393.0. "Upper respiratory Problem" by ISLNDS::URBAN () Mon Sep 21 1992 02:50

I looked under Upper_Respiratory but nothing seemed relevant. Please
    move this if appropriate.

I'm concerned because my new kitty, Lula, developed an upper
respiratory infection after I got her home from the shelter. She was
sneezing a bit and the first time I took her to the vet she didn't
sneeze and she seemed ok, so I just watched her. Well, her eyes
started running and she got sicker, so I brought her back to the vet
and they gave me clavamox. She took that, still sneezed, so they
refilled the prescription. After that, she was still sneezing so they
tried a different kind of antibiotic. But, now Linus got it, the poor
guy, and his eyes are red and swollen and running, so he was put on
Clavamox. Well, they've both been off the antibiotic, and Lula's
sneezing again and Linus' eyes are still red.

Does this thing take forever to go away or what? Seems to me like Lula
should be ok by now, don't you? I called the vet again, but they
haven't called me back yet. Should I get more antibiotics for them?
Anyone else ever had this lingering problem?

It's funny, but Lula is fine otherwise...she's playing and happy in her
new house. She torments my Linus. He doesn't seem really sick 'cause
he chases her around, but I can tell he's not himself. His big yellow
eyes just look sunken in. I feel bad for him, he has asthma on top of
this...but he hasn't been sneezing like Lula. This all seems strange
to me. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanx,

    Diana & Linus & Lula

Holly took three weeks to get over the respiratory infection she'd had
    at the shelter.

Remember that this is a virus, so the antibiotics only help to prevent
secondary infections from taking hold. They don't cure the virus; it
has to run it's course. And yes, it can take a good 2 to 3 weeks to
    finally clear.

My cats have had very good luck with Cefa in the past. It comes in
pill form (Cefatabs) or liquid (Cefadrops). It is stronger than
    Clavamox.

Another relatively new antibiotic that not many bacteria are resistant
to is Baytril. I am not sure if it is prescribed for URIs, but it is
worth asking your vet about. One of my cats was administered it for a
    bacterial infection.

Hope your babies are feeling better soon!

    Could it be allergies?

    Poor kitties.

The two kitties seem to be passing this virus back and forth to each
other. I would keep medicating them both for the same length of time
until they are both well, or separate them and medicate only the sick
one until it is well. Leaving them together allows them to just keep
    passing it around.

Once they get over this, you may want to boost their vaccines again.

Another tip that I have picked up...Gentocin eye drops work wonders
when you let a drop drip up the cat's nose. I cleared up Pee Man's URI
this way when we got home from Medina. Ask your vet and see if he has
    heard of this.

My vet doesn't want to give me any more medicine. He said to watch
them and see if they get worse, then bring them in again. Linus just
got his shots right when he was starting to get red eyes. They both
seem the same right now, Lula sneezes every once in a while and Linus
has red eyes, but they don't seem to be running.

Will they just get better with time, or will they get worse? I'm real
confused about this because I thought the antibiotics were just to get
rid of infection. So, they don't have infections, right? or is the
    red eyes an infection?

They are indoor by the way...would they need new shots anyway? what
    kind of shots?

    Thanx,

I learned the hard way about not vaccinating my indoor only kitties.
Mocha came down with a really nasty URI that took over 3 months
to get over. To top it off, she stopped eating and developed
hepatic lipidosis (a condition that affects the liver when their
weight drops quickly), and it was well over 3 months before she
    got back to normal.

Bottom line is - get them vaccinated even though they're indoor
only - it's not worth the risk.

Oh and another thing - make sure they're eating ok. At the first
sign of a depressed appetite, bring them back to the vets. That
can lead to more serious problems.

Good luck - hope your babies are back on the road to health really
    soon!

Pardon me, but my indoor only Beth was fighting for her little life 8
days ago because of URI. You can think twice about feline leukemia
shots, but NOT the usual yearly boosters.

You can bring germs into your house just from being around other cats
who are sick. Sick Beth is living proof....

393.8They get shots...ISLNDS::URBANFri Sep 25 1992 09:3814
Linus gets his regular shots every year...like I said, he just got them
before he got sick too. Lula had her shots and stuff while at the shelter
last Feb. some time. They both eat like little piglets... I'm keeping
a careful eye on both of them. Lula still sneezes every once in a
while. Poor thing, when she eats, she snorts cause her nose sounds
stuffed or something. It's not runny or anything...

Hopefully they will both get over this soon. This has been going on
since the beginning of August now...

    Thanx,
