I'd like to thank the moderators for the wonderful job they do w/ this
    conference!!

On top of all of your other daily chores (Job, homelife, breeding, cat
clubs, etc), the fact that you take the time to moderate this file
is AMAZING!!! I've always found that the moderation of this conference
has been very fair. We've been encouraged by the mods from time to time
to value differences, which makes everyone feel welcome. You all do a
wonderful, busy job, and It's appreciated by this feliner!

    Thanks again.....Purrs,

8.2Warning messages for conference directoriesTLE::WEISSNo way I'll crash, this is a *BEER* truck!Tue Dec 10 1991 13:1413
Hi There.

I have a request. When you create a very long note, like one that contains
a directory listing, could you post a short "warning next reply contains a
directory listing" note in a reply before the reply containing the long note.
The reason for this is that for those of use who use decwindows notes, the
*entire* note is loaded before you can read it. For a long note, this can
take several minutes. If a warning is posted, one can just hit "next unseen"
and not have to see the directory if he/she doesn't want to.

Thanks much

Dave

Yes, I don't think we need a new directory every day also, although
thanks for the work. the conf isn't so big yet that people can't do a
    dir.

The directory of the old version of Feline is very long, but it is not
updated everyday. Once you have seen that note, it won't show up as a
    next unseen again.

The other two directory notes are updated every day by a batch stream,
but as of yet they are not long enough to create problems for most
    users.

    RE: .8.2

Note 3.0 does mention that the next reply is a listing of the archived V1
conference, so I consider that a warning.

We are updating the DIRECTORY note daily for a couple of reasons.
First, I should mention that the I/O generated by FELINE on VAXWRK
was pretty high, especially since so many folks tended to do (and
recommend to others) DIR/TITLEs. VAXWRK was a cluster of BIG machines,
but MUTTON is not, and doesn't have the bandwidth to spare (not to
mention the fact that it is no longer on the Greater Maynard Area) We are
hoping that by keeping the conference directory updated, folks will
just extract that locally and search through it when they need to find
something and can't seem to locate it via keywords. At some point in the
future we might consider putting in a warning note each day that
proceeds the daily directories, but for now changing the batch stream
is just another 5 minute job that none of us have time for (and as Jo
said, right now the directory listings aren't that long that it will
    create a problem.

re: .5
But note 3.0 is not updated every time the replies are updated, so you only get
one chance to bypass the directory listing. For those of us who read the
conference frequently, we've probably already seen that note, so we'll only
see the replies (i.e. the directory listings) and not the base note again.

I, for one second Dave's request. If we start the practice now, it won't be an
issue later (i.e. how big is too big). I for one don't particularly care to
see a directory of notes within a topic because, as a decwindows user, I have
a directory readily available.

3.1 is a non-issue; 3.0 says that the next reply is the directory of
the archived conference. Unfortunatly, when we created the new
confernece, we put in 3.0 that the next reply would be a dir of the
old confernce, and forgot to actually put the directory in there. When
we realized the mistake, we put it in, and yes, if you had already seen
3.0, it didn't help (especially if you were using the DECwindows
interface). HOWEVER, if you have now seen it, you don't ever have to
see it again. What will come up on a next unseen are the daily
directories of the current conference. And yes, we will put in a
warning note about them sometime in the future, but right now NONE OF THE
MODERATORS HAS THE TIME TO CHANGE THE BATCH STREAM AND *TEST OUT* IF THE
CHANGES WORK. WHEN THINGS SLOW DOWN A LITTLE, we will make this change,
but again, the daily directory listings are not that big that it
should impact anyone to dramatically at this time. (We are a bit
reluctant to say WHEN because things have a tendendcy to go crazy
whenever we announce we have plans to do something.)

The DIRECTORY topic will remain for SEVERAL reasons.

    1. Not everyone has a workstation.
    2. Most folks *I* know with workstations prefer the character_cell
       interface for VAX Notes
    3. For DECwindows to maintain that directory listing is actually quite
I/O intensive. If you are trying to find something that is burried
somewhere in the conference (and the moderators are asked to find
things quite frequently) the fastest way is usually to get a
directory listing and SEARCH through it. We are saving you the time
of doing a DIR/TITLE=something, and in the process, putting a little
less of a burden on MUTTON (which doesn't have nearly the throughput
power that VAXWRK had, and I have to tell you, the I/O from FELINE
brought the VAXWRK cluster to it's knees more than once.)

I understand this. This is why I didn't complain at having the other
directories. I just don't want to be forced to look at them when they get long.

personal opinion - I happen to prefer the windows variety, as do most
of the folks that *I* know. When you have multiple interfaces, you are bound to
have differences of opinion. Therein lies the challenge - to try to do the best
for both worlds, without completely alienating one of them.

I, for one, and I realize I may be an anomaly, usually try to do
a keyword directory first if I'm trying to look for a particular topic.

Well, to be honest I don't particularly like it...or understand it.
What does it mean? I can't see how an an interest in cats has anything
to do with valuing differences. In any case, this is an international
conference, and outside the US "valuing differences" is not a very
    meaningful phrase.

I'd rather go back to "Meower power" - short, catchy, amusing and with
no "PC" connotations. What was the problem with that?

RE: Meower Power and valuing differences

The conference title is a real good example of what this reply is all
about. It is called a "compromise". We like "Meower Power", too, but
we are also battle weary of how often differences haven't been valued,
so we'd like to put in a gentle reminder to folks, and in a place that
    folks have to see it.

Soooo, "Meower Power" will remain in the title, as will "Valuing
Differences". If folks don't like "Meower Power Means Valuing
Differences", here are a few others that we would consider:

    	Meower Power is Valuing Differences
    	Meower Power Values Differences
Meower Power - Where Differing Opinions are Valued
Meower Power - Where Differing Opinions are Respected
Meower Power - This Conference Values Differences

This conference title discussion sums up the problem with this file -
it should be all about felines and not politics. I frequently drop out
of this file for months on end after a burst of over moderation ... I
can feel another attack coming on. Why can't we have the old title and
go back to the moderation policy of about 2 years ago? There is nothing
wrong with discussion, there is nothiong wrong with being told off for
going too far. Let's get back to discussing felines and leave being PC
for another conference. People should remember that there are noters

8.33CONCERN REGARDING THIS FILETRACTR::MCGOWANFri Apr 03 1992 08:3418
Hi folks, I must tell you that I do not think that it is a good idea
to separate the kitties who need a home from the rest of the notes in
this file. The reason is simple, if a person is looking for a kitty
then yes they will go to a special file but sometimes a person who is
not necessarily looking for a kitty will see a note come up describing
a special kitty that needs a home and perhaps they will in fact
consider adoption. This is how I found homes for kitties in the past
in this file. People who at first said "I already have 4 or 3 or 6 or
whatever, but then, well whats one more. I put a note in yesterday
morning and in the past I would hear from at least 3 or 4 folks within
the 24 hour period. I have heard nothing yet.

Anyway, I just wanted to express my opinion. My concern is for the
kitties that desperately need homes. I would want to give them EVERY
    chance possible to be adopted.

    Thanks
    Arlene
8.34CSSE32::RAWDENCheryl Graeme RawdenFri Apr 03 1992 09:3016
    Arlene,

I disagree. Having "adoptions" in one note helps readers because it's
*organized*. If I was looking for a cat, I wouldn't be reading every
new note entered, I would specifically be focusing on the note for
adoptions and would read all the replies. For those of us that are
regular readers, we come across new entries every day, whether they are
replies to an existing note or a new note.

Also, you will find that due to the recession, many people are strapped
for cash and can't afford the luxury of adding another cat to their
family. Shelters are overflowing with animals because people keep
losing their jobs (and for various other reasons) and they need to cut
back on spending. There's also a lot less people at DEC now, so
perhaps that is why you aren't being "bombarded" with responses. Hang
    in there and be patient....
8.35I disagree also, but agree with CherylSELL1::FAHELAmalthea Celebras/Silver UnicornFri Apr 03 1992 09:409
There is also the chance that some kind soul not necessarily looking
for a new furball to love would come across the new adoption note (IN
the adoption topic) simply by the "Next Unseen", so its not as if
people don't have the opportunity to see it.

I agree with the "Adoption" topic! (But then again, I always WAS very
    organized!)

    K.C.
8.36from your friendly moderatorMUTTON::BROWNFri Apr 03 1992 18:5324
The main reason that this notesfile is set up with an adoption topic is
to keep the file organized, and to slow the rapid growth of this file.

If you go back into Feline-V1 and look closely at the directory, you
will find that almost 50% of all new topics created were from people
advertising cats that needed a new home. During the spring and summer
months, sometimes more than 50% of topics were adoption notices.

When Feline needed a new home, we had to archive it and start it over
because it was quite simply too big and taking up too much space. Now
that Feline has a home on MUTTON, part of my job as moderator is to
keep it to a manageable size. It is because of this that we have some
topics set aside to cover the most often discussed topics, such as
Adoptions, Lost Cats, Shelters, FUS, etc.

Most noters read notes using the next unseen command. When using next
unseen, the reader will see each note chronologically until they have
seen all notes. It doesn't make any difference when you read with this
command whether a note is a reply to an existing topic, or a new
topic, you will still see it. For that reason, adoptions get no more
or less attention as a reply than they would as a new topic.

    Jo

here. When reading this file and hitting next unseen, it goes back to
notes I've already read. Sometimes it takes me back the same note 2 or

    only conference it's happening in.

WHat you have observed can happen under a number of circumstances.
It can happen under the conditions Karen described, it can happen if
you have read something and shortly after you read it, the moderator
has moved it (in this case it will have a new note number), it can
sometimes happen if you are reading the confernece and the link goes
down to MUTTON (and for some reason your notebook's seen bitmap
didn't get set). It can also happen if the conference has some form of
RMS corruption. If this happens to you again, please let the

it is an RMS corruption problem we can uncorrupt the file.

has resisted everything I have tried to delete it. It tells me it has
deleted and then I look and it is still there.

8.44Where are all the noters gone!MAYES::MERRITTKitty CityWed Jun 24 1992 16:0931
Not to sure where to put this note...but I'll try here!!

I just want to comment on the "limited" participation in the
feline file recently...which is really getting me depressed. I
feel like a lost kitten who needs to find a new home. Where did
all our wonderful, compasionate friends go...where is the support
which we all have received from this file in the past!! An example
of this is if you look back at new notes from folks looking for
support for a sick cat or a cat that has just passed away...you
will find limited support. (if any) I know how wonderful this
file made me feel when I went through Van Gogh's sickness...you
guys kept me sane with all your support and I couldn't thank you
    enough.

What's happening......it is my opinion that we lost some of our friends
after the feline moved to a new node. I'm not knocking the
moderators...because believe me I wouldn't want the job...but is it
because people are afraid to write...are we afraid to add a note for
fear it will be moved...are we afraid to comment because we fear we
cannot value differences. I can't believe in my heart that it is
because we no longer love cats or we no longer want to provide support.
And I do understand we lost some folks to Serp....but there is more
    to it then that.

What's happening....I love this file and want to bring back the
compassion and support. I don't want to open a can of worms....
but maybe if we can find out why everyone "bailed out"...we can
    resolve some of the issues.

8.45Lots a reasons!GRANPA::CCOLEMANClub Pet Opens Resort in LicktensteinWed Jun 24 1992 16:2652
I don't feel it's anything against our fellow feliners or moderators.
I'm sure there are alot of outside sources effecting the number of
notes. Here are my thoughts on what's going on.

Vacation: here it is June already, and people ACTUALLY are taking
vacations! Man, I'd LOVE to have a vacation about now! So, I'm assuming
that some of our fellow feliners are taking a well-deserved vacation.

Company: the rumors are spreading again. It's possible that alot of
people are spending less time in notes, and more time worrying about
their jobs. Or, it's just the stress of the job that people don't feel
    like writing.

Jo: Since Jo has been home recouperating, she hasn't been as active in
the feline file. However, when she does log in, she's pretty active!
Anyhow, I notice daily who the majority of the writers are, and Jo is
definitely one of them! (Bet she didn't realize what an influence she
    had on the notes file!)

Cat shows: For those people who show their cats, it's the end of the
season, and alot of award are being presented at the annual meetings
(for example, CFA's is this weekend). I've noticed that there are not
a lot of shows during the summer, so there's not as much activity.

Weather: I don't know about your part of the country, but in this area
(Wash, DC/Maryland/Virginia) it's been unseasonably cool, and very,
very nice! I'd much rather be gazing outside, getting into work early
and leaving early to enjoy the afternoon!

Kittens: I, for one, have been so busy with my recent litter (really,
they're not mine, they're Gracies', and she has to keep reminding me of
that!) that I don't spend the time in the evenings in feline like I
used to. I notice alot of people in this file not only have one litter,
but several to take care of! I can almost understand what they're going
    through!

Moderation: The moderators can feel free to move ANY of my notes into
another topic if I've messed up. I don't think anyone should be
offended. I'd much rather those notes are more easily found -- sort of
like writing a paper. You don't start another paper when you could have
included it into your initial thesis!

Conclusion: In conclusion, I'm assuming that all of the above factors
have taken place, and that is why the conference is lacking
participation! I could write about Charlie, Shanti, Gracie, P.A.,
Robbie, and all 5 of my kittens, but I think you guys would get a
little sick about hearing about them all the time!

    Okay guys, start writing!!!

I'm a newer Feliner, and hate to have to leave. But, my contract sez
that I have to "beat feet" outta here next week.

    I DON' WANNA GO!!!!!

I'm hoping for the day that I can get back onto a system, log back in,
    and TYPE, TYPE, TYPE!

I still can't get over the support and responses I got when I wrote
about my loss of Tiki II...and that was a few months after the fact!
You all also allayed my husbands fears...he was afraid that people
would think him "silly" for STILL missing Tiki so. He now feels that
he is "allowed" to miss Tiki as much as he wants, for as long as he
    wants (me too).

This is STILL the fastest moving NOTESfile that I belong to! :^)

I'm not sure about other folks, but I tend to send replies via Email to
the people. Sometimes I have things to say that don't seem proper in
    the public forum.

I agree though, that a lot of the factors already stated probably have
a great deal to do with the slowness of the conference. It is still the
most active file I read also!

As some of you have noticed, Jo hasn't been able to particpate as much
recently due to her surgery. Jo Ann is a wealth of information about
feline diseases, behavior, etc. I'm doing my best to fill in for her
as moderator but I just don't have the knowledge base that she has.
I know I depend on her replies to the topics requesting information
    on specific illnesses, etc.

Another one of our members was not noting as much recently either
(again due to surgery). Dian Wilde has been recuperating and I notice
now that she is popping in here now and again.

As one of the previous replies mentioned, there are vacations, SERP,
etc. I believe the support is still there, its just that people's
time in the file may be more limited. For myself, I spend so much
time playing moderator lately that I haven't had much time to spend
doing other things with my limited noting time.

We have lost quite a few people it seems recently. .46 is another
example, goodby K.C.! Maybe you'll be back soon.....
I think everyone is concerned about their job, how they spend their
time, etc., waiting for that big announcement to come. I lot of people
I talk to spend less time in notes files.
I think we are much too close and friendly a group to ever become
cold to one another. This is the only file I know where the people are
so close and get together and enjoy cats so much.
We just have things on our minds I guess.

Thanks for sharing your comments and opinions....I do agree with
most of it but I still feel we have been losing some long time
feliners one-by-one over the last few months.

Maybe everyone needs a break for awhile....but I sure miss reading

    re .44 and on:

I fully agree with .45 about the reasons.
I am user of a lot of notesfiles, and among them all FELINE is the
most turbulent I assure You! I sometimes had trouble to read the almost
    too many notes and replies...
I am sure we DO love cats. And each other, too. Keep your head high,
Sandy, if I am not on field, I am always here for you (and for all the
other lads an' lasses) with may useless but loving words. And feel free
to contact me directly on a topic if it is so (I am E-mailing with half

I tend to think the JOBS notes file gets a bit more traffic than
FELINERS at the moment.... Wonder if any of us will be left after the
    magic of July?????

Sandy, don't be depressed. Many of the replies before this one list a
number of good reasons why people haven't been noting. Why, I haven't
even had it in me lately to pick on you about whole males! :^)

My advice to Sandy - plan that gathering at the Pat Brody shelter and
you'll see all the positive responses. Just make sure that you tell
everyone that cancels out at the last minute that we are going to make
this conference membership only and they won't be allowed in. That
will teach em. :^) :^) (just kidding folks)

Hi Sandy.. tis Moi.. well I think that past notes kind of put some
sanity around the question of the day.. Where is everyone these
days. I can only speak for myself, when I tell all of you,,
that just because you do not hear from me, that does not
mean all of my friends here in feline are not on my mind.
Just to bring you all up to date,, the girls and I are fine.
I will be at the show in Needham this weekend with MS Preschie.
MAMACIN will be there as well.. so stop on by and visit for
a bit. I am excited to finally have the time to get to a
show(the last one I did was in December ,seems like light years
ago.) Kissy got a POP award from CFF,, for Best Tortie
Exotic SH Alter,, she was very Blase' about the whole thing,,
although I have been told that she occasionally takes
the certificate out and waves it at Preschie.. and
mutters things like" I would like to thank the Academy, my
MAMACIN, my parents, THE FIRM..ETC. smirk grin giggle.
I can also tell you that MS PRESCHIE has been less than
gracious about Kissy's day in the sun.. that "sweet open
expression has gone south.. BIGTIME.. she er um has
some concerns about having an "INGENUE" in the house..
she wrote Auntie Marlene,, told MAMACIN all about it...
and I suspect has been in contact with THE FIRM..
Anyway,, more later.. line forming, phone ringing..
    Kate, Happy, Preschie and Kissy..

Well, this is the first note I trully saw when I got back into the
file today....I have been in and out on a very limited basis due
to the amount of work in our department. With the way the people
are leaving DEC, there is more to do on the part of each person in
our group. So sorry for not being there for everyone. I feel
doubly guilty in that when I picked up Sophie off the street back
a few months, so many of you came to my aid. And I haven't been
in the file in so long that I had to do a set seen/before or I
would NEVER have gotten through all the new notes.

Sandy, you are right. A lot of us haven't been there. Will try
    to get in more often.

8.55I thought you guys had been very prolific :')MUTTON::BROWNset home/cat_max=5 girls 2 boys 2 hhpsThu Jul 02 1992 05:2336
Boy this note caught me off guard tonight! I logged in over an hour
ago and the date was 22-June-1992, and an hour later I am only up to
the 26th of June!! I was thinking that a *LOT* of noting was going on
    here in my absence! ;')

I think that with the current state of the company, the fact that it is
summer, the fact that me and my big mouth can't log in very often, and
that some of our heavy hitter noters have lots of things going on in
their personal lives all comes into play in why the file may seem
    slower.

Even when Feline resided on VAXWRK we had periods where there would be
reduced noting. Also, when we moved Feline to MUTTON we did anticipate
slightly reduced noting since we figured that east coasters who were
used to the speed of VAXWRK would be turned off by MUTTON. But, since
MUTTON was the only available home at the time, that was how it had to
be. But, the thing is, I never really felt that moving the file to
MUTTON affected the number of notes. This file was off to a fast start
right from the beginning. Think about it, even with our repository
notes, and massive organization, this file has grown quite a bit in the
8 months it has been on MUTTON.

And please, everyone, do not be offended if a note of yours gets moved
to another location. We moderators do not like moving notes, but we do
like to be able to find important info quickly when someone needs it.
Keeping the file organized helps with this effort. Please don't take
it personally. And, if you wish to avoid the note moving thing, you
can check the keywords before you create a note to see if a note on
    your topic already exists.

For now, I can only afford to log in about once a week or so. Maybe
even less once my housekeeper starts working (but I HAVE to have a
housekeeper). So, I will add what I can when I can. Don't get lonely
Sandy. Lots of us are here, but many of us are read only sometimes.

    Hi Judy,

To save Jan a bit of time and trouble, the machine with WRO10C on it
was brought down several times because of space constraints in their
computer room (she called it something else but I forget what) caused
by plant closings and reorgs. They kept plugging it in, and someone
else kept taking it back down.

She said it may end up on MISERY, but I haven't heard any more about
that from her. I'm just glad it's back! I was going through severe
    withdrawal without it! ;-)

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the nice things everyone has said.

Part of the problem with WRO10C was that once we got it put
back where it belonged, the hookup to the network died.
Since the system manager had some other pressing priorities
surrounding the move we weren't able to get in and figure
out what the actual problem was until last night.

FELINE will be moving to MISERY. I just have to choose the
date and time. The sooner, the better as far as we are
concerned here. WRO10C is a MicroVAX. MISERY is a much
larger machine (though I can't remember what kind at the
    moment).

So, prepare yourselves for a brief outage. I'll try to
give you as much notice as possible.
