
    ;-)

The only bad thing I can think of about the weekend, was that when
Priscilla from the shelter got to Marlboro to set up the booth over
there, she was almost attacked by a woman (don't know the name) who
said she wasn't going to be allowed to have crafts OR the little
chinese raffle she had planned to set up. This wouldn't have been a big
problem, except Priscilla had asked about these things way in advance,
and had a letter in her hand stating she was welcome to do both of
these things as well as have cats there from the shelter. Oh yeah, the
lady also said the shelter was always getting a free ride at the shows!

It ended up with Priscilla stating she felt very unwelcome there, and
didn't go at all. No cats, crafts or raffles. I understand that the
shelter was missed by a lot of people who went to the show too.

I think that if someone has a letter of approval, that should be it. I
think the shelter was treated rather shabbily down there. Poor
Priscilla was in tears when she left there! I felt really bad for her.

I guess that's enough chatter for one note! ;-)

I had a great time meeting kitties and their people. Karen, your Joey
is gorgeous! I was watching when she got her last points! I almost
cheered out loud, but managed to keep myself under control! ;-)
Congrats Karen and everyone else who did well!

ps..as far as the Marlboro show...my guess is there was a
misunderstanding between the contact for the show and the show
manager. We did receive conformation in writing....but the
show manager did not agree with what was in writing. The very
sad part is that many of the volunteers put in many long hours
preparing for the auction...so you can imagine the sad faces.

Thanks Yonee! I think we had a lot of fun! The woman who was benched
next to me bought a whole bag full of beds on Saturday (she may have
wiped you out!). She likes to give them away when she sells the
kittens. A good idea I think. Jimmy called to ask about Tippy while I
was home at lunch. I guess he spoke with the wife/mother and all is
well. I will try to talk to the ones that actually bought her though,
    just to be sure.
See you at the next show!

22.230Update...STUDIO::COLAIANNIMon Nov 16 1992 13:3911
I heard from Holly through the mail, and it does seem like there was
a communications mix up about the show. I guess we were more upset by
the way the woman seemed to have treated Priscilla than actually having
    to cancel the raffle.

I assured Holly that I would make sure the info she wrote to me was
passed on to Priscilla. I think that will smooth everything over all
    around.

22.231AYRPLN::TAYLORD.I.L.L.I.G.A.F.Mon Nov 16 1992 14:3030
I feel compelled to reply here as I was there at the Marlboro show when
    the misunderstanding occurred.

The space was given to the Pat Brodie shelter originally to just bring
cats to be placed in homes. They then asked if they could have their
craft table/auction. It was unclear what the auction was.

Originally, when the show manager said that Priscilla could not have
the craft table, she did not realize that someone else had sent them a
note saying they could have their craft table/auction. As I said, it
was unclear what the auction was. Finally, the show manager agreed to
allow the Pat Brodie shelter to have their craft table, but they could
not have the raffle since we were having the same raffle inside.

Both organizations are non-profit. The proceeds from the show and the
raffle will be split up and given to the different shelters in the area.
The show manager's main concern was that the shelter's raffle (which
was identical to ours) was going to conflict with ours and we would not
make as much money on it.

In no way did the show manager want to upset Priscilla. However, she
had the show's and all of the shelter's best interest at heart. If
priscilla was allowed to proceed with the raffle, then our raffle
inside probably wouldn't have been as big of a success.

However, the show manager DID say that she was more than welcome to
have her table of crafts, but Priscilla didn't see this.

    Holly

22.232BUSY::MANDILEHold you, with tears in my eyes....Mon Nov 16 1992 16:187
It possibly could have been the manner in which the news
was passed on to Priscilla, rather than the actual auction thing.

Some people are not aware about how (gruff, rude, arrogant?) they
may come across to other people?

Just a note here about the show last weekend in Conn.

We only went there on Sunday and didn't take any of our cats to
show but should have. The weather was bad and not all the breeders
bothered to show up. If we would have brought our cats...I'm sure
we could have won something with there only being 3 or 4 cats per
cattagory. There is still alot that I don't understand about showing
cats though. It seems that every cat got a first place tag put on
their cage....? Then it looked like almost every cat got a best color
tag too...either black or white...not sure what the difference was.

Kind of funny watching everyone there with their cats though. Some
of the people seem very stuck up and others very friendly. I don't
want to start listing names here but some breeders think they are just
    too good for people.

One thing I did notice however, was that some of the breeders
brought their own cages with them...real nice ones too...wood with
glass doors. I'd like to know where to get one and how much it would
    cost.

Like I said, we haven't shown any of our cats yet...mostly because
we are waiting for 1 - Simons hair to grow back, 2 - Jezzabell to grow
into her ears. The other two are breeders only. Figure Simon will be
ready by April...isn't there a big show then? and Jezzabell should be
ready in another 5 to 6 months...although I think she could win now
with her pig face the way it is...she is soooooo ugly! Jeane hates it
when I call her that...but, she is....sooooo ugly. She is so ugly, she
has to win something just because the judge would feel sorry for her...
poor thing. I wouldn't wish anyone to look like she does! Its just
her ears are alittle too big...as far as the rules go.
Back to Simon, he did champion in one show before we got him...so,
to get him a grand shouldn't be too much a problem.

Well, enough said about this except...before I went to this show, I
told Jeane that I wasn't sure if I would like going or not, but once
    there....it wasn't too bad....all those women! ;-) Sure I'll go
again! HeHeHe yea, I know...pretty bad aeee? Not really, just
kidding. But, don't tell Jeane I said that.

The wooden security cages run about $400-500 depending one who you get
them from. There is a guy in Washington state that makes them. His
name is Doug Hawley. His number should be in the CFA directory.

The black ribbon is the "best of the color class" win, and the white
ribbon is the "second best of the color class." Who ever got the
black ribbon won his/her color division. The color divisions are split
up by sub-classes. They split them up by males and females, and then
without the sex groups, by title. That is why so many cats can get a
blue ribbon. If a cat is the only copper eyed white female champion,
she would automatically get the blue ribbon. Then she would have to
compete with all the other blue ribbon whites for the best of color
ribbon, and then the best of color winner would compete with the best
of color in the other solid colors for the Best of Division win (brown
ribbon), and Second Best of Division win (orange ribbon).

Once you are going to shows, this will all fall into place for you.

Wow Jo! That is SO much different from CFF!!

We have blue and white ribbons. The blue ribbons are for best of class
(best black female rex champion). They split it up by sexes as well.
(two black rex champions could each get a best of class ribbon if
they're male and female). Then they compete for best and second best
of color (best black rex) which is the white ribbons. Then they compete
for best of breed which are black and gold ribbons.

thanks so much for the info on the wood/glass cages....I just gave
it to Jeane...now she wants to know where to get those drapes that the
showers put over top of the cages supplied by the show... I told her
to forget it and that she would just have to make one... Only problem
is...she don't sew. She told me that if a button falls off her shirt,
the shirt goes in the trash. I knew that. Anyway, if anyone knows of

Maybe I didn't explain the ribbons very well. Reading your explanation
of CFF, I thought they sounded very similar with the exception of the
color of the ribbons. Anyway, the main difference is that I think in CFA,
Rex are all shown in the same color division. You would hate that!
The color division is called "all Rex colors" I think.

You can buy premade cage drapes. They range in price from about
$100-500 depending on how fancy you want to go. You could probably
talk someone in your family that sews into making some for less, say
maybe the cost of the materials and a nice lunch out? :') Usually
    works for me. :')

Also.. There is a lady from NH (The Village Stitchery) that sets up at
some of the shows. Her curtains, though not elaborate, are very neat
and attractive and travel well. They start around $35-$40 for the
complete set. You'll see alot of her curtains in the New England show
    halls.

It's amazing how creative some folks are. At the Ramapo show one of the
Birman exhibitors had their cage decorated like an aquaruim. ..Aqaurium
background for curtains around the sides, seashells for decorations
and little fish (including a Birman catfish) hanging inside the cage.
The cat bed was made to look like a treasure chest. It was really cute.

I hope some of you got to visit the cat show in Boston this past

The funniest things overheard at the show:

."Will commercial cats no's xxx through xxx report to ring one..."
Commercial cats??? Turned out it should have been "premiership".

."Do these three cats all come from the same kennel?

. ...and the all-time-funniest that we hear so frequently...
"Do you make alot of money showing cats?" :^) :^) :^)

    town within MA?

Byfield, MA, zip code 01922, is listed in Mass. phone book but it
doesn't indicate where in MA Byfield is located - North, South, East,
    or Western Mass.?

Why is Byfield, MA sound so familiar to me? Wasn't that listed for a
CFF show the end of last year? Either the show in Greenfield, MA or
the one in Salisbury, MA this past December. I think I read it in the
Cat Fancy Magazine for November in the "show calendar" section.
Byfield could be a small town next to one of those.

In NH, there is a Goffstown and there is a little town adjacent to it
that is called Pinardville. Not too many people have heard of

As a spectator, I enjoyed it. Saw loads of beautiful cats, some

The decorations were beautiful, Jo and her fellow Revelers did a great
job. Some interesting speakers were there, including Jo's Dr Rue. The
man who trains SH III that Fancy Feast cat was there with one of the
cats, a beautiful shaded silver persian. Because we asked questions,
we were picked to receive a video tape on how to train your cat and
they'll be in touch with us in a couple of months and if the cat(s)

Karen, I saw them at a TICA show a few years ago (North Shore Shopping
Center) and felt strangely about them, too. Actually, the word
"disturbed" sums it up a little better. The women I spoke with (probably
the one you mentioned) said that you would get the "munchkinism" when
you bred one to any other breed. I then tried to picture a "munchkin"
Persian. What is this woman trying to achieve?

Perhaps fame and notariety, at the poor animal's expense.

Sorry for the sarcasm, Marlene, but I do have to agree with you about
feeling "disturbed." I think there should be limits as to what one can
breed for in the cat fancy. CFA seems to be less likely to accept
these new breeds, but other more liberal associations soak them up like
    water to a sponge.

22.280ISLNDS::FALLONTue Mar 30 1993 13:1014
If it is so, and the woman is the same, Solvieg Pflueger is a
geneticist. I don't believe TICA has accepted this breed altho they
were trying for it. TICA is a GENETIC registry of cats which is one of
the things that makes it a little different from other registering
associations. Therefore, you will see perhaps oddities that claim to
be genetic knocking at their door. One of the reasons that I like TICA
is that I can show my CFA Colorpoints as a Siamese. This is what they
truly are genetically! CFA is still trying to work out with the Breed
Council how to handle this. (actually my cats are AOV Orientals shown
in the Colorpoint class!! How do you think the Oriental came about?! If
you want to get real persnickety with the stodgy Siamese breeders, they
got Blue Points from the Russian Blue!)
Some day it will all settle out :'}.

I've heard about these munchkins and actually feel sorry for the poor
babies. They sound deformed. Poor things.

But if you think about it, there are other "deformed" cats being shown
in all of the associations as well. A prime example is the scottish
fold. The folding gene is actually a lethal gene! This is why you
can't breed two folded cats together. You'd get all dead kittens.
These cats have only been known to live about 9-10 years.

There's also the American Curl and the Manx and the Japanese Bobtail.
All are deformities that someone thought was "cute" and decided to
    create a breed. Poor things!

    Just MHO.

I have a hard time looking at the Munchins. Their front legs
(especially) are just too short. They were really cute cats but
I am just not comfortable with the length of their legs. The
Munchins at the Revelers show were being shown with the Household
Pets. One of the HHP owners expressed his unhappiness at animals
that are being bred for specific characteristics being shown in
a category that stresses spaying and neutering of the animals. (I
hope I phrased that well enought to get his idea across.)

In order for the Munchkins to be shown in CFA as household pets, they
have to be spayed/neutered if they are over the age of 8 months. I
have a problem with allowing them to be shown as household pets too,
but our current show rules allow all unregistered cats to be shown as
household pets. Nothing we can do about it. One thing that we can do
is not allow her to put up her sign that says MUNCHKINS in huge
letters. Several shows have had her take it down since it does violate
show rules (there is a rule that nothing above a certain height can be
put on top of a cage). I think she was asked to take the sign down at
least once at Reveler's, but we didn't have the time to keep checking
    to see if she complied.

The show was a success overall. The gate numbers were down a bit
because of the rain, but that is to be expected. We had overwhelming
response to our decorations this year. We decorated the show hall with
carousel horses that we had painted ourselves. We put the rings in a
circle and put two carousel horses in each ring. At the end of the
show the horses were sold at a silent auction. The minimum bid was
$25.00, and although I didn't come home with any of the three horses I
painted, my three all sold. One of them got the highest bid! It went
for $60! The other two went for $48 and $30. I had wanted to take one
home but I was so busy with the ed ring I never got a chance to go back
and see if I needed to make another bid.

The Ed Ring worked out okay, despite some glitches on Saturday. One of
our speakers never showed up, so I quickly arranged for Cherylee De
Young to give a presentation on Oriental Shorthairs. It was very
popular with the public. Then the last vet speaker had a family
emergency and couldn't come, so I asked the Fancy Feast Animal
Nutritionist to give a second talk, and he did. It worked out fine.
Sunday's speakers all showed up, thank goodness. Dr. Rue, my vet, did
two segments of half and hour each of just question and answer, and she
could have easily gone on for another hour each time. People always
have questions they would like to ask a vet, but either don't want to
bother the vet, or just forget to ask when they do see the vet. The
other Sunday speaker was Kate Gamble, who is an Animal Behaviorist in
San Francisco. I didn't get a chance to listen to her presentation,
but she sure had a crowd in the Ed Ring.

Other highlights of the show: The judges were brought into the hall in
a horse and carriage. :') We try to do something spectacular, and
something different, every year. At the close of judging on Saturday,
Reveler's throws a catered party for their exhibitors in the show hall,
complete with open bar, food, and a disc jockey. The top tens finalists in
each ring receive sterling silver bowls or goblets depending on
placement in the finals. The highest scoring cats in championship,
premiership and kitten class all received special trophies, a sterling
    silver coffee service.

This show is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work for those of us
in the club. All I can say now is "I am glad it is over till next
    year!" :')

Took a trip over too the Maine Coon Cat Association show in Worcester,
Ma. yesterday to see all the kittens and cat's parade their stuff. The
room they were using for the show hall was anything but spaceous. Talk
about crampt. I felt bad for the exhibitors because there was barely
enough room for them never mind John & Sue Public. The worst was the
ends of the aisles in front of the judges. Whenever there was a final
it drew crowds and there was very little room for traffic.

Bijou's breeder was there and had brought her siamese Perriwinkle,
two fawn Abbysinian's Fools's Gold and Penuche, and a blue aby. Once
we made our way over to where she was benched my wife spent a little
time cuddling with the fawn female Fool's Gold (Goldie). Goldie was
a little doll. If you'd like to see a picture and have todays Worcester
Telegram, check out page B2. My wife decided to hang with the aby's a
bit while I went off window shopping.

I spent a little time over at the Haddeleigh (sp?) House booth to get
some goodies for the kids at home and signed up for their catalog.
Arubacat tree's were there but I didn't see Artie around. They had
mostly small sized tree's there, unlike the 2 skyscrapers I have at
home. After more windo shopping I headed back to get the wife.

When I got over to Pat Senser spot to get the wife, she had her hand
out asking for the checkbook. She somehow managed to talk Pat into
selling her Goldie. I'm now a two aby household..... Little Goldie
is such a character and comedian. We're just hoping the other kids
at home have a little sense of humor.... 8^)

RE: the crowded showhall. Actually, it's the size of a lot of other
show halls we've had. You should have seen the show in Vermont! It
was about 2/3 the size of that hall. We usually don't have any problem
getting around, but the gate was unbelievable. From what I heard, they
made over $3000 just on the gate. I guess that people just couldn't
wait for the show at the Centrum.

After seeing Karen's note in the "brag" thread, I thought I'd mention a
few things here about this weekend's show. I got to meet (even got to
hold) "Drac" (is that really his name, Karen?). I can't get over the
color of his and Lynxette's eyes.

My favorite kitty was the little Blue Aby. Sandy (my SO) doesn't care
for Aby's, she thinks they're too lanky. Of course, Karen's cats are
*way* too "lanky". Sandy likes Persians, at the other end of the skull
shape spectrum. Maybe a (pair of) Somali(s) as a compromise?

Did anybody else see the strange little kitten that had those great huge
ears; he almost looked like a Sphynx but didn't seem to be hairless.
Sandy thought he looked like Gizmo from that movie (not Critters; I can't
think of the name just now - the one where you're not supposed to feed
them after midnight or get them wet 'cause they turn into bad versions).

The number of Maus and Ocicats was impressive too.

Nice show (not as crowded and hot/stuffy as usual), if a little bit
    difficult to find.

I was able to catch Lynxette being judged.....she's a doll.
I also fell for the blue aby, and his/her cagemates. The
Ocicats were eye catching, too. There was a smoke persian
kitten that I loved, too. I really enjoyed the judge that
judged that ring. She was very impressive with her way of
handling all the cats that entered her ring. She joked about
those with "spring disease",(females in heat) and took a lot
of time and care in her handling.....

    for regional awards?

22.308DAGWST::BROWNeverybody run Prom Queen's Gotta Gun!Wed Apr 28 1993 13:3720
The show was a lot of fun. I had my first experience agenting another
breed. Donna Fuller asked me to agent her Russian Blue, Zanzor, for her
since she had to judge in Pomona. Zanzor and I had a great time. He
made a Best Cat win in Vicki Dickerson's ring and I was thrilled. He
was very easy to show, and easy to love. I have all new respect for
the Russian Blue. And, it looks like I helped him move up by one place
in the Region! :') Looks like he will end up being about 10th Best Cat
    in the region.

I think that Pee Man was edged out of his regional kitten win at the
last moment. He was sitting at 15th Best kitten, but there were others
right on his tail. I think he will end up being about 17th, which
isn't an award that they give out, but what the heck, it is the closest
I have ever come to a regional kitten win. :') He should get The White
Glove Society (local Birman club) award for Best Birman Kitten in the
region, and if no one caught up to him in the months I didn't show him,
he should get their award for Best Birman in Championship too. We will
just have to wait and see.

22.309Society/org. question....ISLNDS::FALLONThu Apr 29 1993 16:404
To get an award from a certain group or societey: the Oriental
Shorthairs of America, do you need to belong to the club or
organization or do they just recognize the cat for it's breed?
    Karen
22.310Depends on the club/organizationDAGWST::BROWNeverybody run Prom Queen's Gotta Gun!Thu Apr 29 1993 19:0912
It depends on the organization. In NBF (National Birman Fanciers),
White Glove Society (Region 2 Birman club), and I think SCBF (Sacred
Cat of Burma Fanciers), you do not have to be a member of the club to
get the award. I think that is only fair. The award should go to the
best of breed, not the highest scoring cat that is owned by a member of
    the organization.

I think that Pee will be best in our region, but not do too well on a
national level. There was some tough competition this year, with
Orion, Olery and Ombre out all year looking for points.

Can anyone help me? My daughter has a cat that she wants to show. She
is new to this field. What does she have to do to register in a show
this summer? Also where is the next show? We live in Meriden,
    Connecticut.
    Mary
22.330JUPITR::KAGNOKitties with an AttitudeTue May 18 1993 11:3621
First, she has to select the association she wishes to show her cat in.
CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) is the largest registering body of cats,
and there are some breeds not yet recognized by the CFA. CFF (Cat
Fanciers Federation) and TICA (The International Cat Association) are
other organizations she could show her cat in.

If her cat is not a purebred, there are Household Pet (HHP) classes for
non-pedigreed/mixed breed cats, and also an Apparent Purebred (APB)
class for cats that look like purebreds but have no pedigree or papers
    to prove their lineage.

Once she determines where she wants to show and what class, she should
obtain an entry form for the show by contacting the entry clerk listed
for that particular show. The entry clerk can assit her in completing
the paperwork. If her cat is a purebred, she should register it with
whatever association she wishes to show in.

22.331Tell me cat show basics - 101SALES::LTRIPPWed Aug 11 1993 13:5327
Can someone give me "cat show 101" basics?

Specifically what I'm thinking (and isn't that always dangerous?) is
if/when I can get Barney in (see 31.214ish or so) he might just make a
decent show cat. He is after all *aparently* a purebread Sealpoint
Siamese, and he has been someone's pet in the past, and he has got the
proudest walk I've ever seen, and doesn't mind attention or being
    handled.

Beyond that though lies things like, he is *obvious* in his breed, but
I have no offical papers to prove it. (You don't just abandon a
purebred with papers tucked in his flea collar now do you?!) Can I
even entertain such a thought? In which category? If I have him
neutered is he still "showable"? Declawed, same question?

Can I offer him as a mate, would anyone even entertain my offer?

I guess just tell me how to get started. From where I live, I can
easiest access MA, NY, RI, and CT for shows perhaps NH if not too far
    into the state.

I am and do feel like a novice, but he is just such a beautiful cat!

Secondly, there is Bandit, my neutered and declawed half siamese. He
too has a beautiful temperment, is there a category for him?

    Lyn
22.332Here's what I "think" is right! ;-)STUDIO::COLAIANNII have PMS and a handgun ;-)Wed Aug 11 1993 14:1923
    Lyn,

I don't know too much about cat shows, but I'm pretty sure that they
don't allow declawed cats in any category, including Household pet.

I think that an apparent purebred can usually/sometimes(?) be entered
in the household pet category, if spayed/neutered and not declawed.

I don't think you would get any takers on using him to breed without
the papers to show his ancestors, except maybe someone else who might
have a pet quality Siamese that want to breed irresponsibly, and to me
that is being selfish on their part.

I'd neuter Barney, and get him settled into your household first, and
then think about showing the little guy off to the world! ;-) He sounds
    absolutely wonderful!

Well, there you go. Another very 'iffy' subject for me to reply to.
;-) I must be feeling self abusive today! 8-} I know others know much
more than I do, but the above is "I think" pretty close to right.

22.333Your Mileage May VaryDRUMS::FEHSKENSlen, Engineering Technical OfficeWed Aug 11 1993 15:4214

Regarding declawing and shows - there's an article in the latest Cats
Magazine about declawing and if I recall correctly it said that the
policy regarding showing declawed cats varies from one association
(i.e., show sponsor) to the next. The article summarizes the policies
for the major associations. I suspect the rules about what constitutes
a "household pet" are similarly variable. Without papers, though, I
doubt any show would you let you enter him as a purebred. (My own Merlin
looks like (indeed, is indistinguishable from) a Russian Blue, but I know
for a fact he's a mixture). Similarly, it's unlikely anyone would be
interested in breeding him without documented bloodlines.

22.334cat show in NHJUNCO::WHITEHAIRThe more I get...the more I want!Tue Aug 31 1993 10:0538

Well, since Jeane isn't going to do it.....I will.

We went to our first cat show this last weekend and showed our
exotic shorthair, Tootsie. She did well considering she really had
no compitition. Tootsie is now a Champion...just one show. This will
be it for her...its on to breeding when the time comes. She did very
good durring her time with the judge. She could have done better
though. The big thing I noticed is that she does not hold her tail
up when the judge gets her out of the cage. Out of the 8 rings,
Tootsie got 7 winners ribbons, 7 first place (blue) ribbons, 7 best
of color ribbins and 7 2nd best of breed/division ribbons. One
judge threw her out of the ring...??? What a witch...aeee. Kind of
    weird.
Two funny things happened durring the weekend in NH. Just before
the first ring, Jeane was preping Tootsie and she jumped up on top of
the cage behind us. the cage fell in...no damage was done but boy
was tootsie freaking out when she got to the judge. The other thing
that happened was on Sunday, Jeane and I were checking out of the
hotel around noon...from the schedual we had, it showed us showing
Tootsie late that afternoon but, low and behold, while we were out,
#82 was called. Of course we didn't hear. I guess on the last call,
the nice lady we were compeating against, ran over to our area and
told the nice lady next to us that our cat was ready to be shown....
Well, the lady next to us grabbed up Tootsie and took her to the
ring for us. When we got back, there were 4 more ribbons there...
    we were like....what?????
One other thing, the Holiday Inn in Manchester...where the show
was...had the best breakfest buffet I've ever had.
I also have to give credit to the club VP for answering many of
my questions and offering assistance anytime I wanted it.

Only one Birman was at the show.

    	Hal...for Jeane and Tootsie
After its all done and said...I have to admit, I did enjoy myself.
Did notice that the shows are very political but, I don't worry about
    it myself...thats Jeane's job.

    Leslie,

If you go, stop by the raffle. I'll most likely be there helping my
mother run it. Mondo's cage will be right next to the raffle, so I
    might be there, instead.

What is the better day? It really doesn't matter. This is the first
time we've run the show two days, so I don't know how the crowd will be
    the second day.

One thing, be sure not to eat before you get there. The Cullinary ARts
program for the school is doing the food and they always have WONDERFUL
food! Last year we had a choice of Lasagna or Chicken Cordon Bleu.
    REALLY good food!!

Mornings are usually better, because there's usually less of a crowd.

    Hope to see you there!!

We visited the show early Saturday morning, and met Holly, Mondo and
Sweetie, and then a little later Leslie and her daughter. At the
raffle I won two combs, three candies, a cute little cats shaped
creamer, and a BIG RED FIRE HYDRANT! It's called a "Doggie Doolie", and
I finally figured out what you do with it. No, that's not what you do
with it... It hangs on a wall and dispenses dry stuff like bird seed
    or cat litter or whatever.

Rocky loves the combs - he chews on one while I comb him with the
other. He's getting into being combed; Merlin's long been addicted and
will come and grovel if you tap a comb on the floor...

We saw a few kittens that were just adorable - a pair of brown tabby Maine
Coons and a pair of American classic silver tabbies. Sandy was also very
impressed with the Ragdolls, and as we left the show she had decied she
wanted a Ragdoll or a Maine Coon as a new companion for Casper Kelly,
her cotton-candy brained Shaded Chinchilla Persian, who seemed dazed
    and confused by Chunky's disappearance.

On the way home we stopped at the Hopkinton Humane Society off Route 85.

This story continued with a happy ending in the Chunky note...

haired tortie! She is actually a real sweetheart, and the last I knew
she was still at PB's... I would have taken her home, but she was older
than what we were looking for. Plus, I don't need an escape artist in

I'm not sure what cats will be there....but I doubt they will take

on Sunday and this little girl just LOVES sneaking out and she is
so darn good at it!!!! She is a beautiful girl...who loves attention..
and is very playful!! She's still at the shelter and just hasn't found
the perfect parents who will tolerate her escaping and playful attitude!!

Coach Potato is also still there....and has just been released from
his cage a few weeks ago. Coach went through an awful time with that
"fatty Liver disease"....he was hospitalized for quite awhile, had to
be fed by tubes, and we kept him caged for awhile so we could
monitor his food intake real good!!! He's doing GREAT now and
hopefully will be adopted soon. He definitely needs to find a family
that has alot of patience because he still doesn't trust all humans.
Now you can ask...where did he get that name??? Well he was found
in back of the Coach House Inn...and went we brought him to the shelter
he just sat there and looked like a couch potato!!!! Hence..Coach
    Potato!!!

    HI there!
Gosh I'm still sniffling from the last note I read!
    WEll, here's the scoop:
There were ads in the Lowell Sun last Sunday. But I asked the show
Manager and she said it was okay if I offered $1 off to Deccies if
they show their badge at the door! How's that? :')
We did this once before, every little bit helps!! I just have to try
and remember to tell the person at the door. If you run into a problem
just give them my name of Cindi Holub's and it should be okay.
Hope to see you all there! I made some Christmas stockings last
nite to hang on my cage.

The show was great. We got to meet a whole bunch of FELINErs, and
swap pictures. We also met a wonderful older couple (English?) who
adopted one of Rocky, Robin and Blueberry's littermates (the other
tan siamese-like girl). The Hadleigh House folks thought that the
Jingle Cats CD was available at K-Mart, so we checked it out on the way
home (not so). Our favorite cat was a magnificent Maine Coon, who must
have been 12" across his whiskers, and who had paws as big as a child's
hands. There were also a couple of gorgeous classic American silver
    tabbies.

Let's see, who did I meet for the fitst time Saturday? I guess M-L and
Steve were my only 'new' people! ;-) It was wonderful to meet you, and
wonderful to see the other FELINER's I met also. Mike O'Neill surprised
me when he showed up with pictures of Lilac playing with the Christmnas
tree balanced on one back leg! She's such a special girl!

I also had the privilege of helping Karen fallon out with her crew at
the show! She and her husband are memebers of the club sponsoring the
show, and they had three cats with them! So, I tried to help getting
cats to and from the rings. It was fun, and I learned a little more
about how shows work. Steffi, I gave Wizzer LOTS of extra hugs and
kisses from Auntie Steffi! ;-) He's such a little guy!

I'll let Karen put in the results of the show. (that is if she gets in
    here soon enough! 8-) )

I had a great time both days, and also had a great time at the Brody
shelter table, even though I didn't really help out all that much. I
sort of showed up in case they needed help and to play anyway! ;-)
There were three adoptions during the weekend too! I like it! 8-)

I also figured out that we have a British Shorthair wanna-be at the
Framingham shelter! I thought he looked like an exotic shorthair, but
he has a nose! ;-) I'll post this in the other note more fully though.

Hi everyone, and thank you for showing me all your pictures!!
I am sooo bad, I forgot half your names. I apologize for not being
able to take the time to talk as much with you as I had wanted.
I would start one conversation and then have to run off and do
something else or answer a different question. It is not so hectic
when you are not actually putting on the show.

Yvonne was a great help too! She learned how to bring kitties to the
ring, mark a catalog and assist with placing kitties! I sadly but
wonderfully found a home that two of my babies went to together.

I also met several noters who are "read only", and I forgot their
names too. Ah, but I never forget a face!

There's a Hadleigh House store in Sudbury - it's about 15 minutes away
from the Mill. They're the same people who were at the show.

Take 27 to Sudbury. After 27 takes a hard left and crosses the railroad
tracks, there's a major intersection - 27 goes straight across, Concord
is to the left, there's a church on the left, take a right here, towards
route 20. The store is in the mall directly across 20 from where the
road intersects (either this mall or the next one to the right). They
have just about everything imaginable for cats.

Our office move is over and I'm back from a short vacation, so now I
can review the 400+ notes/replies that have accumulated since I've been
away!! FELINE notes are like rabbits and coat hangers -- they multiply
when you're not looking! Not a complaint, just amazement.

Anyway, my wife and I attended the Fancycats show at Centennial Hall in
Hayward, CA this past weekend and we had the pleasure of meeting Steffi
and her husband Bob. We swapped kitty pictures, of course, and had a
great time looking at all the sweeties and the kitty paraphernalia.

We saw lots of wonderful and available little ones. My favorite was a
Maine Coon Cat with jellicle markings. It's been some time since
seeing my last jellicle, and to see it on a Maine Coon was really a
treat. Steffi and Bob fell in love with the jellicle and also a
Birman. My wife and I would have loved to take the Maine Coon home
with us, but, alas, we already have a full house.

There's another show coming up on the 18th and 19th at the Hall of
Flowers in San Francisco. I'll be meeting the CFA coordinator of
the Animal Relief Fund to work out the details for our club's (Havana
Brown Fanciers) contribution to the feline victims of the midwest
floods and the recent SOCAL fires. I'll be there on the 18th around

    What's "jellicle" mean?

len (lover of Maine Coons with too many "mixed breed" cats to consider
another cat, at least for a while...).

22.384Jellicle catsEASI::GEENENVescere bracis meis.Wed Dec 08 1993 20:5612
Jellicle (I believe the spelling is correct) is a coloration where the
cat is essentially black with a white upside-down V on the face that
continues down the chest, and with white paws that makes the kitty look
like it's wearing socks. Occasionally there might be a little white
at the tip of the tail. The cat depicted on bags of Johnny Cat litter
is a jellicle cat, I think.

I first learned about jellicle cats from my sister, who had one. I
think it's derived from a children's story or something like that.
I'll check it out more in depth and get back to you later.

I also enjoyed myself on Saturday even though it was pretty rough
driving up in the snow. It was great to see everyone again....

    The PBS so-called bookmarks...are now paperclipless...and are
now considered kitty toys!!!! I bought two of them...and my cats
have been going crazy with them!!! Even if you attempted to use
them as bookmarks...my guess would be the cats would find them
    anyway!!!!

I bought three of the "bookmarks" and the cats love them. Robin in
particular tosses them and stands up on her hind legs to "dance" with
them. Merlin is too "mature" for such nonsense, but I got a picture of
him "wearing" one on his head, like a true-blue Brother of the Loyal Order
    of Mouse.

We looked high and low for the Hadfields, but our paths never crossed.

At the San Mateo cat show this past weekend they had a product
that might be just what the doctor ordered for my two who hate
claw clipping. However, I didn't manage to get back to the
booth before they packed up and left.

Does anyone who was there remember/or have any info on the
product you put in the litter box that is like an emery board
for cats. It was green, plastic, and stuck to the sides and
bottom of the box. It was completely washable too.

For those who weren't there, the idea is that when the cat
scratches in the box the green stuff acts as an emery board and
files the cats claws. (This would be great for Mac and Carrie.)

    Deb,

I think what you read is that it's being sponsored by the "Maine Coon
Cat Club". There will be a CONSIDERABLE amount of Maine coons there
(last year there were ~25 in the cat class alone!). But there will be
    other breeds there as well.

Len .. actually, the rex is my mother's cat. The orange cat who's
picture you saw, is Sweetie, CFF's best national alter for the
1990-1991 show season. He'll be there on Saturday only. My mother
will also have a cream tabby male named "Jackpot".

The Angora I'll have will NOT be Mondo .. (seems he's scared to death
of shows and told me two weeks ago by ripping my hand apart). The
turkish angora will be Kyra, the all white cat that had a BLAST at the
xmas party with that wonderful kitty teaser that you brought (her
absolute favorite type!). She's a doll to handle.

If you're looking for me, go to the raffle again. Mom and I are
running the same type of raffle as we've done in the past.

    Hope to see everyone there!

22.436Took the kids to the Sturbridge show ouch!!JAMVAX::BROWERMon Apr 04 1994 08:4117
I took my children to the show in Sturbridge. One thing I
neglected to tell them beforehand was that they shouldn't touch
unless an owner tells them it's ok to do so. That's a hard point
to get accross to kids that have 7 cats at home and 2 at their dads
apt. Admittedly there were a number of breeders that really got
into showing us their cats and seemed to appreciate having fellow cat
lovers oohhing and ahhing over their cats. I enjoyed myself but my kids
,especially my 13 year old, won't go to another show anytime soon.
I guess I can now say I've been intitiated and I feel like one of the
    unclean masses!!
On the plus side the Hopkington animal shelter had a table set
up outside the main entrance. I had a nice chat with the woman who as
she put it takes the overflow from the shelter to her own home. She had
2 Persians and 7 or 8 mixed breed cats.

22.437MAYES::MERRITTKitty CityMon Apr 04 1994 13:4813
Bob.. I had a similar experience at my first cat show!! My
expectation was I was going to meet all these wondeful
animal lovers...but that was not the case. My first mistake
was asking a "not so friendly" person what type of cat she
had...she growled at me! My second mistake was to say that
    I had rescued a Maine Coon look-a-like (I didn't even claim
he was a purebred)...but I also got my head bitten off by
a breeder. BUT...thank god for many folks in the file who
show cats...and also other wonderful people at the show which
    I have met...because if it wasn't for them...I don't think
I would have ever attended another show.

    "what a beautiful cat".

I don't think the breeders mean to hurt your feelings and you certainly
don't intend to hurt theirs either. I think what happens is that
breeders for many years have worked so hard at improving and locking in
the type, color or what have you that makes this breed genetically
different from others. When someone comes along and says that they
have a kitty "just like that at home", they become very upset. Of
course your kitty at home is not this same purebred. But everyone
needs to understand that certain pattern types or colors are available
in nature. Some are completely created by man. I don't think either
one should disregard the other, nor be hurt by it either.

Well I bought my 3rd Arubacat tree at the Worcester cat show for
    the kids.

This cat tree is smaller then my other two..but it is real
neat. On two posts..it has an open end barrell which is
covered with carpet and sits sideways. The barrell has a
window cut out so they can peak out of it. It also has a
taller post with a scoop (like a shovel) to sit on which
    is about window height!!

Well I brought it home and had about 8 cats fighting for
the positions!!!! It definitely has passed the kitty test!!!
Pretty soon I'm going to have more cat furniture then people
furniture...but in reality that is right because we have more
    cats then people!!!

uses tree trunks for the posts. I can't wait to see how the kids like
it. I won't be home when it arrives so I told Bob to remember how the

You'll laugh when you hear this one. A while back, someone donated
a whole bunch of those plastic film cannisters. We shook our
heads and tried to figure out what we could make with them. Well,
I put a few buttons in one, covered it with pompoms, added some
facial features, glued a string to one end, and came up with
something that looked like a cross between a bug and a bee - Sandy
    aptly named it a "Bugbee"!!

Well, we had a surplus of feathers and the feather teaser toys
weren't selling well, so we glued a few feathers to the Bugbee
and now have a new creation - the "Birdbee"!!

Other than that, we really haven't come up with anything new (sorry).
Summer is our relaxing season, and the craft meeting won't be meeting
for a while. During the time off, I'll have to get cracking and

The Sturbridge Host hotel is right on route 20 just west of the route
84 (or is it route 86 now?) intersection, on the right side if you are
heading west. The 84(86?) intersection with route 20 is, I think, one
exit south of the Mass Turnpike intersection.

The show this past weekend was a lot of fun. Pat Murphy was benched
next to me with her kitty and made all the finals. I think she even
got 6th Best HHP in show! Sandy Fraser came by and said hi too. It
    was very busy!
My friends cat had made it's Grand Premiership a few shows ago and she
hadn't celebrated yet, so I brought in a cake and she had some
    champagne.
Cally made three kitten finals: 3 AB, 6 SP and 8 SP. He behaved very
well and went through the show with ease.

The Hatfields showed up on Saturday and seemed to be having a good
time. Audrey held Timmy for a while, but the noise was bothering him.
Later that day I placed him with a friend of mine and all reports say
he is doing even better than expected!
All in all, a very nice show.

I'll do the best I can from memory, which means I don't have any street
    names to help you.

Get to Route 9 and Edgell Road in Framingham (you may have to look this
up on a map if you don't already know where I'm talking about)

If you're coming from the east, get off Route 9 at the Edgell road exit
and take a left at the light (from the middle lane; the left lane is
for making a U-turn back onto 9) into the right hand lane of the
overpass. Take an immediate right once you've crossed route 9. Follow
    this road (which crosses the eastbound exit ramp at a very sharp angle;
be careful) to the light at the bottom of the hill (you'll cross a single
track railroad track). At the light take a left. Follow this road; Keefe
Tech will be on your left just before the next major intersection with a
    light (Fountain Street?).

If you're coming from the west, you want to take a right onto the side
street off route 9 just before the railroad track grade crossing and
the eastbound Edgell Road exit. There is a firehouse on the westbound
(other) side near here. (If you miss the turn, just stay on 9 until you
can make a u turn, then follow the directions above for an approach from
the east; I don't think you can make the hard right turn (almost a u-turn)
off the Edgell Road exit ramp onto the road back down the hill to the
intersection noted above). Follow this street to the light/intersection.
    Go across the intersection; now you're on the road that Keefe Tech is on;
it will be on the left just before the next major intersection.

Bailey. I am trying to convince her to come out to Jo's show to
sell them (she needs to broaden her base) or minimally, send me
inventory and I'll sell them for her. It'll be difficult to do either

    Marlene,
No I didn't. I was running around soooooo much I barely had time
to talk with Cin. If you want to hear something funny...
I had seen a set of cage curtains Cin had in her booth from down
in NJ at the Qualifier. They had orchids all over them and at the
time I thought they would be real cool to have when I showed
my babies that I named afte orchids. I didn't say anything to her at
the time, but have asked her about these "orchid curtains" at several
shows and looked through every one of her bags. She had no idea what
print I could possibly be talking about.

This past weekend as I am running down the aisle past her booth, low
and behold, I see the orchid curtains again. I stopped dead in my
tracks. Turned to Cin and said in high excitation... "That's them!!!"
She then told me they were her own curtains! I must have seen them
hanging on her cage in her booth that time. I said "Cin, they have
orchids all over them!" She said she thought they were some strange
    colored daffodil 8^}

I made her an offer anyway.....

Take 101 North to 92. Can't remember the direction on 92 but I think

signs leading to the Expo Center.

Or, take 280 North to 92. Take 92 towards 101 (away from the hills).
Take the Delaware exit and follow the signs.

Sorry, they're not very explicit directions.

I'll be there on Sunday. My cat, Joey, is entered in the show. Jo
