106.3in case owner is wondering...JURAN::MILESThu Feb 27 1992 15:4913
I hate to put this in here, but if by chance anyone knows who might own
this cat, please let them know.

I found a cat this morning which had been hit by a car in the middle of
the road. I found it on Route 20 about 1/4 mile West of The Hebert
Candy Mansion in Northboro, MA. I drove past it, then turned around
to pick it up. I think it had been there for quite a while. She was
    already dead.

The cats description was a female calico. I brought it to the
    Northboro Vetinarian Clinic around 9:30.

    Michele,

I saw the cat on my way to work. Only I didn't realize it was a cat.
It was laying on the center line. I always see wildlife :^( that got
hit on that road, but never a cat. Although I have seen many feral
cats along the side in the grassy areas. They are terrified of people
though. I have a feeling the cat might have been part of a feral
    colony.

You were brave and compassionate to stop and help, even though the cat
had already passed on. Thank you for making me aware of this. Next
time I see something in the road I will be sure to take a closer look.

Regarding stopping to get dead or injured animals out of the road:

When I volunteered at the Humane Society, they stressed the importance
of notifying the proper authority (California Transportation Dept.
here) to get the animals since it is quite dangerous to stop and get
out of your car on a possibly traffic-y road. Here in CA, only
CalTrans can legally stop to retrieve animals, debris, etc., out of the
    roadway.

BTW, I'm not condemning what you did, but it is also very dangerous to
approach an injured animal that doesn't know you (or even one that
    does).

    sympathetically,
      Michelle

FYI - in California (Santa Clara Co. specifically). Cal Trans will
remove animals from freeways (although it seems to take them a couple
of days to get around to it based on past experiences) but the Humane
Society will come out for non-freeways.

106.9Found at PKO1 - Black/White catICS::BEDINIThu Nov 05 1992 10:0523

Found at PKO1 - Maynard, MA

Elderly black cat with white markings, on Wednesday November 4.
This cat was soaked to the bone, lying in the PKO1 parking lot,
evidently injured somehow. He wasn't moving and looked very scared.
I snuck him in the building and called my vet in Leominster,
    and brought him right in.

He has one tooth left in his mouth, and the Dr. thought he was
approx. 13 years old. They kept him overnite for X-rays and
observation. He was bleeding through this nose a little, suspecting
internal injuries. I am accepting all responsibility for all costs
(plus the donations from Co-workers) but would like to find his home
(if he has one). Today I will be hanging posters around the Maynard
    area.

If you have any suggestions, info., etc. Please send mail or call
    me at DTN 223-6486.

    Thanks,

In my experience posters are the best method for finding a lost
pet and I would think they were just as effective for a lost owner.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know this is not about a dog, but I would like help from all in
finding the owners.

Last night on my way home from work I found a cat in the road that had
obviously been hit by a car and it was just lying there upright staring at the
cars. 4 cars drove over the cat not hitting it but not stopping before I could
get turned around to stop traffic. I know it was dark and he/she is almost
black, but I saw it from the other side and he was in the middle of the lane!!

Once I wrapped him in a blanket and put him in a crate in my truck I
realized I did not know where to look for his owner. I was on rt 119 in
Littleton, in front of the Church of the Latter Day Saints [near Gary's farm
stand and Lawrence Lane] No one was home at Blue Cape Antiques, I doubt the
dairy farm would be looking for him. So I brought him home. He was in tough
shape last night, kind of shocky and rasping breathing. I was torn between
taking him to the vet to be euthenized or to just wait to see how he fared.
He appears to have been hit in the head, can't find any broken bones so there's
not much you can do except keep him quiet and warm and wait.

This morning he seemed better, not shocky, but still hurting and pretty
scared [though not nasty about it]. I would be too after what he'd been though
and then going to a house full of German Shepherds! Anyway, he/she [haven't
checked yet, though his head seems to be shaped like a male] is mostly black
with white on the tips of the feet and a little under the chin. He appears to
be fairly young.

Please pass the work in Littleton. I plan to put up a sign at the
Farm stand. Could someone who reads feline cross post this?

There's really no need to post a note in a file more than once. Most
people read through the current notes on a "next unseen" basis, so you
don't have to worry about people not seeing a new note. More than one
copy of a note in any one file just takes up disk space.
106.16AIMHI::PMURPHYFri Nov 06 1992 16:4513
I have already communicated with Karen on this cat and she said it
appears to be out of shock and doing okay with fluids she's given it
and keeping it warm. These are the two things a vet did for a cat I
picked up from the highway in NH not long ago. However, the cat I
picked up had actually been struck and run over by more than one car
by the time I found him so he had much more damage and never came out
of shock. The cat Karen rescued had cars going over (straddling but
not touching) his body so maybe has a better chance of surviving. I do
agree though that he should be examined by a vet asap because of the
possibility of head injuries needing attention.

He's [a full one too] doing fine. Friday night when I went to check

up and started purring. He's been in the house all weekend, we're working
on the box training :-} I think he's been on his own for awhile, because
he's a real garbage fiend!
He's very affectionate, fine with the dogs, slept with my son for
naps this weekend. Even though my son is in love with him [he calls him baby
cakes or Telly], my husband won't let him stay. I guess it's enough to have
dogs with him allergic to them!

106.18Found, white male cat in WorcesterPOWDML::CORMIERMon Jan 04 1993 10:3224
FOUND : WORCESTER, MA (near Kentucky Fried Chicken on Park Ave)

My tenant found this odd-looking kitty near KFC. She'd like to find his
owner, but failing that would part with him to an adoptive home.
    Description :

Whole male, young (1 year maybe?), all white except for dark toupee and
dark spot on the bottom of his nose which looks like a moustache.
Triangular face, very long nose, big ears, long front legs. Looks
rather exotic. Funny, yeowling type of voice. Maybe Siamese-mix?
    Golden eyes.

He's very sweet, very friendly, doesn't like to be picked up but will
crawl into your lap. He's presently secluded from the other cats in our
combined households until we find the $$$ to get him to a vet. We
are currently treating him for ear mites, cleaning up his wounds (looks
like he's been on his own for a while), and getting rid of his fleas.

If he's your cat, please call me! I'll give this note a while, and if
I don't hear anything I'll repost in "adoptions".

It's happened again, I (or rather my sister this time) have
connected with another disconnected kitty. She was found
on the grounds of McLean Hospital in Belmont. I won't go
into details but she was definitely a disconnected kitty.

She is a mushy tortoiseshell with a long tail but no other
distinguishing markings. She may be pregnant, but a visit
to the vet today will determine that. My past experience is
that I won't find her people, but it doesn't matter as she
    has a home with us.

I think I was destined to connect with this little cat.
My dear Miss Moffet went to kitty heaven this past summer.
She was a mushy tortoiseshell also, with a little gold crown
on her forehead, and an gusset of tiger orange in the back
of her right front leg, black boots on her hind legs and
neat little paws. The new kitty has all these things.

The new kitty will never replace Miss Moffet, but I thank
what ever forces that send sweet natured kitties just when
I need something good to happen in my life.

106.24Grey & White Whole Male, Nashua, NHLEVADE::DAVIDSONWed Feb 17 1993 11:1831

 Hi...

This morning I "encountered" a grey & white tom cat (whole) on rt 111
in Nashua, NH infront of Custom Canvas (west side of rt3). (He was
traveling north, I was traveling east..) The people who were home said
he wasn't theirs, but the didn't know of a vet in the area (their cats
     were inside).

Anyway, this fellow is now at Country Side Animal Hospital in Hudson,
NH (yes, I realise there must be closer vets, but I've been taking my
critters to Buzz (Dr. Brody) for 10+ years now and needed reasurance).

Buzz says that Mr. Cat is in good shape, a little shaken up and a few
broken teeth. He appears to be a real sweetie, was very willing to be
picked up in a blanket, put in a box, and kept me good company on our
15 min drive to Hudson (what a long drive).

If anyone knows of this cat and who it belongs to (or who belongs to
to him) PLEASE let them or me know. He'll be at Country Side for a few
     days.

We've decided that we won't keep him. I will have him tested for
those nasty contagious diseases and have him nutered (sp?) before putting
him in a shelter if his family is not found.

				Thanks

106.25MK1 roaming catTRACTR::MINTONSat May 08 1993 01:2011
There is a real friendly cat roaming around MK1 at night. It is black
with white paws, chest, nose and whiskers. It is out there in the parking
lot crying every night. It seems to enjoy being around people as it
comes to you and loves to petted and talked to. Does anyone know any-
thing about this cat? We (the 2nd shift NEI operators) are quite
concerned about it and are wondering if anyone is feeding it. It
doesn't look like it is starving. Wondering if someone may have just
dumped it off here the last week or if it may be lost. It is way too
friendly to be a wild cat. Thanks for any info.

106.26Cat made DEC his homeBUSY::KVILLANIMon Jul 12 1993 16:3036
Hi I am at the Franklin Digital where we have seemed to have
temporarily adopted a stray cat. Today he accidently/playfully
scratched me and naturall I was flipping out thinking my god now
I have rabies and I'll soon be foaming at the mouth. I have had alot
of experiences with dogs as I have had them all my life, but cats
    I do not have much.

Anyway, this cat looks like Morris, and is the most friendly little
guy (I think) I have ever seen. Someone stopped by the facility today
when he was outside the door and he poked around his ears and was
touching his stomach all over and this cat just loved it. I know of
so many cats that will get irritated to be touched on the stomach and
to have their ears fooled with but he was so gentle. He just keeps
rubbing against our legs. I am going to bring in food for him and
attempt to make him gain some weight, he looks like he could use about
    5 lbs.

I called animal control and no one has reported him missing. I had
asked the man about my scratch and he said that the only thing he could
do was take the cat for 10 days observe him and then destroy him and
have his brain sent to a lab to check fro rabies. I told him absolutely
not, that I would observe him here, and pray like heck he does not have
rabies. Even if he maybe did, the scratch was sooooo minor that I
don't think I could have contracted anything at all.

Anyway, if anyone knows of someone looking for a cat to give a good
home to, this little guy is something else. I am going to place an
ad in the paper about him under lost & found, maybe the owner will
    come forward.

Please let me know, you can contact me off-line if you would like

106.27Do not be afraid of rabies.BPSOF::EGYEDPer aspera ad astraTue Jul 13 1993 03:5912
There might be other opinions, but as I consulted one of my vets, from
a minor scratch you cannot get rabies. I always try to pet ANY stray cat that
lets touch itself, got scratched and bitten several times (sometimes seriously)
and am still here... The worst can be a minor tetanus-infection, but that you had
already noticed after two hours (red strip).

I would say, let it be as that...

I wish the guy a best home. And I am happy to see people handling stray cats as
they have to be handled: with love.

106.28NETWKS::GASKELLTue Jul 13 1993 09:1921
    Re: .1

Sorry Nat, but I have to contradict. Rabies is something to be very
afraid of. The Rabies virus is passed through saliva into an open
place on the skin. If you suspect you have come into contact with an
infected animal, you might get away with a course of 4 shots in the
arm. If you know you have been in contact with Rabies you must
receive a course of 12 shots directly into the abdomen, which are
very painful and not without risk, otherwise THERE IS NO CURE AND
    THE VIRUS IS FATAL.

I could not pass a possibly abandoned cat without trying to do something
for it, even if only to get them Rabies shots, but I have taken to
carrying a pair of strong leather gloves around with me for such
an occasion. There are a lot of kitties needing help out there and
I want to be around for a long time to give that help.

It is wise to understand Rabies, as perfectly healthy animals who
have received Rabies shots can carry traces of saliva on their
fur and you can still become infected through any open place in the
    skin.
106.29I am still alive....BUSY::KVILLANITue Jul 13 1993 12:5633
I did end up going to the Hospital. When I first sat down to be just
checked in the nurse looked at the finger and we both could not find
one trace of the scratch, she was debating whether to check me in or
just send me out because it was so insignificant. Well the doctor
said that because of liability they could not just send me off. I
got examined and he said that even if the animal had rabies it would be
a one ina million chance that I would get it from that surface scratch.
Then he said he was calling the animal control and that the cat had
to be watched or he would need to start the rabies treatment on me.
I asked him what that required and he said innitially 2 shots, then
every 3 days one shot. (the first 2 shots would be in the fingers where
I was scratched, and the remaining ones would be in the arm. IT would
be a total of 6 shots. I started crying, and yelled at him that the
animal control officer had already told me the cat would be destroyed.
So the doctor left and then I snuck out the back of the hospital room
and eavesdropped to see what he was saying. Then he came out and
caught me outside of his office, where he said that I should talk to
the animal officer to make arrangements. The Animal officer asked me
if he was going to have a problem finding him or catching him. I told
him he would not as he has made a home outside the Employee Lobby
overhang. I guess that was exactly where the man picked him up. I
told him under no condition is he to destroy the animal, eveen if we
have to take him back here. He said he would hold him for 10 days and
then if I wanted him back, I would need to pay for the rabies shot for
him. I don't find that a problem. But I don't feel comfortable keeping
him around here, he needs a home. I miss him not being here today, and
yesterday was the first day I seen him here.

.2 that was the doctors concern was that if the cat licked his paws as
they do to clean their face, and the scratched me, then the saliva
would have come into contact with the cut.

    Karen....

Why don't you start a little fund so you can also have enough money
to have the cat vaccinated, neutered, tested for the fatal diseases
etc. That way the chances of finding him a new home.....would
greatly improve. I'm willing to throw in a few dollars to help
    save the kitty.

I'm glad you are okay....and I hope your mind is at ease. I know
Dr's and Vets are making big deals out of any scratch/bite because of
    the liability.

Even though you are not a true cat person....your efforts to help
    this kitty is WONDERFUL!

I have a quick story for you...

My cat was sick so my mom and I took him in to a 24 hour emergency hospital.
While we were there, an animal control officer brought in a cat that was hit by
a car. About this time we were getting ready to leave the vet, so my mom was
putting Baby in his carrier. Like most cats, he didn't want to go in, so out
spreads all the legs and my mom's arm caught one of his claws. She got a
scratch. Because she's a bit allergic to cats, she asked the nurse for some
soap and water to help relieve some of the itching that might occur.

As we were waiting, the animal control officer started a friendly conversation
with us. He asked us about Baby and if he was an outdoor cat. When we said yes
he came around and took the carrier with Baby in it out of my mom's hands. He
told us that he *has* to put Baby in quarntine. My mom said that she was only
scratched, but that didn't matter.

Well the nurse and vet started arguing with him, they called up his supervisor
and two hours later, he released Baby to us with stern instructions on what to
look for in regards to rabies.

We were all very angry about this, including the vet, but I guess this is what
they do.

It's funny that the police didn't seem too concerned about
the skunk that showed up at my house 6:00am Sunday morning, staggering
and falling down. It's a long story, but it ended when we found
the skunk dead at around 1:00pm. I guess it depends where you
    live.....

Policies for reacting/responding to rabies suspicion vary greatly.
In New York State, some counties are in epidemic status and some have
had few cases. I live in a rural county with no animal control other
than one town dogcatcher per town. If a PERSON is bitten, they will
respond and try to trap or shoot the animal. Calls to police about
suspicious animals are responded to with "Stay away from the animal."
Even if you find a dead animal or kill one on your property, they say
just bury it, they don't have time to test every case unless it's
related to an injury to a person.

Well, what a story this cat has to tell, if he could talk that is...:)

I am sorry for not updating this note sooner, but I was writing so much
about him in Canine where I originally started it. Sooooo we do have
a very happy ending to a very stressful situation. See Canine Note
1215.0 I think in the beginning of the note I talk about the rabies
scratch but a little later in it, we continue the soap opera saga.

I am sure all the people in the FELINE note especially will enjoy the
    story.

    Have a good day :)

106.35Well, sort of found...RICKS::PSHERWOODTue Nov 16 1993 13:4026
Well, this cat hasn't exactly been "found" but he/she (I think its a
she or a nuetered male) has been hanging around Windsor Heights in
    Marlboro where I live.

The cat is rather friendly, and tries to go in anyone's apartment that
will let him/her. (I'll call her a her...) She meows a lot, and a
couple of times recently, I've let her out of the building in the
morning. Someone seems to be letting her in, unless she's found
    another way in.

She's charcol colored for the most part with some black streaks and
some white on her front. She's either full grown or is going to be
    really big!

She seems to be eating ok, or at least was eating ok recently, as she's
    not noticably skinny.

I can't take her, as I already have two kittens, and they're all I can
    handle! :-)

One of my neighbors took her around and asked people about her, but I
don't know what came of it.
I just thought I'd ask in here if anyone was missing a cat matching the
    description...

Well, I hate to enter this because we have all fallen in love with this
stray, but I also can't stand the thoughts of another family mourning his
loss.

Maynard (his new name) was found hanging around the front of the Main
Street Lobby at the Mill around March 20. He was approaching anyone
who would stop to pet him and he actually was blocking cars in the
parking lot. When it was found out that the animal control officer
had been notified the wheels went into motion to save him from an
uncertain fate.

He is a longish haired, gray, neutered male, about a year to a year
and a half old.

I have already talked to one woman in Stow with a cat of similar description
and it wasn't hers. She has signs up around the area but they are the only
ones I have seen.

If you know of anyone that is missing a cat of this description they can
call me at work at dtn 223-0364, outside at 508-493-0364, or at home at
443-5984.

In the sort-of-found department: a long-haired brown tabby with four
white paws (looks like a Maine Coon in build and overall appearance)
has been in my neighborhood (south Nashua, along Salmon Brook) for the
past two or three weeks. He (I think it's a he) is very shy, and comes
for food but keeps a careful distance from people. His coat was very
badly matted when I first saw him; large chunks have come away, but I
can't tell if somebody did it for him or he just rubbed or bit them off
himself. He does have a collar on (looks like the soft plastic kind
with sparkles in it), but no tag or label that I could see.

I've begun feeding him regularly and trying to get him close enough to
catch, so I can have a vet look him over. [For all I know, some of the
neighbors are feeding him too; I can't decide if he's a lonely and
scared stray, or a very canny moocher. ;-)]

If his description rings any bells, and he does have people who are
looking for him, I'd like to help reunite them; if not, I want to get
the poor guy off the street, and get the rest of those matts out of his
    beautiful coat...

The poor thing sounds so pitiful - you and your neighbors are
    wonderful to feed him.

Sounds like he was someone's pet, since he has a collar on. I'd
make an effort to try and find his owners first by calling around
the local vets to ask if anyone is missing a cat by his description,
checking the personal ads, and even placing an ad yourself.

Good luck - hope he's reunited with his owners soon.

There's a cat ruffing it in our neighborhood. Its been around for a few
weeks (3 to 4 ?). This is near the Nashua airport, not far from Broad St.
and Exit 6.

Its black and white (black body with white markings on face, white underbody,
white paws). It has large front paws (either double pawed or more than usual
number of claws). We think its a neutered male.

We have begun to feed it, but its spending the days in a neighbors yard where
there's other cats, a dog, and children - so it seems sociable and likes company.

If you recognize the cat or are interested in adopting it please send
mail or call (DTN) 381-6080, (H) 603-880-5498.

Thanks for the pointer. I haven't done so yet but that looks like a possibility.

However, Sharon ( from .41) has informed me that the Nashua Telegraph will
run a free 'found' add for 3 days. So we've arranged that. I'd like to
give the original owner the best chance to be re-united first.

This morning there is a stray cat hanging around the side entrance of

came running to me. He/she was very loveable and I gave the cat a few
bites of my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The cat was hungry.
It is a gray tiger. If I didn't have a 3 room condo and already have
a cat, I probably would bring it home with me. I feel so bad for it.

I HAVE BEEN FOUND BY YET ANOTHER CAT!

WHITE NEUTERED MALE, FOUND TOWNSEND ROAD, GROTON, MA
    		            ON CHRISTMAS MORNING
If you know of anyone who has lost a white male cat in this area please
    call 508 448-9959.

On Christmas morning, Christopher (the cat in the base note--we never
found his people BTW so he's ours now) came down the garden path with
a WHITE MALE cat, very cold, a bit dirty but in very good condition
otherwise. Chris encouraged him to come right up to the door and then
he banged on the door for me to let them in.

(Cleveland) Amory (that's the white cats working name) is cream white,
no markings or scars, fairly fat still, very good natured, and appears
    to be neutered.

I desparately need to find Amory's home and people. This will be our third
stray cat since October, and I now have 8 cats. I never planned to
have so many cats, I don't have the space, time, or cash for this
number. The vet is giving me group rates on care and there is a large
pan with at least one chicken and veggies on the stove at all times, which
helps keep down the cat food cost a bit. (Sorry to whinge, but I am
feeling desparate with 5 cats walking on me each morning at 4:30am.)

    Hi,

Last night I found a lost cat in my neighborhood. It came so close
to getting hit by a car that I couldn't look anymore and took the cat
in. Problem is that we have a dog and a cat and really don't want
another cat. I've called the police/two local vets/Pat Brody's (sp?)
cat shelter and the local Dog Officer. I've left descriptions and my
phone number at each place incase anyone calls. However, again we
can't keep the cat. I will place a description of the cat below, and
if anyone is interested you call call me and leave me a message at home
    or at work.

The cat is a Simese Mix, very pretty color gray with white paws and
white on the face. It is a male and it has the body of a Simese cat,
very good shape, the coat of this cat is very shined. The cat looks to
be full grown but has a great personality and seems to be very playful.
It is definately an INDOOR cat. Again, this cat ha sa GREAT
personality! And is not affraid of people or other animals.

Please call me at home at (508) 345-6008 and leave me a message with
a phone number to reach you by, or call me at work DTN 226-6457 and
leave me a message and number. I really don't know what to do if the
original owner of this cat doesn't come forward... again, I've called
and left detailed descriptions with all the local hospitals and
offices. The down side of this, is that I live in the college area,
and college kids are moving out this time of year.. I would hate to
think that the owner intentionally left this cat outside to fed for
    itself.

    Thanks,
    Kelly

    Hi Kelly...

The sad news is...he probably was left or dropped off. I also
live near the college area in Fitchburg...and have rescued
many many many cats who were just left behind from irresponsible
college students. Just since the March timeframe...I have
seen 5 new strays in my neighborhood. (so sad)

My only other suggestion would be to call the Fitchburg Sentinal
and have them look back in their records to see if anyone had
lost a cat with that description. I also believe they will give
you 1 free day of advertising in the Lost and Found.

Another suggestion would be to post notes at all the local
vets to say you either Found a cat or your looking for a new
    home for him.

Good luck...with alot of work you will be able to find him a
new home. It's just not easy...and most of the shelter are
pretty full because of Kitten season.

106.52FOUND YOUNG CAT, HELP?RDVAX::SELLERWed Aug 28 1996 17:0633
Hi

I have been read only for years but something happened Friday night and I
wondered if anyone had any ideas I haven't thought of yet?

My daughter was jogging over at the PKO parking lot and just in front of
the main entrance to PKO3 she found a young cat. I would say she is maybe
4 or 5 months old. She definitely was not a stray, she had a pink flea
collar and did not look as though she had been outdoors for very long. The
problem was that the cat started to follow my daughter, crying sadly. My
daughter tried to lose her so she would not lure her away from her home but
could not. We live on the other side of route 27 and my daughter was afraid
to leave her so close to that street at night, so she brought her home.
Saturday morning I called the police and the "dog" officer to see if anyone
had reported a lost cat, no one had. We took her around the houses on both
sides of the parking lot and asked everyone we saw if they knew where she
lived - no luck. We put up signs, but so far, no calls.

Is there anything else we can do? I really think she has a home. I hate to
think that someone dumped her there, but that is a possibility.

She is a gray tiger with white paws and chest. She likes to be petted but
objects to being picked up.

Please let me know if I can do anything else to return this kitty to her
owner. We already have two cats, a dog, a hamster, and some fish! Our
cats, both males, are all upset with this new addition.

Thanks for your help.

I'm in California, so I don't know what's what in your area, but
if I found a "lost" cat, I would call and let all the local shelters
and humane groups know, (including in adjacent towns, since cats
have been known to climb into open trucks, etc. and get involuntary
rides away from home,) plus put an ad in (what's usually a free) lost
pet column in the local newspapers and read that column. Note that
it usually takes a few days for an ad to get printed. Be careful
    when advertising that
you leave out enough info so that you can ask identifying questions of
anyone who calls, to weed out the cretins who claim lost animals to
sell them to research places. If there are only a few vets nearby,
    it's worth notifying them also.

Otherwise, hmm, it sounds like your two male kitties have a little
    sister :-)

    PK2.

Anyhow, in addtion to calling the dog officer in Maynard, also call
Sudbury and Concord. Those are close enough to PKO that the cat could
be from there. Also, call all the vets in those towns as well to let
them know about the cat that you found.

I seem to recall that when I found Alex, all of the "local" papers in
those towns printed free "found" ads for me.
