704.0. "Bacteria from cats?" by PARITY::DENISE (And may the traffic be with you) Thu Feb 17 1994 16:31

Anyone see the article in the papers yesterday about the bacteria
cats supposedly carry which can weaken the immune systems of humans
    will already weak immune systems?
Depending on the paper, the article either sounded like outrageous
hype or a little more reasonable. One paper made it sound so bad,
I hope people don't go gaving away their cats......
It supposedly was done by a doctor in University of Cal. San
    Fransico.

What bugs me the most about those type articles, is they
never tell the whole story, and are aimed at scaring people/
shock tactics. I bet a lot of people paniced and dumped cats....

I haven't seen the article. I do know that toxoplasmosis can severly
affect people with lowered immune systems, ie. aids. This can be
worked around. If it is the same, it was also touted as being very
dangerous to pregnant women and most obgyn's told women to get rid of
their cat. BTW if you eat rare to raw meat, you have probably already
had it. It is self limiting and you probably wouldn't know you had it
    :')

RE: toxoplasmosis,

When I was pregnant, the doctor just told me not to change the litter,
because it's carried in the feces... so my husband had to do it, oh well!
But not to get rid of my cat!

BTW - this warning is similar to when my baby had her oral polio vaccine,
which is a live vaccine. The doctor told me that no one with lowered immunity
(including those with cancer on chemo...) should change the baby's diaper
for a certain amount of time (I think a few days to a week, don't remember
exactly).

This is not toxoplasmosis though, it is a separate bacteria I have
never heard of, I think it began with a B. I didn't save the article,
but I think I can get a hold of one and put the right name in.
But in the meantime hopefully people didn't panic about it.
