659.0. "Lefty comes home." by MVDS00::FRASER (Mobius Loop; see other side) Sat Nov 20 1993 14:48

Lefty's home! We drove down to Leominster, had lunch at
Chopsticks and then headed over to see Eileen Mulcahy at
Central Animal Hospital. She removed Lefty's right leg
entirely and neutered him at the same time, but in spite of all
of that, Lefty purred, settled into the carrier and snoozed
most of the way home (Manchester, NH)

When we got home, I let him out of the carrier - he gronffed
some dry puppy food, sniffed and was sniffed by the other cats
with barely a hiss from anyone, ate some treats from my hand,
bopped the puppy on the nose and settled on the stairs for a
snooze. The interesting part is that CC (One eyed, kidney
damaged Bluepoint) instantly adopted him and is staying close
to him wherever he goes! :^)

        Welcome home Lefty.

Thanks folks! I have to say a few words about the people at
Central in Leominster - Eileen presented us with a card telling
us how much they would all miss Lefty and had taken the trouble
to cut out a pic of a row of Siamooses very similar to a pic we
had shown her when we first went to meet Lefty. Very nice,
caring people, especially Eileen and the blonde woman at the
desk (whose name I've forgotten - anyone help?) The practise
covered the operation costs (amputation to the shoulder socket
and the neutering) and we covered the shots).

Lefty is settling in very well - keeping himself to himself for
now but very responsive to Sandy and myself - I came in through
the slider last night after taking the pup out and Lefty
hurtled out of the bathroom where he'd been keeping Sandy
company and raced across to my feet with a squeak, for head
rubs and attention. He clears (with a single bound!) the
barrier we put across the doorway to keep the pup in the
kitchen area and makes a good three-point landing with no
problems and the only thing he's having difficulty with for now
is "covering-up" after he's used the litter-box. You can see
him trying to figure out how to balance himself to get some
scraping done - most frustrating for him; you can almost sense
        the "ghost limb" working.

He's a real good natured big mog and once his fur grows back
and the scar heals and he gets some practise in getting around,
especially jumping, he'll be just fine!

So happy to hear that Left made it through the surgery and was adopted
by such a caring and loving family.

I can personally attest to the wonderful people at Central Animal
Hospital - Lefty is off to a great start.

I believe the person you are referring to - from CAH - is Linda.
She is extremely knowledgeable and great to talk to when you have lots
of questions to be answered and the doctors are busy with patients.

My best wishes to you all!

I'm so happy that things worked out for you with Lefty. I was at
Central Animal Hospital last week with three of my "girls" and Linda
brought Lefty out so I could see him. I put the note in Feline for a
home for him and saw him before the leg was amputated. He looks great
and is really a handsome guy! I was amazed how well he was already
walking just a few days after losing his leg.

Thanks for giving him a loving home.

    Best wishes,

659.6Bad news.......MVDS00::BELFORTIPFYOWSWed Dec 15 1993 11:3829
I just got off the phone with Andy! He and Sandy took Lefty to their
vet today, not sure why or what gave them the idea to have him
checked..... I was too upset to ask!

Lefty has a mass in his abdomen. They aren't sure what it is. It
could be lesions from the accident, or ?????? The vet is going to call
the vet who took care of him after the accident and compare notes with
her. Most likely he will be going under the knife, again, to see what
is what. The vet doesn't feel they can get an accurate "look" with
    just xrays and/or ultrasound.

Andy and Sandy told him that if it came to surgery, do it! And if it
turned out to be a malignancy... to not let Lefty wake up. They feel
with everything Lefty has gone through, he would be better off this
way. I know Andy and Sandy VERY WELL, and know this was a very hard
decision for them to make.... but I too feel like they do. He has been
in a very loving home for a month, he knows how much he is loved; and
if the worse happens, he will go to Kitty Heaven knowing the love he
    had at the end!

I am keeping my fingers crossed, but at the moment it really does not
look too good for the poor little guy!!!

Andy or I will keep everyone posted on what happens! Send him/them
your good vibes, they need it right now!

    Hugs and pats,

    M-L

I have not heard from Andy yet today, Lefty went in this morning for
his surgery. They were going to try to schedule an ultrasound, but
with the holidays and all; even if they got it done chances are the
results wouldn't be in for a week or more, and why make him wait seeing
as he probably will have to have the surgery anyway. I told Andy to
send me a note as soon as he knows something. I am not really
concentrating on work too much. Lefty is such a nice boy... I hate to
think what might happen. I am trying to send nothing but possitive
    vibes his way!

I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything.

Looks like Lefty has some lives left after all - ruptured/split
spleen and the lining had healed around it. Our vet and Eileen
say it's incredible he just didn't bleed to death following the
accident. We should have him home tomorrow! Screen's blurry

He also called and left a message on my machine! Lefty is OK! Poor
    little guy!

I just want to thank everyone for sending him your good vibes... it
seems to have worked! Andy is out for the next 2 weeks, but I will be
trying to get over there to see Lefty once he settles in again!

    Thanks again,

That's great to hear. Scratch his head behind his ears and rub his

Thanks for the thoughts, prayers and the kind words, folks!

Lefty will be home tomorrow morning just after 8.00am (they
        open at 8.00am!) :^)

When I took him in this morning and handed him over to Wayne at
Northside Animal Hospital, I wondered if I'd see Lefty again
and I was thinking how cruel it would be for all Lefty has gone
through, found a home with warmth, food and love to go like
this. Tough to drive and walk with fingers, toes and eyes
        crossed.

He's used up a few of his lives - by rights he should have bled
to death when the car hit him. His spleen was ruptured into
three parts and his intestinal wall was torn. The mass turned
out to be the healing of the wall around the damaged spleen, so
Wayne sewed him up again and thinks he's going to be fine as is
with no need to operate further!

I'm looking forward to having him lollop around after me and
flomp at my feet for rubs, not to mention him grafting himself
to my lap whenever I sit down. :^)

        Andy (and Sandy&CC&Jenny&Taz&Spike&Beau&Smudge&Jaco_the_dawg)
who all wish you all the very best for the holidays and the New
        Year!

Glad to hear that Lefty is going to be okay. I was at Central Animal
Hospital this morning. They had just received a Christmas card from
Andy, Sandy and Lefty. Inside the card was a picture of Lefty and
the technician Cathy shared the photo with me. Handsome boy you have
there. Lefty really touched their hearts. Dr. Mulcahey was very
    happy to receive the photo.
    Happy holidays!

Lefty died last night from congestive heart failure.

He never really bounced back after the surgery and has slowly
been deteriorating, so we took him down to Central yesterday
(Saturday) and we just had a call from Dr. Moss telling us he
was gone and there was nothing more we could have done.

Lousy year so far, what with CC a couple of weeks ago and now
        Lefty. :*(

Thanks to all for your best wishes for Lefty, at least he knew

Poor guy! I really feel for you, too, having just gone through losing
a dearly loved kitty myself. The pain and heartache do subside with
time, although at first it doesn't seem like it ever could. Think
about the good times you had together, no matter how short they may
have been. Remember the love you shared.
