950.0. "Natural occurence?!" by SHRCTR::SCHILTON (Press any key..no,no,not that one!) Tue Nov 14 1995 10:00

    I saw a piece on the early morning television news about a kitten
    born in Denmark who is causing quite a stir. Verified by the local
    veterinarian to be "natural", the kitten is ...

    ....  GREEN !!!

Are we talking "green" like a tree, or "green" like a cat called "red"?
Maybe this cat is part plant!

    On my TV, which isn't the greatest anyway, the kitty looked a
    green/brown. But, definately *not* "mostly" brown; the green
    was obvious.

    He was cute ... like all kittens :-)

    From Today's Boston Globe;

    Green kitten puzzles Danes - Copenhagen, Denmark

    Something's green in Denmark. It's a kitten, much to the puzzlement of
    vets who have tried to wash out the cat's grass-green tint. Experts
    from the university hospital said the color also appears in the hair
    follicles. It could be a metabolism defect. The 2 month old kitten is
    all green except for a gray spot on the back. Samples of the kitten's
    hair follicles have been sent to Copenhagen's university hospital for
    testing.

    He looks brown with a distinct greenish cast. Permanent hair-coloring
    wouldn't wash out... cynicism lives :-)

    Saw this on a local news station here in Washington, DC. It was hard to
    tell the exact color, but there was definately a green tinge to the
    brown fur. I don't remember the specifics, but they did mention that
    neither of the parents are green - so I would assume from that they
    know who the parents are....

    It was a very cute kitten, but aren't they all?

950.11cobalt in the land?HELIX::SKALTSISDebThu Nov 30 1995 11:0710
    I saw this on a couple of the stations. I was at my vet's on Saturday
    and the receptionist asked me if I had heard about it. I said that I
    had, and I remembered as a kid hearing about somwthing similar in cows,
    although I didn't remember the details. My vet overheard the conversation
    and said that he was thinking the same thing. He said that when there
    is cobalt in the land that cows are grazing in (or if thier hay was
    grown in a pasture with rich cobalt deposits), the cow's coat can get a
    greeish blue tinge to it.
