201.0. "rotten con game about lost pets" by OXNARD::KOLLING (Karen/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca.) Mon Feb 24 1992 16:57

The local news had a bit on a horrid con game that's apparently
    happening in various areas:

    Pet is lost.
People put lost pet ads in newspapers, posters up.
Someone calls and says "I'm a driver for <foo> moving company, or
somesuch. I found your pet in the back of my van. please wire $$
to <cityname> so I can ship him/her back to you."
People wire money, drive to airport, no pet.

The recommendation was to deal thru a local animal shelter in
the remote city to avoid this.

Or have the "finder" send the cat or dog back to you COD. Most of the
airlines will allow this, as I ship kittens and cats back and forth COD
    all the time.

Another way to stop it is to *call* the office of that local carrier
and ask if they have a driver by the name of ......

    Re: .2

I think that might not work. I remember from when I moved, even "major"
carriers like Mayflower use a lot of contract workers. Some driver that
the local office doesn't know brings a truckload of stuff into town, and
usually picks up another order there to take some place far away. So, the
office would probably be able to tell you "Mrs. Foo's furniture is on
its way here" but perhaps not have a clue about the driver's name or
    ever have seen him before.

Although, it couldn't hurt to try that.
