560.0. ""Cookie" has departed....."Peppurr" is here now.." by POWDML::MCDONOUGH () Thu Jul 01 1993 16:11

On Tuesday, June 22, our little FeLV+ sweetie, "Cookie", went to the
Big Catnip Patch to play in peace with all of the other little furballs
who've gone on ahead. Although we'll miss her a lot, we do know that
her life--while much shorter than we had hoped--was happy, secure and
    she was well loved..

On Sunday, June 27, we were 'acquired' by a 10-week-old feline terror
from the local Charlton MA. Kitty-Rescue & Placement. This little girl
is what I would describe as a "black tiger". She is totally black, but
if seen in the right lighting, she doe have hi-lite tiger stripes. I
don't know if these will blend into her overall fur as she ages, but I
hope not, since they make her sort of unique.

We went through the questioning period on naming her, but finally
have settled on a name that fits ehr in many ways. Being black, we
decided that it had to be something in that range, and since this
little hellion seems to be the "energizer-cat", her constant action had
to come in somewhere as well.. She Purrrrrs CONSTANTLY, but
    "motor-belly" just didn't seem appropriate...

Last night as I was walking through the garden when I hit the right
    name...and Julie agreed immediately...

So...this little black furfluff now isn't simply known as "sprite"
    and "Kitty"...she has a NAME!!

The new Feline addition to the clan is now known as "PEPPURR"!!
It's still pronounced "pepper", but the combining of the "Pep" she has
and the constant "Purring" made this a good name...

560.1"Love the name"MIMS::BANTEKAS_GThu Jul 01 1993 16:519
John, the stray we took in two years ago is black with those faint
tiger stripes seen only in very bright light. A few white hairs on his
chest (of course) and under each front paw and between rear legs (only
a few in each place). He has retained that faint tiger marking and I
love it. "Figaro or Figgie" is a character unmatched by any cat we
have had -- maybe those we rescue realize what we have done and repay
us in many different ways.... Enjoy your "furrfriends".

John ...so sorry to hear about Cookie! Her life might have been
cut short...but with your loving furry family...I'm sure she felt
she lived her lifetime in full!

Welcome to Peppurr...just love that name!!!

Our cat Merlin is also black with the faint tiger stripes. I figure
there must be some tiger in his heritage. Our other two cats are also
tigers, one orange and one gray, so we seem to run to that persuasion,
but they're all so different !

My cat Merlin is all grey with *very* faint tiger stripes; they're most
obvious on his tail, but if you look very closely in the right lighting
you can just barely make them out in his coat. It's like the black
panther or melanistic leopard - in the right lighting (and more easily
on some cats than others) you can see the leopard spots hidden amongst
    their sleek black coat.

Someone told me that it is because black cats are often bred from
silver tabbies. My own Rosie is the same. She is now 3 years old. The
markings faded as she grew older, but they're still there if you look
    carefully.
I believe that all "moggies" originate from the basic tabby cat, which
is why you get the markings on black and grey cats.
