664.0. "Good idea...Cable Show" by ISLNDS::URBAN () Wed Nov 24 1993 09:44

    Last night I was channel flicking, and I came upon this show on Ch. 30
    which is a Local cable channel (Continental Cablevision). Anyway, the
    Methuen MSPCA had a show on with advice on how to train cats to scratch
    posts, use Softpaws, etc. and avoid declawing. The also had different
    cats/bunnies/dogs on that were up for adoption. I thought it was a
    great idea for other Shelters to maybe use to help with adoptions. I
    imagine they must have paid a fee for the air time, but I bet they get
    a lot of calls because of this. Just wanted to let others know about
    another option to get visibility...

664.1Framingham has done this also...STUDIO::COLAIANNII have PMS and a handgun ;-)Wed Nov 24 1993 10:0613
    This has also been done with the Framingham shelter for the local
    Framingham area Cable channel. One of our volunteers just happens to
    have her own show on cable every week!

    I think she has done a couple of shows at the shelter, and I believe
    every cat she has ever shown, has a new home! Not sure if it was the
    program or not, but they are all in homes! 8-)

    I don't get the Framingham station, so I never actually saw the
    program, but I heard it being taped at the shelter one night. Sounded
    good to me! ;-)

    It is a very good idea...and the Pat Brody Shelter is in the
    process of working with our local cable station to do a special
    by Christmas. (it will be shown on Channell 29 in the Fitchburg/
    Leominster area) I believe the first show will feature the
    shelter, our programs, and a few of our cats. The folks at
    the Cable company are hoping it goes over really well because
    they would like to start doing a regular series.

    I'd love to see it turn into an education program and get our vets
    involved...but also an adoption program to find our kitties new
    home. Gee...someday maybe we'll be featured on David Letterman!!!

664.3Good Luck!!ISLNDS::URBANWed Nov 24 1993 10:5611
    This is great... I think some people really get suckered in to get an
    animal after they see how sweet and beautiful they are on tv. It gives
    people a chance to see them and hear a bit about the situation they
    came from and whether or not they'd be good with children etc. And,
    because most people are too busy to make that special trip to the
    shelters, they can find a pet just by viewing. I really hope this
    helps all of the shelters finding homes for the cats more quickly.

    Good Luck!!!

664.4the kitty home shopping channelMR4DEC::PGLADDINGNoters do it with a 8-)Wed Nov 24 1993 11:567
    Sounds like "home shopping" for a kitty - maybe we can start our
    own home shopping network for kitties and crafts!!

    Could somebody tape the show mentioned in .2 for those of us who don't
    get Fitchburg/Leominster cable channels? I'll even provide a blank
    tape...

    No problem Len...I planned on taping it myself and I can let you
    borrow it and you can figure out how to copy the tape! (okay!!)

664.8How about other local acces channels?USCTR1::ESULLIVANMon Nov 29 1993 09:299

    Could the videos be available for other local channels...like HOlden?
    I don't know how this works. I'm pretty dumb in this area. But it
    seems to me like this type of information is educational and perhaps
    local channels would like to show a tape or two .... or a series?
    I would be willing to find out how to do this in Holden.

664.9MAYES::MERRITTKitty CityMon Nov 29 1993 12:1012
    Eleanor...I think it all depends on how competitive local access
    stations are. For example...we will be working with the Leominster
    Access station (CH 29)....but our video will not be shown on
    the Fitchburg Access Station (CH 36). Both these stations are
    with the same cable company. (go figure!!)

    The PB shelter originally wanted the "special" done before Thanksgiving...
    but the person that is coordinating this...just ran out of time.
    Hopefully we can get it done right after Christmas.
