876.0. "Allergies?" by OBSESS::RUDMAN () Thu Apr 20 1995 14:40

    My approx. 7 year old stray cat that I've had for 4 years has been
    having some problems.

    For about 8 months he's been excessively licking himself all over
    creating soar spots on his skin. He licks the hair away. I bring him
    to the vet about every 5-6 weeks for a depo shot. They say it may be
    allergies but offer no cure or what it might be from.

    Also he's lost 2 lbs. since last november. Seems okay but any
    suggestions would be appreciated.

    He also drinks a lot of water.

    Thanks in advance

    The weight loss plus water drinking makes me think he should have
    a test for diabetes or kidney disease. (My Sweetie has diabetes,
    and has volunteered to explain how to give shots if necessary :-)
    As to the allergies, I think sometimes food allergies or flea
    allergies can cause excessive licking. I'm a little surprised that
    your vet didn't try ruling out a food allergy by diet manipulation...

    p.s. I'm not sure what a depo shot it, but some steriods used
    to control the effects of allergic reactions can
    bring on diabetes in cats, as they did with my Sweetie.

876.3Plastic allergy?BPSOF::EGYEDPer aspera ad astraFri Apr 21 1995 10:1612
    A friend of mine had two times problems with her cat. The cat got wound
    at her mouth. It came out, it was because of somekinda plastic allergy:
    the cat was allergic to a small shelf made of plastic, and as he rubbed
    himself against (as cats do), got the allergic stuff. Try to check out
    WHAT it is the cat is allergic to and try to remove that thing from the
    cat's reach.

    Just an idea. Who knows, every info is useful.

    Wish you luck,

    Nat

    a depo shot is probably "Depo provera", which is like a mega dose of
    ovaban (female hormones). It is often given to stop agression or
    spraying. The problem with it (which is why most vets prefer to give
    ovaban pills) is that too much and the cat could instantly become
    diabetic.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    The vet did say something about diabetes or kidney problems, but
    could it really be from what they have been giving him for his
    allergies? Wow! I'll look into this.
876.6Cat with similar symptomsLJSRV1::MARXThu Apr 27 1995 17:2310
    I had a cat that displayed similar symptoms. She lost noticable weight
    and was going bald around her hind quarters. She groomed herself a
    lot. My vet immediately checked her thyroid and found it to be
    enlarged. She has been taking Tapazole for over two years now and the
    problem was brought under control. She gained back all of her weight
    and her fur has all grown back. Maybe you should check this
    possibility.
