112.0. "North Shore Animal League?" by TEGAN::LACORTI () Thu Jan 02 1992 09:02

I got this sweepstakes like letter in the mail from the North Shore
Animal League. You can win this and that and all they ask for is a
donation to help save cats, dogs, etc.
Is this organization legitimate? Has anyone found out what they
do? I would like to know if they are using the money as they claim
    (to save animals lives).

    Hi,

Does anyone know anything about this organization?

(I ought to remember but I don't)....but isn't this the one in
    Salem?

Back years ago I went to one (pretty sure if was this one) in Salem.
They did some severe screening on me - I had to meet with them for
over an hour. Paid my donation and walked out with my one year old
female - all shots, etc. included.

Unfortunately, when I got this (what I thought to be a lovey furface)
home, it turned wild. As the shelter was very attamet about not
being able to return the pet, I was forced to bring it to another
shelter. One month of being scratched to shreds and bitten and I
realized I could not handle this cat. I was really upset that there
was nothing I could do for this poor baby.

But back to the shelter, they were almost intimidating when I went in
to get my kitty - the folks weren't all that friendly, but the place
was swamped with pets and I'm sure they're just trying their best. I
know that this shelter does not kill their animals which made me want
to go there and help them out.

And a short note to add. Last night on the news I heard that because
    of
the recession many folks are forced to give up their pets as they
cannot afford them anymore, and that the shelters are becoming so over-
stocked that almost 85% of the animals are being killed. Really sad
    statistic.
