107.0. "Neighbors need free or cheap medical supplies and services..." by MARX::MAGOON () Mon Dec 30 1991 10:59

I live in Nashua, NH.

I have some neighbors who have just acquired two beautiful
young strays which are both female and may be pregnant.
One has ear mites and pinworms. They both seem to be in
good health otherwise.

These people love cats but can't afford to pay for medical
services or medicine unless they're really cheap, and then probably
only in installments.

Anyone know of any veterinarians and/or organizations
which might help to enable these people to keep the cats?

					Thanks,
					Larry

Hmmmm....I guess I'd contact the Humane Society in Nashua first. They may
have resources, or access to funds, that would help out. Also, I think
that any vet that wouldn't allow payment to be made in installments isn't
a vet I'd want anyway.

There's a discussion going on in another note about the cost of care for
pregnant kitties and their babies. Your friends might have bit off more than
they can chew, expense-wise. I don't think the shelter would take pregnant
cats, but they'd be the first ones I'd call...883-8512.

"Friends of Animals" provides low cost spay/neuter certificates,
as do many local animal shelters. Call around and see....

I go to the Merrimack Animal Hospital on DW Highway in
Merrimack. Because of the number of cats I have, they
let me pay what I can at the time of the service and then
bill me in installments. Also, I brought in a stray kitten
once to be looked over. They gave her a couple of shots but
only charged me the visitation fee. Since these people are
doign this out of the good of their heart, they may be able
to strike a deal with the folks there. The number is 424-9922.

    	Good luck!

Thanks to those who provided information. I've passed
it on to my neighbors, but don't know how much help it
was to them. If anyone has any more suggestions I'd
greatly appreciate them.

This is a little late but I order my medications (non-prescription)
from Revival Vet supply in Sioux City Ia. I can get things like
Terramycin eye ointment for about $2.50 and MITOX which is VERY
effective against mites for considerably less than you'd pay yor
vet. Also, you can purchase flea sprays that are very very
effective for considerably less than you'd pay your vet or a
    pet store.

I also purchase my vaccines from these folks but I wouldn't advise
people to start doing their own vaccines on a regular basis unless
they are either breeders or have 15 or so cats. I feel very strongly
that a stray needs to be examined by a vet. There are too many
illnesses that lay people just wouldn't know about or see.
