372.0. "help the animals/Florida hurricane" by OXNARD::KOLLING (Karen/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca.) Tue Sep 01 1992 14:36

    Contributions to help the efforts to help animal victims of the
    hurricane can be sent to the International Fund for Animal Welfare at
    the address below. Don't forget the DEC Matching Gift forms. There
    was a write up in today's San Jose Mercury News about the work the IFAW
    is doing in Florida.

    Perhaps we could use some or all of the funds for this quarters SLM
    contributions to be sent here? I am looking for suggestions for where
    the donations should go this time around and feel as though this one
    would be worthwhile. What do others think? Then again, we currently
    have $0 although I am aware that some people have mailed in a check.
    Thanks, Cheryl
372.2That's good but what about....ERLANG::FALLONKaren Fallon "Moonsta Cattery"Tue Sep 01 1992 15:142
    Cheryl, Please don't forget about the fund for indigent animals at
    Tufts, for the silver lining!

    Re: .2

    In the past I think the SLM has sometimes
    gone to more than one group a quarter,
    so maybe both could be done.

372.5SPEZKO::RAWDENCheryl Graeme RawdenTue Sep 01 1992 17:055
    Right, key words here are "some or all of the money". I think
    dispersing the contributions to a few groups per quarter would be the
    right thing to do. Surely we'll find many organizations that are
    appreciative of any kind of donation, small or large....but we have to
    keep an open mind and know that we can't help them all. :^(

    Because of Hurricane Andrew I feel the funds should go to help
    the animals in Florida. I saw a note in Canine that would just
    break your heart. They are finding over 500 dogs that no longer
    have homes...so you can imagine how many lost kitties there are.

372.7air lifting petsSTUDIO::PELUSOPAINTS; color your corralWed Sep 02 1992 09:119
    I heard on the radio (or was it the TV?) that they air lifted xxx
    number of lost cats and dogs to a NY Humane Society. In a way I think
    that it's great, but then I feel bad for all the people who are looking
    for a lost loved pet and might never find it again because it went to NY.

    Then I wonder if the NY humane society is no kill.....

    But I suppose the they will see an influx of adoptees due to human
    nature....
372.8I vote for Florida tooSTUDIO::COLAIANNIWed Sep 02 1992 09:2017
    Hi!

     I third?, fifth, seventh? the motion to help the Florida animals this
    quarter. I don't believe we have a very big budget this quarter, so I
    vote that the whole thing go to Florida this time.

     We have to get the donations to the fund back up folks! I know times
    are tough, but even a very small donation from many people adds up to
    a tidy sum. Then we will have enough to send donations to multiple
    organizations.

     Did that sound really preachy?! I'm sorry if it did. I hate when
    people do that to me! ;-)

    Love,

372.10North Shore Animal League is no-killRLAV::BARRETTIs it safe?Wed Sep 02 1992 14:339
    It is my understanding that the North Shore Animal League of NY, who
    is airlifting animals to NY, is indeed no-kill. They also donated
    $50,000 to a Humane Society somewhere around Miami for rebuilding.

    Delta Airlines is donating the transportation of the animals.

    Think I'll fly Delta next time I go anywhere...

    feeling a little *out of it* today ... can somebody explain this fund
    that y'all have? i'd like the money to go to FL as well.

    i'd like to donate as well. can somebody tell me where to send
    donations?

    	It's the Silver Lining Memorial Fund. Started by Nancy DC
    	and has been taken over by Cheryl Rawden. Money is collected
    	quarterly and then a recipient is chosen to receive that quarter's
    	donation. This is done in memory of pets who have died. Mostly
    	cats but we've had dogs, rabbits, and I think even a guinea pig
    	on the list.

    Don't forget to include a matching gift form from Digital. That way
    there, they get double the donation.
372.17Other animals affected....ERLANG::FALLONKaren Fallon "Moonsta Cattery"Fri Sep 04 1992 10:0915
    I watched the Today show this am and saw Jim Fowler. He was talking
    about the wild and endangered animals in Florida that were hurt by this
    storm also. The crocodile could have been hurt badly as the nestlings
    had only hatched two to three weeks ago. The reptiles are also in
    danger because the vegetation has been devestated and they are now open
    to predation, especially by hawks. The last two panthers from the
    sanctuary are dead. One was hit by a car and the other died from
    mercury poisoning. They aren't sure how many are left that have the
    radio collars, but feel that they were far enough away from the storm.
    It is only a matter of time before some sort of migration starts with
    various types of animals looking for proper shelter etc.

    Karen
    ps the croc's are also an endangered species ulike the alligator along
    with Indigo snakes.
372.18A horrible loss for all involved...ERLANG::FALLONKaren Fallon "Moonsta Cattery"Fri Sep 04 1992 12:008
    I was just informed that Larry Johnson (who is a photographer/breeder)
    who comes to shows (he does beautiful photos) lost not only his whole
    cattery but also his house. OUr club, Black Tie & Tails is planning to
    send a few hundred dollars to a shelter in the area who is providing
    assistance. Can anyone tell me about the matching forms, ie; I am a
    Dectag, the club will actually write the check. Is it possible for
    matching funds even?

372.19JUPITR::KAGNOMom to the Wrecking CrewFri Sep 04 1992 13:345
    Karen, Larry lost all the CATS? Was he not able to relocate them
    somewhere else (might be a stupid question here)? I have used him
    several times in the past for photography purposes and he always did
    great work. How awful for him!

372.20CFA has an address...ERLANG::FALLONKaren Fallon "Moonsta Cattery"Tue Sep 08 1992 14:245
    I received today from CFA an address that is being used for donations
    specifically for this. I will post it tomorrow. BTW at the show I
    attended this weekend they had a raffle to benefit the storm victims.
    I know I donated at least $12.00 or more!

    The Miami Metro Zoo suffered a number of millions of dollars of damage.
    The San Francisco zoo is collecting donations to help the zoo animals.
    I forgot to bring in the address but will do so tomorrow. p.s. It
    looks like the Miami zoo takes pretty good care of its animals; I saw
    a picture of a zoo human cradling a newborn something or other shortly
    after the storm, and there was a newborn giraffe on the news last
    night in what seemed to be spacious quarters. Also, from the amount of
    damage, my guess is the zoo has "nature environments" as opposed to
    horrible cages.
