412.0. "In search of a vet" by FROSTY::BENOIT () Fri Oct 09 1992 09:44

I'm becoming a "mom" today...I'm getting 2 kittens who will be
8 weeks old on Tuesday. They need to have their first check-up and
shots, or whatever (I'm new at this and very confused).

How do I go about finding a nice vet, who has very reasonable prices?
Suggestions would be VERY welcome and appreciated. I live in Nashua
and work in Merrimack, so I'd like a vet somewhere in the general area,
any suggestions out towards Milford (NH) or Hollis or Amherst would be
considered too since I will be moving out that way in the spring.

    thank you

Ferry Rd. Animal Hospital (Dr. Kaas/Dr. Porter), Nashua is excellent.

I gotta second Ferry Rd. Animal Hospital...they're wonderful. Dr Porter is
very special to me (I named one of my cats after her) and the staff is great
(I named another cat after one of them!). Both Dr. Kaas and Dr. Porter are
gentle, loving, and caring. Phone is 882-0087. They have Saturday hours
and late night (till 7:30) on Tuesday...

I think the closest vet to you would be the Amherst Animal Hospital on
101A. I've been taking my 4 cats there for almost 3 years now and
swear by them. All the vets are good but I use Dr. Roger Mitterling
exclusively. I know there are lots of other noters in this file who
    bring their cats there.

A bit far, but an excellent vet:

Dr. John Lindermuth, 23 Maple, Pepperell MA.

He really loves cats and has a collection of ginger strays that he has
spent hundreds of $ treating and bring back to health--and do they love
    him for it.
412.7DSSDEV::TPMARY::TAMIRDECforms RoadieWed Oct 14 1992 12:529
John was my very first vet when Honey was a baby. He's wonderful. At the
time, he was in the back woods of Pepperell and Honey got himself into quite
a state on the long ride. During Honey's first exam, John got down on the
floor and played with him. In fact, it's John's fault that Honey loves to
be rocked in a rocking chair.....

He's a very special vet!

I'm usually only a read-only Feliner, but I had to add my two cents
about John Lindermuth. He is a fantastic vet! He's helped my Si and me
(and my husband) through an on-going saga with FUS. (I plan to add a
note about that sometime in the future.)

Depending on where you live in Nashua, it's probably about a 30 minute
    drive.

412.10Need a vet near Milford NHNOVA::FREIWALDSic friatur crustum dulce!Tue Jan 12 1993 16:308

I moved to the Milford, NH area recently and it's time to get my
girls their annual checkup/shot series. I'm looking for a good
Caring vet. One of them also needs to get her teeth cleaned once a
year so reasonable dental and basic kitty maintenance prices are
    a plus.

I've been very pleased with Dr. Mitterling at Amherst Animal Hospital on
route 101a in Amherst. He loves kitties and is especially good with
crabby ones like my Poppy, who hates the vet. He cleaned her teeth the
last time we were there. We've been taking Poppy to him since we got
    her, almost 3 years ago.

412.12The Animal Hospital of Nashua gets my vote !TLE::ROBISONThu Feb 25 1993 11:4645
I too am usually a read only type of person, but I have to reply to
    this one note.

I live about 2 minutes from the Ferry Road Animal Hospital and have
brought my cat Max there a number of times since he joined our family
in Oct/Nov 92 for checkups and the like.

One night I had an emergency with my cat, he was very ill and could not
keep anything down. From what I understand this can be a big problem when a
fever comes along with it, which in his case it did !

A call to Ferry Road which was closed refered me to The Animal Hospital
of Nashua (Right off Rte 3 on Main Dunstable Rd near Howard Johnson's)
This was my first call to them, the receptionist was a delight and very
understanding, they took me as soon as I could get there !

Bottom line here, was that my cat had a high fever and was almost
dehidrated (sp) He was kept at the hospital for two nights with IV and
the like. Each day the Dr personally called me to give me an update on
    his condition..

I thought I would have to take a second mortgage on the house to pay
for the hospitalization, but it was extremely reasonable - it was
cheaper to house him there than at my house !!!! ;^) - I was also
given a couple of cans of special food for him when he came home at
    no additional charge !

There hours are super !! 9-9 Mon-Thurs, 9-6 Fri and Saturday hours
too.. Emergency service 24 hours a day.. For a working person with
crazy hours like I keep here - hours like this are a big help !!!!

I've never seen a vet's office so clean and friendly.. As you can
probably tell - they won me over and have become my first choice for
    my cat..

Feel free to give them a call (603) 880-3034 - they are more than happy
to give advice and a little help for those of you that are new pet
    owners..

    			Enjoy your cat's !!

I do not live in the area...so I have no recommendation for vets...
but I sure would consider Tufts University as my emergency hopsital.
Tufts is in Grafton and I consider it to be number ONE in my book!

    Hi,

The shelter I volunteer at uses Framingham Animal Hospital, which is
almost in Sudbury on Edgell road. It's only a 10 to 15 minute ride from
Marlboro, and they are very good with our shelter kitties! I was using
Marlboro Animal Hospital, but am going to switch to FAH myself. MAH was
just too expensive for me. They are good too, but my budget says go to
    FAH! ;-)

    Hope this helps!

I use the Hudson Animal Hospital...after searching several animal
hospitals in the Marlboro area. I find them to be the most reasonable
and most caring of the several I went to. They are right on Hudson
Main St. on Rt. 62...I believe it's High St. (right next to the
Catholic School). My vet is Dr. Peduzzi...he's really great. The last
time my cat got sick, he took her home with him for the weekend so she
wouldn't have to be cooped up in the cage all by herself all weekend.
Dr. Aldrich is nice too...and I don't really know Dr. Essington that
well. I recommended to my aunt that they take their dog there, and
they love Dr. Peduzzi now too.

    Good luck...

Heidi, I wouldn't suggest anybody BUT Central Animal Hospital. Dr.
Mulcahey and her staff are absolutely the best vets in the area, hands
down! I know of people from Worcester and Sutton who bring their
animals to Central Animal Hospital. They are THE best in the area.

As far as prices go, they have excellent prices as well.

Ditto on Central Animal Hospital. I usually go to Dr. Eileen
Mulcahy who REALLY cares about animals (as do the other vets
    there).

They were all VERY supportive when I had my 3-month crisis with
Mocha and did everything they could to help pull her through -
and they didn't charge an arm and a leg either.

I drive from Auburn to Central Animal Hospital and wouldn't let
anybody but Dr. Moss or Dr. Mulcahy touch my babies. They are terrific
with cats and very very good with giant breed dogs as well (they
even have facilities to weigh them and many places don't.)

412.21Twin City caresREFDV1::LUSTHugs - food for the soulTue Aug 10 1993 13:1232
Well, I have a good report on the Twin City animal hospital. The
little blind kitten came to my house on Sunday, after going to a vet
in the Marlboro area Friday. That vet had promounced it healthy and
worm-free, just somewhat malnourished due to having been in the wild
at such a young age. I was worried Sunday, because it seemed weaker
than I expected, and I was having trouble getting her to eat or
drink. By Monday noon, my daughter decided that she was in serious
trouble. Chris called Dr. Mulcahey and described the symptoms. Dr.
Mulcahey said because the kitten sounded so bad, and Twin City was
closer, to take her there, they were very good.

And they have been. The kitten has been fighting for her life, and
they have been wonderful. They have been with her almost constantly,
including throughout the night, as they said last night would be the
crisis. The diagnosis was *extremely* heavy concentrations of round-
worms - and emaciation and dehydration as a result. The vet also said
that the first vet should have caught them, and kept her then, as she
had to have been severely malnourished at that time. (Don't know the
name of the first vet - but I can find out - call for info if
    interested.)

As of now, Morgaine (*our* kitten - adoption note about to be deleted!)
is beginning to move around and eat - yesterday afternoon she was
comatose! They have started a slow-acting medicine to deworm her, as
it is gentler, and, while she's not out of the woods yet, her chances
    have improved significantly.

Twin City Animal Hospital has my vote. The people were friendly, and
interested. One person sounded relatively hostile after seeing the
kitten, but when informed that she was a rescue, warmed up immediately.

Any recommendations for a vet in the Belmont, MA area? We've recently
moved and need to have our male cat, Wizzee, neutered. My wife has
made an appointment at the Arlington Heights Animal Clinic, but I
wanted to check here before we bring him in.

We called a bunch of vets and the average neuter fee was $100 (required
check-up + neuter). Wizzee had a full check-up and shots just 2 months
ago. Arlington Heights charges $45 for the neuter and will skip the
check-up since he's had one so recently. But if there's someone really
good nearby, we'll pay the extra $$.

Thanks,

Larry

412.29The emergency clinic that makes a business out of it for this area is in ManchesterUHUH::TALCOTTThu Mar 21 1996 14:3511
Since she lives there, there's always emergency care nearby so if she finds a
vet she likes who doesn't do emergencies, she's still covered. We do 24*7
coverage so we tend to get the emergencies for many of the area vets...and the
Humane Assoc. ... and the Nashua Police... and ... ;-) In some areas, vets team
up and rotate who gets the emergencies on a rotating basis throughout the week.
We send emergencies up to the clinic every once in a while when we have a case
that's going to need more intense or specialized handling than we can provide at
night. The hardest of the hard still get referred to Tufts - for us at least. I
would guess the E. Clinic in Manchester does the same thing, though I'm not sure.

412.30Vet at Angel Memorial?CADSYS::RUBINDiana, HLO2-2/G13, 225-4534Tue Apr 16 1996 15:1010
Hi,

Has anyone used a vet at Angel Memorial Hospital in Boston for their cat? I'd like to
take my cat for a 2nd opinion about a tumor (Note 69.85) and would like a name instead
of just calling there without knowing who to ask for. Was wondering if anyone had used
someone there whom they liked a lot.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Diana,

Don't know if this will help you, I was at Angell Memorial this past Friday
with a sick bunny. We saw Dr. Connie Orcutt. She was wonderful! I know
she doesn't work exclusively on bunnies, if you don't get any other vet
names, ask if she sees cats. She spent almost 1/2 hour with us, examining
Kumquat, checking his records that were fax'd by my regular vet, answered
all of our questions, gave us all the options available and was honest in
her recommendation. She didn't rush us or try to talk us into unnecessary
tests. She even gave us tips on what to feed him. The biggest surprise
was the bill. They only charged us $40.

Good luck with your cat.

Regards,
Diane
