513.0. "Video Catnip?" by CALLME::MR_TOPAZ () Tue Mar 09 1993 13:18

Stanley loves to watch television; he'll sit inches from the
screen, following anything that moves, and every so often leaping
up to pounce on something or someone. I remember, vaguely,
hearing about something called `video catnip' -- a video
especially for cats who get off on watching the tube.

Does anyone know a shop that sells Video Catnip, either in eastern
New England (pref. So. N.H.) or by mail?

I have seen it at different vendor's booths at the shows but also at (I
think)Chelmsford Pet Supply on Summer Street near Marshalls. You can
also order it from the back of either CAT FANCY or CATS magazines.

Food for Pets in Amherst, NH, rents copies, and I believe they sell
them as well. Poppy was interested only in the birds and sat absolutely
motionless in front of the TV.

Thanks, sort of; found/bought the tape at Food 4 Pets yesterday.

The video is 25 minutes of some squirrels and birds in someone's
yard and porch. Stanley's eyes were _glued_ to the tube for the
full 25 minutes, interrupted only by occasional leaps at the
screen when a bird quickly flew into or out of view; this
morning, the cat demanded that the birds and squirrels reappear.
       (They did, of course.)

We fear that we've created a video addict.

513.7Video for Kitty?WEORG::STUARTWed Sep 29 1993 19:4510
Does anyone know where I can get a Cat Video? What I'm looking for is
a video that's made for the cat to watch. It has a lot of close-ups
    of birds and squirrels.

I live in Chelmsford, work in Nashua - so anywhere in those vicinities
-- or mail order would be good.

    Thanks,
    Ingrid
513.8Pet Supply Depot for VideosJURAN::BITTICKSThu Sep 30 1993 07:5711
I was at Pet Supply Depot in Shrewsbury last week. They had three
kittens in a large cage, which was pressed up against a tv. They were
playing the Cat Video for them and the kitties were going wild trying
to catch the mice and rats on the screen. As Pet Supply Depot is a
chain, with stores in Avon, Dedham,Natick,Saugus and Weymouth (I've got a
coupon in my wallet with that on it) there might be one near you.

I thought about getting one for the Hon. Col. Sebastian Moran, DROFFC,
but he's too busy stalking St.Bernards to watch tv.

There's a Pet Supply on 119 on the Littleton/Groton border, just by the
railway line. Is it good for kittens to sit watching TV all day?
Don't want to breed a race of Kouch Kitties!

Don't know if they stock it, but it's worth a phone call.

I usually get the same effect by turning on the nature channel! Kelsey
especially loves to watch TV. It is good to hear this video is now
available in stores... a few years back it was only orderable by mail.

513.12I'll have to check it out too....STUDIO::COLAIANNII have PMS and a handgun ;-)Thu Sep 30 1993 13:579
My Feendoonie watches the nature programs intently when there are birds
on it! Once in a while she even gets carried away and pounces at the
TV birds! Of course when she does and just slides to the floor, she
licks a paw, and looks at us and says, I knew it wasn't real, I just
    'felt' like it. ;-)

Maybe I should check ot this video next time I'm at PSD!

513.13"Cap Nip Video"TANRU::SYSTEMThu Sep 30 1993 15:249
In N.H. I found the video "Cap Nip Video" at Food For Pets on Rt. 101A
in Amherst. It comes with all kinds of warnings ... move everything
from the top and sides of your tv ....

Weedie, my 2 yr. old cat, trys to get at the birds and critters from
the top, sides and underneath. It's so funny to see him perched on
top of the tv looking up-side-down at the birds. Other times, the two
cats sit very nicely in front of the tv with their little heads moving in
unison ... left, right, left, right.

As I noted in 509.something-around-90, Rocky has recently become
addicted to TV. He's learned the sound of the on/off switch (and that
crackling sound the tube makes when it's turned on or off) so even if
he's in another room he'll come running if he thinks it's being turned
on (or off!). I'm not sure I dare buy him his own video... The
PSD in Shrewsbury is literally just up the road a piece.

Rocky, ever the leisure fellow, watches upside down from below, by
rolling over on his back to get "comfy". I feel like my parents,
warning him "you'll go blind sitting so close".

Well, Slick came downstairs yesterday evening, the only TV that he
bothered to watch, was the rolling credits, that had him mesmerised.

We had a smallish Sony color set with the vent on the top, just behind
the on/off and channel buttons. Miss Moffet used to turn the set on for
herself and sit over the vent for the warmth, she even changed the
channel so that we lost the cable channel usually right in the middle of
a program. When she found the cable box (with buttons on top) she also
learnt to turn that on and off as well, but that wasn't as satisfying as
the TV so she only did that when she was really mad at me.

Watch out for those nature shows. One of my fur faces sat and
watched (really watched - the entire show) a PBS special about
hummingbirds and the next day brought one home for me. "See Mom,
they aren't that fast after all".

Good thing the show wasn't about skunks or snakes!
