557.0. "The Cornish Rex" by AYRPLN::TAYLOR (Zero to nuts in 4 seconds!) Thu Jun 24 1993 13:44

I can't believe that I haven't started a note on Cornish Rex cats!!
I went looking, but can't find one anywhere. I think there was one in
    Version 1, but not her.

Anway, the cornish rex cat originated in Cornwald England. They are
unique looking cats in that they have curly hair. All they have for a
coat is their under-down. There are no guardhairs. Their coat feels
    like soft cotton.

They are slender cats with a long "roman" nose, large ears set square
on top of the head. They come in any color (I've even seen a calico
    male rex!!!!).

As far as personalities go, while all cats are different, I've never
seen a rex with a bad personality. I've got two of them, and they are
    the sweetest cats I've seen.

If anyone else can add some info on rex cats, please feel free to do
    so!

Now, why did I write this note?? Because I have a birth announcement
    of course!!

My dear PIMA, a blue/cream, had four little kittens on Monday night!
Two blues, a cream, and I THINK a cream tabby. She had NO problem with
the delivery at all, and after they were all born, she proceeded to put
both paws around all four of them and pull them close to her. she's
    such a good mommy!!

I'm sure that I'll have kitten caper stories soon!

I LOVE Cornish Rex!!! My Scooter was a rex and the sweetest guy
around!! His personality was super and as for his hair - I always
thought his hair felt like fine silk.

The best part for me was that he wandered into my heart and home (from
a family who neglected him) and stayed there until the end of his days.

Yes, rex are truly a favorite of mine!!

There is also a Devon Rex (next county up from Cornwall).
I've heard that both Devon and Cornish Rex cats are supposed to be suitable
for people who are allergic to cats because of the very short hair. I don't
know if that's true or not.
557.10Stinky toes! But Cute!!!ISLNDS::FALLONMon Jun 28 1993 14:1618
The reason people say that the "Rex" is good for allergies, is because
they have such few hairs. With less to shed and lick it seems that
they produce less allergens. They will still bother some people tho.

Without having my books handy, I can say that the many forms of rex'
(Devon, Cornish and the Selkirk) are not interchangeable. The gene is
a mutant gene that makes the hair curl. When bred together it doesn't
work. The Selkirk is the newest kid on the block being origianlly
found in the midwest as a natural mutation (Montana I think).

They certainly are very gregarious cats, they use their paws like
little hands. My Rex (Smeadge) always touches water with his paw
before he drinks. We haven't figured out why yet, but he is the only
    one that needs to know!

One aspect of the rex is their "sneaker feet". Many owners wipe the
feet with a face cloth to keep them fresh smelling.

The Devon Rex, and the Cornish Rex are results of different mutations.
....if they are mated, the kittens have straight hair, not curly.
The Cornish Rex is the Same mutation as the German Rex, and are
	bred together in the US.

The Devon Rex has very much larger ears, a smaller face, and a
shorter nose. It also has a curlier and thinner coat.

Rexes shed their hair with less regularity then other cats, that,
combined with the thinner hair - especially with the Devon Rex -
means less problems for people with allergies.

Also, the Devon rex needs to be kept in a warm environment, as it
doesn't have a good enough coat for insulation - this also helps
alergy sufferers, as it seldom licks it's fur just to stay cool.

557.12CORNISH REX LOUD TALKER ?KAOOA::JGREGOIREMon Nov 28 1994 12:0427

Hello everyone it's been a long time since I wrote in here, I have
some questions to ask for those who knows a little bit about the
Cornish Rex. Recently I loss my 10 years old siamese cat and since
then my Abyssian is lonely so last week I was given a one year old
male cornish rex by a friend of mine who breed them, this little
guy was returned to him last week by his owner because he was
pissing in his suitcase, the Breeder told me it's because his owner
was always gone in long trip.

Anyway my problem is I have to return him to the owner because that
little guy meows very loudly even louder then my ex-siamese cat, he
meows loundly to be feed, to hbe held, to call my other cat, to the
walls. I feel very sad about this situation... And when I called the
breeder to tell him that I have to return the little guy to him the
breeder and letting know why is reply was ( well it depent of the
person ) What is that supposed to mean ??.

Anyway What I would like to know is are the Rex normally loud talkative
cats ? are female less loud ?

I really like the feeling and the look of that breed and would like to
get another one but if they are all that noisy I may not want to go for
    another breed 8-(.

I'm not a Cornish Rex breeder, and don't know anything about the
breed, but I have to ask the question - are you really giving
a cat up just because he meows loudly? With all the homeless cats
in the world, it seems a shame to give up one for that reason - but
to each his own I guess...

When you called your breeder friend, did you ask him if all
Cornish Rex's meowed that loudly? It would seem to me that he
would be the best source of information on that breed.

There is normal meow and there loud annoying MEOW! each I can't
beleive no one could put up with in anytime of the night and days and
yes I could giving up bacuase he meows loudly, I just lost my 10 years
old siamese and I am not ready to go trough many years of that again.

I did ask the breeder before accepting the cat if they were noisy cats
he said no, Now that I called him and told him that I can't keep him
anymore because of the loud meows he is telling me that it depends of
the person (what ever it supposed to mean) For me I can't beleive a
person would be able to live with loud MEOWS like that, well it
possible I did it for 10 years with my siamese. I just don't know who
beleive anymore now the breeder is telling me that the breed is
talkative and before I got him says they weren't.

I would like to get another Rex but female this time but if they are
like siamese I will have to give up on this breed.

I am a cornish rex breeder. Honestly I can tell you that it depends on
the CAT, not the person, whether the cat meows loudly. It depends on
the lines that the cat came from.

My mother has 5 rexes, each have their own personalities and their own
cries. Emmett will give you a loud cry if he's hungry, or if he just
wants to be cuddled. However, PIMA and Sassy have very small cries.
Yes, females are usually quieter than males, but not always.

So my answer would have to be yes, SOME rexes do have loud cries. My
suggestion would be to leave food out for him constantly, and give him
plenty of attention. Please, don't give him up just yet. This cat has
been bounced to three different homes now .. try not to put him through
    any more.

Also, is the cat neutered? If not, do it quickly. That will
definitely calm him down a lot, and he won't cry nearly as much. He
may be "looking for love" and trying to "call" the female.

If you have any other questions, please contact me offline. I don't
get in here as often as I used to .

I have a 1 yr old Devon Rex named Lycia. She is just a doll! At times
she meows loud, but has different "meows" for different wants. My
husband and I consider her to be quite vocal. We love it though.
    It's so comical!

Lycia used to meow at unbelievable decibles in the middle of the night
and pester my husband & I unrelentlessly. Needless to say a friend
recommended feeding her twice a day. I feed her in the morning and
when I go to bed. Problem solved! Maybe she's grown up? I'm sold
    anyway.

I thought Rex cats aren't supposed to be lap animals. When she wants
to, she is quite a lap cat!!

Re: allergies, My husband has light allergies to cats, but is not
allegic to our Rex. After growing up with cats, I love the fact
    there's no hair to vaccuum!

I would own more Rex's if it was in our budget!!

BTW: We own a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, Jenny, who is an indoor pet
that's litterboxed trained. We owned the pig first and were nervous
introducing a cat. I'm happy to say the cat "respects" the pig
and they are good friends! Where the pig goes Lycia is soon to follow.

557.18Questions on RexIVOSS1::SZAFIRSKI_LOIVF...I'm Very Fertile!Tue Mar 07 1995 17:5213
Just saw my first picture out of a calendar of these darling little
"Rex" cats. This truly looks like a face that you could fall in love
with! Since most of my kitties have found me and I have never owned
anything of one breed, all my darlings have been the mixed fur ball
    category....anyways, I was wondering how much out-of-pocket a little
    cutie like this costs.

Also, are there any things one should know about owning this type of
breed...any special care, other then tons of love, toys, and food!?!

Last ? .... any breeders on the West Coast ... California way?

    Hi Lori ..

My mother and I breed Cornish Rex cats. Unfortunately for you, we are
    on the east coast.

Our kittens go for $300 for a pet quality kitten. As for special care,
the only thing that I can really tell you is that our cats always seem
to be hungry. I'd suggest feeding them twice a day (morning and night)
and leaving dry food out for them.

I will tell you to be careful when you buy a rex on the west coast.
The cornish rex cats on the west coast have a reputation of being
somewhat mean. I'm not saying that all of them are, but I've been told
that some lines aren't nearly as lovable as the ones we have here.
Ours will basically purr you to death, that's about it.

Good luck, and let me know if there's anything I can help you with.

Lori, I would not let geography get in the way of purchasing a
quality, healthy, kitten from a reputable breeder. I live in
San Francisco and my next Exotic will undoubtedly come from the
cattery that my first one did, Cattyshack in Fitchburg, MA. It is
SO important to find a breeder that you can work with, feel comfortable
with, and learn from. It's worth the additional charges in transportation
to have a happy, healthy baby...

yeah .. Sweetie the shoulder rider .. I remember quite well your
reaction when you first touched sweetie's coat. I'm actually just
about two miles from Cindy's house.

FYI: A Cornish Rex's coat feels nothing like it looks. Most people
think that it would feel wiry .. but actually it's very soft, almost
    like cotton or crushed velvet.

557.24More "Rex" QuestionsIVOSS1::SZAFIRSKI_LOIVF...I'm Very Fertile!Wed Mar 08 1995 17:3531
    Holly,

    Got a couple more questions....

    1. Does this breed do okay with other breeds...being that my two
little adopted angels are of the mixed rat variety. One was
abandoned in a steel trash dumpster, the other was the only
survivor left from a littler under a neighbor's house. My
girls are 7 and 8 this April.

    2. Do you recommend getting a male, if I already have two girls.

    3. How do kitty's do traveling on planes at such a young age.

    4. Is this breed a real talkative breed. My Misty can carry on
a pretty decent conversation with the walls (doesn't bother me
at all). Misty looks to be part Russian Blue and Siamese.

I probably would be doing this in the future, maybe next year...not
really sure. I would love to have your address and number just for
future reference, since I really have no contacts at all on the
West Coast and wouldn't have the slightes idea where to go when the
    time is right.

As far as double feeds and dry food out during the day...that's the
way mine eat right now. Can't imagine feeding them any differently.
If I didn't I'm sure they would get vocal and let me know about it!

    Thx again,

Hmm.. let's see.. When my mother and I lived together, we had nine
cats. 5 Korats, 2 Cornish Rexes, a turkish angora, and the queen of
the house, Tabitha our shelter cat. yeah, I'd say they get along with
    other breeds. (-:

>> 2. Do you recommend getting a male, if I already have two girls.

I'd recommend getting a male, period. Our male cats seem to be much
friendlier and loving than the females. Although I love PIMA, our
first female, Sweetie is a love as well as Jackpot and Emmet.

>> 3. How do kitty's do traveling on planes at such a young age.

This one I honestly can't answer for you. I've never shipped at cat to
the west coast. It would be a kitten, so I'd probably give it a VERY
mild tranquelizer just so it doesn't get too stressed out on the trip.

This all depends on the cat. Generally, I'd say no, they're not too
talkative. But every once in a while you get one that won't shut up.
    (-:
