265.0. "Bacterial Skin Infection??" by AYRPLN::TAYLOR (Take some time to eat the flowers ...) Thu Apr 23 1992 17:08

    Silver is sick again!!!

Two weeks ago today, I brought her to the vets to be spayed. She
seemed to recover from the surgery with no problems at all. She even
    left her stitches alone!

Well, on Sunday, I notices some little bumps on her head. Monday the
vet was closed due to the holiday. I noticed that the bumps were
getting worse. Mostly on the inside and backs of her ears and on the
    top of her head.

I called the Dr. Mulcahey on tuesday and brought her in on tuesday
night. The vet seems to think that it is some kind of bacteria growth.
We can't figure out where she would have gotten it, except for maybe
when she was at the vets. The vet took a culture of the bumps and sent
it off to be analyzed. Meanwhile, she broke all of the bumps on her
ears and head and put some salve on them (something Silver was NOT
happy with. It seemed to hurt! She was growling and hissing and tried
    to bite me once!)

We were keeping Silver in the cattery with Pita and Tabitha.
The other two don't seem to have any bumps at all. We've taken her out
of the cattery and isolated her. The vet said that since it's most
likely a bacterial infection, that we need to keep her caged so that
the bacteria doesn't get into the furniture. We also must handle her
    with gloves.

The vet also gave us some pills for her AND Some salve. She hates
    both!!

What I'm wondering is if anyone else has had any experience with this?
Eileene said that she's never seen anything like this. What can I
expect?? How long with this take to clear up?

    thanks.

265.1Was I miserable.....OXNARD::KOLLINGKaren/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca.Thu Apr 23 1992 17:316
Gosh, Holly. This sounds like a skin thing I got from who-knows-where
when I was a little kid. It was really miserable until the doctor hit
on the correct antibiotic, and then it took several days to improve.
Probably not the same bacteria, but some of them are really a big
    annoyance.

If they cultured it, they will be able to tell you exactly what it is
in a few days, and they can also do antibiotic sensitivity tests on it
too, so they can be sure they are treating her with the right stuff.

Sounds a little bit like the skin problem that one of my girls has, but
hers is the symptom of hypothyroidism, not a bacterial infection. She
gets scabby bumps on her head, ears, and neck. She is on thyroid
medication, and that keeps the skin problem under control. Any thyroid
imbalance can affect the skin. If the culture doesn't grow, you might
ask the vet to do a TSH stimulation on her to see if it's a thyroid
    problem.

Only time I ran into a similar problem of bumps on one of my animals
was when she was bedded in wood shavings she was highly allergic to.
She looked like a black/white crocodile (my horse).

Any news on what this problem was with Silver? Has it gone away?

They HAVE gone away. It turned out to be some sort of bacterial infection.
the vet put her on an antibiotic as well as a cream and the problem
cleared up.

thanks for asking, Jo. The vet told me the specific name of the bacteria,
but I can't remember what it was.

Was really made me happy about this is that the vet didn't charge me for
anything but the medicines to treat it with since it turns out that she
did get the infection when she was there being spayed.
