283.0. "Neighbor cat outside..." by UNYEM::ETELMANS (Purple Mermaid) Tue May 19 1992 12:49

There is a beautiful orange, white, and brown kitty that has been
hanging around outside my apartment lately. S/he wears a collar, but I
haven't tried to get close enough to read it. The problem is, my two
indoor kitties aren't happy about this outsider invading their
territory. The other night, the visitor stayed outside the sliding
glass door so long that Woody started to paw at the glass.
Appartently the visitor was doing the same from the other side, only
there's a screen door there, which is now destroyed. Last night the
outside kitty climbed onto the ledge outside my window and sat there
looking in, which annoyed Sojou to no end. I was able to keep Woody
away, but I'm afraid that if this continues, someone will try to knock
out the screen in the window.

I assume that the visitor must live in the apartment complex, and
that's why it's around so much. Normally I wouldn't mind, but my boys
are obviously not happy about the visitor, and I don't want them trying
to get outside to meet this kitty.

Is there anything I can do to keep this cat from hanging around outside
my apartment? Would spraying vinegar or something else do any good?
I'm also afraid that if it's a boy, it might be spraying outside, and
that may be one reason my guys are so upset.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Sarah...try using just plain ice cold water in a squirt bottle...and
    if that don't work...try using a garden hose!! I wouldn't use the
vinigar on the cat...but maybe spraying the screen with that might keep
    him away!

Could you possible find out who the cat belongs to...and go talk to
your neighbor nicely about the benefits of fixing the cat!!

Sarah - want to borrow a blow-up size photo of Lea the vicious
Siamese to put up on your window sill? That should scare away any cat!
    :^)

Actually, we've had this problem as well with a neighbors' cat that
comes around on the back porch. Lea goes nuts if she's stuck indoors
when he comes around (I assume it's a he!) and it would be nice to have
a few means to discourage his presence! Lea had quite an abscess on
her tail one year ago and we are pretty certain it was from a fight
    with this big guy.

What happens if you close the curtains/blinds so they at least don't
    have eye contact?
283.3If it helps, I'll try it!UNYEM::ETELMANSPurple MermaidWed May 20 1992 12:0712
    Cheryl,

Unfortuantely, Sojou and Woody have both discovered (long ago) how to
get underneath the window shade and go behind the curtains so they can
see out. It's nice to see them sitting there, waiting for me when I
come home, but right now, I'd also like to be able to keep them out of
the window without having to board up the apartment.

    Maybe I'll borrow that photo...

    Thanks,
    Sarah

My neighbors cats do the same. The water mister is so far the best
bet. When my kitty goes out I leave the door cracked open for her so
that she may come in and out as she pleases. When the others wander in
for a snack of Spookys food I use the mister.

Now all they have to do is see my face in the door! But the Water is
    a safe and effective way.

    Good luck!

This is a very old note but I will see if I can get some advise. I
have a 9 year old male neutered cat that has started spraying in the
house. (first time ever) Come to find out there is at least one
    neighborhood stray that
sprays on the front screen door and step. Before I figured this out my
cat started spraying by the front and back doors. I have used the
cleaner recommended and that stopped the spraying there for awhile but
started the spraying else where in the house that is not very easy to
locate - you can smell it but can't always find it.

We have many outdoor cats in the neighborhood and I have only once
saw one paticular cat spraying on the front steps. However I come
home and can see a puddle daily. I have tried putting the enzyme
stuff on the steps but that has not helped.

What do I do to get my cat and the neighborhood cats to quit spraying?

    Suggestions please.

Make sure they are neutered first. If they aren't, neutering may
    decrease their need to spray.

If they are neutered, then you will have to try to make your house
unpleasant for them. It has been said that cats hate citrus, so I have
often put out grapefruit, and orange peels to discourage cats. Works
sometimes. You can also try some of those products like Repel that
they sell through garden shops and catalog companies.
