23.2DARK SHAWDOWS UPDATE PLEASE!!!!SNBURN::KINGMon Jan 28 1991 13:231
I missed Friday's Dark Shadows . . . update pleeeaasee!!!!
23.3Friday night's episodeWMOIS::CUDAKThelMon Jan 28 1991 13:3837
I don't have time for a full update, but here are the highlights.

Dr. Julia found out about Barnabas and Victoria because Barnabas gave
Vickie Josette's music box. The Doc was very jealous and decided to
discontinue the injections as a way of returning him to normal. Oh she
still gave him his shots but to maintain him as he currently is. She
goofed in some way and Barnabas started turning into a vampire again.
He realized this when Vickie had to stay overnight because of a storm
and he almost bit her neck. He made Willie chain him in the crypt and
then go get the "good doctor". When she arrived he demanded to know
what she had done to him. She told him and also told him why. He
demanded she fix it, she gave him another shot, but this one really
backfired (unless she did it on purpose), he started to aged and
    quickly.

The next morning, he hands started to wrinkle up first. He made Willie
bring Vickie home and told him to get Dr. Hoffman. Julia refused to go
with Willie saying she couldn't help Barnabas. Meantime, Caroline
arrived at Barnabas' to make sure he would attend the costume ball her
mother was having. He was sitting in the shadows and when she
approached him he was a wrinkled old man and a full vampire to boot.
He looked like the one in that Stephan King novel TV movie. HE jumped
up and grabbed Carolyn. Willie arrived home and yelled at him, he got
back in his chair and told Willie to close the drapes. When he did,
Barnabas became young again. He walked to the mirror and there wasn't
a reflection. He raised Caroline and told her she would be his
companion in eternity and to tell no one what had happened.

Earlier Caroline and Joe had gone sailing then to Maggie's Dad's place
for a hamburg. Maggie had a vision of Caroline and an old vampire.
Caroline is crazy about Joe and had come on heavy to him on the boat,
he is still mourning Dauphine so stopped her.

Barnabas loaned Vickie one of Josette's gowns for the costume ball.
The prviews showed the ball as taking place next week, although each
week they show the seance taking place in the previews but so far it
    hasn't occurred.

DARK SHADOWS ABOUNDS WITH GHOULISH AND GORGEOUS EFFECTS

After premiering as a four-hour miniseries earlier this month, the new
Dark Shadows has now settled into its regular groove as a weekly prime-
    time soap.

Much of the action takes place at Collinwood, the spooky mansion on the
Maine coast, where Barnabas the vampire and his family live. The house
that actually doubles as Collinwood is the famed Greystone Mansion in
Beverly Hills, a sixty-three-year-old estate that was constructed by
the late California oil baron, Edward Doheny.

    While Greystone has fifty-five opulent rooms--including a
motion-picture theater, bowling alley and billiar parlor--it lacks one
Collins-family must: a torture chamber! The chamber of horrors, which
is part of the show's eighteenth-century storyline, had to be specially
contructed by Production Designer Bryan Ryman.

Since the plot weaves back and forth between 1990 and 1790, most actors
are playing dua--and often contrasting--roles. (Barbara Steele, for
instance, plays straight-laced Dr. Julia Hoffman in the present-day
storyline, but turns into a flamboyant French countess when the clock
turns back two centuries.) Ben Cross (Barnabas) probably spends the
most time each day with the show's makeup artist, Jack Petty. His
vampire look--ghostly white face and fangs--only takes forty-five
minutes to create, but, for one sequence in which Barnabas aged several
hundred years, Cross spent nearly fiv hours in the makeup chair.

I stuck a piece in the wrong Dark Shadows. So I'll ask my question
    here.

Is it too late for me to start taping the show. Have I missed to
much? I've been reading the up dates here in the file and I'm starting
to get hooked once again. I'm the only one in the house that likes
the show and so I'm don't watch it. Thats why I'd like to know if
its too late for me to start taping the show.

23.9Never too lateWMOIS::CUDAKThelFri Feb 01 1991 10:108
No, it isn't too late to start watching or taping. If you watched the
original show, you'll pick up on the storyline immediately. If you
didn't watch the original show, it might be worth the price of the next
issue of Soap Opera Digest to review the past happenings. There is a
section of SOD that give a synopsis of the previous 2 weeks of all the
Soaps and since the next issue will be the first to do this for DS, it
will tell you what has happened from the beginning (the 4 hour movie,
    plus the weekly shows).

This new series is really getting good...I almost panicked though when
they broke in with a new bulletin at 9:45 because I'm taping this.
Luckily we didn't miss much though. Did any of you recognize the
person playing Phyllis Wick (the girl who switched places with Vicky?
She use to play Cindy/Karen on AMC and Marley/Victoria on Another
World. I like her, but this character is only is the original series
    for a short time.
23.11Parallel TimeRAVEN1::BUCKHIESTERBuckiMon Feb 04 1991 09:3114

    Elaine,

I agree with you ... the new series is really getting good. I wonder
what is going to happen with Vicky back in 1790 and meeting Josette
and Angelique and Barnabus. I wonder if she is going to find out the
truth about Barnabus. Is someone else going to have to go back in time
to get Vicky? I love the parallel time idea. Wasn't Joshua Collins
Barnabus's father ... if so then Vicky will probably be governess to
    Sara (Barnabus's sister)?

23.12re -1DNEAST::BURGE_ELAINEMon Feb 04 1991 10:5113
In the old series, Vicky was governess to Barnabas sister, Sarah...
Joshua was Barnabas father and Naomi was his mother. Also, although
she was back in time, she never found out what happened to Barnabas
because she was arrested for witchcraft and was in jail awaiting trial.
In the original, she was found guilty and hanged, and when they took
the hood off her, it wasn't her hanging there it was Phyllis Wick and
she ended up back in the present. Although she spent about three
months in the past, time in the present was only the matter of a few
minutes. It will be interesting to see what they do this time. In
future storyline's more of the cast members return to the past, in fact
I think some of them go back to rescue someone else. I like the way
this show is moving faster than the old one did, also I like the way
they keep making the apparation of Angelique appear.

dc...

The Doctor (Julia Hoffman) is in love with Barnabas, that's why she cares
so much. She fell for him and tried to cure him, only to find out that
he is in love with Vicky, who looks like his long-dead love, Josette.

As to Angelique. When Josette came from Martinque to marry Barnabas,
Angelique was her personal maid. Barnabas had had an affair with her
before he met and fell in love with Josette. When she comes with Josette
to Collinwood, she tries again to get Barnabas to fall in love with her,
to know avail...so she resorts to witchcraft. When Barnabas finds out
she is behind all the things (bad) that are happening at Collinwood (for
which Vicky is blamed for, charged with witchcraft and hung when she
goes back in time) he shoots her. Thinking she's dying she places a
curse on Barnabas that turns him into a vampyre. By the way, some of
the things she does is makes Josette fall in love with Jerimiah (Barnabas
uncle) by placing a spell on them both. They run off and marry, Barnabas
challenges Jerimiah to a duel and he's killed. Barnabas tries to turn
Josette into a vampire so she can be with him forever, only to have
Angelique thwart him by making Josette jump from Widow's Hill. His
mother finds out he's a vampire and kills herself, then his father, unable
to kill him chains him in his coffin. Willie found the secret room in
the mauseleum during the first show and let him out. (Hope this answers
your questions...and makes sense)

Thanks Elaine -> your explanation will make watching and understanding
this show even better! One more thing --> who was the woman who set
up the seance? How does she fit into the show?

    --dc
23.19DNEAST::BURGE_ELAINETue Feb 05 1991 11:555
The woman who set up the seance was Maggie Evans. In the old series
she was the one who looked like Josette and her boyfriend was Joe
Haskell, he's seeing Carolyn in this show. Anyway, Maggie is having an
affair with Roger Collins. The Maggie/Roger storyline on this show is
    altogether different from the original.
23.20Friday partial updateDNEAST::BURGE_ELAINEWed Feb 06 1991 06:5925
Let me see if I can remember some of Friday's show...I had to work last
night so I didn't have time to review it. There was costume ball at
Collinwood and then Roger and Maggie were playing with a ouigi (sp)
board and asking it questions. One of the questions was is the
murderer still in Collinsport. The answer, of course, was yes. Then
they asked what letter his name started with, the board said "C",
someone said is that the first or last name? So they ask the board to
spell the persons first name, at that point Carolyn knocked the board
off the table and said it was a stupid game.

Later on at the Old House, Barnabas tells Julia that he has reverted to
his old self, except now its worse and she's too blame. He also says
Carolyn is now under his spell.

The only other thing I remember is that later on at Collinwood they
decide to hold a seance to see what Sarah is trying to tell them.
BTW, earlier, Sarah stopped Barnabas from trying to kill Julia
During the seance, Vicky disappears and Phyllis Wick appears in her
place. When the show ended they had Phyllis lying on a bed unconscious
and they were assuming with her here, that Vicky had gone to wherever
she came from. She did have a letter on her addressed to Joshua
Collins recommending her as a governess.

(this is awful, but its all I can remember from Fridays show)

23.21A little bit more for Fridays show...DELNI::YORSTONWed Feb 06 1991 08:2725
(Now that Carolyn is under Barnabas's spell)...

Carolyn and Joe went to an antique shop on the Pier and Carolyn bought
a 200 year old medicine box that still has the original "drugs" in
it... Later on they show Carolyn at the house and she offers to bring
the tea in to Julia and Elizabeth. She asks Julia how she takes her
tea and while Julia tell her, Carolyn pours some drugs into her tea
(attempting to kill her with it)... When she gives Julia her
tea, David come running into the room and tells her not to drink it
because it's been poisoned! Elizabeth tells him he's foolish and just
when Julia goes to take a sip of her tea, David knocks the cup out
of her hand spilling the tea all over the place. At that point David
is sent to his room. When he goes into his room, Sara is there and
he tells her he hopes she's right (about the poison).
Then,,, later on that night when everyone is sleeping, they show
Barnabas calling to Carolyn. Carolyn wakes up from her sleep goes to
the kitchen, get a knife and proceeds to Julias room. When she goes
in the room she walks over to the bed and begins stabbing the mattress
(thinking Julia is there sleeping). When Carolyn leaves the room they
show Julia standing behind a door watching her. After seeing that,
    Julia went to see Barnabas-

(then Elaines earlier note finishes the rest)...

What happened near the end of the show when Victoria was writing in her

23.28Partial updatePOBOX::RILEY_RMon Feb 11 1991 15:3163
Hi everyone! I can give an update for Friday Feb. 8. For time sake
and because this show is so involved I will break in into parts.
The first part is about Victoria. Please bear with me as I don't know
    all the characters names.

The show was primarily about Victoria in the 1700's. It opens with
Victoria trying on Angelique's dress and the woman who is Barnabus's
father sister (sorry, hope it's not too confusing) is exaiming
Victoria's present day dress. She notices the zipper and washing label
The label is the type which has symbols. She questions Victoria about
all this and Victoria expains what it is. Victoria is still very dazed
and confused and all these questions about a zipper are even more
confusing to her. She begins asking questions like, "What year is it"
and so on. Of course, Barnabus's dad's sister and the lady who plays
the Dr. in the present day think she is crazy. They leave Victoria in
the bedroom and tell her to get some rest. Victoria over hears them
says she is crazy and they are calling the bailaff to come and take her
    away.

Victoria decides she must get out of there. She goes to the main
collinwood mansion. She is shocked to see it is just being build. As
she walks in there are men working and a lot of construction materials
laying around. She goes into the room where the seance was being held
and sits about where she was before this happened to her. She closes
her eyes and talks out loud, "Please Sarah I need your help. Please
help me...." The man who plays Caroline's boyfriend (originally
Daphne's boyfriend) happens to be in charge of the construction. You
can tell by the way he looks at her that he is attracted to her. He
walks over and says," If you want Sarah, why don't you check the
nursery?" In the spirit of friendliness he then asks Victoria a bunch
of questions that she can't answer, "Where are you from...What are you
doing here.... How did you get here..." Victoria then cracks, she
beings to cry and panic and babble on that the people in the main house
think she's crazy... Caroline's boyfriend is genuinely concerned for
her and says that they have to get her story straight right away. He
says the crazy house is the worst fate she could ever have. He then
forges a letter of recommendation regarding her being the governess.

Victoria presents the letter and her story to Barnabus's father. (The
story was just how she took Phyllis place and so on.. nothing really
worth mentioning..) He looks her up and down, including checking her
teeth and then he decides she can stay. (all the men look pleased by
    this!)

Barnabus's dad's sister is still skepical of Victoria and steals her
present day dress. She takes it to a priest-if you want to call this
guy a priest. He's looks at the "stitchery made of iron and the magic
symbols" and says yes, that Victoria is evil.

Victoria is then called upon by the father to explain herself again.
She's caught of guard and is stumbling to explain. The father does
this in front of his whole family and the men (Barnabus, and his
brothers: Caroline's boyfriend and a new character, Jerome) all put
words in her mouth which help her cover up her story. The father
    excuses her this time.

If no one gets to it before me, I will add in what went on with
Barnabus and in the present day. I hope this is not too confusing.
This is a very hard show to summarize in one sitting!!

23.29rest of updatePOBOX::RILEY_RMon Feb 11 1991 15:5543
Hi! I'm back, the copier has a line so I'll finish up. The rest of the
show was much shorter than the part with Victoria.

    Barnabus and Angelique:

Angelique is definetly hot for Barnabus. She walks right into his room
and takes her clothes off and starts kissing him. He tries to shake
her off but they wind up making love. The next night she tries to do
the same thing. Barnabus is really upset and he tells her he loves
Josette and the whole thing was a mistake. He kicks her out and as she
is leaving she is screaming," You've made a big mistake Barnabus...
    this will NEVER be over!"

The next day, Angelique goes over to Willy who is working in the yard.
She has her hands behind her back. She says to Willy, " I want you"
and he says, "Well, here I am." She takes her hands out from behind
her and she is holding a voodoo doll of Willy. She then basically
beats him up using the doll (poor Willy, what a goofy guy) and he
is very scared of her and calls her a witch. She tells him something
like, "You'll be my eyes when I can't see and my arm when mines too
weak....You will do my bidding." After all this she tells Willy he
    won't remember a thing-which he doesn't.

    The Present:

Phyllis Wick is in bed unconscious at Collinwood. The Dr. goes over to
Barnabus and says, "You know her don't you?" Barnabus says, "Yes, she
was thrown from her horse and she came to our house looking like she
did when she came here." He says she does recover from her fall but
several days later got a fever and died. Willy is worried that it will
happen again and then they would have no way to get Victoria back.
    Barnabus is very concerned too.

Phyllis wakes up to find herself hooked up to machines. She rips
everything off of herself and runs out the door.

There were some funny little things that happened also, maybe someone
else will elaborate! I'm sorry I can't remember everyone's names.
Also, even though I used the present day names when I could remember-
in the 1700's their names are different (ie. Willy is not Willy in
1790). I'll be out this Friday so I hope someone else can update!!!

                        Roger       = Reverend Trask
Ghost Sarah = Sarah (as a live child)
                        Victoria    = herself and Josette
                        Daphane (carolyn ?) = Jerome's fiancee, a spoiled
                                              brat
    New Characters:

                        Joshua Collins, Barnabas' Father
                        Jerome Collins, Barnabas' Brother
Angelique, Josette's maid, came to Collinwood
                                   with the Countess

    Additional info regarding Friday.....

Barnabas, Jerome and Peter are all attracted to Vickie, Barnabas says
it is because of her resemblence to Josette.

It seems Barnabas was visited Josette at her home and she took off for
France on him....it was a family emergency but he didn't know this. He
was lost and upset and Angelique was attracted to him. They had an
    affair which Barnabas regerted immediately.

Vickie is confused and mixed up when she is thrusted back in time. She
doesn't have any answers to the questions asked of her, Barnabas gives
her the excuse of being thrown from the mail cart and hitting her head.
His Father buys that, at least for the time being.

Reverend Trask is a witch hunter more than a preacher, his sermons are
all fire and brimstone. The Aunt is an old maid and swears by him.
Joshua forbids her from seeing him again after he decides that Victoria
is just suffering from the fall from the mail cart.

    Comments......

This version of our beloved Soap, is very good.

The actress playing Angelique can't "hold a candle" to Lara Parker.
She is attractive, but doesn't have that something that made Angelique
such a great character on the original show.

In the past Collinwood is the house that Barnabas lives in in the
present and the current Collinwood is under construction, it is almost
    done.

    Previews........

Next week's previews said Angelique would cause Josette to marry
    Jerome.

Barnabas and Jerome were shown getting ready to fight a duel.

Just a few changes to the character names in .30

Joe Haskell = Is Peter Bradford (not Benedict, Victoria fell in love
with him in the old series and he was a lawyer, not a builder as he is
    in this one.)

Julia Hoffman = is Natalie DuPres', Josette's aunt

Willie Loomis = is Ben Loomis (in the old series he was Barnabas
servant, but the character was Ben Stokes and it was not the present
day Willie who played the part, confused yet?)

Mrs. Johnson (the housekeeper) = is Abigail Collins, Barnabas aunt

Carolyn Stoddard = Millicent Collins (Jerimiah's fiance, in the
original she was a simpering twit)

Barnabas's brother is Jerimiah, not Jerome (he was his uncle in the
    original show)

They have changed the characters quite a bit from the original show,
some of the changes are for the better too.

Last Friday Barnabus killed his brother in a duel over gaining
satisfaction about the fact that his brother ran-off and married
his bethrothed --> Josette! Barney didn't even plan this death,
the ball of lead was placed there by magic and the insistant
chidings of the little blond witch, who wants Barnabus all to
    herself! (^%

I thought the fog blowing all over the death scene was totally
effective. I did however notice sunlight glinting in their hair
in between clouds of fog that blowed by. Nevertheless, I bought
the scene --> hook, line and sinker!

I've been discussing the new show with a couple of other DS freaks,
like me. So far we love the new show and the cast they selected. The
only one we are very disappointed in is the actress playing Angelique,
she is terrible (pretty but totally over-acts). Quite a switch from
the original show Lara Parker was the only one whose acting was totally
believable, while the rest of the cast appeared to "camp it up". She
is the only cast member I really miss, now that the new Angelique has
    appeared.

How do the rest of you feel about this actress?

Angelique. I don't think I would appreciate it if this one left
chocolate-covered maraschino cherries on my pillow! She does
however, seem a little over-powered by her role not vice-versa.

I know this is a key question --> but, does Angelique ever wind up
with Barnabus, even for a moment? Or is she doomed to only be with
him that one time, in his pre-Josette days? Or don't we know yet?

23.58Angelique (hope I didn't go overboard)DNEAST::BURGE_ELAINEThu Feb 21 1991 06:2011
dc--in the old show, Angelique and Barnabas do marry, and afterwards he
finds out she is the witch and tries to kill her...he shoots her...she
then places the curse on him that turns him into a vampire. After that
all mention of them ever marrying is struck from the family history and
she haunts him through the rest of the years (he does eventually
strangle her to death after he becomes a vampire, but you can't keep a
good witch down, she comes back). Every time it seems like he is going
to be happy she does something to try and stop it, as I'm sure this
show will show...now that Vicky has gone into the past, she will know
that Barnabas is up and roaming again and she'll show up to make him
    miserable.

At the end of last weeks show, when they showed previews of the next
show (which is next week), the announcer said something about the next
show being the one where Angelique turns Barnabus into a vampire. Then
they showed a scene where Barnabus was laying on the ground with blood
dripping from his throat and a bat was flying off. They followed with
a scene showing Josette ( I think ) holding Barnabus and saying "Please
don't die...". (At least I thought it was Josette and Barnabus, maybe
    it was Vicky.....)

Sounds like the next show is not a show you want to miss. But then
again, I don't want to miss any of the shows..... My husband and
I are really enjoying Dark Shadows we make a big deal out of making
sure we are in our places for the opening of the show.

Also, my husband has been following the ratings in USA Today, and he
says that Dark Shadows has been falling about 68th. That doesn't

from Wednesday to Friday at 9:00 in hopes it will provide a strong

The Dark Shadows slot in EOT::TV is not for updates. Someone had asked
for an update and was instructed to access this file.

Regarding the ratings, have you all noticed that all the series that
have been on the weekend 9:00 timeframe are always 'almost' cancelled?
Then they change the slots and they're on for a while then crap out.
Maybe FOX will pick it up and be a major contender for the Big 3.

The only other reason I can think of for cancelling Dark Shadows, is
that there are some pretty big names in the series who are not too
familiar with 'series' type schedules/acting etc. Maybe they're tired
of it already or they want more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Guess we'll just have to wait & see. Hopefully, it doesn't get
cancelled...my boyfriend, some friends and I make it a point to watch
or at the very least tape it.

Lara Parker (original DS) was Angelique, thru & thru...the best in the
series...this new Angelique is a major bimbo and a whiny bitch too!
Although I might whine if I didn't get 'my way' with BatBoy! ;-)

Friday's show was totally rad and narly! Angelique is totally
stoked because Barnabus discovered the voo-doo doll in her room!
They fought, he rolled on top of her and a long knife pierced her
heaving chest! She died, (for a little while) and as a result,
Josette popped awake, from her totally outrageous stupor! (^%

Meanwhile, right before this, Angelique arranged for Jeremiah's
totally honked-off zombie double, to threaten Josette at the sea
cliff! It was a pretty hairy scene --> lots of screaming and
crashing waves! Finally, Jeremiah/zombie was convinced to put
Josette down! He does, but dives into the pounding waves, on his
    way to zombie heaven! (^%

Now grab this, Josette is back in love with Barnabus! The spell
is broken! Aha, thought it was over, didn't ya? Nope, it is just
    beginning!

There is another seance to return Phyliss Wick back to 1790. Angelique
inhabits the Doctor's body! She is one totally honked-off mad, witch!

She goes right for the throat back in 1790 and Josette discovers a
protrate and bloody Barnabus laying on the floor! Angelique cursed
Barnabus for all eternity! He was biten on the neck by Angelique
who was impersonating Josette, who just happens to be an exact look-alike
    for Victoria! (^%

Now, as more and more entries appear in the diary in 1991, even though
they are written in 1790 --> Barnabus wants somehow to rescue Victoria!
I am still not sure about these diary entries? Is it Victoria who is
doing the writing? How do they show up in 1991? Is it because there
is an open channel between 1771 and 1991?

Victoria is now in prison for witchcraft! She admits the truth to her
solicitor! Needless to say he is astonished! Victoria is in big-time
trouble! This rad and narly preacher dude, like wants to burn her at the
stake! This show is the best! (^%

Elaine's the expert when it comes to Dark Shadows, but I believe
the diary is Sarah's. I guess that if events change in 1791 because
of Victoria's presence then any entries that Sarah writes appear
in the 1991 version of the diary. Its like a ripple affect if the
past changed then the present ( and the future are affected.) Actually
the change to the future is rather minimal - just new entries in the
diary. It would be really interesting if the present were totally
different for Victoria when and if she comes back. ( She did in the

One more thing, how is it that Angelique was able to turn Barnabus
into a vampire. I saw the big "kiss" she laid on him ( while in her
Josette disguise ), but I was confused. Is she able to assume any
nasty shape she wants because she's a ( dead ) witch? Is this part of
the fantasy that we just accept - dead witches can bite you on the neck
and if you die you're a vampire?!?!

Also USA Today had an article about Ben Cross in Friday's paper.
According to Ben he considers Dark Shadows to be a "supernatural

That was the jist of Angelique's "eternal curse."

Angelique must have looked dead to Barnabus and Ben, because they
buried her. Later her burial spot was hit by lots of lightening...
maybe the lightening signified the forces of evil giving Angelique
more power now that she was no longer part of this world...
( that might also explain why she could be killed, she was evil
but still human, now that she's dead she just evil - evil - evil,
and not constrained by a human body....)

This theory helps me understand my own question regarding why could
Angelique turn Barnabus into a vampire. In other words, like Lou said
in one of the previous replies...

... Angelique is now supernatural and one mean lady

I think Barnabus really did kill Angelique with the knife. After
she was buried, when all the lightening struck the grave site, it
appeared to restore her to the living. Nothing like a little burial
insurance policy --> she must have had a major-league pact with the
forces of evil in order to return, so she could kill Barnabus! (^%

If he didn't really kill her, than she feigned being dead long enough
to fool everyone! This stuff still happens in parts of Haiti and the

Barnabus told Victoria that Josette was frightened by

was Jeremiah who was going to toss her over...fine...then
she offers him her neck in the end..(even better) but
where would that leave everyone off in the present and

    re .103

Angelique hates Barnabas so much for not loving her that, yes, she does
make his life miserable for the next two hundred years. Yes she did
marry Roger later, but that was only so she could be near Barnabas and
make his life miserable. The reason she has returned to the present
and inhabited Dr Hoffman's body, is to be sure Barnabas doesn't escape
her curse. Also this storyline is new to this series, in the old
series whenever she returned she was able to appear human, in this
series so far she's only an apparation.

    Re. 104

As Thel said be patient, I think this week you will see Josette jump to
her death from Widow's Hill. Angelique miscalculated...she thought
when Josette found out Barnabas was a vampire she would turn from him,
when he didn't there was no way she was going to let them be together
and she is the one who makes Josette jump. To answer your other

They are certainly carving out alot of some pretty extensive

For those who remember the original, when Victoria was in the

True, that's what I'm wondering...time was frozen while Vicky was in
the past in the old episodes and as they hung her for witchcraft the
present came to life and Vicky was in Phyllis' place and in the past
Phyllis was the one that hung. Should be interesting and I also hope
its not cancelled before its resolved...although 13 episodes are
suppose to be in the "can". I thought maybe once Vicky returned from
the past and they had explained how Barnabas became a vampire that they
might move on to new storylines that are different from the old series.
I hope so, that should make the show more interesting.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I'm 25 years old and the only
memory I have of Dark Shadows is that there was a music box and
Barnabus was holding a girl against her will (Victoria?) and telling
her to listen to the music.....The girl did not seem to like Barnabus
like Victoria does in this show. Boy, thats really hard for me to

Josette let Barnabus bite her!! The facial expressions on Joanna Going
were excellent..you could really sense how much they love each other
and what a terrible tragedy the whole thing is) It is such a unique
twist to feel sorry for a vampire.

In the event the show does get cancelled (I really hope not) I hope
they have the decency to actually end the story. I am only interested

    show.

I have to tell you .. I'm losing interest. I'm sick of seeing all that
blood dripping from Barnabas' mouth. I think they could get the point
across some other way. When Jonathan Frid did that, I liked it better.

The old show was better, I think. What do the rest of you feel? My age
doesn't have anything to do with it.

    Mary Lou

I just got my next installment of eight tapes of the old series, Feb
and March releases and my son and I were talking about this yesterday
while I watched four of the tapes (yes I vegged out). I also think the
old show was far superior to this one...after watching those four tapes
it only reaffirmed my opinion that Lara Parker was great as Angelique
(those eyes of hers made her really believable) and Grayson Hall was a
better Julia...but I guess as someone here said, we should try and look
at the new show, as just that a new show and not compare it to the
original....but its hard. The acting wasn't as good, but that was the
fun part of it...and I still liked Jonathan Frid better as Barnabas.
23.119gore!!POBOX::RILEY_RMon Mar 18 1991 13:4031
    Hi everyone!!

Well, I'm the one who doesn't remember the original show but I would
like to reply to Mary Lou. I don't think the blood scenes are too
bad. After all, it is a vampire series. I also think they try to
use those scenes to make a point. Like last week, when Josette was
about to be bitten and Anglicque flashed all the gore that's happened
since the begining of the show. They also seem to use those scenes
to emphasize the monster that Barnabus has become. Compared to other
shows out there (I guess I'm thinking along the lines of movies more
than TV) I think they've be pretty tame about it.

From some of the comments, it sounds like the original was great.
It's always hard to sit threw a remake. But (since I don't have
anything to really compare it to) I think theyv'e done a fantastic job.
I agree with all of you on the woman who plays Angelicque though. I
don't think her acting compares to the rest of the cast. The people
I think are really outstanding are Victoria and Willy. They really
seem to be flexible and can show a broad range of emotion. Barnabus
is good also, but his character in general does not need the range
    of the others.

Back to the topic, I think the blood and gore scenes have been OK.
Given TV's way of abusing violence, I think they've only put in enough
    to get the point across.

Has anyone heard if it will be canceled? When they said "season
finali" I wasn't sure how to take it. Usually it means its coming back
    next season.

23.121UpdatePOBOX::RILEY_RTue Mar 19 1991 16:2071
    Anna-

I will attempt an update for you. Two main things happened on Friday
March 15th. Victoria had her trial and Josette jumped from Widows
    Peak.

    Victoria's Trial:

Well, it went pretty bad as you can expect. Trask had in his
possession the book with the Collins history. He twisted it around by
saying Victoria's purpose here was to see that everything in the book
came true. He then recited some things yet to happen: Josette
"falling" from Widow's Peak and Sara dying of the fever. This caused
quite a stir in the court room. Her lawyers only real defense was to
say how silly that notion was. Victoria insisted on telling the truth
on where she was from and the time period. Trask ate it up. It just
proved his point. The Collins family was fairly sypathetic during the
trial. At one point, after Trask said Sara would die of the fever,
Sara's mother screamed at Victoria and said something to the effect of,
"Why are you doing this to my family?!!" Later, when they showed her
again she was appalled that she let her feelings get the best of her
and she really does not believe Victoria is guilty- but the damage was
    already done in court.

The next day in court was for Victoria's defense. Her lawyer had each
of the Collins family speak in her behalf. Her lawyer was also able to
poke fun at Trask a couple of times thus winning the jury back to
Victoria's side. Her lawyer laid a pretty decent case against
Angelicque. Just when you thought it was going really good for
Victoria....in walks Angelicque!!!! It surprised everyone in court.
Poor Willy was the one on the stand at the time and he really freaked
out screaming, "Witch!!! Witch!!! I buried you myself!!!" Angelicque
looked sweet and innocent. She said she went out of town for a couple
of days and when she returns she hears she is suppose to be dead and a
witch...... Well, Victoria's entire defense went right out the window.
She was found guilty and will be hung in the next episode. Three Dark
    Shadow days.

Josette was found in her room in the old house. She was laying in bed
and looking very sick and barely alive. They took her to the main
house. She is too sick to take her out of town by the fifth day (the
fifth day is the day she is suppose to fall from widow's peak according
to Victoria's book.) The French Dr. knows its a vampire. She hangs
several crosses in Josettes room. The rest of the family thinks she is
silly, but at this point they don't argue with her. When Barnabus
discovers Josette is not there he calls to her. She lays in bed saying
his name over and over. The rest of the people in the room think she is
delerious. The Dr. keeps looking out the window but doesn't see
    anything.

The Dr. is left watching Josette. It is almost mid-night. Barnabus's
dad and another man are on thier way up to relieve the Dr. Barnabus is
able to make the Dr. fall asleep and Josette wakes up and goes to him.

When she enters the old Collin's house, Barnabus is standing at the top
of the stairs with his arm out to her. There are candles and fog
everywhere. Josette is in that trance that the people seem to go into
after they are bitten. She starts walking to him. The spirit of
Angelicque appears infront of her (Barnabus is unaware) and tells
Josette, " You are so young and beautiful...but look at your future.."
At that point, visions of Josette as a vampire flash by. She's got the
wierd eyes and fangs and blood running down her mouth. The whole time
Josette is still walking toward Barnabus. She starts to blink hard,
you can tell the trance is breaking. Then Angelique says," see
Barnabus for what he really is" Barnabus in every gory scene since the
begining flashes. That's all Josette can take. She is just out of
Barnabus's reach when the trance is broken. She looks at him and says
NO! and turns and runs. She runs all the way to Widow's Peak and
    jumps. Barnabus is crushed.

There is something else which happened that I think was pretty
important. Victoria is starting to put together that it is a vampire.
She mentions that the same type of crimes are happening in 1991. She
tells this to her lawyer who says she has to becareful who she says
that to as she may look like the one causing it.

Renee --> your update was great, it made me feel like I was watching
the tape all over again! You mentioned something about two houses?
I am still confused about this --> are there two houses called
    Collinwood? How come? Thanks!

    -dc
23.124two housesPOBOX::RILEY_RTue Mar 19 1991 17:2740
    DC-

Yes there are two houses and I think "Collinwood" is a term for the
whole estate. When I was typing the update I was trying to think if
they mentioned a name specifcally for each house and I can't recall them doing so.
    doing so.

I believe I can differentiate them for you though. In the present, the
Collins live in the "new" mansion. The old one is now where Barnabus
and Willy live. When Barnabus first arrived at Collinwood he asked if
he could rehab the place like his ancestor had it.

In the past, the Collins started out living in the "old" house
(Barnabus's and Willy's). The man who plays her lawyer was also the
one who built the new mansion. There was a scene when Victoria first
got transported to the past where she went to the "new" house and it
was still being built. She went to the same room and tried to sit in
approximately the same place where she was when she went backward in
    time.

Apparently the "new" mansion is now finished and after all the problems
Barnabus's father decided to move the family. ( I don't really see
how it's going to help as they only moved right next door!!!) Josette
orginally went back to her old house because they were going to take
her away but she didn't have her music box. When she went back to the
old mansion, the entire place was empty and dusty. As she got to her
old room the music box was playing and all her furniture was still set
up. Barnabus showed up behind her and told her to leave. She said
no-way now that she new he was "alive" she would never leave him again.
Barnabus flashed her the red eyes and the fangs and said, "can you
still say that?" Even though Josette was scared to death the looked at
him with a lot of love and compassion and tilted her head to the side
so he could bite her. They found her this week laying on her bed in
    that room.

Can you tell I'm not busy today?

Do you watch every week? I just read my note and I realized if you do
not watch often I may have confused you again. The reason Victoria
went to the "new" house right when she got zapped to the 17th century
was because she believed if she went to the exact same place where she
was-she could travel back-well forward to the 19th century. She was very panicked
panicked to see the house barely built.

If you already know this, please excuse this note!!!

23.126Did Victoria select her time travel?WHZKDS::CHERETONEither beg me, or slap my face!Tue Mar 19 1991 17:437

Thanks Renee --> I was wondering why there were these two seemingly
adjoining houses! Now I know why! (^% Did you say Victoria actually
selected where she would go on her time travels? I thought she got
snatched back to the past because of that seance? Is that right?

    --dc
23.127DNEAST::BURGE_ELAINEWed Mar 20 1991 06:4828
dc...no Vicky didn't select where she'd go, the seance' did zap her
back. I think what Renee' meant was that when she got there she went
to Collinwood because that's where they live in the future. BTW... The
new house is referred to as Collinwood and the place where Barnabas
lives is referred to as the Old House.

    Now this:
    WHAT THE RATINGS MEAN
Nielsen nightmare: Despite lavish sets, nightmarish special effects,
and the big-name presence of Ben Cross (Barnabas) and Jean Simmons
(Elizabeth), DS isn't making a dent in the ratings. The show has lost
ten share points since its January 13 premiere on NBC, and even DALLAS
(no ratings blockbuster at this point) is drawing more viewers every
    week.

A hard day's night: In a strange way, DS's plight points out a major
difference between daytime and nighttime--the size of the potential
audience. DS's February 15 episode garnered an 8.0 rating, and the
show finished in a dismal seventieth place in the prime-time lineup
that week. However, if DS were a daytime soap, that same 9.0 rating
would put it way ahead of every serial on the air except Young and the
    Restless (which is no 1).

Even Twin Peak's audience would seem much more respectable in daytime
terms. The show's last rating (5.1) would give it a viewership just
slightly smaller than Days and Guiding Light (which are 7 & 8).

[Wishful thinking...maybe they'd put it on days]

So...What did everyone think about the Season Finale????

I must admit that Angelique's last laugh sounded like Lara Parker's.
That's about the only decent thing she's done with the character
    thusfar! ;-)

I especially liked the scene with our dear Reverand Trask and the look
on Barnabus' face when he placed the last brick in the tomb. How
morbid!...but this guy was just begging to be put out of his misery!!!!

Well, Victoria now knows all about Barnabus and now he knows that she
knows....wonder what he'll do with her or she with him???

The Angelique/Maggie scenario ought to be interesting....

Well, we'll just have to wait for next season (I hope!!!!!)

23.130It was a good show!WMOIS::CUDAKThelMon Mar 25 1991 13:0115
Funny you should mention Angelique's last laugh. A friend and I were
discussing the season's finale this morning and we both agreed that
someone must have told the actress to tone down her performance as in
Friday night's show, she didn't overact at all, in fact she underplayed
her scenes quite well. Thank heaven!

I hope the show returns next year, I would love to see it continue. I
had forgotten all about the "good reverand" being walled up until I saw
Friday's show, what a fitting end. The thing that bothers me is that
the same actor played him as plays Roger in the present time.....how
can they bring Trask back into the show as they did in the old series?
I remember Jerry Lacy played Trask originally, he was a Humphrey Bogart
look-alike and did a lot of commercials pretending to be Bogie, he also
played him in Woody Allen's "Play It Again Sam"....wonder where he is
    now?
23.131season finalePOBOX::RILEY_RMon Mar 25 1991 13:4021
I thought the season finale was great!! I had two friends over
who haven't seen it yet and here I was trying to explain everything
during commercials!! They were so disappointed they didn't watch
from the begining! I could not believe when they shot Peter,
Victoria's lawyer! That whole scene had us sitting on edge.
I'm glad Trask got it!! So there is a Trask type character in the
present? I have a question-You know when Barnabus bites someone
and they die, arn't they suppose to come back as vampires? That girl
Daphne did but so many haven't. Does anyone know why? Or is it just
one of those things we aren't suppose to notice?!!!!

I went to Blockbuster Video to see about renting some of the Dark
Shadow tapes, but I changed my mind because there are so many subtle
differences I don't want to see the original!!!

I guess this file will be pretty quiet for a while, huh?

    Later everyone,

From the pages of Soap Opera Digest......

A small article talked about how poorly DS is doing in the night-time
ratings. It also said that it had an 8 share of the audience (whatever
that means) and that if it were being shown in the daytime with that
share, it would be the #1 soap, way higher than TYATR share of 5.
23.133DNEAST::BURGE_ELAINEMon Mar 25 1991 14:3813
The question about everyone coming back as a vampire, if they've been
killed by one. From what I've read and depending on how a given medium
decides to portray it, not everyone killed by a vampire comes back as
one...case in point Abigail, I doubt that she'll come back. I think if
they are killed quickly like Abigail, they don't but if the vampire
keeps coming back to the victim over and over again until they die then
they will also return as a vampire. Pretty morbid, huh?

As to the final show...I watched 8 more tapes in the old series last
week and really enjoyed them. Then I saw Friday's show and it was
really good and taking each show as a separate entity I have to say I
enjoy them both and after Friday's show, I certainly hope it returns
    next season.

Here's a bit of info from the Detroit Free Press:

"Dark Shadows" fans have hit NBC with a wave of calls and letters in
support of the glossy vampire soap opera, which completed it mid-season
run last Friday. The fan mail and phone calls have been suggesting
in rather strong terms that NBC should renew the show for fall. Those
interested in echoing the sentiments of the Barnabus Brigade should
write Warren Littlefield, President, NBC Entertainment, 3000 W. Alameda
    Blvd., Burbank, Calif. 91523.

I wrote awhile ago applauding the show but suggesting it be moved to
another night, perhaps Tuesday or Wednesday. I think half the trouble
with rating of this show and Twin Peaks is the weekend slot. Most
people have other things they do during the weekend and tend to record
the show which doesn't register in the Neilson's if you have a box. As
a result ratings tend to be lower than they should.

Well, I'm going to try again! It's been a whole week and I'm a little
fuzzy on the exact order of events -but I remember enough to give you
    all an idea what happened.

Some of the major things which happened were: Victoria gets hung, Sara
dies, Barnabus wants his dad to kill him.

I believe the opening scene was Barnabus's mother walking down the
staircase. As she passes Barnabus's portrait, she hears his voice
saying, "Mother, help me, I'm in the Old House" (its really
Angelicque). Mom goes to the old house and finds Barnabus. She is
    very happy to see him.

Sara and David are sitting on Mom's bed in her room. Sara is worried
about her mother-she knows she is in danger. Abagail opens the bedroom
door and the kids tell her their fears. Abagail tells them its OK and
    to go back to bed.

Abagail really is concerned. She goes over to the Old House and finds
Mom in Josette's room. Mom is sitting in a rocker staring into
outerspace. Barnabus comes out of the bathroom holding a glass of
water for his mother. Abagail absolutely freaks out! She starts
screaming, " Demon, get away !!.." Barnabus runs after her saying,"
Let me explain, don't run away.." Well, Abagail upset Barnabus and by
the time he caught her his fangs were showing. He bit and killed her-
I don't think he wanted to. Next, we hear a scream. Its Sara, she and
David came over anyway and saw the whole thing. They run out of the
house. Barnabus spends the whole night looking for them. They hide
under some bushes. Its raining very hard.

The next day, Barnabus's dad has a crew of men out looking for
everyone. Willy, finds the kids. They are both very sick and
mumbling, "Barnabus, no.." The men go into the old house and find
Abagail. Dad runs up the stairs and finds Mom. It was really sad. Mom
lost her mind. Dad asks her what happened to Abagail and she doesn't
know what he's talking about. She starts talking about having a special
dinner in honor of Barnabus and Josette. It was so sad the look on
dad's face. He didn't even argue with her, he went along with her as
he was leading her out the door.

This part I'm fuzzy on. For some reason dad goes back to the old house
at night and finds Barnabus. Barnabus tells him everything. Dad is
happy to have him back no matter what the circumstances. He holds out
his arms and Barnabus runs to his dad like a little boy. They embrace,
Dad tells Barnabus the kids are sick and Victoria is going to be hung.
Barnabus says to get Willy and tell him everything.

Next we see Trask and Willy walking up to the Old House. Willy gets
him to go inside for something, then he locks Trask in the House.
Barnabus , in all his vampire glory, grabs Trask. Trask begs for his
life and Barnabus says," After you right the wrong you have committed."
He gives Trask a pen and recites a letter saying Victoria is innocent.
Trask wrights it down and signs it.

This was great! Willy and Barnabus chain Trask to a wall in the
basement and actually build a new wall around him. Barnabus looked
really evil when he put the last brick in the wall.

Willy gives the letter to Peter. Peter is overjoyed. He goes to the
judges house right away and gives it to him. The judge is relieved too
because he thinks Trask is a looney. As soon as Peter leaves, the
judges looks at the letter again and all the ink is gone. Angelique is
in the room and she puts a spell on the judge so that he does not
remember the letter or Peter coming to visit.

Peter goes to see Victoria and tells her they should be letting her out
soon. They talk for a while and Victoria realizes Barnabus is the
vampire. Peter tells her Sara has died and David is near death.
Victoria realizes that David is the last heir to the Collins and if he
dies she will not have a time to go back to. She asks how his fever is
being treated and Peter says they are keeping him warm. Victoria says
    ICE USE ICE!!!

    (Part out of sequence)

The judge opens the door and tells Victoria they are ready to hang
her. Peter and Vicky freak out. Peter says what about the letter....
the judge has no memory of it. Peter actually lunges for the judge but
he is restrained. As they walk Vicky out, Peter makes such a scene,
pushing people out of the way and so forth that someone shoots him. He
dies right in front of Vicky as they are putting the noose over her
    head.

    In the present:

Angelicque takes over Maggie's body. Maggie goes into Phyllis's room
and turns off her respirator. The doc comes in and revives Phyllis at
the exact minute Vicky is hung. The lights go off. When they go back
on- Vicky is in the bed. Everyone is very happy to see her. Vicky is
disoriented buts she knows she back where she belongs. Her eyes catch
Barnabus's and she flinches away to the back of the bed. Barnabus
    gives her "The Look".

    The End.

    Also:

-Peter does use the ice on David and saves his life.
-There was a very touching scene when Barnabus goes to see Sara and
    she dies in his arms.
-Dad can not bring himself to kill Barnabus as Barnabus requests. He
and Willy chain him into his coffin instead.

I hope this is ok. I'm sending off a letter today!!!

23.153Support Dark Shadows - Rally, Phone, and Write...SCAACT::GRASMANNIf it wasn't for the pain, I'd cryMon May 06 1991 01:1468
I sent a support letter to NBC regarding how I feel (and will feel)
should Dark Shadows be canceled. Friday I got a nice packet back. It
seems there is a massive organized effort to keep Dark Shadows around
    in the new incarnation.

    From the packet...

This Wednesday, May 8, from 4-6:00 PM, there will be support rallies in
front of NBC stations in 14 cities. Fans in these areas will
demonstrate their support by carrying signs urging NBC to renew DARK
SHADOWS for a new season of episodes. Rally participants will receive
a free new series DS T-shirt. Signs will be provided for those who
    attend.

There's a lot more to the letter, but I just want to enter the
cities/places for now. If you're a DARK SHADOWS fan, support the
    effort!

If there's not a rally scheduled in your area, you can help keep DS
alive by writing and calling NBC as described here:

Please call NBC headquarters in both Los Angeles (818-840-4444) & New
York (212-664-4444). Also write separate letters to Brandon Tartikoff
and Warren Littlefield at the address below. Please call and write
often (in a calm and professional manner). Your calls and letters have
a much greater impact if the network believes you are acting on your
own and not part of an organized group effort. So don't mention
anything about a festival, rally, or fan club anywhere in your letters.
Also, don't write "Dark Shadows" on your envelopes to NBC. Simply
address your letters to Brandon Tartikoff or Warren Litlefield at NBC.

    Thank you!

A spokesperson said they are going to rally to let NBC know there are
fans out there who want to keep the show going. He said they are
trying to get it changed to Wednesday nights because, "the demographics
would be more conducive for higher ratings." They are expecting 100

Before I get too angry at NBC, I was just wondering where everyone
heard Dark Shadows was cancelled. I scanned all the magazines and
Entertainment shows, but it looks like I missed the announcement.

Although it does not surprise me either. I see Network TV is living
up to its usual low standards by killing a good show. After all,
wasn't NBC the same network that cancelled the original Star Trek,
even though they were flooded with letters to keep it on the air?

I think I'll take the NBC peacock and roast it on my grille!
23.166DNEAST::BURGE_ELAINEAnother cat loverFri May 24 1991 12:026
The announcement was in USA Today and its also mentioned in the TV
notesfile (1622) under Dark Shadows. I wasn't surprised it was
cancelled although I half-heartedly hoped they might make it into a
daytime show again, no such luck. They also cancelled Twin Peaks,
another good show (ABC in this case) and there was a big campaign to
    keep that also.

According to the Late Breaking News section of Soap Opera Digest there
is some hope we might see a return of Dark Shadows something next year.
NBC has ordered for more hours of the show to be shot per Roy Thinnes
who plays Roger Collins and Rev. Trask. He says the cast is very happy
about what looks like a reprieve as they all love the show.
