633.0. "Abby is in the hospital" by TIMBER::AIKEY () Thu Oct 21 1993 08:59

We brought Abby to the hospital last night and it doesn't look good.

When we walked in the door they took one look at her and said that she
    was a sick kitty.

Dr.Moss came in and took her temp. It read 104 and going up....
Dr.Moss said that the shelter were we had picked her up had distemper
this summer. She also said that it is very hard for small kittens to
fight off any kind of infection.

Dr.Moss wanted to keep Abby and start treating her. She was straight
forward in telling us that she only had a 50% chance. Just before we
left she said that she would give her 48 hours.

Dr.Moss called the house last night around 8:00 and said that her white
count was really really low and that it looked like she had a viral
infection. She did not mention that she thought that she should be put
down. I am only hoping against hope that Abby is strong enough to
    fight this..

The last thing I said to Abby before I left is that you have to fight
this and come home. She just looked at me and put her paw on my hand.

It was rough leaving her that, but I have faith in Dr. Moss.

This was the first time that I meet her. I liked her very much. She
was kind to Abby and us, but at the same time she let us know what was
    what.

Again last night I said a little prayer for Abby. I am going to be
calling the hospital later to see how she is doing. I hope that I am
doing the right thing by her.

    Thanks for listening,

Joyce...you are doing the right thing and just keep good thoughts
on the 50% chance she will live. I've been there with my Dewey
(found in a junkyard) and there was only a slight chance he would
    survive...and he did!

Pray little Abby has the fight in her...and if she is anything like
the Abby she was named after...well you got that on your side!!

Gentle hugs and prayers...and please keep us posted.

Joyce - my heart goes out to you!

If your Abby is anything like my Abster (her new nickname) she'll
fight like hell to survive. And, she couldn't be in any better
hands than at Central Animal Hospital. Dr. Moss is the next best
thing to a "Saint" ... can't say enough about that wonderful person.

Not only will your Abby get good medical care - they will love her.
The entire staff will see to it that she is given the personal
attention she needs in order to survive.

My Abigail bonded to Dr. Moss. Times I would go in to visit her and
she'd scoff at me and go over and sit by Dr. Moss ... must say I
was a bit hurt but realized that the attention Dr. Moss was showing
Abby was just what she needed to survive.

My prayers are with you and keep in touch.

    Love

633.5Abby is holding her own......TIMBER::AIKEYThu Oct 21 1993 13:2818
I just called the hospital to see how Abby was doing and the person
that answered said just a minute. Made me a little nervous. I thought
for sure that they wanted to get the doctor so that she could tell me.

Dr.Moss came on the phone and said that Abby was holding her own. Her
fever is still high but she said that she wasn't to worried about that.

I asked Dr. Moss if there were a glimmer of hope and her reply was yes.

I told her that we would be by to see her tonight..

    Please lets keep praying....

And thanks for all of the prayers so far....

Joyce, making those phone calls can be so stressful - however, when you
get good news (like Dr. Moss gave you) you feel SO good.

Just knowing that she made it through the night and she is holding
her own ... is a VERY good sign.

Keep the good thoughts and if she is anything like her namesake,
    she will survive!

Please keep us posted and I'll be saying a prayer for her and will
stop in to see her (myself) tonight.

    Love

I called the hospital this afternoon to see how Abby was doing. I
didn't get to speak with one of the doctors. The recp. just said that
the chart said that there was no change. She is not eating.

It looks like it is going to be a very loooooooooong weekend..

I am trying to think positive thoughts.....

Oh Joyce ... I know just what you are going through.

Here is a something that might make you smile. There is a restaurant
near the hospital - Tweety's Chicken (somethingorother) ... nice guy
and his wife are the owners. Abigail LOVES chicken. So when she
wouldn't eat - I came up with the bright idea of stopping by the
place to pick up a roasted chicken breast and would bring it over
to the hospital to give Abigail for supper.

Well!! Dusty, the house cat became my fast and best friend.
While I stood at the desk, waiting for one of the girls to get
Abigail, Dusty would be licking the bag and I would relent and
start giving her some chicken. When they brought Abigail to
the visiting room I'd sit on the floor - eat a piece and she would
eat a TEENY piece, I'd eat a piece and so on. You know, competitive
eating? Ha! She didn't have much interest and/or appetite but I had
a nice (albeit) short supper - and I knew I tried.

During the 3 months that Abigail was in the hospital (collectively)
I stopped at Tweety's four different times. Never got the stuffing
or mashed potatoes, biscuit or gravy JUST chicken. Somehow I felt
a bit funny telling the owner I was going to the vets with the
chicken to feed my dying cat. Well, one night Abigail was literally
at death's door. I stopped by Tweety's - bought a chicken breast and
told the owner the whole story. He was si touched, he gave me HALF a
chicken and he seemed to melt as I proceeded to tell him the tale of
    Lupus kitty Abster.

Believe it or not (this is a LONG note) that night Abby didn't eat
much of the chicken. Dr. Moss said if she didn't stop the diarreah,
didn't start to eat and her temeperature didn't drop we would have to
put her down that Friday (this was a Tuesday night). Damned if the
next day her diarreah stopped, the fever went down, she started
eating and I brought her home that night.

Now - don't know if it was the chicken, the threats, God or what ...
but the rest is history. And, to make this an even NICER story,
the owner of Tweety's literally walked over to Central Animal Hospital
to ask about Abigail - he was concerned about her health.

The night before last - I went into the restaurant, got an order of
chicken and stuffing to go - and Abigail and I SHARED the dinner.
she loved EVERY bite and it was great having her try to find ways to
move my hand in order to get another piece.

So - if she does start nibbling on food, pick up a piece of Tweety's
    Chicken - it can't hurt!

    Marilyn

Just a little note to say thanks to all of you for your support and
    well wishes for Abby.

I went to see her last Friday and spent about 45 minutes with her. She
was purring and looked as if she was glad that I came.

Saturday morning I got a call from the hospital saying that Abby had
justed passed. I was so shocked.......

She is at peace now with Rocky and Tanya. I am sure that they will
    take good care of her...

Thank you for all of your prayers and support.

I really hate notes like this... it reminds me just how fragile our
    kids are!!!

Abby was one lucky kitten, for the length of time she was with you!

    Joyce,

Needless to say I am so sad to hear of Abby's passing.

I had all the hope in the world that she would survive that ordeal
but sometimes I guess God has other plans. I hear she was a lovely
    little thing ... so sad.

Having to experience a loss is bad enough - but three in a month
is devastating. Please accept my heartfelt sorrow and I'll give
Abigail - her namesake - a gentle kiss for her this evening.
