243.0. "Mood swings, friendly one day, aloof the next" by CSSE32::RAWDEN (Cheryl Graeme Rawden) Fri Apr 03 1992 10:03

Do cats have mood swings? For a few weeks there, Chubs was not overly
friendly (like he usually is). We just realized the last few nights
that he's back to making his mirps and chirps and he follows us around
the house and jumps on our lap wherever we go. I really noticed his
"back to normal" behavior when he recently started hogging the bed
again. :^) Today at 5AM Chubs was licking my hand and wanted
affection. How come he wasn't like this a few weeks ago? I am
wondering if perhaps he wasn't feeling well and we just didn't notice,
or if he suffers from mood swings of some type. (if Chubs were female,
    I could understand :^)

Do cats go through phases where they just want to be left alone? If
so, how long do these phases last? I understand that some cats like to
be aloof but this seemed to be very out of character for the Chubs we
    know.

My darlin' Rico goes thru "mood swings", especially when "warmer"
weather hits. Sometimes he can't get into my lap fast enough, and
others he will ignore me for days.

Well...I do know men that go through mood swings too!

I think it all depends on the cat. I have a couple of cuddlers
who I know something is immediately wrong if they are not on my
lap the minute I sit down. But then again I have Poco(female),
Angus (male) who only cuddle when they want to!! Some days they
are lovey dovey and other days humans are totally ignored.

Kelsey is very moody. One minute he's purring and making bread next to
you on the couch, the next he's whining when you try to pet him or pick
him up and hug him. I think the correct term here is spoiled brat!!

Right now he has spring fever (wants me to get out his leash and walk
him), so he's stomping around the house screaming his head off at the
    doors.

Stitch definitely has them - I swear sometimes he acts like a man going
    through mid life crisis.

Missy Hana not only has moods...she is prone to nag me when she feels put
out about something - she follows me around the house, hollering, and not
eating or anything - she just wants to tell me what a pain in the butt I
am. Once she has informed me of my utter, miserable, failure as a cat-pet,
she will then march off to nap...and I'd better NOT disturb her. If I do
bother her before she is ready to try training me again, I am soundly hissed
at for my efforts. She makes it very clear that SHE decides when I am forgiven.
At other times, she is a sweetheart, talking and chirping happily to me as
we do our work around the house - or even hanging out with me while I read
or do a crossword.

My friend, Rene, thinks Hana is a miserable mean cat -- I think she has
a distinctive personality...it's all in the way you look at it, I guess.

Biff has raised mood swings to an art form....one minute, he's all lovey dovey
and the next minute he wants to kill--especially Julie. Last night, Biff
was snuggled on top of Honey (poor ever-tolerant Honey!), purring away, getting
his ears washed. Minutes later, he was trying to kill Julie, who had the nerve
to be on the same planet as Biff. Later that night, Biff was washing Beth's
ears; the next thing I hear is Beth screaming cause Biff bit Beth (try saying
that 5 times fast!!!). I've never wanted to punch a cat in the face before,
but lately........

Lately Mips and Belle have been going at it as well. I don't
know what's got into them. I've tried explaining to Mips that
when her sister hisses at her it does *not* mean, "come on over
and beat me up some more", but she doesn't believe me....kids.
