438.0. "Is she in heat?" by SX4GTO::WELLING () Thu Nov 12 1992 14:43

Hi!

I have a 10 month female kitty - Tigger - mostly indoor (gets to go outside
for about 2 hours every day). She's getting spayed this Friday.

She's had a behavioral problem for the past 3 days. In front of us, she urinated
on our bed, the next day urinated in the bath tub, and this morning urinated
on our laundry room floor.

She squats when she does this, not a spray, her litter box is clean, and since
I got her at 8 weeks old, has exclusively eaten Science Diet cat food. Also
she isn't straining when she does this.

She's an only child, and gets lots of attention from me and my husband, but is
alone during the day.

For the past week, she has demanded to go outside - I mean she *yells* at me
other than that she has acted normal for her.

Do you think she's in heat? If so and the vet wants to continue with her
surgery should I find a new vet? I don't have any prior experience with this
vet. I'm in a new area, and he was recommended to me.

Thanks!!
Laura

BTW - I'm keeping her inside now in case she's in heat.

Sounds like she is in heat.....some vets won't spay if the
cat is in heat, some will.

    Check with the vet.......

Then you touch her back, just below her tail, does she squat and push
her feet back?? That's a SURE sign that she's in heat!

From what I've heard, there's no problem with spaying a cat when she's
in heat. (which it does sound like she is). My vet just charged $5
more when the cat is in heat.

Both Kayleigh and Rosie were on heat when they were spayed. Rosie was
so quiet about it that I didn't even realise until after the Op.
It didn't do either of them any harm, although the vet did say that the
Op is a little more difficult when they are in heat.
With Kayleigh we were advised to either invite a Tom in for the evening
or to take her temperature to try and calm her down a bit. We opted for
    the latter.

Thanks for replying!

The vet didn't think Tigger was in heat. He checked her out for anything
medically wrong with her, and she was fine. So we came to the conclusion that
she was probably mad at us for something. I was away for 2 weeks (BTW - this
is why I missed the West Coast Feliners Dinner - hope you got my message
at the restaurant) so we think that this is why she was mad. Since I brought
her home from the vets from getting spayed she hasn't urinated again.
