820.0. "Best Friends Sanctuary" by ODIXIE::CARNELL () Thu Oct 20 1994 13:57

    I haven't been in this conference for a long long time (but I am
    registered).

    Has anyone heard about Best Friends Animal Sanctuary located in Utah?
    I just received mail and can sponsor a needy animal for only $15.00 per
    year. There is a very nice brochure explaining their organization but
    before I did anything I decided to check here.

820.1There are a lot of local shelters too.SALEM::SHAWThu Oct 20 1994 14:367

     I have found that a very small precentage of the money actually
     goes to the cause. As for myself, if I make any donations it is
     usualy to my local no-kill shelters, etc.

    I got one of those too. I held on to it, but am hesitant to send any
    money to a place I've never seen and don't know the financial details
    of. If I do return for a vaca. to that area soon, I will check it out,
    I'm sure, they make it sound like quite a place...

    That organization definitely rings a bell. If it is the one I am
    thinking of, I believe I read an article done on them in one of the Dog
    Magazines that's around. I think it was a woman or a couple of women
    who started the organization and the accompanying photo showed pretty
    stark surroundings, ie, desert. Anyways, it's a legit organization if
    that is indeed the one. However, I kind of agree with the others who
    have already written in here. When you are donating money, I
    really think you are better off sending it to a local no-kill shelter.
    That way you have a chance to see how your money is being used and you
    are more apt to hear if there are problems with the place, etc.
820.4Care of out Lord's animals, Inc?HELIX::SKALTSISDebThu Feb 16 1995 15:0312
    A man in my group just got a desprate, pleading letter from a shelter
    that he has contributed to in the past. "Care of our Lord's ANimals,
    Inc." in Alabama. It was federal expressed to him. In December they
    needed $20,000 for a baloon payment, now they still need $3700 or they
    may loose the land the shelter is on, and the 1500 animals would have
    no where to go.

    Did anyone else get something from these folks? He is wondering if they
    are legitimate, etc.
