653.0. "I saw a dog this morning...." by WECARE::FALLON () Fri Nov 12 1993 09:59

    I know this doesn't belong here, but I saw a dead dog on the way in to
    work this morning. It was on the left side of the left lane near
    the overpass on route 3, just after the Tyngsboro exit. Looked like
    a medium size dog, blonde and white. Poor thing, it looked very
    pretty. So if you know of anyone who has lost an animal that looks
    like this.... You may want to tell them kindly. Not the best way to
    start your day. :'{

653.1Animal Control Officers Desperately NeededREFDV1::ESULLIVANFri Nov 12 1993 10:2324

    	Karen,

    		Does Tyngsboro have an Animal Control Officer? Perhaps
    a Feliner who lives in this town, or close to this town could call
    the police dept. to report this. Also, I would call the town hall,
    if you learn that this town DOES NOT HAVE ANY ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER.
    Many towns (my own town of HOlden, MA) do not have animal control
    officers. This is a shame. Citizens of towns that do not have an
    animal control officer need to voice their concerns to the town
    selectpersons. Also, write articles to your local newspaper voicing
    this concern. Only an informed and 'aware' public will vote the
    money desperately needed to aid animals in their community. The
    removal of animals killed on roads is only part of a town's reposi-
    bility to animals.

    	I am sorry that you had to see this. It is very upsetting, and
    I wonder how long the dog has been laying there.

    Eleanor,
    Those are very good suggestions. I would say tho, that the poor thing
    was recent. I think I would have noticed it yesterday. It really
    caught my eye because of the color and size. I hate seeing any dead
    animal on the road. I sometimes try to look to see what it was and
    then other times avert my eyes because it is just too much. Either
    way, I always say a little prayer, regardless of what the animal was.

    You may even have to call the State Police to report the animal. I
    remember once a couple years back I was coming down Rt. 2 between
    Leominster and Fitchburg and saw a dead dog on the road. It was pretty
    gross (I won't go into details). I was very upset by this and called
    both the Leominster and Fitchburg police stations and got the same
    answer from them - "Rt. 2 is a state highway and you'll have to call
    the State Police". They wouldn't do anything about it. I then called
    the State Police and there answer was, "Yup, we know about it. We'll
    get to it when we can". I wasn't pleased to say the least.

    The number of road kills lately has gotten very distressing. Just last
    week I saw two cat carcasses on the side of 495. What are cats doing
    on a six lane limited access interstate highway?

    <-- I see a tabby on the meridian strip of 495 going S at least
    2 times a week, on my way home from work. The kitty is hunting
    mousies or whatever....

653.6still there....WECARE::FALLONFri Nov 12 1993 13:317
    Well, now I feel like I am going to be sick. I went out at lunch and
    had to go down the highway and come back the same way. The poor dog is
    still there but it looks like it is now lying on it's other side. I
    don't know why, but if it was alive earlier, I can't forgive myself.
    It wasn't moving either time and I know it has/been moved because now
    it appears to be a Collie. I am going to try to call the town police.

    Some number of animals die for really odd reasons. It doesn't help
    the current feelings you are experiencing, but I am sorry for you, the
    dog, and the owners. My ex relocatted her cat to the apartment I set up
    for her, and at the first opportunity bolted out an open window (the
    cat, not my ex).
    We found Radish (The cat) the next day, beside RT 3, halfway back 'home'.
    It was one of the sadder loses of the breakup. My fav cat Pumpkin died
    on the way back home after one of my neighbors 'relocated' three of my
    cats last winter (in three different direction, over ten miles from
    home). They have since moved fortunately.
    Hopefully the dog has an owner who cares enough to keep looking
    until the matter is resolved, and the community has people who will
    care enough to notify the owner if possible.

    Just couldn't stop rambling,

653.8They were very nice...WECARE::FALLONMon Nov 15 1993 09:294
    Thank you all for your interest in this sad topic. I did call the
    police on Friday and they said they would send someone right out. They
    were very nice on the phone. The poor dog was not there today.
