260.0. "How about a "Feliners" T-shirt?" by BOOVX1::MANDILE (Life hand ya lemons? Make Lemonade!) Wed Apr 22 1992 14:38

I ordered a T-shirt from Just Cats (sometimes it's nice
to buy something and know that both you and the shelter
benefit! (: ) and it is a really pretty T. Burgundy
silkscreen on a good quality T of a cat curled up on
a windowsill, with the window designed with shutters
and ivy type plants with the name and address of the
shelter in the arch on top of the window. It really
    is a sharp looking design....

    Anyway, I was thinking.....

How about we Feliners design our own T-shirt? We could
make up a design and/or logo (Feliners do it with notes! (: )
and get them made up! In quantity, they would be under
$10 ea. I'm sure many Feliners have artistic talent, (-8
so together we should be able to design an awesome T!!!!

    What do you think?

suggested logo: a kitten sitting in front of a terminal and two other
kittens peering over it's shoulder at the screen.....

It would be nice if we had an iron-on patch available...then I could put
it on a long-sleeved T-shirt......

		Fun ideas!

And it HAS to say "Meower Power" on it! :^)

And, add to the logo suggested in .2...one kitty sitting ON the
    terminal looking down...

    Me, again!

I've just done a rough sketch of a logo (I'm no one's artist), and it
    is rather cute.

I honestly don't know if I can make it to the East Coast Feliner's
gathering tomorrow night, so if there is a Feliner here in MKO1 who
wants to take a peek at it, I'm located at MKO1-1/H13. Maybe a REAL
artist can use the idea, and elaborate on it.

I organized a t-shirt/sweatshirt thing out here (Ca) a couple of years
ago. The hard part/expensive part is getting the art work done. Once
you have that, getting tshirts/sweatshirts, etc. is relatively easy
as long as you have enough to order.

Maybe we could get sweatshirts or those very long tshirts that double
    as nighties too?

How did the Feliner badges that we had awhile back -- that's a really
    nice kind of drawing.

260.6BOOVX2::MANDILELife hand ya lemons? Make Lemonade!Wed Apr 22 1992 16:3214
Nothing says we can't have a choice between long or
short sleeves! I think, to keep it simple,
we had better stick with 1 color of T, though.

(BTW, I have connections in the T printing world!)

What color T and ink should we get?

I suggest: White T w/ burgundy or navy blue ink
Orchid T w/ dark purple ink
    	       Gray T w/ burgundy ink
(I love black T's, but not for this!)

So, would it be too intricate to have Xneko-kitty on the terminal screen? :-)

Orchid/purple sounds good to me. You usually can't find those colors at the
store.

And I vote for super-long with either short sleeves or choice of sleeves (since
summer is coming/here).

K.C., if you can get access to a workstation, maybe you can draw in (like
type in?) your sketch and send it over to me. I hope you can come yourself,
though...

    I think it's a great idea. I vote for orchid/purple. Dian's picture
idea sounds great, and I like Meower Power, also. Any chance of a
v-neck style? That would be good with the extra long for a night
    shirt.

260.9Ideas so far....BOOVX2::MANDILELife hand ya lemons? Make Lemonade!Wed Apr 22 1992 16:5913
    Suggestions so far:

    Reg T w/ short sleeves
    Reg T w/ long sleeves
    Reg crewneck Sweatshirt
    Long Nightshirt T w/ V neck

FYI: The more we vary the order, the more it costs to do the printing.
(T prices vs Sweatshirt prices vs nightshirt prices will vary)
T's are the least expensive to have done.

260.10What a great ideaSOLVIT::IVESWed Apr 22 1992 17:1514
Can I make a suggestion? Please remember not all of the feliners
are size 5-18 some of us are larger proportioned. Nothing I hate
worse than a tight T shirt.

I vote for a white T with Navy blue lettering. Maybe just a cats head
or silioutte (sp) would not be too expensive.

I will make Roberta keep me posted on your progress if nothing is done
    on this before I leave.

    Barbara

ps/long or short doesn't matter nor does the sleeve length. I will be
spending a lot of time at the beach this summer so could use either.

Hi...one of my fellow engineers runs a t-shirt business out of his home.
His prices are really good and I'm sure he'd put up with our requests for
unusually sizes/configurations/whatever. He's doing a job for me now and
his prices are very reasonable.

Shall I hit him up for quotes on prices????

260.13OXNARD::KOLLINGKaren/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca.Wed Apr 22 1992 18:1811
I don't think an orchid/purple combo will show the design very well.
I'd try a white design on a blue or navy shirt (ah, dark colors,
    another fav of us biggies.)

The restrictions on color/size of shirts themselves tend to be because they
buy the shirts in lumps before they print them up; our lump size was 3,
so we could get, like, 3 small grey, 3 small white, 6 medium grey, 3 large
    white, 6 Xlarge grey, etc.

Prices varied a lot, so it's worth getting > 1 quote.

260.14YOSMTE::CORDES_JASet Apt./Cat_Max=3..uh,I mean 4Wed Apr 22 1992 22:3912
I like the Gray/Burgundy combo the best but am pretty flexible about
the color as long as it isn't orange or yellow (there is no way that
I can wear either of those colors and not look like a paler than pale).

I prefer short sleeves but will deal with it if they come out as long
sleeves instead. I like loose fitting T's so I usually buy X-large
since they are prone to shrinking. The artwork sounds cute and I like
the idea of Meower Power being on the shirt too. You guys are sooo
    creative!

My preference would be for t-shirt, either short or long sleeves.
(not v-neck) The darker the color, the better. Black, navy blue,
hot pink, aqua, green, red.... but no pastels.

If the final design has a terminal, vaxstation, the word Digital or
anything tech weenie, count me out! If it has a bookitty or two and
isn't too cutsie, count me in. :^)

I'd be glad to make a few drawings or suggest ideas but will first need
to know if we are limited to a small design or just one color for the
design. It would be neat to do something tropical looking since summer
is coming. How about a cat wearing sunglasses? We could use Beth as
    the model!!!!
260.18MAGEE::MERRITTThu Apr 23 1992 09:078
Sounds good to me too!!!! Any design/color would be fine...but I like
mine real big!! (great to sleep in!!)

If we can't find an artist to draw...we can always look through
magazines and find a cute black/white picture and use that! (line
    drawing works great!!)

    When I order t-shirts for my students (I'm a part-time Jazzercise
instructor) they only come in X-tra large. The reason why is because
you can get an EXTREMELY colorful logo (any color T) for a reasonable
price. I pay about $6/t-shirt when I order in bulks of 24 shirts. My
sister works part-time for one of the advertising places (the ones that
specialize in neat things like balloons w/ your logo, pens w/ your
logo, etc) and that shirts are usually sold in bulks of 25+. So, I
think we can probably get EXCELLENT quotes/bids! And I'm putting in my
vote for: 1) x-large t-shirts (can use for coverup, night shirt,
    everyday wear; 2) neck doesn't matter; 3) colors don't matter, except I
don't care too much for yellow!

Will these shirts come in kitty sizes? My 4 would each like one if they
    do ;^)

NO yellow, NO neon colors, please. White, navy blue, purple, OK.

I like the idea of a dark (black, navy blue, etc.) line sketch
picture on white, or vice versa.

Size really doesn't seem to be a problem (being so small, I can wear
an X-large as a dress). Like was said earlier, that size can be used
as just about anything by just about anyone.

I really like this idea!!! :^)

Well, this idea seems to be progressing along well and I have a couple
    of requests.

    	- 100% cotton T's please (cotton/poly gives me a rash! :^)

    	- White w/blue, red, purple, whatever ink is my vote.

    	- Definalty X-large T's, great w/ leggins.

    	- I like the idea of the xneko kitty and Meower Power

         Good idea!

Any color but yellow, orange or pink is okay with me.

And I guess I'm in the minority - I usually wear Small, will
sometimes wear Medium, but feel like I'm in a burlap bag if I'm in a
large or x-large. Don't like my clothes *that* loose.

100% cotton or cotton/poly is okay with me.

T-shirts would be great. Any graphic artists among us please speak up.
We did shirts for the SCBF (Sacred Cat of Burma Fanciers) and did them

Count me in too, this is a great idea. I'm not fussy on color or style

    HI,
Yes, count me in too......as for sizes, I guess a medium would be
where I would land, or a small, depending on how small. As for color,
well, I hate the color orange, so wouldn't want that, but as for
getting a color that wouldn't show cat hair....I'm doomed! I've got
three black cats and a siamese.....they can manage to shed the proper
color hair to show on *anything*.....They've got it down to a science
    now! ;-)

XL t-shirts don't work as nighties unless they're extra long as well,
    for non-munchkins :-)

260.30MRSTAG::MTAGThu Apr 23 1992 15:0713
I like long sleeve t-shirts and I thought the idea of using either
Xneko or a cat looking at a computer were good. Or, maybe a cat
    playing with the mouse?

As for colors, it doesn't much matter to me. Navy blue is a pretty
safe color. I also prefer crew necks.

I'll volunteer my babies as models should you need them! Barney and
Gonezo, however, are so big themselves, that they could not fit on a
shirt together, let alone getting Benny into the picture too!

I don't think that showing cat hair is a major concern for most of us

    Wow!  I guess everyone likes the idea!  (: (: (;

Just to give everyone a general price - reg crewneck
short sleeve T's would be under $8 ea. Nightshirts
and crewneck sweatshirts would be under $12 ea. (prices shown
do not include the artwork/silkscreen charges, of course!)

As long as no one minds paying up front, this
will be no problem to do! The price each would have
to include the artwork charge, and a silkscreen
charge. Silkscreen charge is nominal, about $20
max! The artwork charge is the killer! Getting
camera ready artwork can be on the expensive side!

I have sent myself each reply, so I can compile
a list of who wants what.

How about a group of cats/kittens around and on
a terminal, and on the terminal screen the words
    "Meower Power" can be read?
Anything else we want in wording?

If anyone has a good line drawing of a terminal,
please send it to me. Also, if anyone see's any
cute line drawings of "generic" cats/kittens, please
pass them along, too! (Purrsonally, I think they should
all look like Korats, but that wouldn't be fair! (-; )
Or, if you have done a rough sketch, pass that along!

Having the artwork created shouldn't be any big deal.
I have connections in the graphic world, too!

BTW, I would see to it that anyone outside of the USA who
wanted some, got them shipped to them! If you are willing to

	Hi,

	Great T-shirt idea !!!!!
Not only UK is interested but Holland as well. Count me in for
a xx-large (as american sizes are smaller than european).
I prefer light blue or white because prints look much better
	on light background.

Our Maine Coon-club ordered last year sweat- and t-shirts with
a Maine Coon sitting on the waterfront (+ lighthouse) from
Carolyn Gruber (haven't the address with me).
She makes/sells nice prints on shirts, tops and bags
of different races (MC's, Birmans,Persians etc.).
If anyone would like her address, let me know.
Ask her for a leaflet with the stuff she's selling (prices,
	colours and sizes included).

    v-neck, crew is fine. Long-sleeve, short-sleeve, whatever.

Great Picture! Am I missing something though - there seems to be a bit
of shading to the left of the terminal. Using the PostScript previewer

No Lisa, you're not really missing anything. Actually, that's what
it's doing on the left side of the screen. The original picture I had

What a great idea! Count me in. I'm with Jan (.14): I like xtra large
T's, no yellow or orange, short- or long-sleeved (either is fine),
crew- or v-neck (doesn't matter). And I'm with Michele (.22) in voting
for 100% cotton tees. I think I would prefer xtra-long as well for
    wearing with leggins.

I really like to idea of Kitties around and on a computer terminal
(sorry Cheryl :^)) - since that's how we all "met" - with "Meower
Power" on the screen. How 'bout a variety of kitties/kitty-faces like
a Persian, a Maine Coon, a Scottish fold, and a shorthair (British or
American). [I'm not trying to play favorites here; just trying to show
a variety of different looking cats.]

Re: Shirt styles and colors -- if there are enough people interested,
couldn't we offer 2 or 3 different styles/colors (but all with the same
design). For instance, offer a choice of:

a Grey V-neck with burgundy ink.
a White crew-neck with royal blue ink.
-or-	a Royal blue xtra-long, long-sleeved with white ink.

notes on sizes: If we get an iron-on or stitch on patch with the logo on it,
we can put this on anysize, anycolor, anything we want...
as I like loose clothing and I am big - I need a 5x to be

    Hi All!

I've been out of notes for a few days fighting a deadline, but I'm
running something right now and figured I'd pop in with my nickel's
    worth! ;-)

I'm game for pretty much anything, but can't wear oranges and olives
etc.. I think the idea for iron on or whatever patch would be good too.
I'm on the large size myself, and if I get an extra large 100% cotton
t-shirt, and wash it, it ends up as a regular large, which is OK for
plain T-shirt wear, but not large enough to sleep in or wear with
leggins for me. I'd need at least a 3X T to accomplish this.

I'll settle for a regular T-shirt if the consensus goes that way
though. Actually I'll probably settle for several! ;-)

I think it should have a terminal too, since I AM a tech-weenie as
Cheryl so nicely puts it! ;-) Plus, as was said, that's really how we

The picture is cute but I would prefer a more realistic looking cat
if given a choice. Also, the little tell-tale rectangular logo needs
to be removed from the terminal. The only other thing I would suggest
is to move the Meower Power!! closed to the picture or the picture
closer to Meower Power. Seems like a little too much space between.

260.80MUTTON::BROWNThu Apr 30 1992 13:2218
Lori, print it to a postscript printer to view it.

In the kind of line drawing that I was picturing, the texture and
features of the cat would be drawn in too. With a cartoon cat, who has
very few features, we only have a couple of choices about how to
convert to a t-shirt picture. We can make the cat have a colored body,
and put him on a white shirt, or we can just do an outline of his body,
and then print him on any color t-shirt. His body color would then be
filled in with the color of the shirt.

If we stick with a line drawing, I think that there may be a
significant price savings, one color ink on one color of shirt. If we
make the picture mutli-color, we may be talking about lots more money.

I think that the picture is very cute. My only suggestion would be to
move the cat over a bit, so that his paw isn't hanging in the air. :')

    Re .89

    NO NO NO!

Each color put on the shirt requires an INDIVIDUAL silkscreen
to be made. 3 colors means 3 silkscreens at $20 ea = $60...

That would increase the individual cost of the T, as each person
buying a T would have to pay X plus a share of the silkscreen fee.

example: Say 60 persons want T's. We are quoted $5 per T plus silkscreen
charge. We want 3 colors, so that means each person pays $6 for the T.
$60 silkscreen charge divided by 60 person order = $1 more per person
    to cover the SC fee....

I just received a faxed design (don't know who sent it). I vote for
this design - one cat on top of a terminal, long-haired kitty next to
the terminal. I love it! Even if this isn't the final choice, I may
have to make my own t-shirt with this design! Of course, I'll still
want the "official" T as well.

Thank you! - to whoever sent me the design. I'll take it with me to
the cat show next weekend in San Jose if anybody wants to see it.

FYI- The preliminary design of SH cat curled up on terminal, with
a LH cat on the left w/ it's paw on the mouse, was drawn by me!

I took all the ideas, both drawn and written, and tried to incorporate
them into the preliminary drawing. The cats are generic, (e.g. they
don't look like a Siamese, or a Persian, or a Korat! (: etc. etc.)
    1 is just a LH & 1 is a SH!!!!

In order to get this goin':
There is no "choice" per say.......if there are certain things
about one of the drawings you like and/or dislike, let me know.
But, please, in order to move this along????????!!!!!!!!!!!

is a place we can be sure Cheryl will show up! ;-)

Only it's not in Marlboro! It's in Shrewsbury. Are we talking
someone's house, or a restaurant here? I live in Hudson, and would be
willing to have people over my place, if you don't mind being a little
cramped. I live in a mobile home, but it has a good sized living room
and kitchen dining room area, plus a good sized porch/room. My
mother-in-law goes to bed early, but she's deaf as a post when she
takes out her hearing aid, so noise would not be a problem.

Let me know if this is something people would like, and I'll make up

    Folks,

I was a lucky UK noter who managed to obtain one of these sweat-shirts
    thanks to a now ex-deccie.

Due to wearing it so much, mine is now very much the worse for
wear and I'd dearly like to replace it.

If all else fails, does anyone still have access to the art-work
which might allow me to have it re-printed over here - costs
    permitting ?

All ideas and suggestions gratefully recieved.

Mine is on the ropes also. Who has the artwork, anyone know? I had
some tshirts printed up for a Dec group several years ago, so I
more or less know the ropes and would handle getting reprints if we
can find the artwork and enough people wanted tshirts and or
sweatshirts. Or maybe also those long tshirts that are used as nightgowns.

Just an idea, if someone has the graphics on the computer. I see that Staples
sells (iron on) transfer paper to make iron on transfers from any graphic
printed by an ink jet printer. The sheets are about $1.50 each.

Some grubbing thru notes seems to indicate that Lynne Mandile handled
the order (okay, I didn't read all .229 replies, so maybe she
didn't handle the artwork :-) and that she left in about 1994. I'll
look thru my (now defunct) offline feliner's newsletter address

But plenty of people wear long nightshirts...men and women!!

And many people wear nothing at all, so maybe they should just get the artwork
tattooed instead???

Sorry...couldn't resist :-)

Some of us just wear our kitties. :-)
Knuffies convinced me her main nocturnal role is
as a tunny button warmer (or a hat) :-) and Lucy
does my feet and Belle does my chest...

>And many people wear nothing at all, so maybe they should just get the artwork

Well, I don't know about the artwork, but I've a portrait of Belle
free-hand tattooed on my right hip, done from a photo of her with
me pointing out finer points (like her eyes look a little greener
than in the photo). It took 2 hours, I nearly passed out twice
but I'm incredibly proud of it and it's a great portrait of her
and it got me filmed at the Phoenix festival about half a dozen
times last year :-) (not to mention the getting to know you
lines it makes for..)

I just wonder at the day she goes missing and having lost
all my photos I have to wander door to door asking if anyones
seen the cat from my leg.

If we can't find one of the original drawings, would it be
possible to copy/scan the picture from a shirt and then

    around ?

Not being a PC type, I don't know what is/isn't realisticaly

I just though that a contingency plan wouldn't be a bad idea
should a clean copy of the picture not be available.

I have my old shirt (threadbare) tucked away, if it comes to that. I
don't know about the scanning stuff. We have one defunct scanner
here but it's smaller than the design as I recall, so besides
cleaning up the image, it would require merging two images if
this is a typical scanner. Hopefully Holly has the file...

    Folks,

A collegue thinks that he might be able to scan in the image
from my shirt, tidy it up and produce a clean enough copy for
    the printers.

Apparently he's done this before, and is prepapred to lend us
some of his time to try again.

The draw back is that he's away on business shortly, so will be
unable to attempt anything until mid March.

Bearing in mind that I'm in the UK, shall I ask him to have a go ?

Is there anyone over in the US who would be prepared to pick
up the art-work and then arrange for shirts etc ?

I'm not being idle - it just appears to me that as there are more
US feliners interested than UK/Europeans it should be logistically
easier (and hopefully cheaper) this way.

stuff..work..and volunteering that I don't have the extra time
to take this on all by myself...BUT how about:

Ernie and I will work on enhancing the original design,
getting the prices (we should be able to get a decent price)
      ...printing the Tshirts.

It should be possible to scan from a shirt in good condition on a
flatbed scanner (the kind that can scan a full size sheet of paper
without "feeding" it into the device); many office supply places offer
flatbed scanning services for a modest fee.

Sandy, can we have sweatshirts also? Maybe one of the colors could
    be medium or dark blue
to hide those extra pounds :-) I'm also wondering, I've noticed that
some sweatshirts wear well, and others shrink and get scratchy in no
time - is that a function of 100% cotton vs cotton + poly maybe?

I have the offline feliners newsletter address list, so once we
decide on what will be available, I can send out a mailing to
that list. I'll ask them to reply either to me or to Holly, whichever
Holly prefers. So that will probably be a 2-3 week cycle with the

You're right about the cotton. I called Land's End, which makes

I can happily offer space on the kittyzone for it.

I for one have so many t-shirts and sweatshirts that I

and in fact was having a conversation about just this

    Folks,

My friend has scanned in the logo from my sweatshirt.
In his opinion it will need a lot of tidying up before
it can be used for a rerun.
What he is recommending - and offering to do - is re-draw
the artwork, based on the scanned image.

The result would be something very similar, but not
    identical.

We can then vote on whether or not the result is acceptable
    - or maybe someone with the right skills and tools can
    tweek it to meet suit.

How do other people feel about this ?

260.262No hard feelings...USCTR1::MERRITT_SKitty CityThu Apr 10 1997 11:4827
    My thoughts..

I have the original shirt still...I was going to ask my husband
to attempt to create the artwork from the shirt and touch it
up a bit. That way we won't get charged with the artwork fee.

Holly was going to get a listing of how many shirts/sweatshirts
we would need. Based on that info...I would have my husband
boss price what each shirt would cost us. (the more we order...
the less the price per shirt) Then if everyone agrees with
the cost...my husband would do the printing and we would deliver
the shirts to Holly. Holly then would be responsible for collecting
the money and delivering/mailing the shirts to everyone. I'm sure
the cost will be the price of the shirt..as well as mailing fees!

Now..my only issue is my husband is VERY busy at work right now...
and will do this in his spare time. So if anyone is in a real
hurry for the shirts...I have no problem letting them be responsible
for all of the above!! Believe me...it wouldn't hurt my feelings
at all because if you read my original note....I was hesitant to
take this on because we have very limited "free" time!!! (my
14 cats, my rescue work and my shelter work...take up all my
    spare time)

So just let me know if you want me to pursue this!!!
