39.0. "SoapDish, the movie" by SHALOT::HARRIS (The '91 Summer Tour) Mon Jun 03 1991 09:21

Well, I went to see the new movie SOAPDISH on fridya night. And if you
enjoy soap operas you WILL enjoy this movie! It is an excellent parody
of the behind the scenes "life" of a soap opera.

Sally Field was excellent as the aging diva of the show. Kevin Kline,
well, he's got such great facial expressions and the way that he says
things (to appreciate Kevin you have to see "A Fish called Wanda" or
    "I Love you to Death".

Whoppi Goldberg was probably the only "sane" member of the cast. She
was great too. Cathy Moriarty also gave a great performance as Montana,
the "do anything to get ahead" character.

The only thing I didn't like was that Finola Hughes (Anna - General
Hospital) had such a small (really minute) part at the very beginning.
If you want to see her, be on time for the show! Plus, she wasn't even
mentioned in the credits! Leeza Gibbons from Entertainment Tonight did
    really well playing herself.

I'm not going to reveal the plot, except to say that the entire
audience was in hysterics at some of the things that happened. It takes
some of the far-reaching plots of the soap opera to the extreme without
    going over the edge.

So, if you enjoy a good satire, go see this movie!

I can't wait to see it!

They (cast) have been really making the rounds on the talk show
programs and the clips they show are great!

Whoopi and Sally were on Arsenio....they didn't talk much about the
movie, just a bunch of other thing...........but they were great
    together!

Will let you know when I see it!

I saw this on Saturday night and loved it. Everytime Kevin Kline came
on screen I would laugh in anticipation of what he was going to do or
say! He is hysterical. I loved the movie, it was crazy. There are
some very surprising plot twists in it too. They took me by surprise.

I saw it on Sunday night. I thought it started a wee bit slow but
once it got started it was a riot. The entire audience was dying
laughing from about 1/3 of the way through the movie till the end.

Timm (my SO) didn't care much for it. He didn't like the kind of
humor it contained. But then, he won't watch soaps with me either.
Can you believe he thinks Knots Landing is sick. Best he can give
the movie is "it was okay". So...I recommend you don't see it with
someone who can't appreciate the humor behind it.

I believe the previous note was in reference to Robert Downey Jr. being
gay. I think one of the rag sheets, had a story on it. As far as I
know, he has not said this himself. I think he has been living with
an actress for many years. (I can't remember who it is.)

When the cast of Soapdish was on Oprah last week, most of Robert
Downey, Jr.'s conversation revolved around his female SO....I also
forget her name, but every time she was mentioned his whole face lit
    up.

Unfortunately his voice in normal conversation is almost the same a the
one "comics" use when pretending to be "swishy" for laughs. Probably
so idiot decided because he talks like one he must be one. G*d done
you hate stereo-typing????? I just love it when some big strapping
"man's man" comes out of the closet to but these fools in there place!

Then again, to be fair, Rock Hudson was married then went with Marilyn
Maxwell for years before she died. Even if he is, so what, it doesn't
    deminish his abilities.
39.11Robert Downey, Jr.'s GirlfriendPOBOX::NEALWed Jun 05 1991 14:505
Robert Downey, Jr. is dating Sarah Jessica Parker who is on Equal
Justice. I can't believe there are rumors about him being GAY.

I heard that too but then I also remember reading something
about Jessica saying he is DEFINITELY NOT gay.

The tabloids have to have somebody to talk about. Just like
Dolly Parton's silocone breasts are leaking into her bloodstream.
That's this week's headline. I read the STAR but take everything
I read with a grain of sale. You never can tell what to
    	believe!

39.14Studio Made StarMR4DEC::MMARINERThu Jun 06 1991 12:4915
I don't usually move out of AW file but do read this one occasionally.
Used to read it for Dallas (sob).

Remember Rock Hudson was a product of the studio star system and was
pretty much told what to do. His marriage was 'arranged' by someone at
the studio. The girl didn't find out what she was getting in to until
after she was married. The marriage didn't last too long either, just
    months I think.

I'm sure the Marilyn Maxwell thing was just a coverup and both used it
for publicity. He had a lot of women friends who were straight. Liz
Taylor comes to mind. Doris Day. I'm sure he was very much in demand
as an escort and almost everyone out there knew he was gay.

    GOOD GOSH!!

I couldn't get in here yesterday (tooo much to do) I really don't
believe that MY Robert baby is gay !! Like we all say, who cares
anyway? Reality Check here..... I found out this year that one of my
family members is gay and for a looooooong time it was very hard to
accept but I don't love them any less and I'm happy they were able to
trust our love to tell us!

And Lisa, No I didn't get to see the movie yet.( We ended up having a
WONDERFUL long dinner and missed it.) No complaints here though!!

Well, this isn't specifically about the movie but I really couldn't
find any other place to put it.

I was in a Hallmark store today and saw a T-shirt that said:

    			(insert big gold star here)

I'm starring in my own soap opera

Boy can I relate. Fits my life to a tee (pardon the pun) lately.

I just wanted to say I went to High School with one of the actresses in
Soapdish. I'm not sure of the name of her character because I have not
seen it yet. She plays the part of the young Dr. with the dark hair
that's sometimes piled on top of her head. Anyway, her name is Teri
Hatcher and she is in that new show called "Sunday Dinner". I
personally think she is a terrible actress (she's been in tons of
things), but she gets a lot of these parts for her looks.

Soaps stars dish about "Soapdish"
By Michael Logan

What do the real stars of daytime thinig of "Soapdish"? After all, Paramount's
big-screen suds spoof features -- among other characters -- a back-stabbing,
foul-mouthed diva (Cathy Moriaty), a no-tallent, brainless hunk (Paul
Johansson) and a hair sprayed neurosurgeon with a 40-inch chest (Teri Hatcher).

"I'm still laughing" says Dan McVicar (Clarke) if CBS's The Bold and the
Beautiful. "But, to be fair, I only recognized a few people from our show."
According to Jeanne Cooper (Kay) of CBS's The Young and the Restless, "Most
people think soaps are a farce, so why not make a movie abou tit? I wasn't
offended. Puhleeze, after 18 years in daytime TV, I've heard it all." But
Nancy Grahn (Julia) of NBC's Santa Barbara admits, "I had a good tie, but I did
take it a little personally -- especially the prison scene where Sally Field's
character cries, "Yes! Yes! Yes! I am guilty -- guilty of love in the first
degree!" Sure, we've all been handed those kind of lines, but we make an
effort to deliver the realistically -- and it sure beats acting in prime time
opposite a taking car."

The fate of the leading man Kevin Kline -- who gets axed from his soap and ends
up playing "Death of a Salesman" before an audience of geriatrics at a Florida
dinner theatre -- struck quite a cord. "It;s the actor's worst nightmare,"
laughs Lynn Herring (Lucy) of ABC's General Hospital. "We're all afraid we'll
wind up there." Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie) of NBC's Days of Our Lives claims
she's already been there. "I played the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre in
Sarasota, where the actors posted a backstage sign that said, "It doesn't
matter. They're only here for the roast beef." Hayes wickedly adds, "I'm
dying to know what Susan Lucci thinks of the movie!" In the opening scene,
Field's character shows up at the Emmys gowned and coifed amazingly like the
Emmy-less queen of All My Children -- and walks off with her eighth consecutive
trophy. Later, she's so needy for recognition she dashes off the a Paramus,
NJ, shopping mail -- a scene GH's Kin Shriner (Scott) considers rather
realistic. "We all know soap actors," he says, "who will go to the opening of
an envelope."

Well I finally went and saw the movie last night!!

I loved it!! My friend (man) was laughing so hard at some parts I was
almost a little embarrased. I think Sally Field did a wonderful job!!
She is just too cute for words. Some of the twists were great!!

All you guys and this file came to mind alot throughout the movie.... I
reccommend that you at least rent the vid if you haven't seen it yet!!
