924.0. "Aruba Cats Location" by FSTCAT::COMEFORD (There's coffee in that Nebula !) Mon Aug 14 1995 14:32

Well its time to replace my wife and I's worn out couch (a wedding
present from ~11 years ago). You may wonder what this has to do with
scratching posts (other than it is one of the defacto ones in the living
room:-) ). Our hope is that if we provide a decent new post for our
Gentlemen, they will leave the brandy new sofa alone (its leather which
also seems to slow cats down...). The ArubaCat ones are raved about. So
much so that finding anything about them is nigh impossible as the search
returns WAY to much stuff.

I live in North Andover, and they're in Haverhill (next town) allegedly.
However I don't see them either in the yellow pages OR in the white
pages. Do they have an onsite show room? Are they really in Haverhill?
Is there an upcoming cat show in the North Shore/ Southern NH area to
which we could go and try to get a special. Your aid will amuse
3 cats and greatly extend the life of a brand new sofa :-).

I think that they are in Plastow, N.H., but Arty did expand so he might
    have moved to Haverhill.

also, you find them in a lot of the pet stores in the area; They are
easily recognizable by the curved carpeted purches and the posts are
    wound in sisal rope.

P.S. The FIRM really enjoys both of their Arubacat trees, and Panther
won't share his Arubacat perch withanyone!

They live in Plaistow and have warehouse space in downtown Haverhill.
My 10 cats absolutely love theirs, it's the biggest one they make and
can hold 10 cats at a time...

They will make the unit with whatever color carpet you want, so it will
match your new sofa too, keep that mind.

    Definatley call them!

A 10-percher? How many poles? How high is it? Is it double the
    footprint of a 5 percher?

Don't buy one from a pet store if you can help it!! The cost
is unbelievable compared to the deal you can make with Arty at
    a cat show.

I got mine (6ft tall with 4 platforms and a barrel) for $200
at a cat show. In Shrewsbury's Pet Supply Depot the same model
    is something like $450 !!!

924.6I was suggesting the pet store for "showroom" purposesHELIX::SKALTSISDebTue Aug 15 1995 12:346
    RE: -1

true, but if he wants to see what they look like before calling and
ordering, a local pet store might make a good showroom.

the 10 catter, actually it is listed as holding 18 cats, but certainly
not 18 of my cats!, they are too big....anyway, it is almost as tall as
I am, at least 5'6" anyway, and has 4 large curved "benches" and a hut.
All the poles, 4, are covered in sisal.
yes, you get a better deal direct, he does have some at the warehouse,
but that is definatley not a showroom. he has all the carpet colors
    there too.
924.8They love it !!!MKOTS3::OFFENWed Aug 16 1995 13:387
I have one and my cats adore it. Diamond has *taken over* the top
perch and Silver has *confiscated* the barrel. His antics while in the
barrel have us rolling on the floor in hysterics. It's better than
    watching TV....

Your 10-catter sounds like my 6 catter (5 curved benches, 4 poles).
Arty and Billy hang out on the top perch, and the rest are 1 cat
perches (my boys are big but the problem is no-one will share).

question on these things - how stable are they ? I have 4 cats and
a really beat-up old chair in the room where they stay during the
day - when I can afford to, I'd love to get an Arubacat tree but
I'm wondering if they're stable enough for my rough-and-tumble-that's-
my-spot crowd ????? Will I need to somehow anchor it at the top to
a wall or window frame ??

924.11oh quiteDELNI::PROVENCHERWed Aug 16 1995 16:224
they are very stable......ahhh, hate to admit it, but I even
occassionally hang off of it when we all get playing, you know how it
is, and I am definately no small person......I would say they are
    indeed stable....

My cats are owners of 3 Arubacat trees. I have a huge six tier,
a three teir and a two tier. The cats LOVE them....and I have
had up to 7 cats in the big tree at once. They are VERY stable
and none of mine have ever fallen over. My little 3 year old
nephew loves to climb it too!!!

I personally would not recommend the barrel types because my
experience was not too good because within the first year
the rug around the barrel started to fray. My other two
trees are older, have had plenty of use...and I have no problems
    with the rugs.

I would highly recommend an Arubacat tree.

I'm wondering how people clean the carpet on their cat trees. I
find that vacuuming just isn't sufficient to prevent hair buildup.

924.15How about a lint brush?WMOENG::NEUVONENThu Aug 17 1995 14:367
I use a lint brush - the hand held kind w/the stiff velcro-y
material. It pulls all the cat hair off and also removes a lot
of the carpet lint that gathers.

It may take a while but it works great for me...

I throw towels on the perches, and throw the towels into the wash every
week or so. (You wouldn't believe the amount of fur that my washer/dryer
    lint screens pick up!)

924.17Beware of trees that are NOT Arubacat!MKOTS1::CASEFri Sep 22 1995 16:0013
I have the 10-cat perch (and only 1 female Tonkinese)...sometimes she
sits in the hut, other times she's on one of any 3 perches....they
all collect lots of fur, and we use a file of some sort that scrapes
all the fur off.....not sure what Rick calls it, but it's flat and
has lots of little teeth. It cleans better than anything else.
The Arubacat trees are extremely stable - Arty will demonstrate that
even a large dog leaping off the tree won't tip it over!

Be careful about pet stores that hold similar-looking cat trees and
try to pass them off as being the Arubacat tree. Unless one of Arty's
business cards is stapled to the bottom, it's NOT one of his cat trees!

    Lady Di loves her tree.....

I went down to the Cat show in Boxborough on Saturday (the 2nd).
Arty was there and we picked up a 1 barrel 1 perch job
(we have 3 cats, but 1 could care less about being up).
The cats love it both for sitting and scratching.

And it is incredibly stable (we have big boys, 13, 15 and 16
pounds respectively (and just big not fat yet :-) ). We have
large pieces of furniture that move more than this thing when
they jump off of it.

If you do run into Arty at a show definitely mention the notesfile
as where you heard about Arubacat, he gives a 10% discount
to Digital folk.

Thanks,
Keith (and Spike, Hobbes and Hurricane)
