5.1Found LOVING HOME for StrayFSOA::NGRILLOWed Dec 04 1991 11:2312
I have a very happy ending to a note that I had added to the old notes
file the day before Thanksgiving (forgot the Note #) Anyway, I had
picked up a 6-month old stray at a convenience store in Marlboro. He
is now part of the family of my friend Linda and her son who live in
Boston. This kitten LOVES to TALK and is extremely intelligent! I
believe he is at least part Siamese and not sure what the other part
is. Also, because of location, he will be an indoor cat.

P.S. My friends's boyfriend, who originally thought of taking him and
didn't, called me Sunday night and is kicking himself in the *ss because this
    stray is such a LOVE!!

5.2White Kitty has found a home!VMSMKT::THOMPSONKate Comiskey ThompsonTue Dec 10 1991 07:5225
I'm happy to report that White Kitty has found a good home,
through this file, and is now named Snowball. I reported extensively
in the old file on this little wanderer with the gray mohawk.

It was very hard to let her go. As much as I wanted to find her a
good home, I was not prepared for her absence. It's gotten much
easier, but I still miss her terribly. Funny how these little
guys find their way to your heart.

But, I'm happy we were able to help her when she needed it. Our kitty,
Poppy, was a stray before we got her, and I always hope someone was
kind to her when she needed it.

Thanks so much to all of you for your help, advice, and support.

To the woman from Marlboro who called about adopting White Kitty:
Forgive me for not getting back to you. I lost the piece of paper
with your name and number on it and couldn't remember your name
for the life of me! Sorry about that.

    Thanks again, everyone.

5.5Hello and Merry Christmas!!!!!!STUDIO::WESTONThu Dec 12 1991 10:3035
    HELLO Feliners..........

This is Carol Weston....for those of you NEW to these notes, you
wouldn't recognize the name, the oldies but goodies will! I am here
visiting my hubby (I am currently one of the unemployed). I have in
the past placed several strays from my neighborhood to fellow feliners
here at DEC and over the past year, have place several with the Pat
Brody Cat Shelter, through this Feline notes file. I would just like
to say "Hello!" and let the ones who know me know that a few weeks ago,
I place there a Mother cat and her three kittens over two months.
Before that time, I socialized the kittens very well and feel that
they'd be wonderful pets. I have been out of tough with Priscilla, but
plan on calling her to see how they have done.

I am down to 4 strays, whom I take care of. Two come and sleep in the
house most of the time now, with my Scruffy. There are also two wild
ones, still out there, one I seldom see and one has come back, I think
it's sick. It's that time of year too, in making babies and I know I
have two females. Like the shelter, my family in very low on funds, so
as soon as we can, we'll take care of them, I just, in the meantime,
    hope NO MORE BABIES!!!!!!!!!

I send out warmest wishes to all of your "Fur-Faces!" and a Very Merry
    Christmas to ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Carol Weston

5.8One-pet-only home found for SiameseWEORG::SHEPARDFri Dec 13 1991 09:2110
Around Thanksgiving, I entered a note in the old conference requesting
a home for a male Siamese who needed to be the *only* pet in a family.
I noted that it was my veterinarian who was trying to find a good home
for this fellow on behalf of some of his clients.

I'm happy to report that the Siamese has been happily placed in a
loving, one-pet-only home and is enjoying all the creature comforts.

I keep meaning to enter this note to tell you all about Claude, because
I'm sure so many of you are wondering how he's doing!!

Claude was a stray wandering my neighborhood in early October. We
thought he was a girl, so we took him to the vets to have HER fixed.
Thanks to all of the generous feliners in this file, I was able to
afford to have Claude fixed, checked out, given shots & tested &
vaccinated!! THANKS SO MUCH! So, anyway....The vet called me telling me
that he thought we should change CLAUDIA'S name....to CLAUDE!!
Unfortunately, (for Claude) he had already shaved the poor embarrassed
boy's belly!! Awwwww, poor boy, he was really PO'd about that! %^)

So, I went & picked him up at the vets, and brought him back to the
house he was staying at. The lady across the streed fed & housed while
I took care of the vet (w/ a little help from my friends!). We made up
posters hoping that he was lost & had a home. He was so loveable that
we figured he MUST have belonged to someone. Well, nobody called to
say that they had lost a cat. We were bummin'.

A little girl in my neighborhood lost her cat to a car a couple of
months ago. She met Claude, who purred & rubbed up against her like
CRAZY, and they fell in LOVE! She cooed & cuddled w/ him so much that
I thought she was gonna cry!! I thought I was gonna cry!! She ran home
to ask her mommy if she could have a kitty, and her Mom wanted to talk
to Terry (Claude's other foster mom). Terry told her that he just
needed his 2nd round of shots, and that he already has a record on file
at the Marl. Animal Hosp. They took Claude home & I have not seen or
heard from them since!! I guess things are going well! If I do hear
    anything, I'll let you know!!

I just thought you'd like to know that the little guy isn't roaming
the streets anymore!! In fact, he's probably in a pretty pink bedroom
crashed out at this very moment, or he's sitting under a christmas tree
in someone's nice warm home!! :*)

5.12GBOF aka OscaerCRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313Wed Dec 18 1991 06:5927
I might as well enter a final chapter in the story of GBOF.
(Grey ball of fluff). A few months ago a grey and white kitten
of approximately 12 DAYS of age was found at the Bristol Yacht Club.
The folks who found it had no idea of how to care for a kitten of
that age so yours truely found herself being an adoptive mommycat.
My neighbor was good enough to provide "Kitty Daycare" until the
little fellow was old enough to go to a permanent home.

GBOF grew into a beautiful longhair Grey and white kitten with a
wonderful, loving personality. I dearly wanted him to have an
indoor only home and since the person who was originally going to
adopt him couldn't guarantee that, she very gracefully agreed to
    let me place him myself.

GBOF was adopted by a very nice couple from the East Greenwich cat
show a month or so back. They have one Maine Coon look-alike and
will be building their own home in the near future.

I called them on Saturday 12/14, to see how GBOF is doing. He has
be renamed "Oscar" because they can't keep him out of the garbage
pail :^) He's doing wonderfully - is happy, healthy and playful -
    and they adore him.

Thanks to all who helped me financially and emotionally! ANd thanks
    to Karen for understanding.

5.13Happy Ending for BubbleMLTVAX::DUNNEWed Dec 18 1991 12:5219
Thought I would update people on what happened to Bubble.
Some stories really do have happy endings.
She's so happy! The people who have her now are wonderful!
I've gotten to know them, and I love them! They love Bubble
as much as I did! She's so affectionate and pretty, no one
could help it, but they know how special she is. She is
actually even better off with them than with me, because the
woman is only away three hours a day, which is Bubble's heart's
    desire.

A cute little piece of cat behavior: I used to kiss Bubble on
the bridge of her nose, and now she puts her nose up to them
    to be kissed!

If anyone ever hears anything new about cat allergies, please
    let me know.

One of the kittens has found a home; we still have two more that we
really need to find homes for! A little more info:

    	- both are (we believe!) female
    	- one is a gray tiger, the other a beige tiger

The price is certainly right, and we'll even throw in a Christmas bow
for it's collar if it's for a Christmas present.

I didn't know where to place this, so moderator feel free to move.
This is just to say that the gray kitten in note 4.26 is currently
on hold for a woman in the file. But the other two black kittens are
still available if anyone is interested.

If the gray kitten is adopted, I will place a "success" story in Note
number 5. Thanks for everyone who responded to the gray kitten's
plight, but we still have two black kitties who'd LOVE a home for

5.17New Homes for KittensUSEM::SULLIVANTue Dec 24 1991 09:0729
RE: Note 4.26 - All kittens have been placed!!

I was the "foster" mom to the kittens in 4.26. I had cared
for them since Thanksgiving, and just recently Nancy posted
the note to place them permanently in loving homes.

I just wanted everyone to know that the kittens are now
in GREAT homes - here is a short update:

         1. The gray kitten was picked up on Saturday, 12/21 by
a wonderful lady from NH, and while she was there,
one of the black kittens she picked up feel asleep
in her arms and she decided to take him home too!
They are both settled in their new home. They also
have two older female cats and a dog.

         2. The other black kitty was picked up last night by
another terrific woman also from NH. He is going to
a home with a 6 month old female kitty so he too will
             have a playmate.

Thanks to everyone who sent me mail or called -- I am so
happy that all the kittens have new homes for Christmas --
safe, happy homes -- I hope they bring their new owners
many happy moments for a very long time.

         Merry Christmas!

5.19A new product to help with cat allergiesGRANPA::JLAWRENCEFri Dec 27 1991 15:2112
Just a note in reply to note 4.31 re:allergy to dander of cat
Some people are allergic to the protein in the salvia from the cats
licking themselves instead of the dander as commonly thought. I saw on
the Home show that a spray can be purchased from a vet or maybe a really
good pet supply store that will neutralize this and hence do away with
the allergy. They showed a woman with a cat before and after using the
product and it was amazing to see the difference in her(the woman's)
allergic reaction or lack thereof. I too have allergies to some cats
but I insist that I am going to have some again so will perhaps look
into this further when I am at a place when i can get some new furries.

5.21Allergies.......... ISLNDS::ROSTANZOMon Dec 30 1991 11:2426

I thank you for the info., I will try my local pet store tomorrow
night. unfortunately, my mother's breathing is so bad, she can't even
dress in the am. without losing her breath. We are keeping katie from
her as much as possible (which is hard since she is attached to my mom
the most) but she still wants to sit on her lap in the morning and
again at night....... I have begun the process of fostering her you
might say...... when she has her spell of wanting cuddling at night I
go pick her up and cuddle her (of course my dog is very hurt by this so
I sit with one hand on the dog and one patting Katie). She's starting
to look at me when I'm there... my mother hasn't let her on her chair
or lap since we realized it must be katie. She had a stress test and
its not her heart, so its lung/allergy related..she goes back thursday
to the Dr. again. Unfortunatley when the dr. gave her a breathing
medication that should have opened up her breathing all the way to
her lungs, it didn't get better.... which is where the allergy comes
in.. she is still breathing what she is having a reaction to ... the
passage way just opens up and lets more in!

Anyway, I thank you for your suggestions so far..... I realize with the
degree of her reaction, that I'm afraid it will take an awful lot to
help her.... right now she had to give up her job due to her difficulty
breathing... which is hard on her. I'll keep you posted....

5.23Why Adopt an Adult Cat?MCIS5::FRANZWed Jan 08 1992 10:2129
Many people who decide to have a cat as a pet want a kitten. This choice may
stem from their desire to please the child(ren), concern over the `adaptabi-
lity' of the new cat, etc. Thus, adult cats are often overlooked as desirable
pets, sometimes for no other reason as their `pre-owned' status.

Yet, most adult cats have much to offer: they are mature; they have lived with
adults and/or children; their behavior is more predictable; and their grown
size and temperament are easily gleaned. They can make very loving, affectio-
nate pets. Some cats, e.g., those in Humane Society shelters, have been
abandoned by their previous owners, sometimes for purely arbitrary reasons.

It is an act of great kindness to adopt such a pet, and it provides a special
sense of personal satisfaction. This is especially true when one adopts a feral
cat which has been rescued from its harsh environment, and often needs special
assurances that it is still considered a lovable being.

Remember: Kittens don't remain kittens for long! So, why not consider an adult
cat when planning to add a pet to your family? It will undoubtedly give you
many years of pleasure. Most adult cats have already been altered, and had the
necessary shots. You will feel the satisfaction of knowing that you have
brought long-yearned-for happiness into the live of an otherwise neglected
animal.

Look for the dedicated notes from animal shelters in this note, e.g., 17.*,
18.*, 19.*, 36.*. Most shelters are staffed by volunteers who consider both
yours and the animal's needs when placing a cat into a home. This results in
happy matches, and makes for rewarding, long-term cat/owner relationships.

5.24Zelda and Chubs (temporary names for now)CSSE32::RAWDENCheryl Graeme RawdenTue Jan 21 1992 08:2546
We adopted two very furry cats on Sunday from a seriously bad
situation. The owner had left these two babies alone in a condo for 6
months, no heat, no electricity and no human contact with the exception
of his occasional stop in to fill up a large container of dried cat
food, change the litter box and run. The sliding glass door was left
open 5 inches so the cats could use the litter box out on the freezing
cold balcony. (Mere words for this idiot cannot be put in this
conference!) His neighbor is a friend of my vet's assistant, so we
found out about them thru the assistant.

The first cat is a real cutie. Very skittish & timid, but also very
spunky and crazy at times. I think it's a girl. Her temporary name
for the time being is "the black one" or "Zelda". She is all black,
with a white mustache and bib, exceptionally long white whiskers,
white back legs and front feet that look as those her toes were painted
on the ends. She has very big copper colored eyes. She's capable of
making all kinds of strange chirping sounds that we never new a cat
could make! The only time she'll come to you is if you shake the can
of Pounce treats. Then again, we call her something new every time we
see her so perhaps she's confused. :^)

The second, well, let's just say we are thinking of calling him Chubs,
Shamu, Orca, Bubba, Oppih (hippo backwards), etc. He weighs a whopping
17 1/2 pounds, perhaps more! My guess is he's a Maine Coon. After
reading so many cat descriptions and comparing pictures, it's hard to
say. Underneath all that matted fur is a very lovable and FAT cat. He
is the friendlier of the two, loves attention and loves to purr,
especially in the middle of the night! He has this tendency to roll
around and lay on his back. Because he's so fat, he reminds us of a
turtle cause he has a hard time flipping back over. :^) :^) If you
can picture a bowling ball with a tail and four toothpicks sticking
out, you'll understand just how round Chubs is. He sounds like a small
child thumping up the stairs so we usually are warned when he's coming
towards us! He is mostly white on the bottom with a dark tail, face
and a big splash of mixed colors across his back. He has green eyes.

Meanwhile, Lea (my husbands cat for 10 years) is frantic! She is a
mean Siamese that wants to be the only cat in the house. You can
currently find her hiding under the bureau in the bedroom. Just listen
    for the hissing....

My husband insists we can only keep one of these cats but I can't stand
the thought of separating them. I told him we should get rid of Lea.
:^) For now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they both grow on him
quickly or I find some creative way to keep them both together.

5.26Lea needs some understandingMUTTON::BROWNTue Jan 21 1992 13:0813
    Cheryl,

Give Lea some room. She has two strange cats to deal with in *her*
home. I would definitely recommend keeping Zelda and Chubs separated
in a room by themselves for at least 10 days, until you can verify that
they have no contagious illnesses like URI, FeLV, FIV, etc. This would
give Lea a chance to warm up to the idea and not feel so threatened.
You can't expect her to greet them with open arms, she is probably
feeling a little displaced. With the right kind of encouragement, you
should be able to eventually get them all to cohabitate peacefully and
then you could probably talk hubby into keeping both Chubs and Zelda.

Beth Rollins of 4.49 was kind enough to let me adopt 2 of her orange
    females, 10 weeks old.

It will probably take a few days for them to get used to their new
environment before they show their personalities. When they do I will
introduce them to you. I will let you know they have a set of lungs on
    them!

Their names are Scotch and Soda.

We just adopted a 6+ month old cat. Cost $20 but we got $15 back for neutering.
Also got 10 lbs of free food. The best part about his age was that we were
able to get familiar with his personality before hand. We were real paranoid
about scratching and ripping our house to shreads. NO Problems! doesn't
even use claws when we dig his belly. Also loves to go for car rides. Just
sits on my shoulders gawking out the window.

    	Hi,

I would like to bring attention to note 33.11.

This pretty kitty is looking for a good home. Ziggy's
owner has taken ill and can no longer care for her.

The reason I am trying to bring attention to this note is
because Ziggy's foster mom has called several shelters, the
Humane Society and several "no kill" shelters. No one is
willing to take her because she is 11 years old. They all
say it is too hard to place an older cat and the cat would
wind up being put to sleep. (except for the no kill shelters
who just say they don't have room for a cat this age)

I've met Ziggy, and she is a lovable, healthy, very good looking
    	cat.

It was a very emotional breakup when her owner of 11 years
could no longer take care of her. I would really like to
be able to help her find a home.

If anyone out there can think of anyone who can take her
    	it would be much appreciated.

Ziggy is living in Central Massachusetts.

Thankyou for any help you can offer.

5.42Muffin and her momICS::JOHNSONLFri Mar 27 1992 12:3231
A few months ago I posted a note about Muffin, a three-year old cat,
who needed foster care when her mom got sick and went into the
hospital. Well, I wanted to give an update on Muffin and her mom.

Muffin's mom has a disability that won't make it possible for her to
live by herself anymore. She's now in a rest home, feeling better, but
frustrated that she can't live on her own anymore. She misses Muffin.

My friend has been foster-parenting Muffin for the last few months.
Muffin has been a real champ weathering all the changes she's had to go
through. Not only did she lose her mom, but my friend moved to a new
home while he was fostering her. So poor Muffin had to get used to a
couple new environments and a new care taker. But she's so easy going
that even though she was scared at first with each change, she adapted
pretty quickly and set about establishing her favorite places and play
    toys.

Well, since decision was recently made that my disabled friend can't move
back to her house, it's definite that I have to find Muffin a permanent
home. I put a note in the "Cats Needing Homes" (number 4) file. It's
number 81 (or thereabouts). So if you're interested you can get the
    details in there.

I'd be very grateful if there are any interested people out there.
Being Muffin's loving aunt, I'm very dedicated to her welfare, and I'm
so afraid she'll end up in an animal shelter. I don't know if she'd be
able to weather that change very well.

Please contact me at DTN 223-9618 or ICS::JOHNSONL if you can help.

5.43The saga of SophieMODEL::CROSSThu Apr 09 1992 09:0947
I wanted to enter a special thanks to all those people who responded to
my note in the CATS NEEDING HOMES, note number .93. I never expected
to find such a group of wonderful, caring people as I did in this
FELINE file. So a special thanks to Karen Kolling, Lenora Palmer,
Lynne Mandile, and Yvonne Colaianni for their help with the little
tortie stray who was found two days ago in the woods around the MRO
facilities. Your generosity, time and advice made the rescue of this
cat so much easier for both myself and Nancy DC.

Just an update. Yvonne and I attempted to bring this tortie back to
the site where we first found her, in the hopes that if she had a
litter of kittens, she would lead us to them. We spent over an hour
within the 1/2 mile radius surrounding this spot. But no luck. We had
her on a collar and leash and she ACTUALLY let us WALK her. She didn't
even seem to notice that she was even wearing them. She walked beside
us, sat in the sun, and seemed totally unconcerned about whether there
may be a litter out there or not. At times she would attempt to
venture out on her own, but only to go down to the marshlands and sniff
reeds and "hunt." It became apparant after 45 minutes that if there
were a litter it was grown or dead, or that if they were alive, she was
probably too far off course to ever find them. She seemed "lost"
    herself.

It hurts me to think there may be babies out there somewhere waiting
for a mother that will never come back. I should add that a couple of
times while we were walking along a stone wall or going down into
clumps of reeds, she would cry pitifully .... but nothing. No
answering mews to her cries. It really broke my heart. I don't know,
never having seen nursing mother cats before, if they feel loss or if
they feel anything close to "love" for their babies so that they would
experience a sense of "loss", but if they do, she did.

I intend to walk again by that area today in the hopes I will hear some
kittens...but I don't hold out much hope. I want to thank Yvonne for
coming with me, and marching uncomplainingly through thorns and
brambles and swamp mud that came up to her ankles. You're a real
    trouper, Yvonne! :-)

Nancy, I think I may change this kitten's name to Sophie..... she
seems to be a tragic heroine to me now.... :-) (But then, aren't all
    the strays in the world!)?

I will keep everyone posted on her progress. (Moderators, I didn't
know where to put this, didn't want to clutter up the file on CATS

    Hi All!

It was truly amazing to watch Sophie walk on the leash like it was the
most natural thing shecould do! I'm still in awe! She seemed to enjoy
being out in the fresh air, but none too concerned that there was a
special reason for her being in that particular spot.

Nancy DC, I thnk Sophie is a great name for this little girl! She is
such a love! She a little straggly right now, but when she fills out,
and her coat get back into condition, she's going to be a knock out!

I enjoyed my little outing yesterday with Nancy. I got to meet her
four kitties, and the new little girl. She's done quite a job with her
ferel Suki (?). I had the privilege of having her give my hand head
bumps, and letting me love her up a little bit! I was thrilled! Anyway,
a little muck for the sake of a furface is not a hardship!

Thanks again Nancy for taking her in to get her health back. I have a
feeling Sophie may already be home! ;-)

5.47Foxes.... not Sophie's choice....MODEL::CROSSThu Apr 09 1992 15:2344
Today at lunch I trudged back to the site where I had found Sophie. If
there were kittens, I was determined to find them. I stopped at the
old Jackson Farm (I grew up with Linda Jackson and so I felt brave
enough to go to the door). Her husband told me that they had many barn
cats, but no litters at this time. He also said his cats were too
feral to come near humans, being 4th generation rat cats. But he DID
tell me of an abandoned farm just a 1/4 mile down on the right. This
farm turned out to be only 30 yards or less from where I'd found
Sophie. I looked through ever barn and shack and abandoned car and
tire on the place....finally I found a small chicken shack that had a
dirt floor. There were many prints....small cat prints, and larger
dog-type prints....there were deep holes dug into the ground throughout
this building. But no kittens....I meowed my head off, but no
response. I left the building and crested small hill on the farm and
kept meowing but nothing still. I looked to my left and there was
this crew of guys watching me from the shipping dock of a company about
50 feet away. I was MORTIFIED. So in my usual confrontative fashion,
I approached them and asked them if they had seen kittens. They smiled
when they understood what I was doing. But one of them said, "How long
ago did you pick up the mother?" I told him it was two days back. He
replied, "Well, if there were kittens, they are probably dead by now.
There are two foxes out her playing in the field every morning."

I felt so badly. I am almost certain in my heart that this must be
true. I had seen mingled paw prints in the barn.... I have decided to
stop looking for the kittens. If I don't assume that they are dead,
then I will drive myself crazy and keep looking for them, day in and
day out, for the rest of my life! I'm like that....I never give up
hope usually and I have been known to "beat a dead horse," so to speak.

I am going to go home tonite and just lavish all my attention
on Sophie, fatten her up, get her healthy, give her all the care and
    love she desparately needs.

If she did lose her kittens in this cruel way, by foxes, it must have
been devastating standing by and knowing there was nothing she could
do. She probably left them when she found they were dead and started
her little trek down the road to where I found her...

The strong smell of urine is due to the fact that he is a maturing male
and is not neutered. Neutering will remove that musky male smell. If
his owner can't afford the neutering, there are organizations that can
help with the cost. I don't recall where you are located, but there
are three clinics in the San Jose area that charge less than $25 for
neutering, and one will cover the entire cost if the owner can't pay.

Hi Yvonne, well that would have been wonderful yesterday because it
sure was depressing when I found the prints....and then it seemed that
at that exact moment (around 12:45) the sky literally clouded over and
the wind picked up and that was even MORE depressing. But I went home
last nite and there was Sophie's little face peering through the window
that separates my kitchen from the porch....she had climbed up on the
ledge and I was standing at the sink and we were face to face and she
let out a big MEEEOOOWWWWWWWW...mouth big as a house in that little
    pointed face. I died laughing....

I made her a bigger cushy-er bed last nite of quilts and a hot water
bottle and erected a tent-like cover over it with towels.....then I put
my old favorite red unwashed terry bathrobe at the entrance... in the
a.m. I found her huddled on the bathrobe...not in her tent with the
bed....and she had collected several clothespins and a toy ball and was
sleeping with them by her side. What a love....

    that food.

Any suggestions? He's eating 9 Lives wet food now, I believe. I always

I find that feeding the main part of the diet as dry food (Iams, Max,

makes for less odor and less "volume" in the litter box.

had enlarged glands or some such thing....I can't remember

dry and that there was really no need to feed wet at all. I've taken
all my four off wet completely and I mix Science Diet, IAMS, and MAX

Here's an update on Jack, the male orange tiger looking for a home.
We took him to the vet's last night, he's just out of surgery
(neutered) and he's doing fine! He's now all caught up on shots
    and ready to go.

And....he has a wonderful new home. On Saturday, he will join a new
family with a nice person and other kitties, and plenty of room to
roam indoors and out. Just the life for a free spirit like Jack.

Thanks to everyone and to this file!

5.63Muffin - Cat shelterICS::JOHNSONLWed Apr 22 1992 12:5319
    Hi folks,

Recently I wrote about Muffin who became homeless a few months ago
after her owner was put in a rest home. Well, after months of trying
to find her a permanent home, I've had no luck, so I'm now looking into
animal shelters. I don't know anything about them. Of course, I want
to find the most humane, high-quality shelter, with the least amount of
animals. I don't want Muffin to get traumatized, as she has always lived
in a decent home with no other cats.

I'm looking for a shelter located in Massachusetts anywhere as east
as Sudbury and as west as Leominster.

Can anyone shed some light on cat shelters or what some alternatives
    are?

    Thanks much.

    Leslie

I think one of the major roadblocks you will hit is that most of
the better shelters (especially no-kill) are full to the maximum
at this time of year. It is kitten season.....

Sure hope Muffin finds a wonderful home...or atleast a temporary home
in a nice no-kill shelter. I volunteer at the Pat Brody Shelter...but
I do know they are at the max...but if you were to call they might
be able to put you on a waiting list. If you want more info...you
    can contact me off-line.

5.66A happy ending for kitten in 4.98FSOA::DHALLJust another day in the jungleTue Apr 28 1992 11:2926

I want to report a happy ending for an abandoned kitten. I
entered a note (4.98) for my brother about a kitten that he
found. This little guy is a sweetheart with a wonderful
personality. Unfortunately, he was unable to keep him because
his wife's allergies were too severe.

They were contacted by a representative of Friends of Animals.
This person found out about this kitten through this notes
conference. I would like to thank whoever pointed this note
    to Friends of Animals.

On Saturday afternoon, I brought this little guy to Rachel from
Friends of Animals. This was the first time that I saw him and
he was wonderful. Rachel fell in love with him as well. She told
me that she had an adoption lined up for him. He was exactly the
type of kitten this woman is looking for.

So now this kitten (named Ken by my nephew) has a new home in Acton
    with a loving mommy.

I would like to thank everyone who expressed an interest in this
little guy. I am relieved that this little one who had a tough
start by being abandoned at the side of the road has found a happy
    and loving home.

    Re: 5.43

I wanted to update everyone on Sophie. Today Sophie was spayed,
and though she is groggy, the vet says she is doing well. She has had
her second round of shots and her second wormer. She was also treated
for tapeworm, and a couple weeks back she was given bloodtests for
kidney disorders. Though her kidneys were fine, she was found to have a
slightly enlarged liver and some infection, so I was given treatment
for her and she is doing better. I am about to pick her up now, and
am very excited about her progress....

Therefore, thank you to the following people:

Nancy DC, who, though she never said a word, spoke volumes
when I was making the decision to pick her up off the street
    	  that day we found her....

Yvonne Colaianni, for that late great trek we took in search
of Sophie's kittens, which proved unfruitful except for the
case of poison sumac I acquired, and the colds we probably
    	  both acquired...

And to Karen Kolling, Lynne Mandile, Bill Kowalkowski, Lenora
Palmer, Mary Colwill and Jill Meier, for your generosity in
both food and money donations that helped to put Sophie back
on her feet. If Sophie had not found Nancy DC and I when
she did, and without your help and compassion, I am certain
that today Sophie would not be alive.

So "head butts" from Sophie, and thanks again from me.

    Nancy
5.68Sound normal to meSOLVIT::IVESTue May 05 1992 13:3710
Spooky sounds like he is living the perfectly normal cats life
to me. Most cats sleep all day when we are away at work, (if you
don't believe me stay home from work one day, sleep, sleep, sleep,)
and become love bugs with us at night.

If the reason you really want to get him a new home is loneliness
why not get him a companion? (That way they will BOTH sleep all
    day.)

5.70JUPITR::KAGNOKitties with an AttitudeWed May 06 1992 10:1811
I think this is a hard enough decision for Linda as it is, without
folks trying to convince her of other alternatives. I'm sure she has
taken the time to think this through. Some cats just don't do well
without a lot of human contact, and she knows what is best for Spooky.

A second cat seems out of the question if she is already having
financial difficulties. Although two are not always more expensive
than one, it can be if the second cat needs veterinary care. We all
know how unforseen circumstances can arise, being multi-cat owners
    ourselves.

Many thanks to this note file for introducing us to the newest member
    of our family.

We very excitedly adopted the Maine Coon cat from the Northboro
Hospital. He is the reincarnation (it's spooky, he's so similar) of
Barnabus, the last cat who owned us. They would even be the same age.

Rutherford is starting to feel at home, although he still spends most
of the day under the beds, coming out once our toddler and preschooler
have gone down for the night. Abby, my 4-year-old, keeps asking when he
will REALLY be part of the family and want to be with us all the time.
I hope he will soon, and that he's just still adjusting -- not that he
doesn't like children. Have any of you had experience with integrating
a 6-year-old cat into your household?

    Thanks again,

Well Misha has been with me since Friday night (Sam had business travel
he had to do). I've given Misha the full run of the house. He hasn't
sprayed once. Of course he's spent a lot of time under the sofa but so
far no spraying. I have a very dominant female, Adelaide, who laid
down the law the first time she saw him. :^)

Misha is gorgeous and such a love bug. I was sitting on the sofa
knitting when I felt something against the back of my leg. I looked
down expecting to see Alpo my kitten, nope it was Misha pushing with
his head. He wanted to come out from under the sofa. He LOVES to have
his tummy scratched. He's coming out more and more.

Things are going very well. I'll keep you updated.

Every now and then I hear about purebred cats that have suddenly had
their circumstances change, and are looking for new homes. Sometimes
the situation is desperate and a new home must be found right away.
Just this week, this situation has come to my attention three separate
times. I just wanted to make sure that folks know that if the breeder
you bought the cat from is worth his/her salt, they will take that cat
in rather than see it end up in a shelter or be put to sleep. So
please, when you hear of purebreds that are looking for new homes,
please remind the owners that a call should be made to the breeder of
    that cat.

And, by all means, if you are purchasing a cat from a breeder, ask
them if you ever found yourself in a position where you couldn't keep
the cat, if they would offer any assistance in either finding it a new
home, or taking it in until a home could be found.

    	MISHA HAS A NEW HOME!!!!!!!!!

My babysitter and her boyfriend just fell in love with him and will be
taking him in a few weeks to his new home. (they are in the process of
moving into a new apartment). They deliberately went hunting for an
apartment that would let them have Misha.

He's such a love I'm going to miss him. He hasn't sprayed once since
I've had him and I don't think there will be any problems at his new
home. Last night I was working on a latch hook rug, Alpo was attacking
the other end of it. So I just ignored the little kitty face at the
end. Then it dawned on me, sometime during the past few minutes the
kitty had changed. It was Misha waiting patiently for me to move the
rug. As soon as I did WHUMP!!!!!!! 14 1/2 lbs of kitty landed in my
lap. :^) There's nothing like a little fuzz therapy!

Folks,

I thought I'd let you know about the successful 'placement' of KeeKeeman,
who appeared in our adoption note (was 4.222...I've deleted it). Julie and
Dennis Gagnon needed to find a home for KeeKeeman because Dennis' allergies
had gotten very bad. Julie found an elderly lady who was looking for a
nice kitty companion and KeeKeeman went to his new home last Thursday.
Well, Julie and Dennis spent the weekend in tears and last Saturday, they
took KeeKeeman back home. Their house is now wall-to-wall air cleaners and
they're going to try the cat-bath method to see how it goes, but poor Dennis
felt he was more miserable without his little guy than he was with him, so
KeeKeeman is home to stay...

tell Julie to look for double filtered bags for her vacuum cleaner...and to
vacuum often. Along with baths, this will help more than ANYTHING else....
In fact, have her scan the allergies note for vacuum cleaner info - the
reports I'm getting about the Bravo are all very positive - that machine
makes a BIG difference in the environment of those with allergies.

I'll second the Bravo. In my case, it's my cat Sweetie who has an

within a few hours. And, each adopter signed one of my pet contracts
agreeing to keep them inside, and spay and neuter them, and each gave
me a $25 donation to St. Francis of Assisi Animal Rescue. St. Francis
had graciously done the kitten's FeLV tests and shots for free so
giving them the $75 made me feel great.

up to date on his hots? sounds a little risque!

Maybe this has been mentioned before (but I'll mention it
again anyway). I read somewhere that regular bathing (of

Well, I don't want to clutter up the adoption note with more on
Ariel and Molly but I don't really know where to put this. I
know, I'm the moderator. I'm supposed to know where things go.
    Anyway...

I finally managed to get my hands on Ariel this morning at approx.
2:00am. He's been scarce since the work neuter entered my vocabulary.
Both Molly and Ariel went to the vet this morning. Molly received both
her Distemper/Upper Respiratory vaccine and her Rabies vaccine before
we decided we should have waited till we saw the results of her FELV
test before vaccinating her. Both Ariel and Molly are being tested
for FELV and Feline Aids. If the tests come back negative Molly will
be spayed and Ariel will be neutered and he will receive his vaccines.
Both of them have ear mites and will be treated for those.

If the tests come back positive I don't think I want to have to deal
with it. Homes for cats testing positive are not as easy to come by.
Keep your fingers crossed. I've gotten very attached to these two
and I don't want to have to make this decision. I should know later
today what the results are. If they are negative the spay/neuter
will be done today and I'll pick them both up from the vet tomorrow.

This is costing a fortune. If it wasn't for the donations I received
and the animal birth control coupons, I don't know how I'd do this.
Thanks so much for being so generous.

Re: Ariel and Molly Adoption note 4.270, Response note 5.103

Ariel and Molly have received their Distemper/Upper Respiratory
vaccine and Rabies vaccine. They tested negative for both Feline
Leukemia and Feline Aids (YEAH!!!). Molly was spayed and Ariel
was neutered. Both are being treated (for the next 3 weeks) for
earmites. The vet is planning his vacation based on Molly and
Ariel's bill. ;^) Many thanks to the donors for their help with
    this cost.

If all goes as planned, Ariel and Molly will be moving into a new
home in 3-4 weeks. Their potential parents are waiting for escrow
to close and to find out their move-in date for their new house.
The potential mom and dad will be coming over to meet their new
babies this Thursday (if schedules work out).

Until they go to their new home, Ariel and Molly are living in the
bathroom suite at the Cordes family apartment. They're reasonably
content to have the space to themselves, however, they would like
to take over the rest of the house if they were not living under
quarantine conditions due to earmites and the chance they might be
carrying colds or whatever that haven't shown up yet. They happily
wake me up at 4-5am for attention by knocking over everything on
the bathroom counter and meowing at the top of their lungs. They
know exactly what time meals are supposed to be served and do not
let me forget it if I am late. I'm getting very attached to these
two and am hoping this adoption works out so I won't be too far
    from them.

Molly has taken to trying to nursing on Ariel's chest or stomach.
He is really good with her. He just grooms her and lets her nurse.
I guess he knows she's just needing some security. Both are very
demanding of attention and affection. Molly meows at me until I
pet her and Ariel stretches his long body up and gives me a nose-
to-nose kiss. Both kitties are desperately in need of a flea bath
and will receive one as soon as they are recovered completely from
their respective surgeries. I, personally, cannot wait for this to
happen as I am highly allergic to something they have in their fur.

I am pleased to announce the Ariel and Molly have new parents.
They will be moving into a brand new home in just a few weeks
(when the move in date is set for their new family). The proud
parents are Christina and Steven Wilder. Christina works in my
    building here in WRO3.

Christina has added FELINE to her notebook and you should see
her introduction in here some time in the future. The cat introduction
will probably have to come later since she has only had 1-1/2 hours
to get to know them at this time.

Again, I'd like to thank everyone who assisted me in my efforts
to take these two in, get them neutered/spayed and declared healthy
and find them homes. You all have been wonderful.

Oh, I have invited Christina and Steven to join us at the West Coast
Feliner dinner in October if it doesn't conflict with their plans to
    move.

"Whitey" has gone to a good home where he is getting used to 3 other
brother and sisters.

Since it looks like Keith's uncle will not make it home from the hospital,
we picked up "Big Red" this week-end while we were out there and brought
him back. He snoozed through the 5+ hour trip with the door to the carrier
open, and the only time he jumped out was to use his litter box! What a
trooper! He has a few fleas, so he is off to the vets today for a flea
bath and a check for worms. We have found him a good home too.......

............he's staying with us ;-}

yes, yes, yes, I said no more cats, I said no more neutered male cats,
I said my asthma is better, my alleriges are better, the house is cleaner,
I'm spending less on food..... but his master is dying, he had no where
to go, he was *so quiet and so good* the whole ride home, he is *so*
loving, he doesn't seem to mind staying indoors all that much and where
else can I find a cat that plant himself on the top of my shower curtain
in a single jump and shred my toilet paper? Most people have to *pay* for
that kind of entertainment!

5.113Update on JOJO from a previous noteSNAX::SMITHI FEEL THE NEEDThu Oct 15 1992 08:5058
Well, after entering my note in the "HELP I don't know what to do" note
about JOJO and her seizure while trying to get her home, I just thought
I'd update everyone on the situation.

As you may recall, we set her up in the garage and she was doing just
fine. She slept in her bed and would let you pet her and would purr
etc. Well, after a couple of days, I decided that I'd carry her outside
and give her some fresh air. I had to bring the rubbish barrels in
anyway. We ended up with a rather major set back with me coming out on
the short end of the stick. I had moved the barrels right up to the
garage door so I wouldn't have to go too far. I was holding JOJO up
against my chest and when I hit the button to open the garage door,
she didn't like that one little bit. But, I was able to control her
and still hang onto her. I brought the barrels in but felt she was a
little to nervous to be standing round outside so I canned that idea.
Went back into the garage and hit the button again.

This time, JOJO "freaked". She wanted down in the worst way, but with
the door still open she would have been gone like a shot so I held on.
She didn't like that one little bit either. She got turned around in
my arms so that she was facing me. I won't go into all the details,
but suffice it to say that she clamped onto my nose and wasn't about
to let go. I had a perfect dental impression on the old shnoz. I was
bleeding all over the place and if I had let her go, she would have
been swinging from my nose. One fang went right through the side of
my nose. I REALLY wasn't looking for a pierced nose at this point in
my life. I litterally had to stick my thumb in her mouth to pry her
off. When I finally got her to let go, and got up off my knees, she
went to her bed and I went to the bathroom to bleed in peace.

I called the doctor and was on an antibiotic within an hour. I went to
the hospital the next day and got a tetenus (sp?) shot. My nose swelled
up like a balloon. I looked like I had just gone 12 rounds with Mike
Tyson AND LOST. It never got any worse than that and now after 2 and
a half weeks, people just think I had a minor accident rather than
getting hit in the face by a Mac truck. Of course, when I came back to
work I had to put up with a ration of you know what. Things like,"well
that will teach you to keep your NOSE out of her business".

Anyway, there was a few days where there was a trust issue between the
two of us, but that's all settled down now. We've moved her into the
basement where she picked out her own bed up on some boxes. She has
some toys down there that she loves to play with and she comes over to
be petted whenever I go down there.

We took her to the vet and got her all checked out. She had her shots
and got tested for feline lukemia and aids. Both were negative. She's
as healthy as a horse. After spending about 6 months outside 24 hours
a day, she didn't even have anything in her ears.

Lately we've let her up into the house and it took her about 30 seconds
to find the bed to curl up on. There has been no introduction problems
with the other 3 kids as they knew each other (through the screen) all
summer. She'll even submit to a belly rub now and then.

We still havn't been able to find her a home, but who the hell am I
kidding.........she IS home. Allow me to introduce you to our newest
    kid.....JOJO.

I am very happy to report that the cat I wrote about in 4.302 has been
adopted by a DECcie here in Santa Clara. It's a great story. A few
day ago Linda was thinking that she would like to adopt a cat. A
couple of days later she decided she wanted a black and white cat. She
walked into the ladies room and saw the flyer about this black and
white cat. The owner brought the cat to Linda's and it was love at
first sight. He rubbed her legs and then rolled over to have his tummy
    rubbed.

Another somewhat successful story .. 3 of the four kittens in .280 have

Unfortunately, there was one kitten left for quite a while. In talking
to my friend on Friday, they hadn't seen the kitten for a while. They
went searching for it and found it about 1/4 mile away, dead on the
    train tracks. )-:

But, three of the four DID find a wonderful caring home .. one through
    this file!!

Also, the mother is still up for adoption. She's a beautiful

He had been adopted by a couple of families but they said Sir Thomas
didn't get along with their cats. However, they only had him for a few

each other and get the pecking order established.

was 9 months old and beautiful. He was under a *death notice* which we
had communicated to 6-months in *prison* or a *half-way-house* (mine).

Smoki survived the quarantine and turned into the most beautiful male
cat. He is now 15 months old and has a wonderful, loving home with my
oldest daughter. She is a *sucker* like her mother and didn't want him

just fine. Smoki adores my grand-son (a 2-year old) and sleeps with

I took the little black guy and named him Othello. He was tiny

	He's my back-up alarm clock...if I don't get up at 6, he stands on

5.134A new home for CameoWR1FOR::RUSSELLPE_STFri Feb 12 1993 12:3315
I just wanted to let you all know that the cat I wrote about in 4.362,
now has a wonderful home. She has been adopted by Joy, one of our
instructors in Educ. & Training. Joy walked by my desk on Tuesday and
I asked her if she would be interested in Cameo, and she said that she
almost went to the pound last week to get a cat. She went to the
foster parent's home that evening and it was love at first sight for
Cameo and Joy. I spoke to Joy yesterday and she was just beaming. She
said Cameo is so good, no bad habits, she seems to understand English,
she's slept with Joy and seems very comfortable in her new home. Bob
and I are just thrilled. (Our cats if they knew, would be too, since
that means they won't have to share us with another cat ;-).)

Goldie has finally gone to her new home with Sina Klein!! I think when
Sina came in and saw Goldie, she fell in love. Goldie posed for a few
last pictures, one with a hat on. She looked as beautiful as she
could, we were all impressed. I will be checking on her in a few days
to see that the transition went well. Gonna miss her..

I guess. I never heard of them either, they are supposed to be rare in

The owners are Judy and Dick Allen. I don't know anything else about

The cat will grow to 13-16 lbs. He is tabby blue with black spots.
his stomach is cream colored with black spots. For any more

    RE:-1

My first hand experience with bringing kitties into a house hold with
dog is it *will* definately work out. Now it is harder in my opinion
to introduce a new dog to a cat dominated house.
My roommate had a German, I had a Keeshond when we brought in new cat.
If the kitty is introduced to dog in the house with your supervision
your dog will be only more curiouse at first, chances are it will not
harm the kitty. Especialy little kittens. The kitty will probably hiss
at the Dog and if the dog gets too close might scratch its nose. Maybe
its possible to involve a second person in the household to hold the
dog on leash and kitty free to run and hide eventually they will
become friends. With adult cats it might take longer but...

If a dog already does not like cats (and "does not like" can
be anything from avoiding them, chasing them, or killing them),
then bringing home a kitten that has already been tramatized by
a dog is not, IMHO, a good idea.

I just wanted to put in an update on the kitty that Nancy Cross put in
    note .383, Abby.

We took her to the shelter, where she was very lovable to everyone, and
a VERY nice lady looked at her, and sort of decided she wanted a
'younger' cat, until one of our volunteers had her hold Abby.

It was immediate love! Abby went home with this lady, who promised that
our girl would be spoiled rotten, and we believe it! ;-)

I'm curious as to when a certain person with a cat named Snuggles is
going to post that this certain kitty, will be going to her new home
Saturday, to live with a certain non DECcie, who looked for a cat in
these notes, throuhj Karen Kolling, and then me.

Snuggles' new person contacted me today to thank me for leading her to
her new furface, and is very much looking forward to Saturday. She has
also invited me to visit, and meet her and Snuggles! I accepted, and
when Snuggles is settled in, I will go see her, and give a new report!

So, Cathie, are you going to post anything? Maybe I should have waited,
but I was too excited when Nancy contacted me! ;-)

Well, chalk up more adoption news .... not ONE, not TWO, but THREE
adoptions in our house these past 3 weeks, all out of the Pat Brody
shelter !!! My roommate adopted a 5-1/2 month old male (a real beauty
named Lipton) and just Tuesday night, I adopted a pair of sister kitties,
about 9 weeks old !!!!! And yes, I'm finally going to be putting something

    Denise,

I'm not sure which shelter your friend adopted her new cat from, but
all the shelters I know of have a clause that if it doesn't work out,
they will take the cat back. Framingham Animal Humane Society will take
them back years later if the person has to surrender them for any
    reason.

I hope she can find a real home for this guy, because I've seen how
depressed cats can get when they have tp go back. (This is why I have
three now!) But it's an alternative if all else fails, to bring the cat
back tot he shelter. Unless it's not no kill of course! ;-)

    Hope this helps.

    Yonee
5.150PARITY::DENISEAnd may the traffic be with youFri Apr 30 1993 17:405
She doesn't want to bring the cat back to the shelter as it is NOT
a no-kill shelter and she is afraid of what may happen if he is
returned. Luckily, it appears Uncle may have a new home!

5.151The Colonel RespondsJURAN::BITTICKSThu Jul 22 1993 13:2022
The Honorable Colonel Sebastian Moran, DROFFC, salutes his diminutive
brothers and points out that he, too, is a Wobbly Kitty. He moves in
exactly the same way as the kitties mentioned above. He can get up on
a chair, and from the chair onto a table, but cannot jump from the
floor to a table. He can maneuver very well (when he so desires). I
have a picture of him on my end table sitting right in the middle of my
Easter display with nothing - the tree or the flowers - disturbed.

He came into a house that already had a 40 pound dog and a 170 pound
dog. He had some experience of dogs, but not of the latter's size. He
was not only undisturbed by this, but he rules the roost - which now
includes a 150 pound 9 month old pup.

The Colonel begs prospective parents not to be deterred by wobbliness.
He has never had a litter box accident and has never given me one
minute of regret for allowing myself to be adopted by him.

The Colonel would be delighted to field any questions prospective
    parents might have.

    Regards,
Sari, permanent undersecretary to The Honorable Colonel.

If your cats are going to be indoor/outdoor, you won't get anywhere
	near as much hair indoors.

They love rolling on grass, rubbing against trees, rolling in dirt, and
this helps "shed" a lot of loose hair.

You will probably find that the hair from four indoor/outdoor cats is
the same, or even less, than the hair from 4 indoor cats.

Well. We trundled off southwards into the dreaded and alien
Massachusetts countryside, eventually arriving at the Central
Animal Hospital where we met met Linda, who showed us into a
comfortable inspection chamber which, to our amazement, already
contained a cat - Dusty. We made friends.

Eileen showed up with <as_yet_unnamed>, so I stayed where I
was, on the floor and the next thing I knew was that
<as_yet_unnamed> was in my lap, on the floor with his motor
running - head butts - drools - this was an unfriendly cat. He
climbed on Sandy and gave her several licks along with a pint
or so of drool - he doesn't like her - his purr was saying
"gawd, yer 'orrible - I'll drool on you!" And he did. A most
        unaffectionate cat.

Poor little bugger was tripping all over his redundant paw on
the polished floor, but took advantage of the disability to
fall over and expose his belly to be rubbed, with an expression
that clearly told us that if he'd had two working front paws,
he'd wave them both if we'd just rub his tum and admire his
        purring power.

Ice-Kitty is younger than Dolly. He's probably a year old or
just slightly under a year. Don't know Dolly's age.

He's really tugging at my heart strings, Steffi. He looks so
pitiful out there sitting under the lawn chair watching the rain.

Most of the other cats have already claimed the good, dry sleeping
spots I provide. I've been trying to entice him into sleeping in the
storage cabinet (the door is propped open) on the 2nd shelf. There's
a black, furry, round cushion there and I put Bailey's old blue cat
bed in there. He didn't seem interested at first but when I went
out to feed kitties this morning I think that's where he appeared
    from.

You and Bob are welcome to come over some time and meet the foster
kitty family. I'm certain that both Dolly and Ice will be easily
accessible. The rest you'll probably have to view from the distant
side of the patio or from inside.

I guarantee you'll fall totally in love with the Ice-Man (maybe even
    Dolly too...she's a sweetie).

    Joyce,
Be very careful with the kitty. If you have other cats, he may have
a disease that is contagious. Taking him to the vet is the right thing
to do. Try to keep him confined to a small area like a large box.
This will keep him from hurting himself until then.

A kind heart is a wonderfule thing, but I might suggest that you
contact your local MSPCA first before taking it upon yourself to adopt
out the kittens, you could find yourself in the middle of a NASTY
situation, regardless of how your neighbor is abusing (yes, abusing)
the kittens. Ok, now, if you can whisk them away and find them homes
without the neighbor knowing - good luck. I'd open my house, but I am
in the position of trying to find my cat a home.

In my opinion, someone should shoot the &^%$ing neighbor.

Kris...it's very nice of you to try and help find homes for the

you'll be dealing with this same issue possibly three times a year.
(sigh) It makes me sick that they allow the female to continue to
have kittens; when they have kittens who need medical help already.

The sad part is if you do call the MSPCA...I would bet that the
cats/kittens would be put to sleep immediately because I know
most of all shelters are fulled to the limit!! Are there any
other organizations/shelters in your area that might go talk to

note...I just have a hard time figuring out how people can do
this. Will she be the one bringing the cat for the LAST ride to
    the vets???

Gordon...some suggestions come to mind but I'll tell you now it's
not east to find an adult cat a home in such a short time. You
could put a picture up at your vets with a sad story about Holly
asking for a new home. You can attempt to call no-kill shelters
but I know many of them are very overcrowded right now. (I do have
a list of some of them so if you needed it just let me know). OR
why can't you take her in the hotel to bide more time for you to

I haven't placed my kittens in this note file 4. for adoption, but I
did have great success in taking a polaroid photo of them and placed it
at the Humane Society, of the four I had left to find homes three were
taken from people seeing my ad. The two that went this weekend were
the runt and the big tough one, both males. I cried even though I
know they must have homes, I have to many. Will let you know when the
little girl has gone. This new picture should help place her and not
get hopes of anyone else up.

By the way this has been the best way for people to adopt kittens, they
see them in a photo and can tell that they are in good shape, plus
helps the humane society from the financial burdens.

5.211JUPITR::KAGNOWed Sep 28 1994 11:0018
Why let your cats breed if you have to take them to the Humane Society
if they can't be placed? It would be a lot cheaper and less
hearbreaking if you just spayed and neutered your pets. The shelters
are already bursting with unwanted animals. Why add more?

I know we sound preachy, but if you participate in here you will find
that as cat lovers, we always try to do the responsible thing for our
pets. Most everyone in here are strong advocates of spaying/neutering,
and that is because almost all of us have volunteered for shelters and
    witnessed the heartbreak that occurs.

I personally wouldn't want the responsibility of finding homes for
kittens. People will tell you what you want to hear, and it is
difficult to know if the kitten is truly going to a home where it will
be loved and cared for the rest of it's life.

I think you will notice my explanation to this in feliners note 15. and
the Humane Society didn't get the kittens. I placed a picture there
for people to see them. I do have the names and addresses of the folks
who took them and even went a step further to make sure they weren't
going to be harmed. I even went as far as to request the vets name
as to who they were taking them to be cared for so that there aren't
    more kittens running around town.

Mistakes happen and Ana's were a mistake and she is no longer having
kittens nor are the rest of them. I assume full responsability when it
comes to my pets as I do with the rest of my life. Ana went in when
the eight week nursing was finished.

Now that you have taken more time to explain your position, we
understand where you are coming from. The original message was very
unclear with a lot of holes and conclusions for us to jump to. Many of
us have been noting here since the file began in the mid-eighties, and
believe me we have seen and heard it all.

You sound very responsible and very caring. Try to see it from our
positions... as outsiders looking in. None of what you have recently
told us was conveyed in your first couple notes, and that is why we
    became reactive.

Luis,

I don't know if you're interested in trying to get the cat you already have used
to him, then they'd both have a playmate!

When I brought Gypsy ( a feral I trapped) into my house, my two cats wanted
nothing to do with him. I'd bring them into his room, and they'd hiss and spit
at him, even though he made it very obvious that he was submissive and wanted
to be their friend. After several months, I let him go. Big mistake, Buki
(my bully cat) terrorized him. I trapped him again, after near starvation,
and this time put him back in his own room, but put a hook on the door so the
door stayed open 1 1/2"s or so, it wouldn't open more or close while the hook
was on. After a couple of weeks, I noticed the cats were playing through the
door, and getting to know each other on their own terms. This time, when I
let Gypsy out into the house, there were no problems. All three cats are
getting along beautifully, except for Buki's occasional bullying. Might be
worth trying, if you have the desire and the extra room!

Good luck whatever you decide.

Laura

Don't think for a moment that we came to this decision lightly, or
without agonizing for several months over the right thing to do. We
both feel very strongly that once we've taken an animal into our homes
that we're responsible for it for the rest of their lives. We've tried
every option we could devise to keep this situation under control, but
we must acknowledge the following realities - at least, they're OUR
    realities:

    1. We can't permanently and effectively separate the cat from the
       dog(s).
    2. We can't guarantee that under the constraints of #1 the cat won't
be hurt by overly rough play.
    3. We can't adequately predict under what circumstances the cat will
feel trapped or threatened, prompting what for us has become an
unacceptably violent attack. The last one resulted in my getting
bitten and scratched in multiple places before I could isolate the
       cat.
    4. Although my wife and I both love animals of all sorts, we are
primarily dog people. It would be unfair to all of us (humans, cats,
       dogs) to ignore that preference.

We've come to the decision that the only way to fulfill our obligation
to this life that we took on - in retrospect a mistake that we
acknowledge and regret - is to do our best to find a safe and loving
home for her. Until we do, we'll continue to make her as content and
    comfortable as we can.

A temporary home has been found. Alex will be residing in
Berkeley for the next 9 months. His foster mom's name is
Charlotte (just like his real mom) and she already has two
    kitties of her own.

I am so relieved. I was trying to figure out how I could
take in just one more (with my 8) so that he wouldn't be
taken to the humane society to take his chances on being
    adopted.

Why does he have to displace his kitties? I'm sorry I've heard similar
stories before, but why do people have to displace their "kitty"
    babies for human ones?

He has had two other children since this is his third child. So why
does this justify the kitties who I assume have lived with him a long
    time to have to leave?

I know there are tough times with time to give our pets at times and I
stress myself out to hug & kiss my two boys and give the strays outside
a pat and a hug everytime I come home.

I was just asking and I wish for him and his "kitty" babies sake that
    all could live happily-ever after.

I cannot help -- wish I could-- I have two boys of my own and 8 strays

I hate it when poeple try to dump their responsibilites on others

Maybe he can teach his older children how to take care
of the cats. Cats are so easy to care for. My daughter
has been involved with the food distribution since she
was a toddler. The cats became wary of her when she
became mobile and that uncomfortable phase ended real
soon after the cats realized she had the food ration!

I hope he will consider keeping the cats, since the
hectic phase does go away - kids do grow up fast!
The cats sure can handle a little less affection in
the short term. My cats didn't want to stay inside
when my daughter was crawling or toddling around (they
had their tail yanked too many times!) That was 8-9
years ago and my daughter is the food queen!

  Eva,

Unfortunately, it sounds like they are just looking for an excuse to get
rid of the cats. I have a neighbor who got rid of two cats a couple of years
ago because they were just "too much work." She now has a new cat and a dog
(this is her third dog in five years). We're wondering just how long the
newest pets will last. Sometimes I just want to scream!

5.231"Happy Ending to !! HELP SAVE OUR LIVES STORY!!MPGS::SOUSATue Sep 26 1995 17:3654
A WONDERFUL success story in reference to Note 4.827 & 4.828.

The brother and sister cat who were going to be put to sleep
have been APDOPTED to a great family! I want everyone to know!

I had placed an add in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette on a
stray cat that I was trying to find a home for. Well, yesterday
I received a call asking about the add .... after talking to them
I suggested not so much my stray but the brother & sister cats.
Here's why .... Ironically, the adoptive family had three children
2 years old, 7 years old, and 9 years old. They were looking only for
one indoor cat. But, when they met the two cats they fell in love with
BOTH of them which was a blessing. They looked like identical twins.
I think with them knowing what was going to happen to their lives in
the future they had no problem adopting the two together.

I called the new owners today and they said they are some c-o-o-l cats
big but cool! (12-15lbs each) Happily, the husband said "I like a big
cat!" The wife said she was going to bring them to the vets because they
needed their shots and she was going to take care of their fur knots and
fur balls. The new owners also have a live in person who takes care of
the children and house and she told me today she thinks their the best.
She can see they were lacking love and attention because the big boy cat
slept with her all last night. She said she noticed she started to sneeze
alot but isn't worried about it because she loves them. She mentioned
she wants to give them baths and comb out their fur to get out all the
dead fur dander. The children love them too, after all that is why the
mother was calling up looking to adopt a cat. The female cat is a
little shy & timid but that is how she always was I am told. But, the
boy cat lets the children lay and play with him and since they were
already declawed the family should have really no worries.

Their was one problem with the cats from before which probably won't
happen too much now. The family who had them were so busy that the
litter box was not always cleaned out and it was full alot of the times
causing the cats to look else where to go and they would urinate on the
floor and furniture and being that big there really should have been
two boxes. Well with the new family, I suggested trying two boxes and
that problem won't happen. The nanny or live in lady who is actually
the god-mother to one of the children said we are like the "Brady Bunch
Family" we are all one happy family living all together. You know she is
right she did sound alot like "Alice" on the Brady Bunch come to think of
it. --- Now, this group has a complete family with two new additions.
    Boy cat and Girl Kitty.

So thanks to everyone for all your support and advise. Just think it
all happened with an add in the local paper about "Smuckers" the lost
stray.... We'll he'll get a big hug tonight and I'll have to stop and
buy some Sheba cat food! Because of his add he saved two lives!!!

I hope I can find him the best home ever!!!

    That's wonderful.

At least there are some people out there that realize that animals do
    grow up.

My Mother has always ended up with unwanted cats and dogs, because as
she say's " Everybody loves Kittens and Puppies but an awful lot of
people don't like Cats and Dogs"

We have only had three cats and three dogs but they have all lived long
    and I hope happy lives.
There is no way we would have ever thought of getting rid of them
because of the way they behaved or because they were too much trouble.

We have a new kitten now and he is nuts, climbs walls, uproots plants
but of-course he is a kitten, we will look after him as we did the
others and hope he is willing to put up with us.

Looks like "Guinness", the stray cat at Oconnors restaurant in Worcester
has a new home. I managed to grab him last night and as I was putting
the carrier back in the car to take him home, a waitress in the
restaurant came out to ask me about him. Seems she has seen me capture
the cat and she wanted to say good bye to him. She said that she had been
also been leaving food and trying to capture the cat. I told her the cat
would be available for adoption. She immediately indicated she would

I've been feeding and trying to find this cat (not a kitten
just a cat that hadn't eaten well for at least three weeks before
    I started feeding her)
a home and after 3 weeks I was ready to give up. I placed an ad
in notes, asked around, was reading the local papers lost and found
and calling people with lost cats and if their cats wern't
found seeing if they wanted this one. I also put an ad in
the local paper. Last night a guy calls and said he lost his
grey tiger cat over a month ago well to make a long story short
he came over with a picture and after seeing the cat he wasn't
sure if htis was his. The picture was a little washed out from to
much light and this cat has been living outside for at least 6 weeks
so the colors seemed slightly different from the pic but their were
several markings that were the same (most notably two 1/2" verticle
black stripes one above each eye) then after hemming and hawing and
holding the cat for 10 minutes or so he decided yea this is my cat
and took it back home with him. He lives 12 miles away in the
    town next to mine.

I just wanted to let everyone know that Angel has been taken in
by Pet Network (a local rescue group). She is no longer at West
Valley Pet Shelter. I'm hopeful that this group will find her
    the loving home she deserves.

Apparently, Pet Network took several of the cats that West Valley
Pet Shelter had been holding on to for longer than a few months.

If you're in the Campbell area and have never checked this place
out let me tell you that they are wonderful people. They treat
me very well every time I go by to look for Torbie. They've added
a nice rocking share to the cat adoption room and I'm told several
adoptions have come to pass in that chair. When there aren't many
cats being held for adoption they shut the door to the adoption room
and let the cats run free of their cages. I petted the most adorable
gray kitty in the rocker last Sunday.

I don't have to tell you all how cute they are cuz all furry
    	babies are cute!

I really hope the possible home for the mom cat works out because

And the babies..... well..... The little black and white male
is *definitely* a trouble-maker. In the cutest of ways of course.
He's the most curious from what I saw. The little calico girl is

Dare I jinx myself by speaking of this?

Oh well, I can't keep it in. There is a small chance that I may have
found a home for Dolly Madison (4.995). We're doing a trial run this
weekend. The woman who wants her is allergic to cats but wants one
very badly and will be stocking up on antihistimines. This lady was
so excited over the possibility of taking Dolly home that she called
and left a voicemail at my office at 10pm last night to tell me she
couldn't stop thinking about her and wants to give this a try.

She's never met Dolly. She's only heard stories from me about her
looks, her personality and her need for a home with no other cats.
I think she'll be a good cat mom. She wants someone there to greet
her when she comes home and someone to love and who will love her
unconditionally. She lives close enough to me that I can work with
her and help her learn to bathe Dolly and clip her nails, etc.

We're both totally excited about this possibility. Please keep all
fingers and paws crossed that she'll fall totally in love with Dolly
and won't be allergic to her.

    Jan

P.S. Dolly comes with an unconditional guarantee that should this not
work out that I will take her back immediately.

    Jan,

Tell Dolly's future parent about allerpet. It really does help some
people avoid allergic reactions to cats. Other tricks some people have
had success with is washing hands immediately after cat play time, not
letting the cat sleep in the bedroom, and not letting her bump up
against your face. Science Weekly also had an article about 7-8 years
ago about spraying carpets and upholstery down with a weak solution of
green tea. Apparently the tannins or something neutralizes something
in cat dander that many people find to be an allergen. Bathing a cat
(often risky in my book) on a regular basis also helps many. A HEPA
air purifier in the bedroom or in the areas where the cat is also can
help. Two friends with allergies and a passion for powder birds
(Cockatiels are notorious) found this to be a great solution in their
    bird areas.

If all else fails, some sympathetic allergists are making up
desensitation mixture using a person's cats' dander which has also had
a marked success for those who can tolerate the treatments. Other
people will eventually build up an immunity to their own cat(s), and
another friend had success using a homeopathic remedy. some of us who
aren't too allergic just suffer through when we get a new cat and
eventually get over it. the fact that dolly is an indoor cat will help
as at least she won't bring in "stuff" from outdoors, like my cats do.
Fall around here gets pretty miserable anyway and the cats seem to love
the very plants that stir up my reactions.

Good luck, Dollys future mom, and best wishes.

Dolly's potential new mom is currently dealing with the weekend visit
by taking chloretrimeton. After a decision is made on whether or not
to keep Dolly I will be returning to her apartment to give her the
finer details on keeping Dolly groomed dealing with allergies long-
    term, etc.

I have an article that says studies show a 90% decrease in the amount
of airborn dander coming from the cat when it was washed weekly with
distilled water. I think weekly baths are a little much though.
Another study was conducted in St. Louis using monthly rinses with
distilled water that shows a reduction in dander too. It may take a
little longer to reduce the allergens with the monthly rinses instead
of the weekly rinses though. This article includes other methods of
dealing with allergies too. The article is called "Dander Away" and
comes from the August 1992 Cat Fancy magazine. It may be a little old
but it still contains some valid information.

Anyway, I'm going to give her a copy of the article and help her deal
with the allergies as well as I can. She really wants this to work.
I called her yesterday to see how they were doing and she has had some
small reaction to Dolly. Her eyes got a little puffy but the
chloretrimeton appears to be helping. It's just making her a little
    sleepy.

She says Dolly appears to be happy. She's checking out the apartment,
is using her box and slept on Bonnie's bed Friday night. She's a
little afraid of the patio area though. When she walks by the sliding
glass door and looks out it spooks her. Bonnie put some towels up to
block her vision until she gets a little more used to her surroundings.

    Keeping fingers crossed...

    Jan

P.S. This article also mentions that a study where researchers treated
carpets with a 3% tannic acid solution in water, which reduced
allergen content to 6 percent of previous levels. However,
allergens returned to former levels when a cat walked on the
          treated carpets. Oh well...

    Jan and mom-to-be:

Multihist is a fairly new antihistamine that doesn't seem to have the
drowsyness effect that clortrimeton does. Another is Hispanol, which
is supposed to be safer than Seldane, which is also less likely to
    cause drowsyness.

I've heard that wiping the cat down with a damp facecloth
helps. Also I know the high filtration vacuum cleaner bags
    help Sweetie's asthma.

5.279SMURF::MSCANLONa ferret on the barco-loungerMon Apr 07 1997 16:4911
Extended use of Hismanal can cause liver damage.
Seldane can have lethal side effects in some instances
    when taken with Erythromycin.
For me, vaccuuming often, daily "rub-downs" with
a damp washcloth, religious use of air cleaners,
and Sudafed when I need it helps my severe asthma
and I live comfortably with 12 animals (5 cats,
    7 ferrets).

MM, Allegra, the Seldane replacement, is supposedly free
of Seldane's side effects. That said, the environmental
controls I use have enabled Sweetie to avoid meds.

I talked to Bonnie today and was told in no uncertain terms that Dolly
will not be leaving her house. Yea!!!!!!!

Bonnie is suffering from the same allergies at work that she was had at
home so she doesn't think Dolly is really affecting her that much. It's
probably the wind blowing all the dust and pollen around that's really
getting to her. I've given her a referral to my allergist since she
seems to be having some other allergic troubles besides cat allergy.

Bonnie is planning to pick up a grooming comb soon and will be receiving
claw clipping and bathing instructions from me in the near future.
She'll be armed with the "Dander Away" article as well as some distilled
water and antihistimines. She'll probably have more information on
dealing with cat allergies than she'll know how to use.

She "loves" Dolly. Apparently, Dolly's personality is showing itself
like crazy now that she's free from worrying about being attacked.
She's even letting them pet her stomach. She never did that for me.
Bonnie says that Dolly sleeps under her bed at night and in the morning
hops up on the bed and gives her that "hello, where's breakfast" look.
Dolly loves sitting on the windowsill too. Bonnie has a couple of little
cherub fountains with constant running water and Dolly has figured out
she is allowed (and encouraged) to drink from them. She's still a
little skittish about the sliding glass door. Bonnie says Dolly is
fine until someone walks by outside then she'll growl and run out of the
    room.

This is looking like a really good match. I'm so excited.

That's really great news Jan! And who knows, she may luck
out like I did and eventually become immune to her cat allergy.
I was quite allergic since age 12 until I started dating my
now ex-husband. He had a cat and after being around her all
the time, I built up the immunity. As as we all know, I now
have four. VERY fortunately for me, my new husband-to-be doesn't
have problems with the cats and his asthma. He had very severe
asthma as a child (in and out of the hospital and oxygen tents).
I don't know what I would have done, had he been allergic.

Rocky and Tink have a new home.

My wife called the Hooksett Veterinary Clinic, where Rocky and Tinkerbell
have been going, and asked them if they knew anyone who was looking to
adopt two cats. About three days later we received a call from someone
who used to have (and love) cats, gave hers up for a bad reason, and now
wished to adopt two cats.

Have I got a deal for you, I said.

About two hours later, when Heather and Verne came to be interviewed by
Rocky and Tink, an unmentioned "wrinkle" was apparent: they have an
eight-month-old baby. I knew that Rocky and Tink tolerated the two-and
three-year olds who frequent my house, but wasn't sure about a little
baby. Well, we sat the baby on the floor, and Rocky sauntered over to say
"Hello." He sniffed and looked, thought about it, and flopped down on his
side so his backbone was touching the baby's legs, and smiled while the
baby explored the new textures and colors with great glee.

That was on Friday. On Saturday afternoon we called the new "parents" to
see how they made out with Rocky and Tink. They're in love with the cats,
and the cats, who were allowed to SLEEP IN BED WITH THEM are apparently
in seventh heaven. (We had never even allowed them into our bedroom,
because of Nancy's allergy.)

Happy ending.
