61.0. "Cat pictures (GIF)" by SAC::MOXLEY () Fri Dec 06 1991 12:50

Hi,

I recently had access to a colour scanner, and Macintosh system. I scanned
some photographs of our 2 cats, and would like to share them.
I only feel happy about showing one at this stage, the other is a bit fuzzy
I'll do some more when I get some larger photographs, of better quality.

You'll need a colour workstation, and a display program called XLOADIMAGE or
XGIFROOT, pointers to which can be found in the notesfile:

		CSSE32::DW_EXAMPLES

Those of you familiar with using the worksation may already have these
utilities, which allow you to either view a .GIF file, or display it as a
cute background picture, instead of boring tiles!... Sooo here he is:

	BARYON::BORIS.GIF

BARYON:: is 41.68 or 42052 if you don't want to define it. Just copy him
over, and use the above program to display him!.

	Oh, he's *gorgeous*!  What a wonderful picture :^}

	I have a B&W .gif of three of our babies, if anyone wants to see
	it. It's at smurf::gifs:3cats.gif. Left to right, you'll see
	C.C., Jenny and Tas.

    Hey, is there anyway to get a hardcopy. I'd love a copy of the
    pix. I just have my vt340.

61.3SANDY::FRASERErr on a G StringTue Dec 10 1991 10:5912
	I used UTOX to convert the .GIF images to postscript format,
	and put two versions at smurf::sys$public:3cats*.ps. One is
	4000 blocks, and produces a 2x3 image. The other is over
	16,000 blocks, and will print out at approx. 5x7. It took
	an LN06 about 30 minutes to print the smaller one. An LPS40
	printed the larger one in about 20 minutes, fyi.

	If I have a chance later today, I'll convert the picture of
	Boris too.

    Sandy, just had a looks at 3CATS.GIF, your cats are *gorgeous* too!

    I've made another .GIF now, of our other cat Penny (Boris' sister),
    they are both British shorthairs from the same litter.

    Copied into smurf::sys$public:penny.gif
    Enjoy!!

    This one is smaller, I'm waiting for some large high quality photos we
    had done recently, by an animal artist who's doing their portait for
    Christmas.

    I'm also working on some postscript files, but our LPS40 just dies, so
    these will have to wait....

    Re: .0

    I tried to copy your .GIF file, but it gave me the message "file not
    found". Could you please give me the full file spec - node, disk,
    filename?

    Also, when displaying some of the others, I got the message -

       "3cats.gif is 313x202, 256 colors (of which 34 are used)"

    If I tried a qualifier like -colors 240, I got the message

       Usage: $1$dua9:[brown.xgifroot]xgifroot.exe;10 filename [[-display]
       display]

    Can anyone help me here?

    Thanks,

    Debbie
61.6SANDY::FRASERErr on a G StringTue Dec 31 1991 06:2117

    Hi Debbie - the message about the number of colors used is normal.
    It's just the utility telling you about the work it's doing. Since I
    didn't have access to a color scanner, 3cats.gif is a grayscale image -
    not really black and white, but many shades of gray.

    The Usage: message says that you've asked for a parameter that the
    utility doesn't understand - with .GIF files, you can change the size
    of the image, but not the colors.

    Btw, all the .GIF files mentioned here are located at SMURF::GIFS: and
    shouldn't need to be moved for a while.

    Hope this helps,

    Sandy

61.7Some more :-)SAC::MOXLEYTue Jan 21 1992 12:1913
    Sandy,

    I've tried to copy some new GIF's into SMURF::GIFS:, and get
    "insufficient privs"...there are 3 new ones, much larger than before,
    and much better quality, I've put them into:

    BARYON:: (41.68) or 42052

    BIG_BORIS.GIF;1     CROPPED_BORIS.GIF;1 PENNY.GIF;1

    Enjoy!

    Could you post downloading directions for the VMS-impaired? I used to
    know the command, but I've forgotten 8^(.

    This worked for me:

    copy bpsnat::FUSTI2.BMP;1 FUSTI2.BMP
    copy bpsnat::FUSTI1.BMP;1 FUSTI1.BMP

    Now how do I display them? Is BMP a Windows format?

61.11POWDML::HANGGELILittle Chamber of Tummy TimeThu Nov 30 1995 13:545

    On my PC, under "Control Panel", the "wallpaper" choices are .bmps.
    Therefore, I assume I can use Smokey as the background for my monitor.
    I'll let you know if it works 8^).

    Answering my own note: Yes, it works! I now have the option of using
    Smokey as the background for my monitor, and s/he has beautiful eyes!

    I just transferred the .bmps onto c:\windows and they showed up in the
    wallpaper choices.

    It looks like Len's kitties are in that directory also? All
    gorgeous pusses. Smokey is now the background on my
    office pc. For some reason, the background is a picture
    and a half of him; Maybe related to dragging the file
    from VMS to UNIX to Windows. or a fairly bizarre state
    my monitor has gotten into.

    Nat I need more info on Smokey, everyone thinks he's one of my four
    cats. I love the pictures and the idea of switching the poses is
    great! Could you provide a little bio on Smokey, I would love to
    impress others, "Oh sure, this cat is from ________, he's x yrs old,
    loves to play with ______."

    This sure gives a whole new meaning to this global village computer stuff!
    Thanks for sharing....now I'll go look for Len's kids.

61.22Zachary says thank youSHRMSG::DEVIrecycled stardustTue Jul 23 1996 15:3331
    I've conveyed all your words of praise to Zachary and he said to thank
    you all.

    Len - do you have Zach's mom? I know that Lisa Chamberlain in ZKO has
    his father Max. Max is an unbelievable fluff ball. Zach's coat is
    much more rough and prone to matting, no matter how much I brush him.

    Getting off topic of .gif files, but I was at a CFA cat show a couple
    of weeks ago and brought along some photos of Zach. Not having had a
    pure-bred before, I was curious how he stacked up against the Maine
    Coons being shown. I was astonished to not find another Maine Coon
    that had his coat, the shape of his face, or his coloring. One breeder
    said he was an 'old-style' Maine Coon and his coat was so full because
    he was neutered. Another breeder (from Maine) insisted that he
    couldn't be a pure-bred because he had too much persian-type features
    in him: rounded eyes, shaggy coat, etc.... I'm waiting to receive
    Zach's papers just to prove to this woman, if I ever see her again,
    that he is indeed a pure-bred.

    Len - I know that Max, his Dad is pure-bred since Lisa has Max's
    papers. Do you have Zachary's mom's papers? If so, then he has to be
    100% Maine Coon. Not that I really care if he's pure-bred or not, but
    I somehow felt as though I had to defend his honor.

    But - one thing was for sure - all the breeders to whom I showed his
    pictures were in agreement that Zachary is one gorgeous kitty....And to
    think I got him via the Digital notes conferences! (sigh)

    Thanks again for the compliments.
