996.0. "Directions for making stud pants" by NETCAD::DREYER (Get me off this rollercoaster) Wed Apr 24 1996 10:42

Saw this on the Web and thought it might interest others. I did a
dir/title="stud pant*" but nothing came up.

Making Your Own Stud Pants
Making Your Own Stud Pants

Contributed by: David Thomas, david@micro.ti.com

I originally posted this to rec.pets.cats back in August '94. I imagine
that most readers found it completely absurd.

Stud pants are easy to make, but it's hard to send a sewing pattern
through email. I'll do the best I can with ASCII; just imagine smooth
curves where all the angles are.

They're made from a single piece of fabric, with a hole for the tail.
They have snaps at the corners, which go around his waist. All the
edges (including the tail hole) are hemmed with bias tape. Stretched
elastic (the WWWW on my diagram) is sewn to the inside with a
zig-zag stitch. I've shown the dimensions that we use for our
Bombays; you'll have to size it (particularly the waist) to fit your cat.
The distance between the snaps should be about 1/2 of his waist
measurement.

Be sure to use washable fabric. Denim and corduroy work well.
Bright colors are particularly cute. An applique on the top adds the
final touch (we use things appropriate to boys: football helmets,
racecars, frogs, "I Love Fishing", et cetera).

Before putting them on, we stick 1/2 a minipad (cut crosswise) to the
inside just below the tail hole. Slip the tail through the tail hole, put
the top part on his back, bring the bottom part up between his legs,
and snap the bottom snaps to the corresponding top snaps around his
waist. The first time he wears them he'll think he's paralyzed, but
he'll get used to them after one or two wearings.

Additional Suggestions from Laura Gilbreath:

On my 12 lb. Traditional Siamese I had to adjust as follows:
The total height is 12 1/2" rather than 10 1/2", and the width between
the snaps is 7 1/2" instead of 5 1/2". Distance from waist to middle of
tail hole is still 4".

Also, rather than using bias tape along all the edges, I just zig-zag
along them (like you would to keep them from ravelling). It doesn't
look as pretty, but it's a lot faster.

These are really great stud pants - easy to make, and easy to put on
the cat. My cat adjusted to them very easily, and doesn't spend all his
time trying to figure out how to get them off.

What on earth are 'Stud Pants?' Sounds kinky!

sort of like a diaper for spraying cats (typically worn by unneutered male
cats used in breeding programs). Jan, didn't your sister Jo make stud
pants for one of her boys? (I think I remember her saying how "macho"
    he looked in them :-)

Now that you mention it, Deb, I think she did. I need to get some
for Onyx. My only questions are do you leave them on him all the time
or what? What happens when they need to actually use the litter box?

Jan (thinking a nice blue pair would look kinda sexy on Onyx) :^)

well, since Jo was using them on her boys, she might be able to answer
that. If you find out, please tell the rest of us. By the way, how is Jo
    doing?

Well, I asked Jo how they went to the litterbox and she basically
her cats always managed to use the box, but then, if they can use
the box they can still spray. Basically, if they're on right they
shouldn't be able to use the box with them on. Guess I'm going to
have to invest in some Buspar for Onyx instead of stud pants. Bet
he'll be bugged. He likes to think he's a big studly boy.

Jo says to tell everyone she's doing okay. Feel free to contact me
if you want more than the reader's digest version of how she's doing.
    :^)
