985.0. "Mad Cow Disease" by AYOV22::KKEARY () Thu Mar 21 1996 07:26

At the moment in Britain we are being hit with information on Mad Cow
Disease (BSE). The government has just released information which
seems to prove a link between BSE and CJD (the human equivalent).

I am not concerned for myself but extremely worried about my two cats.

I feed them tinned food during the day and dried food at night. I vary
the tinned food so that they get a good variety of meat and fish but
would say they get beef or a combination of beef and something else
once a week. Floyd is 5 yrs and Elsa 3 yrs.

I have found out that there is a feline equivalent but not much about
    it. All forms are fatal.

Even although human's are dying from this the government is telling us
we shouldn't worry as it is the spinal cord, brain etc i.e. not parts
of the cow which are used for human consumption that are effected by
    this disease.

I am assuming that it is the parts of the cow that are not eaten by
human's that are put into cat and dog food. Maybe I am wrong in this
assumption but I have made the decision not to feed my cats any food
containing beef from now on. I am also going to speak to my vet about
this and see if I can get anymore information.

If anyone has more info. please post it here.

I looked around with AltaVista. There seem to be conflicting
claims and a suspicion that the British government is giving
the livestock industry too much of the benefit of the
doubt. Having zero faith in the credibility of any government,
if I lived in the UK and ate meat, I'd avoid beef and I'd avoid
feeding it to my pets. (Makes me glad I'm already a vegetarian.)

The most useful page seemed to be at
http://www.easynet.co.uk/ifst/hottop5.htm in terms of "what is it?"
However there were other pages reporting that spinal cords, etc. were
still getting thru the slaughter/meat preparation process.
