389.0. "will he survive??" by RANGER::MANGO () Wed Sep 16 1992 14:47

I need some advice or just a few calming words. I have a missing
indoor cat. He is fixed and declawed. Only went outdoors on a leash
and had few friends(One dog next door that would visit him).

To make a long story short... he managed to escape (get free) while
visiting away from home-approximately 70 miles away. I tried to find
him with no luck. I worry that he won't survive or be able to take
care of himself. I realize he's just a cat, but i feel somewhat
    responsible.

He did get free in a nice neihborhood.. lots of trees and open space.
But will he survive??? I need to hear a few reassuring stories.

    thanks,
    alex

    	Alex,

I have a good friend who had a neutered, declawed tom
who was allowed to roam outside. That cat, even without
his claws, would fling his arms about the necks of the
neighborhood dogs/cats (if he got into a disagreement
with any of them) and literally flip them down to the
ground. He would "bat" them about the head and shoulders
and used his back claws for furthur punishment. Most of
them didn't mess with him. He went up trees by using his
paws, arms and back claws. He also hunted. His teeth were
pretty useful. He was a tough old guy. Some of them figure
    	it out pretty well.

For finding your guy, have you got a photo? Can you have
a print shop in that area run up some flyers for you and
get them posted around? Ad in the paper?

    	Hoping you get him back.

You could ask your 70 miles away friends to leave flyers with their
neighbors (be sure they don't put them in the mailboxes, which is
illegal, but rather try to give them to the neightbors directly or
wedge them in screen doors, etc.)

I'm sorry to hear you've lost your cat. One of mine got out once and
was gone overnight, and I was really bummed out. Fortunately he found
his way back the next morning. I've heard some amazing stories of
survival, so don't give up hope.

Note #24 has some ideas for finding lost cats. There is a note (1811)
in the old Feline file (MUTTON::FELINE_V1) about a lost cat that was
found by its very determined owner. I think the "lost cat" note (4139)
in the old Feline file has some other stories of found cats.

How long has your cat been gone? Where did you lose him?

Good luck; I hope you get him back.

    Linda

Alex...have you posted notes around that say missing kitty...have
you contacted vets and shelters in that area...have you contacted
neighbors to keep there eyes open. I would post notes with your
name and number on everything that is standing still.
    Don't give up all hope!!

It is my opinion that there are many wonderful people in this world
that do take in stray cats....and hopefully your kitty has found
his way to one of their doorsteps!

    Kitty prayers for your baby!

thanks to all of you with the encouraging words. I won't give up or
    lose hope.

He's lost in N. Milford, NH.... I live in Billerica, MA.....

someone here mentioned that he may just surprize me and show up on my
door step.... now that would be a miracle!

Here's a little story that I hope will help to encourage you and keep the faith.

A few years ago, my best friend and her boyfriend moved 400 miles to Lake Tahoe
during the winter season to become "ski bums". They brought along his older,
indoor only, siamese cat. Two days after arriving in Tahoe his kitty got out
of the house. They looked and looked, but weren't able to find him.
Approximately two months later, after several snow storms, guess who showed up
on their front porch (in Tahoe). The kitty was thin, paws were very "weathered",
but in general, pretty good health.

Good luck to you!
Laura

Alex, if you could post a description of your cat here (please make it
as detailed as possible), those of us who volunteer at shelters in the
area could keep an eye out for him.

    thanks linda.. here goes:

    His name is Peppy..
and i have been told he's big, but i think he's average in size.

Gray with white on his chest.. a fluffy tail to match and green eyes.
He has grampa hairs growing from behind his ears that stick out...

You may see some fait brown coloring around his facial area.

he gets very excited when you ask "Wanna EAT!!" he'll usually
run around and then to the food bowl.

He answers to Peppy, Peppino and Peppoo...

Looks like a long haired cat but really insn't almost like a large
    squirrel.

I really wish i had made up a collar for him ( we learn the hard way)

    Thanks much everyone,
    alex

"just a cat"???

That's why you need a Notes file where people know there is no
such thing as "just a cat".

It is natural and essential that humans relate to their fellow
creatures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't sound like a match with your description of Peppy, but it's
worth a try. The following found kitty ad was in yesterday's Milford
    Cabinet.

Found near McDonald's. 5-month-old cat, black with gray stripes, 2
    	stitches on back. 603-672-0609.

Call the Cabinet, if you haven't already. They keep track of lost and
found pets in case anyone calls in. Their number is 603-673-3100.

Good luck. I hope you find Peppy.

"just a cat!?" Never! He's your best friend!

If it helps, I have 2 cats of my 10 that I adopted whom are
declawed, but were used to living outdoors before they came to live
with me. Chief kitty is a fabulous hunter, more than capable of taking
care of himself, he used to catch everything, Mitties has DANGEROUS
AND VIOLENT written on her vet sheet. Although she has no front or
back claws believe me you'd never know it. She also does it all.
TAke the advice of the replies here and do all you can.
    Hope you find him....

again many thanks... today i will head out that way with a box of
his favorite food. Oh and I didn't really mean itto sound like
Pep is expendable, he isn't. By 'just a cat', i was trying to relate
that to many that's what he is, but to me he was a good buddy.

I hope he stuck around in the area?

I really hate this 'me too' noting in a conference, and as a moderator
I would kill everyone just saying "yeah" as the 732nd person doing it,
but I just can't stop my joy over a happyend and have to cry out:
"Yeah! Great!" for the found Peppy.

Well Last night i drove out to Milford, NH to pick up Peppy. When I
    arrived
and was klnocking on the door I could see "peppy" moving around inside,
at this point I became excited to see him.... I entered the house and
to my surprise(my heart fell a thousand feet) it wasn't Pep at all..

So to make this long story a short one, Pep's where-a-bouts are still
    unknown.

Thanks to all of you who have given me so much support.

What will happen to the "found" cat ... has anyone shown any
    interest in claiming him?

Sending you good thoughts, don't give up hope yet. Maine Coon's

I was wondering if any of you living in the Milford/North Milford area
might be able to post a sign for me at your local supermarket? I have
been up that way looking for pep a few times now, but forgot the above.
I have a new ad in the cabinet going in the editorial section, i also
have my name and pep's description at all the animal hospitals i could
find as well as the Humane society. It's about and hour and and half
drive for me every time so I thought i'd take the liberty and ask.
