998.0. "sandy bladder help" by CATMAX::SKALTSIS (Deb) Wed Apr 24 1996 17:45

Some of you might remember Pam Levine. She used to be a moderator of
this conference. Her cat Orson is havinga recurrent urinary problem
(sandy bladder with struvite crystals). She is lookin gfor any
information/advice any one could pass along, and if anyone knows that
name of a feline uroligist at Angell or Tufts, she would appreciate
that. You can either post something here (with the understanding that
I WILL FORWARD IT TO HER, she no longer works for DEC), or you may send
    her mail directly at "plevine@oec.com".

There are two mail messages following the formfeed.

    thanks,
    Deb

Subj:	Poor little Orson

He's got bloody pee and he peed on my clothes last week. I managed to get
a sample to the vet so and she wants him back on SD and Tribessin and
Prednisone. I'm not sure I'll be able to pull this off since he is so hard
to catch and is so terrified of being pilled. She and I discussed that he
might need to be operated on to remove the grit in his bladder, but she said
that that's not always a permanent solution since cats that produce grit
like he does can continue to do so. Now I'd have the surgery if it was
going to be a permanent solution since he's so neurotic and difficult to
treat. But if it's not a permanent solution, I don't know what to do. I
was wondering if any Feliners have mentioned this particular series of FUS
problems. I also wondered if you know of any Urology specialists for
kitties, like at Angell.

If this was Shamus or Daisy, I could catch them and treat them and it
wouldn't be a problem. But Orson is so easily spooked that I'm looking for
a treatment that requires the minimum intervention on my part since he's so
hard to catch and he gets stressed so easily.

Any and all help is appreciated.

So how are yours?

Pam

Subj:	RE: Poor little Orson

That would be great if you posted it to FELINE, and feel free to leave in my
particulars. The SD he is taking is Stone Diet. He won't eat the canned
stuff, so we're talking about the dry stuff which requires me quarantining
him all day with it, since the other cats tend to free feed.

Urine acidifiers won't work for him since his urine is too acid and produces
struvite crystals. He doesn't seem to have infections, but they want him to
take prednisone as an anti-inflammatory and tribrissin as an antibiotic
since the crystals cause him to bleed which means that he could get an
infection.

The other thing is, he's had this for at least a year without major
problems. I know that now looking back. At the time, I didn't know he had
it until he left me a bloody deposit on my quilt. I thought he was having
behavioral problems. Two months of the S/D cleared it up completely, but
it's been about 2-3 months now with no medication and it seems to have come
back.

Thanks,
Pam
